What if someone wins then gets run over by a run-away donkey at the fair the next day. Then the donkey eats the ring, but is shot a few hours later. Someone, upon disposal of the donkey, finds the ring then who shall they give it to?

To all,

I must agree with the others. What good is a prize if it means absolutely nothing. A person gets to wear jewlry and do nothing with it. I thought we had already had a discussion saying that Baron's rings were not just jewlry, not just a rank, but represents a dueler that can help to lead the community. If your willing to give this rank to a commoner or other such rank, and let them do nothing but sit there wearing it, then I just don't see the
point. Barons are supposed to, in a way, lead us...personally, I don't want a commoner who can not defend, not challenge, not do anything with a ring, leading me.
But, this is the way I see it.

I'll field part of this, as I am the Standing's Keeper.

Given that Baron Oakenshield is aligned Renegade to the Crown, and Baron Shiv Blade has declared no alignment and will thus be aligned by the decree of the Overlord...
I would believe it to be within the full rights of the winners of the Tournament to petition for Loyal Alignment. Of course, should the Overlord not answer the letter within the two week period, the petition would fall out of use when the ranks switch back.
As for challenges... If challenged, I know that Lord Evermeadow has already declared that the original holder, not the tournament prize winner, who would defend the Ring. However, I would like to see the prize winner as being made the Baron's second and being privy to all the missives and statecraft involved in the challenge.
Further, should a Baron's Council be declared during those two weeks, I would expect... though not be certain... that the prize winners would be the ones involved in the deliberation process and voting.
Lord Evermeadow retains the right to make any ruling upon these matters, as clearly indicated in the "Saving Clause" of the Rules of Engagement.
Thank you for your time.

One last addition...

The winners of the Tourney, for the duration of the two weeks, will be allowed to duel in regulation dueling hours as a Baron... including the duels being counted as peer duels when fought against Warlords.
Of course, I know many a Warlord who has said that Commoners were their bane... would they risk fighting a Commoner who can fight with the rights and skills of a Baron?
Just a thought...

Baron Oakenshield,
May I congratulate you on the Oakenshield Tourney. I am sure that I speak for more then a few of "the lower" ranks when I express my gratitude for your work in organizing the tourney.

Now I would like to address those that would see fit to cast dispersions upon the tourney and its prize. Something that I couldn't help but notice is that each of those that have deemed the prize worthless or the tourney a waste of time are Warlords and unable to participate. If they don't like the prize it is lucky for them that they can't possibly win it and have to shoulder the lack of importance they have placed on the prize.

As for me, I've already sent in my name to be included in the 64 duelers and I hope that I am lucky enough and skilled enough to be one of the finalists. Because I want to wear Jeff's ring? Because I want to show off that I am a Baron for a couple weeks? No. I'm entering to match my skills against the other duelers. I enjoy dueling, I enjoy tournaments even more and stringing together 5 wins in one or two nights is a challenge I am looking forward
to. Now I can understand that some of the older duelists can string together 5 wins in one or two nights easier then they can change their socks, but I ask them to please keep their observations to themselves unless you can step up and offer something better.

Two last thoughts before I close and go search for some asbestos garments.

1) To Mr. Chamberland: Would you like baked potato, fries or rice pilaf with your hat?

2) Good luck to all those that have entered and that will enter but not to much luck if I happen to meet you in the ring.

See you in the rings,
~Dillon Nevada

::sighs slightly, reading up on the post::
In my eyes most everyone is taking this tourney way to literally. This is giving the lower ranked players a chance to see what tournaments are like, to see one of the true beauties of the arena. And to a select two, a chance to feel in strength the respect and responsibility of upholding a baron's ring. This is a chance for them, the higher ranked duelest should see this, and I dont feel that holding onto your peer wins for a few more weeks could
hurt that bad. Also, I would like to see Jeff as a lower ranked duelest, as I suspect others will as well. I mean think about it, he would have to go on one hell of a losing streak to no longer be at least a warlord. I for one am for this tournament, in my eyes it can do nothing but motivate the newer duelest, and help the arena. As well as I see it as a classy act by all of House Oakenshield. Just my opinion.

Lord Oaknshld,
I would like to thank you for this opportunity to test my blade skills with others of my ability. I will duel with honor and respect in this tournament, and again I thank the house of Oaknshld.

I have a question...

Does Avery even realize he holds a ring?

>>And in turn, I would point out:

That would likely be the first "worthless prize" .. since in order to have "another" there must be an initial.<<

Ah yes, I see your point, Kal. Pardon me.

>>How is this any different than the Commoner's Tourney? The winner gets to be Overlord for the week in name only as well.<<

I don't mean to step in for Lord Braggart, but there is a difference Sid. In the snotty commy tourney, they tell you that you hold no power. Alongside that, you share the crown with the current Overlord that holds the position.<<

That's true. Maybe Jeff could clarify on this. I was thinking that it was no different than the Commoner Tourney.

Okay rumor control time...

Here's what I set up with Goldendust. It is no different dan da commoner's tourney prize (except we got 2 of 'em so more people win). Winners get ta wear da ring, see deir name as baron fer 2 weeks (twice as long as the overlord prize) and use up ta 5 fancies restricted ta one more dan deir opponent.

Some of ya wanna call it a worthless prize, fine, but it was da *only* prize I was allowed so I could get an official DoS tournament fer da lower ranks. Its better dan nothin' at all, and in my opinion, its a fine prize in itself. 5 fancies might help someone get a better rank so it could lead ta far greater prizes.

If anyone challenges da 8th or 12th ring, myself or Avery will defend as usual. Challenges *may* challenge while we are swapped in ranks, but we will defend as barons; nothing changes.

Da tourney was set up ta recognize our often under appreciated ranks, have some fun, and award some official prizes. If ya feel its not good enough, don't enter, a lot of people are gonna have fun.

"If I got my hands on that ring in the tournament, and told me that I was a Baron, except that I couldn't defend it, I couldn't align it, I couldn't challenge with it, I could be political with it... basically told me that I couldn't be a Baron, I'd throw it back at your feet and hope that my lips are accurate when I try
to spit on it… then move my aim at you."

Why SHOULD they be allowed to do anything with it? They're lower ranks who won a tournament of lower ranks. If you want to be a "real" Baron with all rights and privileges that title carries, then go about becoming one the "real" way.

As far as alignment goes, let 'em realign it. Jeff is renegade now. If tourney champion Joe wins his ring and petitions for Loyal alignment, let it be granted. Then Jeff can just switch it back to Renegade when he resumes his position of Baron anyway.

This doesn't solve everything, but I don't think it's as big a deal as everyone makes it to me. So what if the prize is "worthless"? Should we be heaping riches on someone for being the best dueler with an average record? I mean, if you want to win the really valuable prizes in the DoS, you have to earn your way to Warlord first. So for a lower rank, I don't see this as being a problem at all-- it's a rather good prize, a chance for
someone to experience dueling as a Baron who might not get, or even want, the chance otherwise. Some people might say this is some of the prevailing anti-lower rank mentality which this tourney was trying to solve, but I don't think so. After all, the real fun is in winning. The prize isn't as important. After all, I think if these people wanted to be a baron badly enough they would be in here night in and night out dueling to improve their rank.
(And hey, perhaps some of them are. I don't know for sure, but I doubt it's that way for many of them.)

I probably should have edited this a bit first. But here it is nevertheless.

If there is such a problem with the rings as a prize, is it unallowed to have the winners have their wins count in the standings? Maybe then they'll be a warlord and actually be able to challenge for a ring they want.

I'm not saying I don't like the prizes given out. I'm just suggesting an alternative if the current idea isn't working out too well.

Var,

No prize is allowed ta alter da standings directly because it is not a tournament officiated solely by RDIs. It just happens ta be da rule, so I came up with da best prizes I could manage with my limitations. At least its official, maybe with 5 fancies dey can pick up a couple of wins....who knows?
