The history of a dwarf.

A story for all who would take the time to enjoy it...
Rhydin, what a strange new world to the dwarf, and yet everyone he met seemed to welcome him as if he were an old friend. The first memories of this world were of the star's end bar. He had wandered in off the streets and sat amongst a group of total strangers. A passing bard had gathered a group and was spinning a tale of wonderous adventure, each and every listener was enthralled by the story. The drinks were bountiful and everyone was having
a good time, but this was only the beginning of what would be a new life in Rhydin. Accidently, or perhaps by fate, the dwarf stumbled across a copy of the Duel of Swords standings. Without any knowledge of what he was reading, he concluded this was a sport and its members were publically recognized for their deeds. Immediately the dwarf knew this was for him, but how to enter upon the scene, this was all so new to him. Fortunately enough, one of
the inn's staff was on hand that night, serving drinks and sharing a chat with the patrons. The dwarf meandered over and asked how one makes his way into this mysterious sport. Shortly thereafter he was directed to the basement of the Red Dragon Inn where he emerged into a small crowd of swordsman and spectators alike. This would be where his legacy in Rhydin began, it all would start here.
Looking quite clueless indeed, the dwarf's luck hadn't run out just yet. A kind soul by the name of Rennor Christy helped him obtain his first duel. At the time the dwarf had no idea who this man was, later on he would join the family of Covington which Rennor Christy was apart of, and also understand how grand a dueler he had the pleasure of meeting. The dwarf's first duel was against one of the nicest patrons he would ever meet, even to this
day he could not cite a time this lovely lady did not greet him with a smile or a kind word. The lady's name was Merewyne. It was truely a humorous sight, this duel. While the dwarf had masterful control over his axe, his knowledge of the sport's rules was quite novice indeed. He drove the caller of his first duel; Devon, quite mad in his manuevering. His moves were both confusing and out of order, Devon banged his head many a time against the
nearest table trying to deal with this clueless dwarf. Never the less, Merewyne insisted he take his time and put up with this stocky warrior. The dwarf finished his duel, and even managed a victory, though it would not surprise him if he were to find out it was a gift from Mere.
Over the next few weeks the dwarf had success in this sport. He caught on fast and managed to fit in somewhat, despite his inexperience. His place among his fellows rose swiftly, and soon he found himself a Warlord; without a clue what it meant to be one. Still, it was the standings that impressed the dwarf, seeing his name rise. Ironically, his original intent when first joining the Duel of Swords, was to become the Overlord as fast as
possible. He finally read up on the rules and knew that he would have to first become baron if he sought to see his name alone atop the standings. He knew nothing of the politics, the history, or the prestiege of being a community leader -- all he knew was he wanted to be recognized for his skill. Looking back on everything, the time as a baron would be the greatest in his career. Not because he achieved his first goal, but because becoming a
baron taught him more about the true Duel of Swords than any other experience could.
The dwarf was qualified, his mind was set on becoming one of the elite nine, his duel with Daegarth was set, it was time to learn what it was to be a baron.
((Author's note: Anyone may post in this thread, I am most interested in the differing perspectives regarding encounters with the dwarf, but please do so in a non-disruptive manner))

The dwarf had it set in his mind the smart move was to challenge a renegade. This would cancel out any chance of the Overlord stepping in and forcing him to defeat two duelers rather than just one. So young to this sport, he cared little for the politics, all that mattered was his path to what he considered #1 - being the Overlord. Strategy being a hallmark of the sport, he used it in planning whom he would duel.
Having bested baron Wicked Deth once before, his challenge would be directed at him. However, Wicked Deth was in the process of retiring from DoS, having no desire to serve during Athlstan's reign. Learning his challenge to Wicked Deth was invalid, the dwarf quickly switched it over to Daegarth Mithmellon, the only renegade left. At the time there was no penalty for such dishonorable actions, nor did Daegarth humiliate this relative new warlord
because of his mistake. True valor from a truely skilled baron, Daegarth met this unknown dwarf in the rings and even took care of the formalities. To this day, the dwarf's leniency towards mistakes by first time challengers is because he was shown compassion by Daegarth. Despite the fact Daegarth lost in a sudden death 5-4 duel, he might take solace from the fact that it was he who shaped the new baron in the ways of tradition. How to approach
the challenger, how to arrange the duel, and most importantly how to meet it with honor; Daegarth Mithmellon a true champion of what it is to be a baron of the sword.
Now a baron, an odd occurance arose. The dwarf met current Overlord Athlstan for the first time. Athlstan congratulated the dwarf on his fine victory and offered up what advice he could about being a baron. How could the dwarf seek the title of someone who had taken him under his wing, politically. Athlstan even made mention about how impressed he was that the dwarf rose to baron in just a month; flattery was enough to win the dwarf over. It
came to be that the dwarf would stand as a loyalist, rather than a challenger.
Over the days he would learn what baron entailed, but he was not accepted yet. One duel does not a leader make, so he would be tested. The man to do it was one by the name of Lupton. During this period Lupton would be the dwarf's greatest rival, and later on one of his respected friends. Although at the time Lupton frustrated the dwarf with his persitant challenges, his "pestering" actually gained the dwarf respect. Surviving the gauntlet of
challenges by a respected warlord is one way of proving one's worth in the ring.
But the dwarf was not solely about dueling, surprisingly enough. Having been driven from his homeland, and disconnected from his family, the dwarf sought companionship. His first was a stunningly beautiful lady who went by the name Aiel. This woman was not only attractive but also a fierce warrior in her own right. She never attained the high ranking within the sport of DoS, but it was well known she was not one to be reckoned with. Aiel drew
the dwarf in playing hard to get, showing interest in him but making him come get her. It was not long after though that she opened her emotions to him, soon he was not baron to her; but wings of her heart. This nickname he will never forget, it was how she called to him when love had no words to express her feelings. He set her free and she made him whole, she would stand as his lady of honor in challenges to come with the blessing of his
previous LoH Turienal Firesinger; who would always remain a dear friend. Perhaps it was the good fortune coming back to haunt the dwarf, but bad luck struck one fateful eve. A short hand written note to the dwarf by Aiel explaining how she had to leave the realm. She didn't say why or when she would be back, but the dwarf clung to the fleeting hopes that he would see his Aiel again. Eventually he gave up waiting, seeking the comfort of a mutual
friend of his and Aiel's; Eileowyn. He and Eily would never be more than friends though, a dwarf and an elf, it was not fated for these two.
The dwarf had many friends after just a short time in the arena, but he would know true family when Leto of Covington welcomed him into the Crusaders of Valor...

The dwarf had many friends after just a short time in the arena, but he would know true family when Leto of Covington welcomed him into the Crusaders of Valor...

The Crusaders of Valor, a family of duelers who's lives extended far beyond the basement arena. King Leto took the dwarf in and allowed him to live within his province of Covington. The dwarf never questioned what attracted Leto to him, he was too excited about being apart of the family. Leto, Lyanessa, Karturis, Sondragon, MageMyst, Kingphisch, Tasslehofl, Marius, and Aragorn. This would be the closest group to
his heart for a very long time. He shared in their adventures and in turn shared with them his knowledge of the duels. The dwarf learned that Rennor Christy was the previous instructor at CoV's dueling academy, but Rennor had moved on from the duels, so Leto sought another to teach his family. The dwarf was appointed to this role and placed in charge of building Christy Keep; new home to CoV's dueling classes. This time period was very exciting
for the dwarf, not only was he becoming a deeper part of the Crusaders of Valor, but he was successfully defending his baronial title against an opposing house of CoV. Lupton had come for the dwarf on three occassions, and thrice he had been turned away. A new challenge arose from the great Elijah Basia-Uhr, later known to most as Ecore. This man had amassed countless wins over losses and was to be a role model for the dwarf. Even though the
dwarf was able to best him in the fourth defense of his ring, he knew he wanted to duel enough to surpass the great Elijah in record. It would take many moons for this to occur, but if Elijah hadn't amassed so many wins, the dwarf may have never aspired to a great record. Elijah was the reason WoLs became an important statistic to the dwarf. Still trying to make a name for himself, the dwarf would strive to attain any goal he saw as substantial
among respected duelers. Rings and records, meaningless in the grand scheme of things, were the world to the dwarf at this time and he would die fighting for them.
Although dueling was a priority in his life, the dwarf was still lonely, by sheer coincidence his quest for wins over losses would lead him to his next and last lover; Occurs Summer Rose. Occurs was new to Rhydin during this time, and she sought a teacher for the duels. Having no idea who was who in this sport she merely went on record alone. For whatever reason she passed Elijah over and found herself requesting lessons from the dwarf who was
currently second among duelers. Being a teacher already, the dwarf was keen to taking on a new student, even if it was discouraged to teach those outside of Covington. He loved to teach, to share what he could, but down deep he knew he was going to teach this rose so that he could get closer to her. After a few lessons he made his intentions known to her, and in the months to come he would court her while they shared the duels together. This
would prove to be the best decision he would ever make. This amazing woman would become his wife, mother to his children, and the final piece in the puzzle of his life. No single person made the dwarf happier nor did he depend on any other person more as a reason to wake up each morning with a smile. An odd subplot to this chapter of the dwarf's life that few know; Occurs never went by the name Summer. The dwarf confused her time of birth, the
summer, with her name and addressed her by the season's title. She took a liking to the name Summer and it has stuck with her ever since. It was fate that she would stick with this dwarf through his trials and tribulations within the basement arena.
Leto became Overlord soon after the dwarf met Summer. The dwarf would be his king's greatest champion, defending him on two occassions against members of the opposing faction of this time, House Llewys-Lathadoscia. There was no greater feeling in the duels than winning for a friend, and it pained the dwarf immensely when Leto lost faith in the dwarf's loyalty. The histories never knew what happened between Leto and the dwarf, but in short it was
a questioning of the dwarf's loyalty after he displayed it twice that enraged him. So angered the dwarf left Covington for good. It was this manuever that unintentionally endeared him to some of the members of House L-L, a house he would later join which would cause great friction in his life with Summer.
His life with Summer is most likely the best chapter of the tale, but it will be reserved for the two who shared many a private moment together. Rather, this story will procede on with the career of the dwarf...

After hearing of the dwarf's tale, Avery laid back on the solid earth. So many things, so many times. So many coincidences. Jeff, was more the father that he never had than anything else. Jeff may have never known it, but that was how he saw it. It took a while to get there, and to get anywhere, someone must start from the beginning......
As it happened, the night they met was not with swords. The kid had only been in town for three weeks, and so he had not had the pleasure of dueling all the great duelers so far. Hell, he hadn't the chance to duel all the so-so duelers so far. Yet, there was time. He had risen to Warlord in only two weeks, and upon the ending of the third, had amassed his ten peer wins. This did not go unnoticed by the community, and for sure did not go unnoticed by
one.
The true story starts as I said, not in the arena, but rather in the Outback. It was there that the kid was getting in some fist practice when he first met the Dwarf. There were some there who said that with the rate he was going that he would catch Jeff's record in no time. For the most part Avery could only smile. Yet, they kept saying it. The funny part was that Jeff was there, silent himself as he watched. He was under disguise. Well, in truth he
was calling matches as an official. Avery still had never met this short big man, and so he never had the slightest clue he was there for all this. The night wore on, and the outback came to a close. Those still around meandered over to the Arena, and decided to have some fun in there. That is where the first true meeting happened.
The dwarf approached him that night, with a smile on his face. It wasn't to long until the kid realized who he actually was. Almost embarrassed to say the least about what had just happened, he apologized several times. Yet, Jeff was smooth, and just gave him a smile. Soon enough the fated duel was arranged. A duel that the those around gathered to watch. A duel that almost caused the kid to piss his pants. This was it, this was the best there was.
All he wanted, all he wished, was in this man. For like the Dwarf, when he started it was all about being number one. It was all about getting to Overlord. Perhaps that is the fuel that drives the best. Just to be better. So much of what he read on the dwarfs past could be said for him. Almost every detail of wanting to be the best. It was strange somehow. The duel started, and Avery tried to bite back his nerves, but it didn't matter. Jeff showed
him what was what in that duel. The final came after eight long rounds for him. The score.... 5-2 in favor of who else, but the best. After the duel they had the pleasure of talking some, and that's where the true relationship started. The dwarf healed the kids wounded pride, telling him he had heard great things about him. That he was the latest gun in the arena. Avery's only thought was sure.. beat me in the ring, and then make me feel good
afterwards. That was Jeff, always there.
Most know of the rest. About Avery living at Oakenshield manor, and about the team. About one of the twins being named after him, and the rest. One thing that most don't know though is the respect Avery felt for him. The respect was deep, and he could honestly call Jeff his father. Although he would never do it to his face. Jeff never taught him in a true sense, but he did teach him every day. It was an honor when Avery got the tattoo upon his arm
during the TDL season. A tattoo that only one knows about. Simply it reads Oak on it. It is the only mark upon his body that he truly loves. It will be a forever reminder of who he aspires to be. Number one.

The Baronial histories can well detail the rivalry between me and the Joker Dwarf.

Summer smiled reading the words of their meeting for it underscored what she had always cherished most about her dwarf. In the end she settled for penning a few thoughts in the margin.
Jeff, I done chose ya over Elija because he be rude and arrogant ta me when I asked him for lessons. He called me a man, and said I just was nae good enough for him ta consider. Merely dismissed out of hand for what I be - and that be I was young to ta duels. That be ta rub of L-L later in ya tale I suppose.
But when I came ta ya luv, ya be different. Ya be sweet and did nae laugh when I admitted ta nae knowing all ta traditional moves. Instead, ya made me laugh, and feel important. To ta point luv, ya be ta kindest most gentle loyal one in ta whole of RhyDin. I was in love with ya before I know what ta do with meself.
As for ya naming me Summer. It be me pet name I expect, and I adored hearing it from ya lips. Within a few days everybody be calling me Summer - even ta ones that hae call me Occurs for most me life. When people call me Summer, I think of ya - can almost hear ya voice when ya first called me it, and I be scared ta correct ya because ya be explaining about reversing cuts. Now it be a reminder each time I hear it, it be a reminder of ya love.
And why I call ya me Jeff? Because in ta early days, we nae say much ta others - only a few knew that it be ya I was waiting about for when I came to ta Arena. However, when I just be hanging around, sometimes I would say something about Jeff. Usually people just ignored it, I always be jabbering on, but sometimes someone would say, "She talking about THE Jeff." And I be feeling a bit possessive and I would snap back, "Nae, I talking about ME
Jeff." Now this be good for a chortle, because everyone suddenly want ta know what else ya say, and luv, forgive me but I did hae a bit of fun putting words in ya mouth, things like "Me Jeff say ta best time ta duck be after ya see ta high cut slide by. That way they never expect it." And the respect be so high for ya, they all sit around and discuss it like it be important or something.
This nae complete unless I add this. Ya be ta most loyal person in ta world. I hae never seen ya go down on ya word, or turn ya back on a friend in need - and luv, I hae watched ya for many a year now. If there be any I trust, it be ya, for I know that once ya speak it be so. I love ya.
With that said and done, she set aside her pen. With a swish of her hips she turned and sauntered up the stairs. She was returning to the Manor to write up the chapter missing from this story. But that part was for her loves eyes only.

One of my fondest memmories in my years at DoS is the fast friendship me and Jeff forged when we were both entering CoV. At this time Jeff was the closest friend I had in RhyDyn and there are a multitude of events that I remember with utmost fondness. There is an even greater multitude that I do not remember at all due to the fact that the Dwarf, as I was a great lover of Karturis' home brew.
With the death of Lyanessa and the subsequent splintering of CoV I became disenchanted with the rings and returned to Rome. Rome then reminded me much of DoS now, a time when the people looked back at the mythic greatness of times gone by.
When I returned to RDI, CoV was gone and Jeff was the most accomplished duelist the rings had ever seen. Due in part to my years of absence me and Jeff never fully regained the friendship we had once shared, however he is by far the greatest duelist, and by even farther the greatest friend this Roman has ever known.
Jeff, the rings have never suffered such a loss. I hope you will remain around and we may reminisce on times gone by as well as those to come.
Eternally yours,
Gaius Marius Colestae'

Marius,
I hear this Lyanessa ye speak of is nae dead. Howe'er I heard her memories of certain events 'ave been affected. Some say she is a ghost or a spirit that lingers back to the arena every once in a while and some say she is more than that. Ifin I am correct, I believe her name appeared on a TDL list as once dueling fer Jeffrey Oakenshield. I believe I saw her name meself.
Sincerely,
Marit Takcouma.
