About a challenge..

A poor photocopy rests pinned in the lower, right-hand corner of the cork, creases running parallel to the sides in familiar grid formation, a result of being stashed in a pocket.

-----

To Lucian, present holder of the Second Baronial Ring,

On this day, the Second of August, the nine-hundred and ninety-nineth year of the second millennium A.D., I, Deluthan Ev'rt, do hereby challenge for the right to wear the Second Baronial Ring.
Now, with the purpose of this missive in the spotlight, I wish to transcend formality. I hold no bad blood toward you. In fact, you're quite a mystery to me, and my only personal account of you has been in witnessing the recent Baronial tourney. This does, however, lead to my reason for challenging you, which I will get to in a bit.
There is little left for me in this arena, the one place I found I could enjoy what was once my passion for the sport, for the duels. My skill appears shaken, and my destination not so clear. In challenging you, I have challenged myself to earn my worth, and place. I lack the confidence to predict victory, yet hold sufficient enough pride not to predict defeat. I deserve this ring no more than you do, probably much less. Yes, you were chosen
because you are unfamiliar to me; so that I may have the least possible regret from attempting to take something that you have so respectfully earned.
In consolation, I do wish to give you one hell of a duel, and to those around here who still enjoy watching that type of thing, and I'll leave my future here in Fate's hands.
My peer wins are listed below. The appropriate parties have been notified.
This, Baron Lucian, is my challenge to you.

11. Deluthan defeats Jarfglohn, 7-5.5 in 13 rounds. Altara, 7/24/99. (Jarfglohn, RDI Poison)

Why is it someone says they want a challenge to their skill, so they base their decision on whoever finished last in a recent Tournament?

No offense Lucian, in fact, may Victory kiss your blade. Please insert longsword in Deluthan.

Until you comprehend my reasons behind this challenge, Cassius, I suggest sticking that silver spoon back in your mouth.

Silver spoon? What is that supposed to imply? Not even sure I wanna know....

Anyways, insofar as not comprehending your reasons for Challenge, why not? I'll give you this, you were pretty clear with them. And yes, there is no where that you specifically claim your challenge to Lucian is based on his performance in the Baronial Tournament, at least not overtly. But in your own words, you're challenging to prove your worth and place here. Also, in your words..."I hold no bad blood toward
you. In fact, you're quite a mystery to me, and my only personal account of you has been in witnessing the recent Baronial tourney. This does, however, lead to my reason for challenging you, which I will get to in a bit."

Now, I have been wrong before, and rest assured that sometime in my life I will be wrong once again, and I could very well be wrong here. I'm not you Deluthan, I don't know what you're thinking. But even so, can you really blame me for thinking as I do, given the above qoute?

The commoner pauses before the cork, slender raven brow arching slightly, a slow shake of her head. She sets quill to parchment, then tacks the missive to the cork.

Deluthan Ev'rt

Perchance thee hold that garnering a Ring shall grant thee somehow worth and a place? If thou art so insecure in thine own worth ta feel that bearing a ring shall grant either unto thee, thou hast mine sincerest pity, sirrah. For truly, win or lose, thou shalt nae find thine worth increased nor thine place set securely. Such canst only be found within thee and nae within the circle of a Ring upon thine hand.

Can I blame you for thinking like you do, Cassius? No. Can I blame you for posting your thoughts, thoughts that you yourself are unsure of as correct, for the entire community to see, one that I'm guessing listens to your words much more closely and to heart than they do mine? Yes.

Whoa there. I never said I was unsure of them. I just said it was possible I may be wrong.
To be unsure would be in this particular instance to have, in my opinion, doubts that it is true. And I do not. In my opinion, my statement was true. Whether or not my opinion is correct is unknown. As for posting my thoughts to the Community, that's what this here cork is for guy.

Roman,

How quickly you have chosen to condescend me with a bland nickname. Well, let me get this straight: you have no doubt that what you say is true, yet you think it's possible you could be wrong? Excuse me for thinking you were unsure.

Everyone fosters thoughts within them. Everyone. However, I find there is a lot to learn from those who choose not to post them.

::A sigh of wearing patience escapes the Roman as he approaches the cork, a papyrus harshly nailed to the board:::

Deluthan Ev'rt.

First, the nickname thing. I called you "guy" as an alternative to your name, it was not a nickname meant to be specifically pinned on you. I would call many a person that, not just you. So, you decide to refer to me by the name of my nationality, right before making that comment about the nickname. Kinda funny huh? And whether I'm sure or unsure...it's my opinion and I got a right to put it on this cork, whether you like reading it or not. And
while we're on that subject, it sort of bothers me that you take offense to criticism, Ev'rt. Wanna know why? Cause you are challenging for a Ring. If you cannot accept criticism of yourself,
and yes, that is criticism in public as well, then you are in for a seriously rude awakening should you win your Challenge. Barons are under constant scrutiny. If a Baron relieves himself behind a tree, it makes official news. K? If you are not ready for criticism, you are not ready to be a Baron

"Um...I don't think so. I did it numerous times and nobody said anything to me."

Nothing was said to you, but the pictures taken still make a great cover for the "National Idiots Weekly" magazine.

That joke aside, I am sure this will be a good duel between Del and Luc. I see both with a respectful eye.

And to just add in two cents with what Cas said, you really should be careful when you challenge. You will face criticism one way or another during one's tenure as a baron; and usually criticism happens with challenges.
That's all it boils down to: When you stand atop so many people, just a little shake from under can make you topple over if you're not ready. Is this directed to anyone in particular? No, it's just an added thought by me along with Cassius' words.

I see nothing wrong with Del's challenge really...

And I don't mind who wins.

Someone win, but preferably, Del. There's reasons behind that to pad it as well.

Oh, and Cas... Take a breather, will ya? I'm gonna make you supper for Garrick, you know? My body guard. . .
