Brian,

Forgive me, if I misinterprete here, but was it not your contention in the above statement that the officials of this sport aren't responsible for upholding the results of honor duels?

::raises a slim brow at that statement wondering if no officials were there why was Reiver named as calling the duel::

Master Girvin,

Thou seemeth to leap to the defense of the Warlord Huma Dragonbane ast ist thine priviledge, certes. I wouldst certes hope tis in support of the man and nae simply that thou are spouting rhetoric, rules and contracts. For if that ist thine reasoning, then Huma didst, before witnesses in the dueling house didst enter into contract with M'lord Jeffrey Oakenshield, after which, by his own hand upon this ancient corkboard he didst declare he would
honor that 'ontract then didst again upon this verra same corkboard renege.

Thou hast thineself shown, in my humble opinion, a caustic pen with regard to the current Overlord more than once upon this ancient corkboard.

Hast it e'er occured to thee that thine wife's decisions past and present may have been in error? Thine lady wife had verra little experience when she wast named coordinator of this sport, and, I do humbly point out, she wast nae appointed by the community. She very rarely e'en appears in the hall. Understandably she has much paperwork and certes folk come to her with requests, comments and such. Though thou may be her husband, and certes tis
understandable thou wouldst leap to her defense, thou must also acknowledge the very real fact that she nor thee for that matter were e'en rare visitors to these hallowed halls when the Baron's were first named nor present when traditions grew in within these walls. I humbly point out, Master Girvin that thou wast nae present that momentous eve. I humbly point out that thine ladywife dinna deign to make her comments nor her decision known to those
present but didst indeed depart leaving Master Nycholas to announce the decision.

By thine reasoning, Sir, the instance when Kaprielle's challenger, Magnus, failed to appear should in retrospect be declared forfeit thereby removing Kaprielle's right to reschedule her match. Ast the Baron Oakenshield pointed out, thine lady wife made there a unilateral decison preventing Kaprielle and the Baron from crossing blade, Mistress Kappi electing to reschedule the match.

To indicate that thine ladywife means more to this sport than those whose feats of skill, whose blades have marked the tradition in these hallowed rings, I find devoid of reasoning. The Duel of Swords is indeed larger than any one person, Sir, and that includes thine Ladywife. Ast to thine wife's tenure ast coordinator, though her longevity is laudable, thou must note there ist nae mechanism for the community to censure, chastise nor seek her
removal or for that matter the removal of any of the officials.

Thou spoutest rhetoric Master Girvin, for though Lady Helix ist indeed thine wife, she is not the "mother" of thine children. lest I am behind in my social calendar and my scribes have not informed me of a recent addition to the Clan Girvin, she is "stepmother" to thine children.

Thine lands, clan and family are not under attack, Master Girvin, thine wife's decision is being questioned and comments made upon it. Wouldst come now and make threats to silence those that do so? Come thou now to make threats against the Baron? Wouldst settle that in a duel of Honor? Wouldst expect if such were to take place to honor the terms of that duel? Thou thought little of making threats and casting insult upon me when I wast carrying
my last bairn, I grant thee courage this time in making threats against one who could cleave thee in twain should he so choose.

The rules do not EMBODY the duel of Swords, Master Girvin. Those who live and breath and wield blade in the dance, whose blood stains the sands of the rings, whose banners rest upon the walls, whose tales of heroric actions and base dishonor shall be told unto generations EMBODY the Duel of Swords. Gondar to Dalamar, The Original Nine to the current Thirteen Barons, and each who has nae only set foot within the rings but those who find their way
down those ancient stairs, who hear the clash of weapons, who shout encouragement to friends, who boo and hiss those they oppose, who draw blade to defend their honor, it is these, Commoner to Overlord who EMBODY the Duel of Swords.

I for one, shall pray there is no Silence in the Basement. Thou statest that thine Lady Wife weighs all options, yet verily I say unto thee, the community is entitled to weigh thine Lady Wife upon the same scale. The double standard thou decriest applies to thine Lady ast well, Master Girvin, for her decisions are for the most part kept from the community at large. Let her speak for herself, Master Girvin, I for one am aware she hast a voice.

Ya don't scare me Brian, ya never will, only time I ever see ya is when yer callin', and yer too honorable ta carry out prejudice dere. -Jeff

Visit the arena a bit more Often, Jeff, I have left the ranks of the staff well onto six months now.

Ta be blunt Brian, just because someone can do something, do nae mean he should. It be in ta Huma's hands at that moment, and ta Huma did choose ta try ta finagle ta crown with evoking ta rules. Of course he can do it Brian, it be right there in ta rules...but then we get to ta finer point; why should he? -Summer

Ah yes, but has not Dalamar not justified the test of worthiness countless times as it being his RIGHT to use it as he so chooses? Yes it has. So now that someone has used the same reasonsing, he is dishonoable and disgusting? What does that make Dalamar?

What continues to distrub me is this great double standard. It is clear in this whole debate and I doubt that the Baron's council will follow it's own past guidelines.

Forgive me, if I misinterprete here, but was it not your contention in the above statement that the officials of this sport aren't responsible for upholding the results of honor duels? -Collie

That is absolutely correct Colleen. If one studies their history, honor duels (usually to the death) are illegal in most cultures, hence they occur OUTSIDE the asupices of offical bodies and are not considered by them.

As a final note Jeff, should Magnus have not arrived last night to defend his ring would you have voted to allow his second to duel in his complete absence *or* have given the ring outright to Jesse? Hmm? If you agree to a time and place to be and do not show up I fail to see how it honors your commitment to your title. It is your title and your duty to show. Otherwise, Baron Oakenshield, you need to have not stripped Clutch of his peer wins, as
I am sure you voted to do. The only difference in this case is Clutch was not the overlord, yet I believe we are seeing a totally different outcome are we not? Amazing how power and prestige asuages those whose minds are easily swayed.

I remind you all that justice is blind and has *no* loyalties.

Constant,

~Brian Girvin
