His Journey

Cletus had slept during the whole flight, and before he knew it, he had reached Polaris. Once he landed, he and Terra made the short journey to the capital city of the country. There, the Emperor was expecting him and threw a small banquet to celebrate. Cletus and the Emperor conversed about many things during the dinner. Cletus also saw many of his old friends and many people he fought beside to win the thrown back for their current Emperor.
One of which was his childhood friend, Damien Mortus. Damien had trained with Cletus and Magnus for many years, and then when their first master died, he continued his training with Magnus. He was the first to offer his blade in support for them, when they were told they were destined to lead a revolution and retake the crown of Polaris, and stood right beside them throughout the war. He was their biggest asset during that grueling campaign.

Once dinner was finished, Cletus asked to speak with the Emperor and Damien in private. After being led to the emperor's private chamber, Cletus proceded to tell them both of the problem facing him. He asked the Emperor for soldiers to support his friends, and that Damien be with them and lead them into battle, alongside Magnus. The Emperor obliged, and offered Cletus: 25 Crimson Guard (the highest ranking and skilled in the army), 75 Rangers
(middle class soldiers), and 200 regular soldiers and put them under the command of Damien (one of the highest ranking Generals in the army). The Emperor then gave orders that the army be assembled that next day, and to set out two days hence.

After the meeting, Cletus retired to his room, to get some much needed rest. As he was climbing into bed, he noticed a note on the side table. He picked it up and read it.

Cletus,
I know the real reason you are here. Come and see me tommorow and we can talk about what is happening.

The WiseMan

Cletus leaned back on his bed and smiled. Nobody remembered the WiseMan's real name anymore. It was one of those things that just got lost over the years. Cletus then drifted off to sleep, with memories filling his head.

That afternoon Cletus paid a visit to the author of the note on his bedside table. The WiseMan's cottage was a two-hour hike, straight up Dawn mountain, (named because from the castle, then sun appears to rise from the mountain) from where Cletus was staying.

The WiseMan lived in a small, two room, wood cabin, on a precipice overlooking the castle, however, it was not visible from the castle, do to the dense foliage surrounding it. Inside the cottage was a bedroom, with none other than a bed in it, and a living area with two chairs, a desk, and a lot of books.

When the sun was at its peak, Cletus knocked on the door. Minutes later Cletus was inside, with a cup of tea ((you heard right...Cletus drinking tea...)), sitting across from the WiseMan. After Cletus told him how Magnus was doing, and after the WiseMan gave Terra a cookie, they began to talk about what Cletus ventured all this way to find out.

The WiseMan began by telling Cletus about his family: Who his parents were, who his ancestors were, and what role they played in the past.

Cletus learned a lot that afternoon. He learned that he was a decendant of one of the first people to settle Polaris, the son of a great warrior, and that he decended from a long line of mages.

Over dinner, the WiseMan attempted to explain what was happening to Cletus.

The two sat down to a dinner of mutton and corn (an interesting dish, but it tastes good). During dinner, the WiseMan explained to Cletus what was happening to him.

"Cletus, to put it simply, yer changin'. Ye were the first born o' yer mother. In yer bloodline, the first born is the one to inherit the powers. But ye dunnae jus' come opon 'em. They mus' develop inside o' ye first an' that takes time. It also takes many trip t' the Astral Plane.."

"Th' Astral Plane is where ye went t' that day ye disapeared. Until yer powers fully develop, ye will nae remember a thin' that goes on t'ere. When ye get older, I will tell ye more about this strange place. Until then, ye can coun' on three more visits t'ere. Each time, ye'll be returned back to the same spot ye occupied 'fore, Ye will aslo experience the use o' many powers, simply by thinkin' o' 'em. And the last thin' ye will encounter, will
be ye passin' out two times. This gives yer body the rest it needs to develop. After these thin's are finished, and yer body has developed fully on its own, I will come and find ye to further yer trainin'."

Cletus then pulled out the medallion. "What about this?" He asked.

"Ah...tha'. Tha' is the Amulet o' the Obsidian. Tha' Amulet 'as been passed down through yer bloodline fer many generations. When the time fer the next generation to begin the maturin' process, the Amulet will find its new owner. So, after ye eldest son or daughter is of age to begin, the Amulet will find 'im or 'er."

"There is nothing more I can tell ye until 'his process has completed, but once it 'as, expect me to be lookin' fer ye. I will aslo then tell ye about yer mothers final days o' life."

With that, Cletus left for the castle, and reached it before the new day began.

Cletus returned that night to an even bigger feast than that of the night he arrived. He had completly forgot that it was the eve of the new year. The whole castle was filled with the sounds of men and women eating, drinking, and dancing. The feast lasted well into the night, and at the turn of the year, the whole assembly was treated to the finest wines from the deepest cellar in the castle.

The next day, as Cletus was preparing his things to return home, there was a knock on his door. Cletus opened the door, and to his surprise, found the Emperor standing there. His face was grim, and his eyes seemed cold, completely opposite from the previous night.

"What's wrong." Cletus quickly blurted out.

The Emperor spoke in a very soft voice, "A band of Orcs came down from the north mountains last night. They hit a couple of farms on the outskirts of Acuve."

Immediatly, Cletus knew what the Emperor was going to say and said in a harsh voice, "What about..."

The Emperor cut him off with a swift, but soft nod. Cletus paused for a moment, taking in fully what he had just been told. He then asked, "Are they dead?"

Once again the Emperor nodded. Cletus sat down on the edge of his bed, a million thoughts raging through his mind. The two people who took him in when he was in need, the two who raised him as one of their own, the two who acted as his parents for over 10 years....were dead. Cletus sat there for a long moment, then he stood up, his eyes turning a deep red (another side effect from the process he was going through) and turned to the Emperor.
The Emperor nodded, knowing what he was going to say.

With that, Cletus ran out of the room and down to the stables, where the fastest horse that could be found was awaiting him, all ready to go. Cletus rode as fast as the horse could towards Acuve, with Terra behind them, trying to keep pace.

He reached the town before sundown that day. Once there, he wasted no time in gathering together what he needed: a shovel, two large blankets, a chisel, and a compass.

Cletus then hurried towards the farm. Once there, he found the bodies of his foster parents. They were mutilated, and he couldn't tell who was who. After wrapping each of their remains in a seperate blanket, he the corpses to a spot deep in the woods.

This spot already had one tombstone in it. It was the spot Cletus had buried someone he held close to him, before she was killed by orcs (but that's a story for another day). While Cletus was digging the two holes for the two new additions to his small graveyard, all he could think about was the memories he had shared with them.

After placing the bodies in the graves and covering them up with dirt, he searched for two large stones and proceeded to chisel away at them. He carved their names, and when they died opon it. Then he placed them at the head of the grave. Moments later, there were two flowers placed by the stones, and Cletus was gone.

He returned back to the small home the two occupied. There, he waited until a little after midnight. Cletus draped himself with black, and in the night could not be seen, except for the red glow of his eyes. He also covered Terra in a black cloak.

The two then set off. Terra leading the way, following the scent of the orcs. A little over a half hour before dawn, the two came opon the orc encampment. A quick glance revealed to Cletus eight sleeping orcs, and one half-asleep sentry. Without making a sound, Cletus crept behind the sentry, and, with the knife he kept in his boot, slit the throat of the orc.

Cletus unsheathed Hralfgar, and turning to the sleeping orcs, two ideas ran through his head: Kill them while they sleep, or wake them up and fight like a man? He turned to Terra and their eyes met. Knowing what she wanted, he nodded and moved towards one of the orcs. He held Hralfgar over his head and drove it into the orc.

The howl the orc let out as the blade burrowed its way into his leg was one was one no sane man could repeat. The other orcs quickly awoke to see what had happened, but just as the one closest to his wounded comrade grunted, Hralfgar was driven through his chest. The rest of them were quick to arms. Cletus jumped back to survey the situation.

One dead orc, one wounded , six up, armed with axes against himself and Terra. He smiled and muttered, "The odds are in my favor." As quick as it took him to utter those words, was as quick as the next one dropped. Hralfgar flashed high at an incoming orc and slit his neck. Cletus then moved closer to the other five, distracting them so Terra could set up behind. Then, as three rushed towards Cletus, Terra pounced on the back of the
other, knocking him to the ground, and, as luck would have it, onto a sharp rock coming out of the ground. The rock drove its way into the orcs head and killed him immediatly.

The other one who remained behind, swung his axe at Terra. She dropped to the ground and rolled over, avioding its deadly touch. She was quick to rise, and jumped at the orc. One of her sharp claws finding its way into the orcs eye. He howled out and dropped to the ground, where she proceeded to rip his neck out.

One of the orcs who rushed Cletus, dropped back to attend to his comrade who had Hralfgar driven through his leg. The other two went at Cletus all out. Cletus ducked under the first flying axe, and kicked out the knee of the wielder, he then swung Hralfgar, cutting off the ear of the other. Cletus was quick to strike the one on the ground, and drove Hralfgar through his neck.

The one with the missing ear was next to fall. While he was still grabbing his ear, wondering what happened, Cletus jumped at him and swung Hralfgar. The rest of the orc's head met with the same fate as his ear, and they were soon both lying next to each other on the ground.

Then, from out of nowhere it seemed, the last standing orc had struck. His axe burrowed its way into Cletus' left arm. Cletus returned the blow with a swift strike to the orc's stomach, but the force of the blow knocked Cletus to the ground. The orc was hurt, but not hurt enough as he remained on his feet and stood over Cletus. He raised the axe over his head and then grunted.

The orc moved as if to bring the axe down, but then suddenly stopped. His eyes were wide open as if stunned by something. He then fell down to the side, with a small axe sticking out of the back of his head. Cletus turned his head and was met by Terra sitting there, panting. It seemed somehow she had picked one of the orc's hatchets up with her mouth and flung it at the orc standing over Cletus.

Cletus winced as he realized just how badly his arm was hurt. Slowly he stood up, blood gushing from the wound, and his arm hanging limply at his side. Disregarding his own injury, he walked over to the one orc who was still living. Cletus looked down and for a moment pitied the poor creature, but then drove Hralfgar right between its eyes.

Cletus flipped the dead body over and examined its lower back. He nodded and said, "Just as I thought, the same tribe who killed Azure."

He then turned his back on the orcs and returned to the village.

Cletus recieved swift medical attention when he returned to the town. His arm was stitched up, bandaged up heavily, then put into a sling. It would take a long time for this wound to heal. Cletus just hoped it wouldn't impead any of his normal functions.

Cletus then re-mounted his horse, and with Terra close behind, returned to the castle.

When they returned to the castle, they quickly returned to the Emperor, and Cletus told him what had happened. He then took his leave of the Emperor and of Polaris for a while. After returning to his room, he packed up the rest of his things, then set out for where he left the Gryphon. The two boarded the animal and set off for Rhydin. They were on time to arrive in Rhydin early the next morning.
