The Giant's Gloves
From: kirahknot@aol.com (Kira Hknot)
Date: 22 Dec 1998 21:32:17 EST
Kira skipped away from the mess of papers, that had fallen when she retrieved the spoon from the cork board. Giggling merrily as she headed up in to the Inn, she began her search for Tormay.
Kira wandered about the Inn, many times forgetting what it was that she was looking for. At one point, she found herself in a large kitchen. The room was filled with lots of pots and pans and plenty of food. Kira spied a chunk of bread on a table and her tiny tummy grumbled. She tucked one glove under her arm and placed the spoon down on the table, while she scooped up the bread. A shout, startled the wee kender. Within moments, a
very large man was headed for her. She held the gloves tightly and ran off, bread in hand but the spoon completely forgotten.
Being so small, Kira was able to dodge the big man's grasp. Eventually, finding a way out of the Inn, Kira headed off through RhyDin in search of Tormay.

Kira wandered through the streets of RhyDin Proper, and after hours of searching, she still had not found Tormay. The sky began to grow dark and the wee kender was growing weary. She found a cluttered alley that contained a number of Kender sized boxes, where she snuggled herself up, resting her head upon the large gloves.
By the time the sun rose the next morning, Kira and the gloves were long gone. Her search continued, leading her to the waterfront. Tormay often talked of going fishing with Baron AJ, so Kira hoped to find him near the water. Instead of finding Tormay, she found crowds of brutish looking men hauling boxes and crates.
The search was beginning to get boring. Kira had started to give up hope of finding her friend. She knew that if she went back to the dueling house, Tormay would eventually show up. So, she headed back to there. As she passed a large park, she heard something that sounded like her friend's laughter. Kira stopped and just listened for a while, but the noise was gone. She began to walk away and again the laughter sounded. Now she
knew beyond any doubt that it was Tormay she heard. As quickly as her tiny legs would carry her, she ran about the park looking behind trees and benches.
As Kira ran about one bench, she nearly ran straight into a lady reading a book. Kira scurried back around the backside of the bench, before she could be seen. On light feet, she crept about the other side of the bench, the sound of Tormay's giggles being much louder now.
At last, Kira spotted her friend, but his back was to her. Not wanting to attract the attention of the lady on the bench, Kira tossed a small rock at Tormay.
Tormay cried out as the rock tagged him, and Kira ducked back behind the bench while the lady tended to him.

Tormay glanced upward, then turned his head left, then right and then left again. Seeing nobody baffled him. He looked at Molleen with small suspicious eyes but quickly dismissed thoughts as he could see that she was deeply engrossed in her book. He crouched down to scoop up a snowball. While packing it in tight and scanning to find some kind of
target,....anything would do.....a cardboard box, perhaps, he looked past Molleen's legs. His eyes caught movement, though it was slight.
"A....HA! So you are the Coolprit!" he shouted, causing Molleen to jump up, but she surmised that he was into his imaginary childplay and went back to her book.
Tormay fluttered up into the air, dropping down fairydust as he went and looked down. He identified the knot tied on the top of the kender's head and he giggled.
The snowball in his hand plummeted it's way down and smashed the top of that knot dead straight on.
"Good Shot!"
He clapped for himself.

Kira's eyes shifted back and forth between Tormay and the woman on the bench. Cautiously, she kept herself tucked behind the bench, out of the woman's line of sight. A small gasp escaped her lips, when Tormay screamed. Smooshing herself as close to the back on the bench as she could...attempting to remain unnoticed...she missed the sight of Tormay
lifting off the ground. A cold, wet sensation drippled down her neck and face as the after effects of the snowball melted. Cringin and shivering, Kira gave a cold-eyed glare up to Tormay.
When Tormay ceased his clapping, she waved him down to join her behind the bench. Without words, she showed the fairy boy, her newest treasures.

She showed him an angel's feather, and a small knife.
"Got a worm?" he asked.
She showed off a couple of more items and his eyes opened wide upon sight of the really big gloves.
"I want play with those!" he squealed.
"Okay, " she answered and handed him over a glove.
He plopped his wee bum down on the snow and situated the glove between his legs. He scooped up some snow in his hands, packing another snowball and dropped it into the glove.
"Help me, Kira! This is a guess-game. How many balls do you tink...I mean think...we could...."
"Let's find out, " she said with a giggle.
They got to the last packed snowball and with satisfaction both giggled at each other and cried out, "SEVEN" at the same time. Then Kira watched as Tormay closed his eyes.
He snapped them open just to sayd, "Watch the snowballs. I practice magic!"
"Ohhhhh! I like magic!"
The topknot bounced merrily behind her head. In a few moments, she witnessed the snowballs metamorph into steel balls.
"oooooooohhhhhhhh!" She responded with more giggles.
His little face got really serious then and a question formed upon it.
"Ever skate on ice?" he asked.
"Skate? What's skate?"
He stood up. "Come on. I show you!" he said.
The glove was heavier now, but he dragged it along behind him. She followed him to a pond.

Kira was thrilled at Tormay's reaction to the gloves. She had known all along that he would love them.
After filling one of them with snowballs, Kira was amazed at Tormay's magic. He had turned the snow into metal. Then he suggested going skating. Kira knew what snow and ice were, but she had no understanding of the word skating. Kender, however, are a very curious race of beings. With a bounce in her step, she followed the fairy to the pond. She was excited to see that the water was frozen. Quickly, her little feet scurried out onto
it...slipping and sliding all about. She laughed merrily as she landed on her butt.
A glance back to where they had come, showed that Tormay was still plodding along with the heavy glove dragging behind him.
Every attempt by the wee kender to regain her feet, lead to yet more falls onto the ice. Laughing to the point of tears, Kira called for Tormay to join her on the ice.

Finally Tormay reached the perimeter around the pond and dropped the glove with a sigh.
"That sure is heavby, " he said.
Kira invited him to come join her on the ice. He decided that his like for her was enough to make him ask her to be a girlfriend, but what could he do to impress her? She was so...o....o..much fun. Watching her slip and slide and fall caused bustles of laughter. But he wanted to impress her more before he asked her to be his girlfriend so his mind shifted through ideas.
"Kira, do you know what hockey is?"
From her prone position on the ice, her head bopped up and in all seriousness she thought about that and answered, "no." With a sudden giggle, she asked, "What else can you do with your magic?"
"Watch this!" he said, thinking this just might do to impress her. His eyes shut tight and within only a few seconds, the glove floated upward. She was dazzled by this.
Fairy dust then lifted up and swirled around the glove and soon after it disappeared.
"We got play invisible hockey now Kira! This will be fun!!!"
"Where'd it go?" She asked.
"It's there, Kira! Okay...want play Hockey? I'll bring it down to the ice and splain the game. You will like this game, I think."
"Okay. Will I be able to see it when it's on the ice?"
She was still laying prone.
Tormay grinned his dimpled cheek. "When it gets down to the ice, I will make it appear again! Okay ...Wheeeeeee....here I go!"
Topaz eyes disappeared behind the lids as he closed them once again for concentration.
A thumped squish and crackling noise echoed about them as the metal filled glove crashed through the ice.
Tormay stepped onto the ice and obviously trained in moving upon it, he skidded and stopped before Kira. They both glanced down to the newly formed hole in front of them.

The invisible glove crashed through the ice, causing a splash of very cold water to hit Kira's face. Within moments, Tormay was by her side, looking down into the darkness of the water.
A sideward glance to him, she asked, "Was that supposed to happen?"
"Ut oh, no hockey, now."
The wind carried the voice of a woman, calling for Tormay. The two little beings, looked at each other and shrugged.
Tormay headed off in the direction of the voice. Kira attempted to follow him, but was still unable to stop sliding about.
A loud ripping noise, caught Tormay's attention. As he looked back toward Kira, he could see the ice had cracked all about her.

Tormay had reached the top of a small hill when he heard the splash and turned around. He was just in time to see Kira herself splash down into the water.
"I really wish I could play with you, Kira, but I think I have to go home now."
He turned about and descended down the hill.
Molleen smiled. "Time to go home, Tormay."
"I know, " he said, a small tad of dismay creeping through.
He slipped his little hand into hers and they proceeded to walk in a direction away from the park and the pond.
"So whatcha been doing, little guy?"
"Oh...I was playing with Kira on the ice!" A sparkled booted up in his eyes. "The glove fell through the ice and make a big hole. This big!" He spread his arms open, perhaps exaggerating a bit, but Molleen did not know this.
"Kira? Who is Kira? Where is she now?"
"Oh,...Kira is my friend." he answered and non-chalantly, "She fell down in a hole too and I think she is swimming. I really wish I could play with her."
"WHAT? She..oh..by the goddess!!!"
Molleen halted and turned about face.
"Whoooooo...you gonna let me play with her! Yay!" he released his hand from Molleen's and clapped several times but she snatched one of them and in a huffed manner rushed toward the pond.
"Do you realize, TORMAY, how deep that pond is?"
By this time, he knew she was angry but was in deep confusion as to what. He did not understand.
On the top of the hill, she saw the hole that he was talking about but where was this Kira?

The ice cracked even more, dragging Kira down into the icy cold water with a splash. She vaguely heard Tormay say something about going home, as her ears filled with the deep chill from the water.
The lack of oxygen under the water didn't seem to bother Kira. She was actually enjoying the experience of being unable to breath. After all, it was something new.
Through the mirk, she could see a bit of light, indicating which way was up. She moved her little arms and legs about, trying to propel her way toward the light. But having no knowledge of how to swim, she wasnt getting very far.
Her lungs beginning to ach from the lack of air, she suspected that death would be imminent if she did not get out of the water soon. With quicker motions, she flailed her arms about, only she seemed to be moving deeper into the water.
A light magical tingle became noticable against her leg. Her pockets being full with numberous little trinkets, that she seldom gave any thought to. The tingling feeling spread throughout her body and her lungs stopped aching.
The wee kender thought it strange that in death she would still be in the cold water.

Tormay let out a gasp.
"Aw....she gone away." He turned his small head up toward Molleen who seemed to be mesmerized by the cracked ice even from afar.
"Molleen?" Tormay asked, "I could show you how to ice skate on the ice if you want."
Molleen looked down at him and said nothing more than, "Follow me."
She walked toward the edge of the pond.
"THAT's where she was swimming!" cried out Tormay. He pointed toward the hole. "She probly got bored without me and left, I think. I think she likes me too."
Molleen stared at the hole and suddenly an alarming look took over her face.
"Bubbles!" she exlclaimed.
"NO, no...her name is Kira, not Bubbles, " said Tormay.
"Tormay, your friend Kira is still in that water. We've got to do something fast!"
"I get her!" he shouted and Molleen could not grab his hand fast enough. Tormay fluttered up and ignored her pleas to come back down.
"I get her, Molleen, but I have to make me the water warm first cuz it sure do look freezing cold."
He shut his little eyes tight.
Finally it dawned on Molleen that Tormay had learned something useful when he went to fairy school training. She remembered how they had taught them to use their wings over a pool of water and how to deal with depth.
She shivered. Tormay's short attention span didn't help to keep her warm. She stayed quiet to allow him the concentration he needed.
"Wicked Kewl!" he shouted, signaling the completion of his deed. Tormay was getting faster with his magick every day.
Molleen could see the warmth rising up from the water. Tormay's little body then turned upside down in the air and he laughed.
"This is my favorite! Wheeeee!" he shouted and dove into the deep waters.

Kira was still moving about in the water, very confused by her ability to breath. How can I be breathing in the water? Don't dead beings stop breathing? Kira continued to feel the strange tingling throughout her body, but she could no long tell where the feeling began or where it ended.
The water began to warm up and Kira believed that it was just her body adapting to the cold. She flailed her little arms and kicked her feet, but still she could not manage to reach the top of the water.
There was a sudden splash into the water, that caused Kira's wee body to move deeper down. She flailed more but it didn't seem to stop her decent.

There was a sudden splash into the water, that caused Kira's wee body to move deeper down. She flailed more but it didn't seem to stop her decent.

After Tormay took his plunge into the water, he opened his eyes to pure darkness. Tormay did not like darkness. It reminded him of the bad dreams he use to have. His thoughts were focused now on a remedy. He would produce a nightlight just as Mummy did when he had had those bad dreams.
This should be easy enough. One of the first skills he had learned to handle during classes in flying school was that of shedding off light from his wings while under water. In fact, because of his fear of darkness, he had mastered this talent quickly while other students had struggled.
So all the fairy had to do was think, light, and it would happen.
But it didn't happen!
Fortunately enough, he bumped into Kira. Her hand grabbed ahold of his. Unbeknown to them they were at the depth of a good fifty feet.
Tormay moved all his free appendages, his free arm and legs, so that the two of them moved upward. And he moved even faster, when he couldn't breath where normally he could. The warmth that he had magicked up around his body started to cool. This was unusal.
Something was wrong.
