I have a fairly accurate personal knowledge of the events to which you are referring. The delicacies of gentlemen must, peforce, cause me to refrain from being too explicit in the details.
However, I will say that malicious gossip was spread without either self control or responsibility. Great wrongs were hinted at, but never spoken outright. Innuendo was bandied about in place of fact. The "respect" and "honour" in which all held she who was at the back oft hese rumours caused many to believe that her innuendos were the same as anyone else's truth.
It is a sad thing when people use their own reputation to support the malicious destruction of the reputation of another. It is even sadder when people continue to hold the culprit in high regard after the fact.
