What is wrong with you people??

Now that I've gotten your attention, let me begin.

Members of the Duel of Swords,

Since it occured to me after being here for months that I might want to get acquainted with the inner workings, so to speak, of the sport I participate in, I went to the first place I could think of: this ol' piece of cork on the wall. And what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a bunch of bickering and stressing over small things. Mind you, I recognize that not all of the arguments are over small things, but a great many of them are. I mean, is
the world really going to end if someone finds out about a challenge early? I doubt it, and yet everyone seems to be having fits over it in one way or another.

Being a relative newbie in the Arena, I know my words will be looked on with a grain of salt. I don't mind really, as long as it's looked on at all. That's all I can hope for.

Have any of you ever wondered why the majority of the people that stick around the Arena for longer than a month are jerks? Because being a jerk gets you attention in the DoS aparantly. People on a whole do not like being ignored and since nice people seem to get ignored here, nice people leave. Hence, all of the jerks around here. Luckily for all of you I'm stubborn, or I wouldn't be here either (kidding..just kidding). So many of you are so riled
up, so busy looking for the clenched fist, that you miss the hands that are open in friendship. The gods know how many times I alone have been ignored when trying to give a friendly greeting. Take some time out of your rampant gathering of peer-wins to greet a newbie. If they're kind in return, give them a reason for wanting to stay. If they only treat you with disrespect, send them on their way. Far too many of you hang on the line that
"respect is earned", resorting to throwing it in other people's faces, rather than using it as a guideline in your own life. To get respect, you have to give it first, even if they don't. If the line "respect is earned" gives you too much trouble, try this one on for size: "If it is to be, it is up to me".

I know, I know..."Who are you to tell me what to do?" Nobody, really. And really, I'm not demanding that any of you do this, nor do I expect it. I only hope you read this and think it over, take it to heart. Perhaps if people treated others with respect first, instead of waiting for it to come your way before they offered it, it'd be a bit calmer here.

Arguments are inevitable, people will disagree from time to time. Just remember that there is a person with feelings on the recieving end of your words. It is not necessary to attempt to destroy the person on the other end. This isn't a battle. There is no winning and losing side in a community such as this. Either we all win...or we all lose.

Just some ramblings from your friendly neighbourhood newbie,

Quilyn Silvertear

Just wanted to say that your post is absurd. Most of us have been here more than a month. Most of us however, are not jerks. I could name a lot, but I could name most of the people here that arent jerks. So, since you are a newbie, why dont you wait a little longer before you casually pass judgement on the entire group of people that "hang around" in the arena.

Humbly

Sir Leo,

My guess is that you only read half of what I wrote, right? Oh well, if you want to take it as if I spoke to you personally, it's not my problem.

M'lord Hunter,

Um..thanks, I think. By the way, I'm a she.

Quilyn Silvertear

Firstly, the term "newbie" ist, to me mind, a derogatory term, therefore wilt thou pardon me if I eschew the use of it. Now, if thee aire averse to controversy, disputes, bloodletting, politics, harsh comments, ramblings, and folk of an opinionated nature, thou art come to the wrong cavern. I should suggest to thee that perhaps thou might pursue less intense activities, perhaps taking up needlepoint or tending a garden somewhere.

Tis clear from thine jottings that thou art indeed new come to the cavern and the cork board. Tis verra interesting that thou wouldst comment that the "nice" people dinna linger, then give the perception that thee aire one of these "nice" people by making such comments ast,
"Have any of you ever wondered why the majority of people that stick around the arena for longer than a month are jerks?" How utterly droll that thee wouldst cast the "majority" of the personages that do enter the basement in such a manner. Aire thee perhaps acquainted with the "majority"? Or aire thee such a "jerk" that thee canst claim a working knowledge of those of similar inclination? Perhaps thine missive ist thine bid for attention, for
ast thou hast said that "being a jerk gets you attention."

Respect ist earned, Quilyn Silvertear, nae handed out ast candy might be, to still the temper tantrums of a child. Perhaps thee see nae need for a personage who hast been given a position of trust to breech said trust, tis certes thee may so opine. Yet tis nae less a breech of trust. If one canna stand the heat, Quilyn Silvertear, one shouldna play with fire. Anna what places themselves in the public eye must accept they shall be scrutinized.

Indeed, Quilyn Silvertear, welcome unto the basement, and perhaps thou might take a few moments of thine time, ast well, to peruse the histories ast well ast this ancient corkboard, for therein thee may gain insight, if that be what thee desireth rather than insulting the "majority of the people that stick around the Arena."

Lady Silvertear.

I think I might be the only person who is going to publicly agree with the spirit of your post.
You're right, being a jerk does get alot of attention around here... and being nice often gets you ignored or overlooked.
Bloodsport or no, such behavior wrong and shouldn't be tolerated.
However, I also defend the rights of some of those "jerks" to be the way they are. Many of them, while still being jerks, are at least respectful when they duel.

I also think you'll find that the jerks don't make up a majority of the duelers or even the newcomers... they're just a very vocal minority.

In closing... I think you have a very good point about respect. The truely honorable person shows respect to everyone, even their enemies. You can still "set someone straight" about their attitude, -and- do it in a respectful manner... That's worked for me in the past.

Keep up the dueling, and be true to yourself.

That was exactly my point. And not only that, but the fact that everything you said, Quilyn, had been said over ten times in the last two months. Not exactly in your words, but the exact idea. I find your post redundant and tasteless because seeing as you are new here, only the ignorant pass judgement as quickly as you did. Now, I'm not directly calling you ignorant, but I hope you see my point. To call the vast majority of us jerks, is rude.
Especially when you're new here. What right do you have to pass this judgement? And about reading only half your post, even if I did, the first few statements speak for themselves, and they speak very rudely. Now, I'm not passing judgement on you, because I dont even know you, but what I've seen on the board so far does not impress me. I rarely comment, and I never stir a commotion, so dont try to say I want attention. I dont need it. Most
people seem to think I'm a decent guy.... ::ponders:: . . . anyway...there it is.

Almost forgot,

Drake, you do realize by what she said, that because you've been in the arena over a month, that you're a jerk? Hmmmm. Yer one of the nicest people I know.. Thats scary.

Feh...::Goes into sarcasm:: The best idea for anyone, in my opinion, is not to read the posts and find out how much jerks everyone really is, and just look to the outside, to see the humble respectful people of this arena.

::Blinks:: jeez I'v been here over 16 months...::pouts:: I'm not a jerk..at least I'v never been accused of it before and I know people who have been here for over 36 months and they are alright.
I have to also say that you shouldn't just read the posts spend time with the real people for about a month and then give your opinion.

Lady Jonalyn,

"Firstly, the term "newbie" ist, to me mind, a derogatory term, therefore wilt thou pardon me if I eschew the use of it."

Your choice, milady. I really don't mind either way.

"Now, if thee aire averse to controversy, disputes, bloodletting, politics, harsh comments, ramblings, and folk of an opinionated nature, thou art come to the wrong cavern. I should suggest to thee that perhaps thou might pursue less intense activities, perhaps taking up needlepoint or tending a garden somewhere."

Nah, like I said, I'm stubborn like that. Besides, tending gardens just is not my style. ::chuckles as she writes:: I do remember saying in my original letter that disagreements will happen. I don't doubt that. However, I do notice that the harsh comments and such have come to an inordinate level, in my opinion. I know that not everyone
share my opinion, and I also remember writing that I didn't expect everyone to.

"Tis clear from thine jottings that thou art indeed new come to the cavern and the cork board. Tis verra interesting that thou wouldst comment that the "nice" people dinna linger, then give the perception that thee aire one of these "nice" people by making such comments ast, "Have any of you ever wondered why the majority of people that stick around the arena for longer than a month are jerks?" How utterly droll that thee wouldst cast the
"majority" of the personages that do enter the basement in such a manner."

Hmm, well, maybe I'm misreading what Lady Drakewyn described as the "rather vocal minority" as the majority.

"Aire thee perhaps acquainted with the "majority"? Or aire thee such a "jerk" that thee canst claim a working knowledge of those of similar inclination? Perhaps thine missive ist thine bid for attention, for
ast thou hast said that "being a jerk gets you attention.""

Whether I'm a jerk or not is for you guys to decide, but I tell you, if I really wanted a "bid for attention" I'd be out treating people with flagrant disrespect due to their rank, rather than trying to express my opinions here, If you know what I'm referring to.

"Respect ist earned, Quilyn Silvertear, nae handed out ast candy might be, to still the temper tantrums of a child."

Y'know, I figured somebody would use this line. Unfortunately it causes problems, not with you per se, by giving someone the idea that they should go around demanding that others earn their respect, rather than trying to earn it themselves. As I said, I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, speaking of you. And as I said in my first post, the better line to think on, in my opinion, would be, "if it is to be, it is up to me."

"Perhaps thee see nae need for a personage who hast been given a position of trust to breech said trust, tis certes thee may so opine."

Ah, so this is what has gotten you so riled up about my post? Really, in my opinion, I don't see this as a breach of trust, since it was the current Overlord himself that made the so-called "breech of trust". Since I was a kid, I've been told, "don't sweat the small stuff". Now that it's been found that the Standings Keeper didn't inform people of the challenge, I'd call this small stuff. Life's got enough important things for
all of us to worry about without us worrying about the not-so-important stuff.

"Yet tis nae less a breech of trust. If one canna stand the heat, Quilyn Silvertear, one shouldna play with fire. Anna what places themselves in the public eye must accept they shall be scrutinized."

I agree, but shouldn't the scrutiny be warranted first?

"Indeed, Quilyn Silvertear, welcome unto the basement, and perhaps thou might take a few moments of thine time, ast well, to peruse the histories ast well ast this ancient corkboard, for therein thee may gain insight, if that be what thee desireth rather than insulting the "majority of the people that stick around the Arena.""

My goodness what a hornets nest I've stirred up. ::chuckles again:: Thanks (I think) for your words. And really, I meant the new people, not everyone that has ever come into the Arena in the entire history.

Wondering if I should make a list of those I have to walk on eggshells for,

Lord Leo and, well, the community as a whole,

Just as an FYI, I didn't say everyone is a jerk if you've been here longer than a month. I probably over did it by saying "the majority". Perhaps it's just that they're so vocal they seem like more than they are.

And yes, Sir Leo, I agree with you. Lady Drakewyn is a very nice person.
