A Simple Question...

Patrons of the DoS Community,

I have done much thinking as of late, and have asked myself many questions... gaining answers for some, and not for others... and even raising more questions. But now, I bring to you all a simple question... but I think one not having a simple answer.

What do the Baronies, and the Baronial Rings, mean to you?

Are the Rings mere trinkets to symbolize rank, or are they something more?

I feel the Baronial Rings are the physical embodiment of the acceptance of a responsibility toward the Community at large, for their well-being, and education. They are not mere trinkets, but symbolize much more... a conscious effort toward the betterment of DoS at large... one which binds those Barons, as a unit, together, in a common goal. Warlords may come, and they may go... and Baronies may change hands, but the responsibility remains the
same. By challenging, and by accepting the rank, title, and position, they have willingly acknowledged the duties that accompany it, and accept those duties, at a level those of the Warlord rank are not required. This is what *I* believe.

And now, I ask you, the patrons, your thoughts.

Respectfully,
Jaycynda Ashleana

Jaycy,

I gave my thoughts on the rings once before, but..

The Baronial rings are a symbol of the history and tradition of the Duel of Swords. They do not embody a political view in themselves, that is the doing of those the have held them. The rings are a symbol of honor and hard work.

They mean more to me, but that is the jist.

::stops and reads the clearly penned missive. A smile crosses his lips and the moisture forming in his eyes reflect more light upon the small wrinkles about them. He thinks, "Aye Baroness, your words speak to my heartfelt thoughts and give me reason to have faith. But how will everyone answer?" The smile softens a bit as he turns to walk through the halls::

Holding the ring symbolizes an acceptance to a certain responsibility. As a baron, you have a higher obligation to set an example among those duelists.

Granted, all duelers should set an example, but as a baron, I feel it is a higher responsibility. It also means that, as a baron, it is a duty to hold it with honor.

It means absolutely nothing but one more fancy. Anyone who affiliates a baron with honor, respect or dignity is a fool.

>It means absolutely nothing but one more fancy.

In the simplest terms as put down in the rules, I would almost agree. But there are many things that follow from the rules.

First of all, a Barony recognizes a dueler's skill, and by extension, accomplishment. A Baron (except in a very rare circumstances that should never be repeated, if I had my way) must have either placed high in a tournament of his peers, or have defeated such an individual, or so on.

A Baron, by accepting the ring, should set some sort of example for the arena. New duelers are probably mystified by the titled ranks, and all will hold as role-models those that hold them. A Baron needs not neccesarily do this, but I would certainly expect it.

I expect a Baron to be cognizant of the history surrounding his ring, but it is not something that should be dwelled on. What is more important is what the Baron can do now that will further the history of the rings.

Lastly, and this is political, the Baronies as a whole provide a hierarchical structure to the sport. They enable a number of duelers that have stood out from the community to be recognized, as well as provide the Overlord with a bit of information about how a dueler feels about him. For instance, Kalamere was Renegade until Dal made the policy change, and is Loyal now. Certainly the policy involved Baronies anyways, but this is an example of a
change that a certain person can help make come about once they have been raised to the esteemed title of Baron.

I really can't fully sum up shortly what the Baronies about. The best I could do is that they offer a way for a skilled dueler to be recognize for the rest of the history of the DoS. In return, the baron is expected to act as a role-model.

The Baronies,

Seem to me, a step up they are from Warlord, and eyes of many will watch you up close or from afar, which of which is never known. To hold one I know not, believe do I that how one holds it refelcts they're personallity... which means only that you precieve one differantly than I.

Nothing More.
