Missing Time.

On her way to her shift Friday night, she seemed to get stung by a bee on her neck. At least, that was her first thought...and her last until she woke up in an alley. By the look of the sun, which was the first thing that glared into her opening eyes, it was afternoon. But it had been night...

She looked at her watch when her eyes cleared, and frowned. It was afternoon. Of the next day, Saturday. Her hand instinctively flew to her neck where she'd felt the "bee sting" and found nothing. She knew already that it was no bee, but some kind of injection or dart that contained something to knock her out.

She looked around slowly, making sure her immediate area was relatively safe. Fairly sure it was, she then proceedeed with a head to toe inspection. Nothing was missing, and there were only two things that gave her pause.

Her throat was sore.
Another envelope was in her jacket, with more pictures.

She perused the pictures, photos of her and Wil in the Fici Manor, and at their hotel suite.

She'd never received any contact after the last envelope of pictures. No blackmail note, nothing. And now these...still no note. And nothing in her was compromising, yet they were still highly unnerving. It meant that someone had gone to a lot of trouble in surveillance, for one thing. For another, it meant that someone had a great deal of patience to have been watching her for at least 8 years. And then too, this someone knew how to avoid being
disabled by her magic, not approaching her directly while she was concious.

She'd have to study the pictures. She also decided to go to the doctors to see what can be found out about her throat. She could imagine a few things that would cause it, none of them pleasant.

And of course, one thing that bothered her quite a bit right now. Where had she been for the last 18 hours?

Jola still hadn't found Wil. She went first to the Arena, to find no one there. Then she went to their Hotel Suite, he wasn't there either. She left a message with the concierge, and a note in their suite. Under the circumstances, the notes were deceptively simple. "Miss you, Jola."

She had no way to contact the Star Wolf, unfortunately. She decided against a full fledged search, because she knew Wil would keep checking back at the suite and at the Arena if he was searching for her, and she didn't want to give those watching her yet another bit of information.

She also decided against double checking the suite for surveillance equipment, and simply assumed it was there. She added a few more weapons to her arsenal that she had in the suite, then returned to the Arena.

G'nort was there, and she told him about the incident. He was one of the very few she could trust now. She was increasingly paranoid. G echoed her thoughts when he said he thought the sting to have been a dart, with something to knock her out. He was less sure about the throat.

He escorted her back to the Fici Manor, after that, where she checked for Wil again. Not finding him, she left instructions with the staff in case he showed up. G went on home, then.

Later that evening, Jola went back to the arena for her shift. Still no Wil. She was seriously concerned at this point. She was also ever more paranoid. Normally flirtatious, she was reserved. When two men she didn't know were solicitous, she not only rebuffed them, she was downright rude, and even cruel to one. She couldn't trust them.

Someday, someday soon, something was going to break in her, more than it already has. She hoped she could make it through this turmoil before that happens.

After her shift, Jola went to the doctor. One of the rather shady, but completely competent doctors in New York City, one who would see her at all hours of the day and night, and, not incidentally, the one who had prescribed for her before.

She felt comfortable with Dr. Milgram. He was highly recommended, and she'd been to him on many occasions. She entered the restaurant he owned and asked the host for a table near the kitchen. This was the indication that she needed to see Dr. Milgram. The host, without missing a beat, grinned and led Jola behind some palm fronds to a door, and let her through the door.

Jola went up the stairs and was met at the top by Dr. Milgram. "Jola! I'd say it was good to see you but then you never come to me unless there's a problem. When are you going to make a social visit to cure *my* ills?" The doctor's grin was roguish, and his eyes twinkled.

Jola only shrugged with a smirk, as it was now painful to use her voice. She then opened her mouth and held her neck, with a grimace. Dr. Milgram hmmmmed and led her directly into a room saying, "Your throat then, is it?" Jola nodded, and he gestured to the examining table. "Sit up there, dear," he said, and walked to the cabinet to pull out some equipment.

"Open wide and say ahh, if you can," he said as he turned on the scopes light and held it up to her mouth. She watched him as he looked, and saw his frown. He pulled out a tongue depressor and held down her tongue, looking a bit longer before putting down the scope and looking into her eyes.

His voice was quiet, "You've no illness. You've been intubated, and either the one who did it wasn't adept, or ... hell, I don't know what can cause injury like that unless the person screwed up."

Jola frowned and roughly whispered "Why?" Dr. Milgram echoed her "Why? You don't know? Did you have a cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest? Were you comatose?" Jola shook her head. "I was drugged and knocked out," she said very softly and roughly, "I woke up with a sore throat, 18 hours later."

"Drugged, you say? How long ago?"

"Yesterday evening," she answered.

"Well, there's still a chance I can find out what the drug was, if that will help you any," Dr. Milgram offered. When Jola nodded, he went again to the cabinet and pulled out a syringe and vial. Jola took her jacket off and turned her right arm so that he had access. Dr. Milgram shook his head as he put a tourniquet on her upper arm, and turned her hand back over, "I'll take it out of the back of your hand. Less trouble for you." After he found a
vein, he inserted the needle and drew a full vial of blood while releasing the tourniquet. When that was done, he held a 2 x 2 over the site and withdrew the needle. "Hold that."

Jola hadn't winced the whole time, and now she held the gauze to her hand. "How long before you know?" she managed to ask. "Give me 8 hours," he responded. Jola nodded, and the doctor put a strip of tape over the gauze to hold it into place.

Jola pulled back on her jacket and hopped off the table. Dr. Milgram looked at her. "Pain medication?" Jola hesitated for a very long time as she mulled that over. It was tempting, sorely tempting. Just a word and she could have the comfort again. Instead, she thought of Wil and shook her head. "No. I'll do without." The doctor nodded and smile "Good. You don't need that stuff anyway. Never did."

Jola took out her wallet and looked at the Doctor. He held up 4 fingers, and she nodded, pulling out four hundred dollar bills, the currency they used here, and handed it to him without blinking. He smiled as he took the money, and she turned and walked out, then down and out of the restaurant.

This had given her more to think on, and maybe would lead to a clue. Now it was on to the next step.

The doctor sits in his office, and types in his notes on his secured computer.

-------------------

Time 0200 AM, January 9

Patient: Jola Feren Fici Savage

Complaint: Sore Throat

Assessment:

Patient arrived complaining of a sore throat, and presented with a marked reduction in speech ability. Upon assessment, patient's throat was found to be abraded significantly, though without danger of swelling closed at this point. Vitals were not taken.

Discussion with patient revealed she believed she had been drugged. Obtained a vial of blood (R/HA) for analysis.

Diagnosis:

Patient has been intubated, and the procedure was botched going in or coming out, it is impossible to tell which. No complications are expected.

Prescription:

Patient was offered pain medication and declined. There is nothing to be done aside from making the patient comfortable while the wounding heals.

The doctor saved the record and then exited his program, and locked the keyboard. His then went directly to work on the analysis of the blood sample.
