((The following is not a post. It is a written piece of a storyline for the reading enjoyment (or not) of the members of this forum.)) "Scuse me, Miss Luthien." The Elven Queen turned with an expression of mild surprise to find Zaradda emerging through the grove, a light breeze tugging at the hem of his cloak as he walked. "I was readin' the post on the board thingie.." he continued in an apologetic tone, idly securing his hands beneath his billowing overgarment. "An', well, I didn't mean ta make you feel bad." He shifted as he spoke, a brief glimpse of a dirk hilt betrayed by the subtle movement. The Baroness lowered her gaze casually as she offered reply. "Often times when people do not think before they speak, others will end up feeling bad." Zaradda nodded with expressed acknowledgment, one hand surreptitiously slipping under the cloak. "I wish I could ease your burden..." His voice remained masked with an air of calm sincerity as he lifted his head, a glint of enlightenment evident in his expression. "But perhaps, I can." Luthien shot him a curious glance, coaxing him toward explanation. "Oh?" "Tell me Luth.." he continued, "have you ever wished for a place where you can relax, and ride the void.. no sound, no interruptions? Just you, and a huge expanse of relaxation?" She took scant time to consider the query. "No actually.. I'm much to busy to think about such unaffordable things." Zaradda pressed the issue, lowering his voice to a softer tone. "Oh, its quite affordable.. trust me..." His right hand tightened around its sought objective. Luthien allowed a moment more, the two standing in silence save for the faintly wailing breeze. "If you'll excuse me, Rad." Her tone offered little room for appeal as she turned to walk back through the forest toward town. "Ah... wait, Luth," Zaradda pleaded as he hurried after the departing Baroness. Luthien quickened her pace in light of the bizarre insistance. "Good day, Rad." "Perhaps a hug..." He attempted a broad smile to alleviate her obvious trepidation. "To make up?" His right hand slid from beneath his cloak, carefully concealed by the garment, the serrated dagger palmed lightly. Luthien backed away, clearly apprehensive as her movements insinuated. "If you apologize, I accept. Really... I'm in a hurry." She found herself grasping for words. Zaradda stiffened noticeably. "Stop." Luthien lifted a brow at his sudden shift of manner, though he attempted to mask it with a friendly offer. "I'll walk you." Luthien continued to retreat before him. "It's not far... but thank you anyway." Her heart began to race as Zaradda continued forward, his right arm positioned behind the flowing span of the cloak. "Relax Luth..." the words flowed forth almost vacantly. "We all need... to relax." He sunk the dirk back within the sleeve of his cloak, raised his arms in suggestive intent to embrace. "Come now." "Why do you insist on following me?" Luthien edged away from him, hoping to spot a means of escape. "I'd like to chat." She managed a small smile in reply. "Maybe sometime later, I've pressing business..." She grasped for some evasion. "At the Bureau of Mines." Zaradda circled slowly around her, flicked the dirk into his palm in a loose grip, ever on her blindside. "Why so troubled?" He arched his brows in a blatant facade of curiosity. "Perhaps it's the weather... it's been dismal lately." He maintained a smile as he chattered aimlessly. "But, you know.. the new staff member, Tyran, was serving a pie; t'was to die for." Confusion washed over Luthien as Zaradda continued to speak in his placid tone. "Really..." She felt unable to conceal her worry. "I'm late already." Zaradda bowed his head briefly, an ominous grin spreading across his lips as he rushed forward, lashing out with the dagger. "Down with the feminists!" The blade cleaved the Baroness' scapula, sank in. The attacker released the hilt, roughly shoved the inanimate body of his victim to the round. Her head hit solidly against a rock as she fell, Zaradda fled through the brush.^~Continued...

^~ A shout echoed from within the edge of the nearby forest, more than shrill in comparison to the quiet day about town. Dalan's senses honed forward on the approximate source, his feet already carrying him forward with drastic hurry. He pushed through the thick brush on the periphery of the grove that gave way into a small clearing, and there she lay, a trickle of blood running down her back to stain the dense earth. He took a cautious step forward to investigate the scene, seeing none other than the body of the Baroness. The heavy pound of footsteps sounded some distance away, followed by Dalan's squinted gaze, but he presumed the attacker to have gained sufficient ground on him, and let them retreat. He'd seen her few times, but the face pulled his memory forth; Luthien, the name came with vague recollection. He knelt beside her, spotting the hilt that protruded from her upper back and gently lifted her head from its pillowing stone. He raised her lifeless body in his arms, wondering briefly if she had even a breath of life within her, and rushed down the mainstreet in seek of a healer.

Sometime very late that night:For a few sweet moments, she felt the warmth of his presence and the contentment of his love. He had come to her, warmed her cold hand with his own. It was the small moment of "here" that began to bring her back from.....''there''. And then her hand slipped back down upon the bed as her husband left to seek out her assailant.Luthien awoke to a numbing headache and a body tightly constricted by bandages. There was little light in the small, cold healers shack and there was no one about. Wait, what was that irritating noise. She turned her head, at a great cost of pain impulses to see the prone form of a shoddily robed sleeping, snoring, thick-bearded man. Her weary eyes surveyed then the dilapitated hovel. The dirt floor. The stench of unwashed linens. It was time to get out of here. Wherever here was. How did she get here....Now THAT was a memory best left unrecalled! But she had opened the gate and the incident began to return, bit by bit....all but the face. She had the sudden feeling of falling backward, but it was only imagined.... she stifled her mind. For now. With effort, she rose from the bed. Her right arm was bound by a bandage that encircled her upper body. She found that her arm did not pain her, but her right shoulderblade throbbed with an intensity that matched that of her head. The snoring man did not stirr.Luthien stumbled out into the cold RhyDin night to find Iain.

Red.Blood red.It was all around him, in his eyes, his mind, his thoughts, as he read the note from his once-predecessor, Xenograg thu-Darelir. Luthien, attacked and wounded, possibly near death. Worry was not one of the things he was best at experiencing, but rage... rage, he was well acquainted, and had been for centuries. He found her, and stayed a short while in the hut where the healer cared for her. However, knowing that there was little he could do to bring her away from the brink of the beyond, and suspecting she had little sensation of his presence, he prepared to go.A gentle brush across her mind, reassuring her unconscious thoughts, was halted when her own surface remembrances gave a face to her attacker. He rose, and immediately made for the Arena to confront Zaradda Eltorçh. He was, however, not there; someone - he didn't recall who, nor did he particularly care - informed him that his prey was at the Golden Ivy, and thence he went with all haste. He arrived, with several folk from the Arena trailing behind him. In later hours, as his body lay quiescent, his mind would ponder that fact; he strongly suspected that the mob which followed him was far more concerned with not missing what might happen than with the participants. As he entered, Zaradda was in a duel with General Alabaster, and losing. Only Perrinis' firm conviction that the duel conclude was enough to keep Iain from launching into the midst of it... once over, however, the battle was joined. At first, as always was the case with Iain MacKenzie, the weapons were words. He accused... he berated... he cursed Zaradda, finally severing his own concern for him which had remained never-spoken for the duration of their acquaintance. And then, Zaradda changed into the bat, and took Colleen hostage... and once again, Iain faltered.Chaos ensued. In time, the bat-creature released Colleen, having forged some sort of symbiosis with her. Iain, seeing his chance, charged up the stairs after his fleeing enemy. Unable to avoid a spray of acidic bile from the beast's maw, he recoiled, and suddenly felt both the slice of a dagger into his kidney, and the sharp rap of a blunt object at the base of his skull. He would never have memory of the painful bounce down the flight of stairs that left him motionless and comatose on the floor of the Golden Ivy.

Drawn to the GIT.It was not an evening she cared to remember, again. Dark days, darker nights, what does not kill us makes us weep. By the time she could extract minor details of Iain's fate at the hands of her own assailant and those who fought to save Colleen, she was overcome with the fever, infected by Zaradda's weapon. By the graciousness of G'nort and Ariana's hospitality, she was whisked to a room where she was healed, and slept the night. Once during her fitful sleep she awoke to the sound of a crying newborn. Intending to care for the babe herself, she was at the chamber door before she was awake enough to realize that it was Ariana's child who's cry broke the stillness....and not her own. Puzzled at her actions, she returned to the comfort of the blankets and slept again.Next morning, Luthien sped directly to RhyDin hospital to sit with her husband. She would remain there until he awoke, with the exception of her league match aboard the Kissing Dragon that eve. She knew that Iain would be upset if she did not duel, there was no point in arguing that....not even in his unconcious state.Perhaps he would be pleased to learn of her victory when she returned to his side later that night.
