Fellow duelists,

Some time ago prior to a disruption on the cork I penned a letter to the Renegades. I have openly volunteered myself to questions and ask that each of you consider making a statement to the community on the cork as to your particular views on issues at large such as:

1) The Role of a Baron
2) Intercessions
3) The Role of the Overlord
4) Newcomers to the rings and welcoming them

I encourage you to demonstrate civil tongues and pens regardless of the opinions you may agree or disagree with. Of course we will not all agree but let us see what each others views are. Those who wish to not disclose their opinions at large are free to send a missive to me personally.

::nods as he reads the missive from the Overlord and then thinks before penning up his own responses as per request of Dexter::

Very well Overlord, as you requested...my responses:

1) The Role of a Baron- I feel the role of a Baron is to both bear a title of a community spokesperson so to speak and to duel as one to. Although most people in the Arena can speak for themselves..I feel the Barons are the ones who are obliged to speak for them in Council..at least that's how I feel I should act..that's why I try to get personal with many of the duelers..That's why there are different alignments that reflect the communities
opinions...Renegade, Loyal and Neutral.

2) Intercessions-My feelings on Intercession is the same as it is on the Test of Worthiness...if you cannot defend your title..then you have no business carrying it, quite simply.

3) The Role of the Overlord- I feel the Overlord has the same role as a Baron..(see #1) Except the Overlord's role is on a grander scale...Overlords can be seen as the main role model for the dueling community as "The Supreme Dueler", but they should also be a reflection of the desires of the community and a push to get these desires carried out.

4) Newcomers to the rings and welcoming them- I try to welcome most new faces I see when they are open and warm and willing to be greeted. I try to help out and answer questions they may have. I think as higher ranks..(From Overlord-Swordsman and other Commoners) should open up to these newer ranks if they need help and really want it and make the Duel of Swords more of a home for the newer faces..

I thought that I would respond to this sice I nae post on the boards too often and it may be of interest to some on what I think of these. I'll take them one at a time:

1)Role of a Baron- I believe that a Baron shold be a representative of the skill and honor of the community. He/she should be an outstanding duelist who has earned the right to hold title and keep it. I also believe that there is a certain standard that a Baron should live up to, such as being a present figure in the day-to-day dealings of the community and trying to uphold the honor of the ring he/she bares.

2)Intercessions- I don't care much for intercessions. If ye won the title, it's yer job to defend yer right to wear it. I would only condole using intercession in extreme cases in which, by the Overlord's discression, the challenger would be so hurtful to the community as a title holder that the Overlord feels a need to step in. Otherwise, I'm pretty much against it.

3) Role of the Overlord- In my view, the Overlord should be the supreme and outstanding duelist of Swords. He/she also has the responsibility I mentioned with Barons, but even more so. It should be the Overlord's job to be a constant in the Arena and to take an active role in the Swords community. He/she should also try to get the opinion and ideas of the community and try to help it grow for the better, whether it be weekly posts suh as Eros did or
some other way.

4) Newcomers- I was a new comer to these halls under a year ago, so I know how tough it can be at times. If it had not been for those few elder duelists who had taken some time to at least answer a question or such, I might not have stayed. I admit, sometimes it is hard to be patient with the newcomers, but I think we owe it to the ones who helped us in our early days to at least show some courtesy to the newcomers nowadays.

So that's what I think. Feel free to critize and comment at yer leisure.

Overlord,

I will attempt to answer your queries as best as I can, though I am only a Warlord, though a previous title holder.

1) The Role of a Baron & 3) The Role of the Overlord, can be answered as one in the same with minor differences. Title duelers should be regular active duelers who try to make an appearence to duel atleast once a weekend or once every couple weekends so that they are out among the normal patrons getting a feel for the community's attitudes and issues. A titled dueler should be an example of atleast above average skill and prove that regularly, and
one who stands by what they beleive in regardless of the odds and the voices that may rise up. A titled dueler should be willing to take a stance on an issue and stick by it and not be swayed into political manuevering just to save their own hide. As an Overlord, one should be an example of "Supreme Dueler of Swords" type skill as well as one who is patient and willing to observe all sides of the issues. Barons, if they truely beleive they are
representives on a Council should seek more imput from the community when it comes to deciding issues that effect events of the rings.

2) Intercessions. I don't like them because as has been stated, you should defend yourself what you earned yourself, and not let others fight your battles. Recently overtime, I have grudingly agreed that some should have an obstacle put before them as much as possible to prevent them from being known as the 'leader' of the sport. It's extremely rare I have ever felt that way and it's only with much conviction that I ever would. DoS started with
people earning and defending their own titles and personally I think it was a friendly more enjoyable atmophere then.

4) Newcomers to the rings. Some are good and some are bad, and I do my best to be as nuetral about them as possible till they give me reason to think either way on them. If they ask, I answer questions, if they step out of line I am quick to smack them back into line. I am usually wary of newcomers till I have had a chance to bserve them, but if they ask, I'll answer.

Having some rest, I can now think with a clearer head to word my thoughts correctly. But then again, those who know me already know I'm not good at that either sometimes.

Like Ecore, I feel that the barons and overlord have similar roles. They should take an active role in the community, I feel, whether they sit in the arena and talk, write a post on the boards, or duel.
For reference, this is one reason why I am so disappointed at watching warlord's tourneys. Some people appear to try to win a prize for the tourney, then sink back out of the arena for another 3 months, never posting a thought or dueling a duel.

Regarding intercession, I am very indifferent on the issue, because I never plan on using it, thus have no way I can justify it myself. That's up to the dueler him/herself, who usually determines it by how the opponent challenged. However, in any case, I feel the baron(ess) should at least honor their first challenge by defending the ring themself. If they lose, "darn, maybe next time." If they win, "yipee." They have endured one of the
trials of being a baron/overlord.

I feel newcomers are important, for they too endure their first trials as a dueler. They're going to be here when some of us are long gone. I treat them kindly until they show they don't deserve kindness. Even then, I am very tolerant of most, because they are new. They have a right to mess up, as do all of us, but let's hope they're responsible with their mess-ups.

That's just my opinion.

::Mutters, returning to the boards::

You think when you get sleep, you think right. I forgot another opinion as to the roles of the baron and overlord.

The barons and overlord alike should be able to use good judgement. This is especially crucial when they must gather in a council and make a decision regarding some challenge. Their decision will reflect upon the community at large, and thus the role shouldn't be taken lightly.

He grabbed the letter in his hand... A brow raising..... the messenger looked at him.... waiting for the baron to say something.

"Who? Sweet bridgette... Why in the hell do people keep sending me this stuff?"

Looking at the messenger....

"I sure aint one of these barons..... hell I dont even know what a Baron is."

Tossing the letter on the ground he shut the door to his room, still very confused at what the hell was happening to him. He steped away mumbling something about Barons, Overlords, Axe murderers, Tax evaders... And of course all those crazy lunitics he had meet in the recent days. Not understanding one bit of it all.

You didn't exclude privious Renegade Barons.

1) The Role of a Baron: To beat everyone who challenges him.

2) Intercessions: Use it if you want to. Don't cry when it's used. If you use it, beat them.

3) The Role of the Overlord: To beat everyone who challenges him.

4) Newcomers to the rings and welcoming them: Why do they need to be babyed into this place? They're grown boys, they most likly already have a bladed instument of some sort. They don't need anything except a welcoming pounding.

To all,

I normally do not post much on these boards, but, I feel these to be questions that I would like answering, and may or may not get criticized for what I write.

The Role of a Baron: A Baron has earned his(or her) ring. He has either done so by defeating his peers and then a standing Baron, or by winning the ring through a warlord tournament, which also involves defeating peers. However, Barons should fulfill a role in the community once taking a ring. Many may look up to Barons, and they should set a new example for the new ones entering this sport, and for everyone else in these halls. Every challenge
set forth should be dealt with honorably, and the Baron should always try to defend his ring. Also, I feel that they, and everyone, should always stand up for what they believe.

Intercessions: I feel that intercessions are plain stupid. Why earn a Baron's ring if you do not wish to defend it yourself? I feel that intercession is just hiding behind the Overlord if you are scared of losing your ring. If you feel that the warlord is not worthy of a ring, and that is why you choose intercession, I am against that too. If the warlord is unworthy in your opinion, beat him off.

The Role of the Overlord: The Overlord is much like a Baron....many look up to him, and he should set a good example. Setting good, honorable examples would show the newcomers to the sport just what we should do, and therefore be for the better of the entire sport, for the newcomers today may stay for many years to come. Also, I feel an Overlord shouldn't summon a Champion, because much like a Baron, I feel that is just fear of losing the crown.

Newcomers to the rings and welcoming them: Many newcomers come and go. Some end up staying. We shouldn't be against all newcomers, but should welcome them and try to teach them what we do here. I have not been here that long...only 2 years, but I still feel that it is everyone's job to welcome newcomers, and to set good examples for them.

But then again...these are just my opinions.

I believe the role of a Baron is to serve as an example for all the other ranks below their own. Lead by example, not by words.

I'd rather there not be any intercessions, although I support their use when used for the right reasons. Those reasons are not clearly defined.

The role of the Overlord is the exact same as the role of a Baron with one exception. The Overlord should be someone very difficult to defeat in a duel.

And I think that newcomers should be treated just the same as everyone else who visits the Arena. With respect.

"Hmm..." ::scribbles::

1) Role of a Baron: To be a kick-butt dueler and keep the Overlord in check.

2) Intercessions: If you think a friend of yours is incapable of defending, due to illness or something, and the duel must go on, and the you don't deem the challenger all that worthy, intercessions are good. Otherwise, it's the baron's responsibility to defend his/her ring. And for challenges to the Overlord, I don't see anything wrong with intercessions since if the challenger if fighting for the title of "Supreme Dueler," it shouldn't come
easy.

3) Role of the Overlord: To kick some serious butt, and set an example along with the barons for newcomers and such.

4) Newcomers to the rings and welcoming them: Patrons should be friendly and respectful, and allow the newcomers a chance to duel. I'm a newcomer myself, and that's all I ask.

1) The role of a Baron :

The role of the barons consists of many things, too numerous to fully account for here. They include, but are not limited to : Using their station as a base for usurping or maintaining the current Overlord. Meeting their challenges in a timely manner, and winning. Their duty is not, however, to meet their challenges courteously. Also, it is not a Baron's duty to the station or the community to coddle infant duelists and teach them which end
of a sword to use. Most things that fall outside of "Duel, win, and follow the rules," are filed under personal obligations, and not the "role of a Baron."

2) Intercession : Go for it. If you're willing to let everyone know you're afraid to fight your own fights, don't bother to lift a finger in your defense. I'm sure it's possible to maintain a title for several months by doing this, until someone gets fed up and has a shot at you. Again, the use of this device falls under personal code. If you feel justified in not defending your title yourself, don't. What's the worst that will happen? You will
be both chastised and praised. Either way, it's up to you.
3) The Role of the Overlord
The Overlord does have one main and vital duty : Win. He doesn't have to shake your hand, give you flowers, or kiss your baby. He just has to wipe the floor with you in the rings, and he's had a good day. It would be nice if the Overlord were always a noble and respectable person, but let's face it.. being polite has nothing to do with being the best. Ask BRK, I'm sure he'll give you some insight. If you don't like the Overlord, if he's not
your idea of a good role model, or the perfect gentleman.. Hit him five times and do a better job. "Duel, win, and follow the rules," sums it up here too.
4) Newcomers to the rings.
A debated topic.. why? No one has any special obligation towards anyone else. The DoS is a community, rich in history and tradition, based of the lives of countless individuals.. and so is the Bastille. So is a dungeon. Newcomers will either be smart enough to survive their first few months in the rings and progress on, or they will be too slow or stupid to survive, and will be removed from the circuit for the good of themselves and the
community. That is not to say that I believe one should show rudeness to someone based on experience, or lack of it.. but one should not show favor either. It's one thing to explain to them how to arrange a duel.. It's another to refrain from ripping one of their muscles off their bone because they're "new."

And that is how it is. As I see it, anyway.
