He had just gotten done with a duel. He stepped from the ring and over to the bar to grab a quick drink. After lifting the glass to his mouth he called out for another duel.

“All right... who wants some of me?” He looked around for anyone interested in facing him. Taylara turned to look at him, but said nothing yet. He called out again after sometime. “All right... who wants a crazy piece of me?” He smiled a bit at this, expecting someone to want to duel now. Again Tay turned to him, this time flashing look of anger in her eyes. He had never seen this before in her, so he shrugged it off. “Ah someone must want some
of this.” He ran a hand down his body showing off a bit, trying to draw the duel. This time Tay finally turned to him and nodded.

“Call it in M'Lord”

“Cool,” He said as he walked over to the queue keeper

“Ya'll nae think *Cool* when I get done M'Lord.” He smiled at this.. already the talk had
begun, and he figured this to be a good match. He put in the duel, and Tay went back to
talking with Nessa and others. It wasn’t long though, before the announcement came
from Drake.

“Ring of Blue, Taylara vs. Alex.” He stepped into the ring in his usual fashion,
offering a simple nod to both the parties involved. He slide his short sword out of his bag
and then turned to face her once more. Meanwhile Tay also advanced to the ring, pulling
out her own sword, “Melan” as she did. She stepped into the ring and gave the sword a
twirl as she held it mere inches from his chest. Indeed this was going to be a great match
he thought. He could still see the anger within her eyes, as he slid back, lowering his
stance. The smile started to form on his face as he looked into her eyes. Tay turned and
sliced a salute to Drake, and then turned back, sweeping down in a salute to him.

“Duel well....and with honor”

“As always,” was his only reply. Drakes voice rang out as they moved forward.

“Blue, One. Alex and Tay move in for quick points to start the duel.”
Indeed it did start fast. He reacted on instincts as he slid forward. He saw the shoulder
dip down slightly, and so he brought his own blade up. He quickly arched it over
bringing it down, knowing that she could not counter the move with a block. Yet, a
counter did come. Her dipped shoulder was to get her lower, where she could slice the
blade across his own thigh. He only smiled slightly seeing the anger pass for a moment as
she cringed. Alas, it came back though as her empty eyes followed his movement, anger
etched on her face. This only forced his own smile out more, as they both took know time
in pushing forward.

“Blue, Two. Alex turns a quick fancy parry to knock Tay's attack away.”
He did not fall for the feint. He saw the look in her eyes, knew she would bring the heat
to him. He played the safe parry upwards knocking aside the sharp thrust, as he pulled
back away from the battle. The smile grew on his face, it was living up to what he knew
it would. He shook his finger at her in a mocking manner as he said, “So angry..” Her
own eyes watched his every move, her anger burning deep now. She gave no reply. He
started to step around the ring. One foot sliding past the other.

“Blue, Three. Alex swings high... Tay does... the wrong parry... ouch.”
His own feint worked to perfection. He drove forward his eyes looking low at her thigh.
The blade screaming as it split the air. She moved to block it, and as she moved he
quickly twisted his wrist over and brought the blade down across her once again. He
showed no mercy with that cut as he cut her forehead open. She edged in close to him,
looking at him. Her hand rose to touch the cut along her forehead. Looking at him, she
quickly slapped him with the hilt of Melan. He stumbled back, the force being powerful.
He smiled once more as his hand went up to his cheek.

“Anger is your worst enemy... you must defeat it to stand a chance against me.” He
offered another smile as he wiped at the blood that started to trickle down.

“I duel you for one reason M'Lord, and one reason only.” Her statement was as cold as
winter.

“And what is this reason Tay?...” He kept that smile, not affording her the pleasure of his
pain. The blood smeared across his face now....

“Blue, Four. Tay... calm down and think about your moves.”
He flew in at her, his blade reversed back down from last round. She reacted, throwing
out her blade in what seemed a wild manner. The slash gave her no protection to her legs
as he drove his body into her. He tackled her down, as she yelled for him to get off. She
kicked him as he rolled to the side, watching her. Pulling back from the encounter, he got
to a safe distance where he started to think. Something was wrong, very wrong. The first
round she attacked with tenacity. She brought him pain, enticing him to strike back at
her. The next round she came at him, and now as he thought about it, it was obvious. She
gave away what she was doing on purpose. It wasn’t that it was a skilled block, but rather
that she gave away her move. The third round was the same. She had to know he was
coming in high. Yet, she brought her own blade low offering no protection for herself.
And now... Now she took a hit that could have been avoided. Even Drake could tell this,
and that is why she made that last comment. She wasn’t trying to win this duel, but why?
What was this reason for dueling him? Then it came. The voice to his head, her voice. He
looked at her as their eyes made contact.

“Don’t you see? After you beat me I will become a Grandmaster, and loose my Warlord
status, and all my perwins. And you will be the one to do it.” He shook his head. She had
talked to him of leaving, and he told her not to. Know she was using him as a pawn.
Making him kill her last tie to the Duel of Swords. Her only reason to stay here. He shook
his head more as he looked to her.

“Son of a......” it faded out below his breath. “I am not gonna continue this.” He dropped
back slightly. Drake caught the words and glanced to him.

“Ya will!!”

“The hell I will!!” He dropped his sword arm down to his side.

“The hell ya will, now pick it up!!!” She motioned to his sword. Drake could only shake
her head as she knew that what was going on was deeper than the surface. Tay stepped
closer to him her own blade held out at him. Alex made no effort to move, save to back
up.

“I will have no part in this.. I don’t know you and yet you still bring this guilt upon me.”
His voice rose at her. People started to look over. They knew naught of what was
happening. Know one did except the two in the ring. No one knew why he refused to
fight.

“I bring nothing upon ya....ya bring it upon yerself.”

“Screw you,” he said as he backed off. Rather he yelled it for others started to look as he
said it. Several eyes opening in shock.

“Blue, Five. Alex just backs away as Tay maneuvers for position.”
He kept backing off, disengaging from the battle. She followed him quickly.

“Duel damn ya.” She came to him, he backed away, wiping at the blood on his mouth.

“Don’t make me your damn reason.... I did nothing to deserve this.” He tried to keep a
distance. She smacked at him with the flat of her blade, trying to get Alex to fight, but he
would not. Cas spoke out from outside the ring.

“Alex.... Patience.” Yet even as he spoke, Drake called to him.

“Cas, leave it be” Alex never heard them though. He only stared at Tay.

“Raise yer blade against me M'Lord.” She was demanding now. He offered only words.

“Why should I? Why should I have the sleepless nights? Why should I feel the guilt?”
His own voiced raised now so that they were both yelling at one another. She told him
that he should not feel guilty, he didn’t even know her. “Hell, I know that you are using
me.” She thwapped him, egging him on to duel.

“Blue, Six. Alex keeps backing away, and Tay swipes at his leg.”
Again he backed off for the second time. She hit him full force this time, as he stood
there. He grunted loudly, but maid no effort to retaliate. He finished what he was about to
say.

“And sure as hell, I don’t like being used.”

“I nae be usin' ya M'Lord.”

“The hell you aren’t.... You tell me you are going to leave... Then you make me finish
your last tie here to the swords. Find someone else to do it.... cause I refuse to be a part of
this”

“What's it to ya.....it holds no meaning ta ya.”

“Blue, Seven. Alex keeps backing away... and Tay is wary, not committing just yet”
Again he backed off for the third time as she moved to the side to cut him off. His sword
still hung down by his side.

“Duel, damn ya” He only shook his head.

“What’s it to me? When a gifted member of this area chooses to leave it is IMPORTANT
to everyone. And I will be damned if I am the cause of you leaving.”

“Then why did you leave Avery?” He didn’t here at first as he still yelled at her.

“You say you are to leave... and this is your last tie.... WHAT?” He looked at her. Nessa
looked over, half the people in the Annex looked over.

“Ya heard me! Yer nae deaf. Dumb sometimes, but nae deaf.”

“I aint Avery for gods sake. Whoever the hell he was, I aint him.. I am Alex!” Drake
patted Nessa arm telling her to lets the two of them work it out. Nessa looked on chewing
her lip, worrying herself.

“Raise yer blade!”

“Leave me be!”

“Defend yourself! Finish yer duel....”

“Blue, Eight. Now they're just standing there, shouting at each other.”
They both stood there, disengaged from the duel, only yelling.

“Damn it, hit me. Take your damn win. Stay here. I will not give you the reason to
leave.” She yelled at him to duel, and he said. “ I swear I wont.”

“Swear all you want, yer word is nae any good.”

“Up yours... you don’t know nothing about me... You don’t even know my name.”

“Ya see.... someone once gave me his word that he would be here for me...standing at
my side, and his word was nae good either.”

“Well I aint him.. so stop taking this out on me!!”

“But it was you!!!”

He could only lift his head up at this last statement. He mumbled something to himself.
Trying to get the strength to overcome this. She shouted for him to duel. “You want me
to duel? You want me to send you on your way?... you want me to give you the reason
you are looking for to leave? You want me to feel guilty? Well I cant do that.”

“I already 'ave my reason.” Nessa took one last look at the two of them as she let out a
sigh and left the room.

“Blue, Nine. The two of them just stand there for now.”
Again he stood there. For the fifth round in a row, he did nothing, and now she joined
him. She swung at him again, and he pulled back with the hit. It was nothing more than
to get him to duel. A single tear fell down his cheek. He didn’t want this. And then his
eyes shot open. He had a decisive lead. If this continued he was going to win by points.

“Blue, Ten. Alex goes with a half-hearted thrust... that just doesn't quite reach the
distance.”
It shouldn’t have even been called a thrust. He just kinda pulled his arm back,
knowing she would get the point for it. And she did pick up the advantage. He would
bring this back. He would.

“Blue, Eleven. Alex goes back to just standing there... and Tay isn't doing anything
either.”
He went back to disengage. His sixth for the match, and her fourth. They could
only look to each other. He couldn’t do this.

“Just hit me! Finish this duel.”

“I already 'ave M'Lord. Deeper then ya know.” He sighed.

“Blue, Twelve.”
Drake shook her head and no longer spoke. They both stayed still looking to each other.
Each wanting the other to strike out. Each wanting to lose. She lowered her own blade.

“I don’t want this Tay.”

“I dinnae ask ya what ya wanted.”

“Blue, Thirteen.”
There was nothing for drake to say, she could only watch.

“Why me, why does it have to be me?”

She replied, “Ya should know that answer M'lord.” He only threw his hands up in the air.

“Blue, Fourteen.”
That was all that was said. Alex looked to both Tay and Drake.

“One more round,” Tay said to him. He looked once more, and then spoke to Drake.

“Drake, I will have more part in this duel.” With that he dropped his sword and left the
ring. He went to his table and grabbed his bag. Drake nodded as he left the ring. Tay
asked him if he couldn’t finish a duel. “Not with what is at stake.... no I cant.” He
shrugged. She told them he had nothing at stake in this. “Then you don’t understand.”
She yelled at him to duel, and they exchanged words. “You want to leave... and you are
using me to have an excuse, someone you don’t know. I wont be a part of it.”

“Yer nae an excuse.”

“The hell I aint.”

“Donnae flatter yerself M'Lord.” He looked to her again.

“I want your best... not some unskilled crap that you just did...” Tay looked up to Drake,
asking her to finish this one duel.

“I cannot call the last round unless both duelists are in the ring Tay.” Alex looked at Tay,
and then moved into the ring. His bag was held over his shoulder, and he made no effort
to get near her. They stood in opposite sides as the final round was called. It was what
she wanted, and he gave it to her.

“Blue, Fifteen.”
Nothing was said, it was obvious. Fifteen rounds had come and gone. Alex had
disengaged a total of ten times while Tay had done so for the last eight rounds.
Drake stood up and left, as the dueling for the night was finished. Tay bowed to him.

“Well dueled.”

“Screw you”... he offered an apology to Drake. “I apologize for what has happened
here tonight.” She quietly said she understood. Bu now everyone was watching. “Go on,
get the hell out of here. That’s what you wanted all along, and you had to use me. Well
screw you... that’s all there is to it. She stepped past him, and withdrew a ring from her
pocket. She placed it in his hand.

“Guard it well.” Then she left. He took the ring in his hand and watched her leave. If he
had looked a the ring he would have remember it to be the one he threw away before.
The one that he saw when he first woke up that one night in the outback. Yet, he didn’t
look. He only dropped it to the ground, and left himself, mumbling to himself.

“That is one thing I wont do for you.”

She slipped back to the arena,, searching..... She saw the ring glisten. Scurrying over she reached down and clutched the ring of the 12th tightly in her hand. Softly she spoke, " Damn ya Avery, why can ya nae remember....", her voice pleading. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she held fast to the ring he fought so hard to obtain. Placing the ring
back upon her chain she clasped it about her neck. Falling to her knees she sobbed, "I 'ave done all I can ta get ya ta remember, but I 'ave failed ya...I am so sorry, Avery". Rising and heading towards the stairs she glances to the rings..... "Ifn ya cannae remember Avery, then ya cannae remember we stood together, here, that night".... Scurrying up the stairs and out, his last words echoing in her thoughts.
