The subject of the post to the board was plain to see, it was scrawled across the paper in big red letters.
Amazing.
I, for one, am so thankful for the following excerpt from the official Challenge Rules:
All challenges and answer to challenge
must be sent to both the Standings Keeper
and Baron or Overlord being challenged
for purposes of notification and validation.
Challenges don't have to be posted here on this board. And with the amount of idiocy challenge postings receive in response, I certainly won't post my next challenge here.

Well, the whole point I (going to use I here instead of we) go through the formalities of placing the information on the boards is to keep the public informed as to what the reasoning is behind the challenge.
Otherwise you end up with Roland Sal Roa challenges Baron Doe for the 14th ring. Without any words on why I would challenge and how the Baron recieved my challenge ( insulted, greatfully, honorably, etc ).
Besides, by keeping the challenge private you open yourself up to even more insult. One such insult being that of acting in secret. I for one wouldn't say it but I believe there are some who have been accused of doing so in the past.
In closing: I'd have to advise anyone issuing challenge to do so publicly. As a safeguard against those who would belittle you for acting in private. Granted, they may belittle you in any case but I have seen many challenges where the challenger and Baron have dueled without harsh words from either side, supporters and all.

That's the problem.
Make it public, you get insulted. Make it private, you get insulted.
It's a rare challenge these days-- especially from or to anyone relatively new to the rings-- that is not followed with insult.

Acting in secret? It's not like the challenger is part of a conspiracy, or something like that. I see nothing wrong with keeping a challenge private - as Jola mentioned, it avoids all the ruckus started by one in every five or six challenges about honor, disloyalty, and/or Overlord intercessions.
However, I personally welcome seeing a short note on the board every now and then saying that Warlord Joe Shmoe is challenging Baron Juan Smyth for his ring. If Warlord Shmoe chooses to explain why he's challenging, it's his prerogative. If Baron Smyth chooses to go into great detail about his feelings, OK.
In summary, I personally think that posts should be made concerning a challenge. Just to keep everyone posted on the Arena news.

But Roland... no one else sees challenges like that. They're always the boring ones.
When I challenge one of these...years, it's going to be the biggest controversy anyone ever saw. I wonder if I should start selling advance tickets now....

I join with those that like ta hear of ta challenges and such. Over ta years, it does matter ta me and it would seem highly suspect and down right suspicious if a ring be up for a taker and I nae know of it.

I like to know when challenges are happening... but I don't like to see people insulted for making them.
I can definitely see why people would choose not to make a challenge known to the public, since heavy-- usually unwarranted-- criticism is never in short supply.
