::It was very quiet in Peace's cottage as the big man stood in her doorway fiddling with the hat in his hand and eyeing her nervously. The only sound was that of Joven's dog Jasper licking his foot. He must have caught a thorn in his pads, for he kept biting and sucking at the skin. Then she heard the snapping of the flames in the fire place. The normal
sounds of every day. and for no reason the stupid proverb of Peace's schooldays ran through her mind, "Time and Tide wait for no man." The words repeated themselves over and over again. "Time and Tide wait for no man." These were the only sounds then, the crackling of the fire and Jasper licking his foot on the floor beside her.
When people suffer a great shock, like death, or the loss of a limb, they don't feel it at first. If your hand is taken from you you don't know, for a few minutes, that your hand is gone. You go on feeling the fingers. You stretch and beat them on the air, one by one, and all the time there is nothing there, no hand, no fingers. Peace just stood there rigid like, her hand resting on the doorway, and she was aware of no feeling at all, no pain
and no fear, there was no horror in her heart. She thought of how she must take the thorn out of Jasper's foot and she wondered if the fire needed another log. Peace was shocked at her lack of emotion and this cold absence of distress. Little by little the feeling will come back to me, she told herself, little by little I shall understand. What he had told me and all that has happened will tumble into place like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. They will
fit themselves into a pattern. At the moment she was nothing, she had no heart, and no mind, and no senses, she was just a wooden thing standing in her doorway staring past the man. Then the man begin to speak again in quick jerky sounds::
"Uh...we found there bodies in da woods-we have da lads remains- ifin ya will be a wantin it- their was na much of da women left--::he trails of blinking at her cold silence...he puts his hat back on and placed the small bloody cloak on the floor at her feet:: "Well I best be a goin-::he licks his lips nervously:: again- I'm sorry for your loss-uh-well-good-day::with that he turns and walks away from the cottage hurriedly leaving her there in
the doorway::
::Peace stared watching the man leave. ever so slowly feeling and realization came to her at last and she wished it had not. Her eyes fell to the cloak and a scream ripped out of her and she tottered almost falling and she fell to her knees and pulled the cloak into her arms. her hands shook as she smoothed the fabric::
"Joven! Light help me, Joven!" ::her body curved around the bloody cloak protectively, her sobs the full-throated cries of a women who ahd nothing left to live for:: "Joven, no! No!
::After awhile her cries ceased and she slowly laid the cloak down and stood, tears blurring her vision, but her voice was of ice::
"For what of else the shadow has done there can be no forgiveness, But for Jovens death I will destroy them, I will-
::the wind blew around her and mocked her, whispering in her ears and sudden sweat made tracks down through the blood stains on her face from the cloak. The wind whispered to her reminding her of how she had sent Joven away, And she remembered, a cloudy memory like a dream of a dream, of Jovens pleading eyes, not wanting to be sent away..wanting to stay::
::Her howl beat at the walls, the howl of a women discovering her own soul damned by her own hand, and she clawed at her face as if to tear away the sight of what she had done. She sent him away...she had killed him, he would have lived if she had let him stay. The winds laughter flogged her, drowned out her howls::
::and she began to run...she ran through the forest the wind and rain beating at her. she slips and falls to her knees and mud covers her legs and arms, pushing herself up she keeps going the rain stops to a drizzle and she reaches jumpers cliff. Peace stood at the edge and looked down..she could see the jagged rocks shoot up below her gray and distinct in the white wall of fog. The wind brushes by and caress's her arms and a small voice
whispers to her soft and low..."its easy isn't it? Why don't you jump? it wouldn't hurt, not to break your neck. Its a quick, kind way. Its not like drowning. Why don't you try it? Why don't you go?::
::The fog flowed around her, damp and clammy, it stung her eyes and clung to her nostrils. She held onto the tree with her hands:: "Don't be afraid, "::whispered the soft voice:: "Whats the use of staying here in Rhydin? You're not happy, your son is dead and you have no one. There's not much left to live for, is there? why don't you jump and have done with it? Then you won't be unhappy any more.
::Peace could see the small stream of water flowing over the rocks and the green moss clumped and solid. It was the fog that made them look so far away. They were not far really, the cliff was not so very high::
"Why don't you jump?" ::whispered the small voice:: "Why don't you try?"
::The fog came thicker then before and the rocks were hidden from her. She could not see the moss anymore, nor the jagged rocks. There was nothing but the white mist about her, smelling of seaweed and dank and chill. The only reality was the tree beneath her hands. If she jumped she would not see the rocks rise up to meet her, the fog would hide them from her. The pain would be sharp and sudden as the voice said. The fall would brake her
neck. It would not be slow, like drowning. It would soon be over. And she was alone now...and had no one to care for::
"Go on,"::whispered the voice::"Go on, don't be afraid."
::Peace shut her eyes. She was giddy from staring down from the cliff, and her finger ached from holding onto the tree limb. The mist entered her nostrils and lay upon her lips rank and sour. It was stifling, like a blanket, like an anesthetic. She was beginning to forget about being unhappy, and about the death of Joven. She was beginning to forget about being alone. Soon she would not have to think of it any more.....
As she relaxed her hands and sighed, the white mist and the silence what was part of it was shattered as a stone flew past her face and something shook the tree where she stood. Peace opened her eyes and stared. She stepped back and fled back to her house. Exhausted she slipped out of her wet things she lay on her bed shivering curled up and her eyes shut tight, not wanting to think of anything more...the rhyme running through her mind "Time
and Tide wait for no man" until she fell into a fitful sleep::

::

Midday on Sunday, Caius stopped on the Red dragon inn bar for a drink, and some company. Of course, before he knew it, he was tending as usual. His mismatched eyes were bright and warm as he watched over the patrons, and took care of their needs. The bar, like usual was noisy and crowded, people fighting in the back, fireballs flying left and right, and drunken ladies singing loudly. It was good to be home.

As Caius looked up from wiping down the bar, his eyes met those of Methous. Having always liked the young man, he gave him a smile and a beer and began talking with him. Although interupted constantly, they had a conversation that would startle and worry Caius all night long.

"I came to last night, at home." Methous started. "I had blood all over me, then I heard about Joven."

"Peace's son...? Joven...Blue?"

"Yeah, Joven Blue"

Caius tilted his head a bit and layed down the bar rag, looking Methous in the eyes.

"So, .... what... are you saying?"

"I'm not sure, I dont really remember"

Caius filled Methous's mug again with draft. "Want something a little stronger?"
~"No, I need to think. Here, hold this..."
Methous unstrapped his sword, Angel from his side and handed it to Caius. Then, to Caius's suprise, he walked out the door, saying something about retribution.
Later:

Caius sat in his drawing room, maps hung around him, and dim candle light lit the silver buckles on Angel's scabbard, lain on his table. He stared at it in thought.
"Hmph, looks like old Methous has gotten into more trouble than usual... " He said to himself as he thought how Methous was never a malicious person. Caius put his fingers over the candle, and with a sigh, estiguished it with his fingers.

::Peace slowly opened her eyes at the sound foot steps at her door. Rolling over off the bed she slips a robe on. Her heart felt heavy and lifeless and everything about her seemed distant and faded as though she were sleep walking. Jasper scratched and wined as she walked to the door. Opening the door she saw two men gently carrying something small wrapped in white linen, she recognized one of the men
from the day before and her hand went to her throat as she got paler still. She knew she couldn't deny it now...reality was wrapped in the white cloth...her sons body. Peace clutched her robe around her and leaned heavily against the doorway::
::Seeing Peace in the doorway the men laid the body on the ground and walked to her taking their hats from their heads. Shuffling his feet on the ground and clearing his throat the man she recognized spoke::
"Um..Ma'am here's da lad's body...my misses fixed it up da best she could...::he looks down t the hat in his hands:: and ifen you would be willin me and my friend here can dig ye up a grave fer the poor soul ::he looked up at her sympathy showing though his hard eyes::
::looking away from her sons body at last she looks to the man as if still dazed and nods::
"yes...it is very kind of you...he will need a warm-"::she bites her lip and walks past the two men and kneels beside the body, she brushes her hand across the white Lenin and shivers at the coldness. Stifling a sob she lays her head down on her son and shuts her eyes tight as tears slowly roll down her cheeks and the silence was broken by a single, gasping sob, then another, then the unrestrained flood that poured from Peace's convulsing body::
::The two men slowly walked back to their wagon and grabbed a shovel and a pick and walked a distance from the house, a small clearing surrounded by trees, and they begain to make dreaded thudding sounds of a grave being dug::

::After the grave had been dug Peace wiped her eyes and gathered up her sons body in her arms and walked over and slowly lay him in the grave. Her heart wretched each time the men shoveled in dirt. After the last shovel the men returned to their wagon and drove away after a mumbled thanks from Peace::
::Peace stands over the grave and press's her fingers to her lips and place's it over her heart:: "The light shine on you, and the creator shelter you. The last embrace of mother earth welcome you home...::tears roll down her cheeks::...my sweet baby...
::Her face hardens and she kneels and folds her hands over her heart:: "By the Light and the hope of salvation and rebirth, I sware to find your murderer my son, or may the Creator's face turn from me forever and darkness consume my soul..."

Aspen was out on his monthly sojurn in the forest looking for any new or exciting flowers that could be brought back to Rhydin and sold at his shop. He spots a nice purple flower over by a tree to the south and rides there. He is examining the flower to see if it is posionous and how good it smell, ect. . A wrenching sob ringsout across Rhydin and he
looks quickly up. He says to himself " Make a note, find out what happened and send flowers." He takes out a shovel and digs up a few plants placing them in small buckets and then onto his horse with the special saddle bags. He mounts off and rides off again searching for more flowers.
