A newcomer

She strolled into the hall decorated with banners.

"NEWBIE!" cried a drunk, as his eyes took upon her in swaggered passing.

Book-ladened, she ignored the verbal words of description hurled at her, only giving a small shake of her head. Her instructor had forewarned her about some of the participants she might encounter. She knew that her books could serve as shields if she needed them. Her voyage here to the land of Rhydin had taught the lesson of defense.

Now, she stood with curiosity and wonder set in sapphired eyes, studying the place of swords which brandied many a tale.

Fourteen more cycles would pass before she would be delivered the rapier and become a participant of the sport herself.

The hall was dimly illuminated by a soft kaleidoscopic haze from the windows. Beyond doors, just a few steps ahead, she knew it to be the entrance to the arena. She would make exploration of it, but not just yet.
She took to a bench nearby. First, she placed her books down, then beside them she sat, her hands falling to her lap. She glanced up toward the banners once again. One by one, she studied each, including the staffs upon which they were attached.
Her instructor came to mind. She remembered him calling her into his study. She could still see the sagging wooden bookshelves filled with tall leather volumes in his den. He wanted to show her banners of the Duel of arena. She smiled inwardly, as some of the banners she was now looking at matched the ones he had shown her in the book.
Then her smile escaped as she remembered further his description.
"The spirit of the arena is lost, Sapphirra. Tis not the same place anymore."

The hall doors opened and Sapphira's Irish eyes went to two males adorned in elegant cream-colored robes. A wisp of cool air rushed in behind them, startling her enough to bundle further into the warmth of her cloak.
One of the men acknowledged her presence with a mere nod and slight smile, while the other man's face stayed hidden behind the brim of his hat. The pair meandered pass her and proceeded to the arena beyond, leaving her to the quiet again.
The sudden silence combined with the chilly air propelled her back toward thoughts and a missing sense of what the arena must have been like in it's spirited age. Leaving her books where they were on the bench, she rose and strolled to a window. There, she gazed out the window, heavily engaged with thought, and thinking aloud she questioned, "What was the arena like in the old days?"
She wanted to understand that spirit she witnessed lingering behind her instructor's eyes and more so, she had a deep urge to know why his looks acquired such sadness.

The small imp tiptoed toward the books that lay on the bench. Slowly, he reached as the Irish lass stared out the window. Slowly.....slowly.....slowly. He picked the book up and smiled mischieviously. In all his excitement at the success of obtaining the book, his silvery wings flapped behind him. Maybe a little too loud, for he dipped his head down in a guilty submission, positive that he had been caught in the act. Slowly, he raised his head back up expecting what he always expected; a scolding for sure. But, he was surprised to discover that she was so enthralled in her own thoughts, she had not heard the noise. Instead, she only continued to stare out the window asking but the silly question, "What was the arena like in the old days?" He eyed the door, the book tucked under his wings.

Sapphira's stare out the window founded her a shooting star. She realized, then, that the sun had set and she had been here for quite a while. She decided to step out from meditational thinking, gather up her books, and introduce herself to the arena. She turned around. A tiny imp was tiptoeing toward the door and this came to her as quite an amusement. The sight was so amusing, she couldn't help but bowl over in laughter. The Imp froze in his step. The book dropped down on the floor and with it her laughter. She stared long and hard with a mild shock down at her book beside his feet, till finally, he reached down and picked it up. He placed his hand on the knob of the door. She could not believe the little creature had such guts. "I would advise ye to bring that back to me this instant." Her voice was firm, but quiet. He danced himself about to face her and held up the book. "This?" he asked feigning an innocent expression. "Drootin Drats, mi lady, I am doing a courier's duty today and I was told to come here and retreive this......" He brought the book before his eyes, "book and it's exactly the one described. Could it be I picked up the wrong one?" "It most certainly is the wrong one, but I think you knew that." She felt color rise up into her face.
