Formal Notice of Challenge
From: valmion@aol.com (Valmion)
Date: 05 Aug 1999 16:32:43 EDT
Baron Rix Favre,
With this missive I do lay challenge to your right to wear the 5th Baronial Ring of the Duel of Swords. Though we have been friends for many years, an event most recent has bothered me enough that I feel the need to issue this challenge. I am sure you are well aware of the event of which I speak. Below I list my peer wins that await validation.
My second for this challenge shall be the most honorable, former Overlord, Unagi Miyamoto. My Lady of Honor shall be the Lady Banda.
Win or lose, this match shall ease the troubled heart I carry Baron. Should fate decree you to defend your ring, then I shall feel that the action you took against an Honorable Overlord to have been justified under the eyes of God. Should I come out the victor, then I shall feel that justice has been served for a wrong committed against an honorable man.
Sincerely,
Valmion of Questrion

I wish you luck on your attempt, Valmion. As a matter of fact, I wish you the best.
Rix,
I see you as a very highly capable duelist and a good man at heart.
I don't mind who wins, but more so I'd wish to see Valmion. Duel well you two.

Rixy,
You committed no wrong. I know you probably won't listen to what others have to say about you, but don't let anyone sew a seed of doubt in your mind. You did well. Now do it again. Win.
Val,
I've known you for years, but you'll understand if I pull for the man that kept an honorable man from hiding behind another dueler - something I'll never believe in, no matter the challenger.
Sincerely,
Nova Grey Shadow

Hm. Isn't there something in the rules about losing your peer wins if you've been reinstated, perhaps? Thought there was...

I'm there, Rix. Stab him repeatedly and let me keep the body for display in the Tavern.

I don't think Valmion ever retired or was removed from the standings, Xerzes. If he was, then the peer wins are invalid.
In either case, this will be an exciting matchup between the two veterans.

For those who are seeking more information.
The Warlord Valmion was removed from the Standings for inactivity... however, as I clearly stated in letters to all inactive duelers and upon this very board, should any of them duel within the first week of the new cycle, they would be placed back upon the Standings with no reduction in rank or loss of previously gathered peer wins.
I received clearance for this from the Supervisor, and subsiquently made note of many duelers who returned to maintain their records and standing.
Warlord Valmion came to me long before this date to confirm that his wins were valid, and I find the questioning of so august a personage to be a true sign of the willingness of so many in the Realm to seek any means to tear down those around them.
The Wins are valid as given, the challenge is ratified and passed along to the Baron for him to arrange the particulars.

Madame Silvertree
T'was indeed thou didst remove th' warlord from th' standings, in error, I might add. Much ast thou removed th' warlord MidnytBlue from th' lists for in 'e hae dueled within th' parameters set forth in th' rules 'o engagement. Th' warlord, Valmion, nae e'er retired, nor should his name hae been removed from th' lists. T'was another 'o thine 'errors', though seems ta be thee hae perhaps fergotten th' instance or mislaid th' paperwork, th' or th'
officials wh' should hae sent in th' notes failed ta do so in a timely manner.

Drake,
I, personally, do not remember the announcement upon the boards, and it is apparent Xerzes doesn't remember either. I respect Valmion and would not try to "bring him down" unless he has truly done something wrong. Mistakes can be made, and if mistakes are made, then they must be rectified.
Even Ecore, one whom has dueled as long, if not longer, than Valmion, sent his peer wins in early. Whether or not it was a mistake, it had to be corrected.
I truly hope you find nothing wrong with people seeking to preserve the integrity of the arena. I just wanted to make sure that the peer wins were valid since something was mentioned about them not being valid.
As a matter of fact, Xerzes, do you even know Val or Rix? If no, then I would just have to wonder why you would want to allegedly try to "bring Val down."

Lady Starfare.
Once again, you are mistaken... and once again I find I have to correct you.
There is -no- indication anywhere that a Warlord's record is vouchsafed any protection from removal due to inactivity, save at the discression of the Standing's Keeper.
Once again, I quote you the exact passage. "Warlords who retire or "are inactive for more than one cycle" MAY be removed from the Standings and their records archived at the discretion of the Standings Keeper."
Master Evermeadow had, on a number of previous occasions, removed Warlords for inactivity... seek him out if you do not believe me.
I, unlike many others, am lenient in this matter in that I allow for a Warlord to keep both record and peer wins intact should they duel within the first week of the new cycle. In every other case, the wins gathered by said Warlord are forfeited as is stated in the following passage. "Returning Warlords, for Baronal and Overlord challenge purposes, are treated as New Warlords and start out with zero "Peer
Wins"."
So far, both Warords you mentioned found little to complain about, once I explained both the rules and my leniency in regards to said rules. In point of fact, the Lord of Questrion and others of that noble house offered me thanks for my willingness to allow such, and Lady Blue thanked me for my understanding of the circumstances surrounding her own long absence from the Rings.
In addition, though I cannot confirm it, I believe I am the first Standings Keeper ever to send missives out letting a duelist know well before hand when they might be removed from the Standings for inactivity. I also believe I am the first Standings Keeper to keep records of all duelists who are removed for inactivity, thus allowing for those of lower ranks to be reinstated upon request.
As Standing's Keeper, I serve both the letter and the spirit of the Rules of the Duel of Swords. Every reasonable request, complaint or error made has been addressed in a timely manner by myself, to the satisfaction of all parties involved. You, Lady Starfare, stand alone in your constant accusations.
I say to you this again... if you believe you can do a better job, come and do it.
Lady Drake, aka the Gryphon.

Oy.
I think I've met Val and Rix once or twice each, mostly while calling for TDL. I don't know them. I don't even know that much about them. I was not trying to "bring anyone down." I was simply pointing something out that didn't look correct to me.
