Thoughts from the Seventh

Patrons of the swords,

It has occured to me that many of the officials are trying to take away our civil liberties of public speech. If someone calls someone an idiot, I believe they are entitled to do what they please..the other person is entitled to respond or not as they see fit. And personally, if you can't take name calling, you don't belong here..or anywhere for that matter except maybe the Rainbow Room. You can't walk up to the boards and say "Hey, you can't say
that because...so and so will get upset and blah blah blah". Besides, arent the officials only supposed to call our duels, keep the standings and set up public events? I don't think they have the rights to take away our public speaking because of a name..((unless that name is vulgar or profane due to the AOL Terms of Service)) I thought the Council was supposed to make rules for the people i.e. civil rules not dueling rules..Oh well, maybe we'll just
make the Overlord and Barons figureheads and the officials the real rulemakers, a regular constitutional moarchy...this is crazy.

Daelin, I agree with your point to a manner of speaking. Freedom of speech should be allowed and so should freedom of opinion. However, freedom of speech should not give one an excuse to degrade another, or generally lower the standards of respect here at the duel of swords.

Baron Dae:

You bring up good points but there is also a few points which you missed.
People miss use their right at times to 'throw mud' as some might say. Take the subject to bitter extremes when the subject maybe nothing more than using a Fancy in the first round. Is this really in need of an offensive reply? Also, when the 'mud' is thrown, it hits somewhere, does it not? I don't believe Rhydin has yet to change its gravity. So, someone is the target for nothing. Now, this is where some consider the fun part to lay ... that
person hit by the mud feels a need to throw it back; more join in and before you know it, there is no longer a post being discussed. It is a free for all. Why? Because someone had to dig up something insulting that had nothing to do with the topic or barely related to the topic.
This is where the RDI's should step in. They will not trash your post if you are to stay on the topic or bring a few other points into the discussion. Therefor, there *is* no loss of speech. If you are *supposed* to be talking about that topic, then stay on it. Enough said?

I reserve the right to insult anyone I wish, however I wish to, no matter what.

And there's not a damned thing anyone can do about it.

We just gotta deal with it, I suppose.

Xeri,

I doubt that you even know what the post was about, so I'll make this short and simple and get back to the subject..

1) Donnae call me "high and mighty" as ye so bluntly put it..you don't even know what my feelings on much are because I have nae seen you or spoken to you of such, except this topic so please don't insult something you don't know.. and please, feel free to ask those that know me what kind of person I am if you seek to know and donnae believe me, but insults donnae help..that's why the right to speak on these boards is being discussed, because of
hurling insults..thank you.

2) I was talking about the officials rights to take the boards away, I commend them on excellent jobs of calling duels etc..etc...but to take away penning things is out of their boundaries, consider this and come talk to me if you feel I was out of line. And plus, our relationship with the officials is mutual, thus they cannae do much without us and we cannae do much without them...thank you sir, but please donnae hurl blind insults upon me if you
donnae know my protestations to the fullest.

Now onto the meat of this post, Evan is correct, but Evan, consider that although posts get off of track so to speak, whose fault is that? The general publics? No...not by a longshot..the people who begin arguing should have enough insides to admit they are arguing about a petty thing.
This is in no case, acceptable grounds to take away our "speaking" rights on these boards..besides, in a sport where people poke each other with sharp metal objects (among other things) to see someone bleed, insults are bound to fly, both on paper and through the air. As with most nations that offer free speaking throughout the realms, you should decide what you want to see and what you don't...good arguments, thanks for commenting on the subjects
everyone.

Baron,
I do indeed know what the post was about, and I say the RDI's call for us and they post the standings. How then are they not able to stop us from fighting with ourselves like children with no respect for anything or anybody? I for one think they can do what they feel is right and just. I was told this was the honorable Duel of Swords, the voice is 1-1 if a baron cannot understand the need for censorship, then who can?

Censorship? Official censorship is both immoral and disrespectful. People should be trusted to act responsibly. Some people don't always behave responsibly, but that doesn't mean take everyone's freedoms away. It means consider the problem individuals and find a way to deal with them as inidividuals.

Sir Percy,
I still stand that all are responsible for the few, guilt by association. As, then it would be the right for the higher powers at be((The officials)) to take action. Example: A man takes the crown and hands it to his wife. He then proclaims that she is Overlord, as long as he can defend the title. That all actions she takes will be the actions of the Overlord. Would the officials not then be called in to settle that matter?

Daelin has a point. What we say on this board should not in anyway be censored. If someone can't take the heat, get out of the fire. If you can dish it, expect to take it and even if you aren't dishing it, expect to take it.
But, on the same token, Evan brings up a good point. One of the biggest problems with the Arena is that people seem to avoid direct one on one confrontations. If we keep on passing insults on the board, and drawing the whole community into two people's fighting we aren't really accomplishing anything but getting the officials mad at us and involving everyone into a problem that could be talked out in a civilized manner, or, God-forbid, being taken
to a ring. I don't think insulting a person is in itself a complete atrocity, but when it goes back and forth between two people on these boards, that is when it needs to be resolved in private.
