Junior League of DoS/Title Challenge Qualifying

After the recent debate of children dueling and inexperienced duelers shooting up the ranks and trying for a title right away I began thinking on some things. The following is an idea I would like to hear some imput on.

Now some would argue that just reaching Warlord and getting the required peer wins is enough to be qualified for challenging for a title, it's in the rules that way at least. And yes, that is all you need to do by the basics of the sport. However, if a dueler makes Warlord in a weekend, gets all their peer wins the next weekend, then challenges as soon as the Standings come out for the third weekend, they are probably going to get a lot of flak
by individuals such as myself. I am not saying my way is the ultimate right way for the sport, though I wish it was somedays. And my brief example is extreme for the best scenerio, but I have seen many duelers who within one cycle started dueling in DoS, got Warlord, and then challenged for a title as soon as they achieved the minium required peer wins. Those who failed usually disappeared soon after or quit dueling. Those who succeeded usually
couldn't defend their first challenge to their title, and hence disappeared soon after or quit dueling. The VERY rare exceptions are those who succeed, defend a few, or if they failed, were humbled to waiting for awhile before the next attempt.

Personally, I wish all that come and duel and become part of the community stay, regardless of how well they do in the duels, and in challenges. I put in enough time and energy to try and get to know some or teach some and then they disappear because of impatience. Not that I am the most patient of course. I remember when Siera Red challenged for Overlord, she won her first Baron ring in the orginal Tourney of Nine like I did, she stated
something to the effect..."After being here for two years and apart of this community as an establised figure I find myself ready to quest for the mantle of Supreme Dueler of Swords"... Obviously, most respected her as a dueler and as an individual.

So on to my idea. I think there should be some sort of additional requirement or standard established officially, before they can actually challenge for a titled rank. Perhaps activeness in DoS for a certain period of time, or perhaps another level or step, an additional obstacle for a dueler to overcome before pressing challenge to a title rank. My idea stems from the feeling I have that I personally don't see the rank of Overlord and Baron as
special as I once did. Partly because of seeing challenges made by Cris and Jayc to Overlord with their records, and challenges like Sara's to Baron who hasn't even been active for a full cycle, especially not as a Warlord. With Cris and Jayc they were already barons, so that is perhaps a different issue.

And, though I have nothing against children dueling, perhaps a "Junior League", seperate from the "Pro", or adult level of competition, might be an idea as well. Or, perhaps everyone has to go through a "Junior League" period before stepping up the the actual "Pro" level. I have some thoughts and ideas, but am curious what others think.

Mind if I take the word "junior" and ever-so-slightly change the entire reason you used it, just to present an intriguing idea? Good. Or too bad.

I think that there should be a rank of Junior Warlord of 15 to 24 wins over losses, and the 25+ WoL guys would be Full Warlords, or High Warlords. The only true difference in the ranks would be that a Junior Warlord would require more Peer Wins to challenge, or maybe the Juniors could only challenge Barons. Well, community, what do you think?

Quizxs
Did I just come up with a good idea?

Ecore~~~

I don't know if this will fly, but I agree that a duelist should be an active member of the community before challenging. Holding a titled rank is more than a piece of jewelry. It's a part of the history. I'd like to see a requirement in the Terms of Challenge stating that the challenging Warlord must have been active in DoS for at least one full cycle BEFORE issuing challenge.... Two full cycles if they are skipping Baron and challenging
straight to Overlord. I think that the time requirement would give the challengers the chance to learn some of the history and traditions of what it is they are going to become a part of if they succeed in their challenge. Just my two pence......

::Tries not to start a war over this, but to put his thoughts on cork::

To whomever,
I am planning to challenge a certain baron or baroness. I have personal reasons to challenge this person. I haven't been in the DoS a full cycle but I have climbed very quickly. When and if I get the rank and needed peer wins, would you bash me for challenging? If so why? Would it not be more sportsman like to challenge me if I win and let it be if I don't win. I am not trying to get a fight or attack you or anything. I just feel that age
isn't important. Skill is.

More than likely.

>If so why?

Cause thats just the way it is.

>Would it not be more sportsman like to challenge me if I win and let it be if
>I don't win.

In the few years Ive been here, I havent seen very many concerned with sportsmanship.

Hope this clears it up for you.

Not wanting to bash eh? I can actually smell the sarcasm coming from the paper you nailed up there. A distinctive lime flavor. Cletus just answered you with all honesty, that's all. Why don't I help a little myself....Yes, they will most likely hunt you down with torches and cudgels, and throw the rotten produce from this year's harvest at you. But me personally, I'd leave you alone. But um....you're kind of inviting the bashing here. I read that
you are ranked a GrandMaster. And you are already telling the world that you got a problem with a Baron and plan to challenge. Friend, that is inviting trouble.

Interesting...

Personally, I find nothing wrong with letting everyone know your intentions. Admittedly, it's probably going to make achieving your goal a bit harder as there are people out there who will wish to see you fail...
But, being honest enough, and confident enough to speak your mind and set your goals for all to see is a good thing... as long as you don't let your confidence turn into arrogance.
I would, however, suggest you wait for a full turn of the cycle past the day you make Warlord before you challenge... unless you feel your grievance is such that it cannot be put aside.
If that is the case, I wish you luck.

I don't fully understand...I wouldn't bash anyone...Intentions are just that, intentions and they don't amount to much as we see throughout history, unless they are followed through. It is thrilling for a Warlord to offer challenge to a Baron or Baroness or even the Overlord, but if this was truly an "intent to Challenge" why not speak of who you are planning on challenging? Unless of course it was just a generalization
that you were going to challenge at one point in time or another..

Yes, I would bash. Why? You are one of the few people in the arena who I hate. I personally hope the baron you challenge beats a third eye out of you and makes it black like the other two will be after the challenge.
For the community's knowledge, one thing I will never be is humane to this jerk.

Dear Sirs and Madams:
To you Ecore I find your idea refreshing. Though I have not been here at the DoS very long at all, I do feel that those who have been here longer have a sense of class and loyalty and dignity that others do not have. I, as a newcomer, try to emulate their example, but there are those who just want to be overlord, and if they can't get it, want to leave. I feel that the DoS is more than having your name under a rank title on a sheet of paper, and I
am positive there are those that agree with me. Though I am not sure what measures ought to be taken to reduce this, I am glad that it has been brought to the forefront and am happy to assist whatever action is taken, if any.

To those who are arguing over poor Xeric, though I am rather fond of him, I'll just let you be.

Xericmues,
Those are some pretty big words you're talking with. Can you back them up? I, personally, think that you are somewhat cowardly. You have the guts to come up here to the boards and write down all these claims. But, when you are spoken to in the Arena, you are afraid to admit to which Baron you have a problem with. That is just plain ignorance. Don't come up here and tell someone you don't like them without saying who it is. If you're going
to do something, do it right. First, become a Warlord. Then you must sieze the ten peer wins you require and state your challenge. Yes, you will be ridiculed. You see, you challenge because you say you have a "personal" problem with a Baron. You will be ridiculed because that may cause people to have a "personal" problem with you. You learn to take it like man and shake it off. If you can't handle the words being thrown at you, don't make
these claims, and don't challenge. That is, if you ever become a Warlord. There is a proverb that I think suits you best in this situation, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen." Think about it.

Just my two cents,
Phil
