Challenge for the 13th....

Post by DoS Archive » Sat Oct 09, 2004 9:47 am

I, Warlord Gaius Marius Colestae' do hereby challenge Baron Magnus Eques, for the right to wear the 13th ring. There is no malice or politics behind this challenge I just wish to test my prowess against the man who has all but monopolized the 13th since its institution into the DoS. I think it is time for the torch to be passed and am perfectly willing to accept it if thats what lies in store. I have been "come and go" within RDI for a good 3 years
and believe the ring will if not satisfy my Roman avarice, then at least quell my wanderlust. Regardless, it should be a fun little scuffle thus I anxiously await your reply.

----Details:

Blade: "Standard", my reliable if unimpressive gladius.
Second: Centurion Cassius Gaius Maximius.
Cause: The Glory of Imperial Rome (Requiescat in pace); and so I can go around saying "Marius ego sum Dominum cognoscite vestrum" without seeming undeservedly precocious.

Peer Wins:

R Lupton Vanssa 3/13/99 2:30 AM*
SHIV BLADE Skall 3/14/99 10:54 PM
MFaxfallen Vanssa 3/15/99 1:35 AM
Secondat Gryph 3/17/99 10:55 PM
Strallen Gryph 3/17/99 11:55 PM
Methous45 Stormi 3/24/99 11:05 PM
SaraElijah Stormi 3/26/99 12:55 AM
Daegarth Morn 3/26/99 2:00 AM
Jakvaltrds Marit 8/14/99 2:17 AM
Cas Maxim Reiver 8/15/99 1:50 AM

*The first 8 are a little aged but I dont believe that is a problem.

Warlord...

I regret to inform you that your challenge is invalid. Two of your Peer Wins have not been posted yet, and the remaining eight are not enough for a valid challenge.
In accordance with the Rules of Challenge, your previously valid Peer Wins are void, and you may not challenge again for the rest of the Cycle.

I hope this will not discourage you over-much in your pursuit of your future goals.

On passing the cork, Del reads of the ill-fated challenge mumbling to himself. "Battle of the Magnus's. Could've proved interestin'. A shame..."

I don't know why it should be void when it was only a mistake. Regardless, I would have rooted for Magnus Eques.

Don't be discouraged, Marius... Now that you know the deal, better luck next time.

>>I don't know why it should be void when it was only a mistake.<<

Only one reason Drey.
Those are the rules.
In my opinion, it isn't a bad rule. It encourages people to make sure that they get all their details accurate and current before they make their challenge.

Well then, why should Elijahs' ill fated match have been handled as such? It was only a mistake.

A mistake that has been hotly debated over countless times upon these boards. Oh, did I forget to mention that it was a blatant disregard of the rules?

Why stop there? Why bother waiting to even achieve all ten peer wins? After all, given time I am positive that this fine gentleman, that has obviously either, 1- not taken the time to read the rules or 2- has thouroughly forgotten them, could in fact gather up that many, why wait?

It is only a matter of a few days after all, surely we can forgive and forget that easier than a few hours difference.

Wait, how about if we petition to Drake to allow this invalid challenger to be allowed to slide, wait another few days and re-challenge when the standings have been posted?

Let me start. Sooth, you go ahead and continue.

Sardonically yours,
Ellisa Morgan

You are obviously mistaken, Ellisa.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Elijah's challenge seen only as a mistake and let him wait until the standings were out.

Though Percival is right and yourself, they should have known. I tend to be... This isn't the right word, but sympathetic.

Well, I waited until the the standings were up before I challenged, and I had to wait a whole extra week too because my tenth peer win was left off the first posted standings it should have been on. So if I can do it, you guys can do it. :)

Just passing through,
Sara E.

Personally, as I've said it before, but I still think the rules are a bit lax. If someone is informed quick enough by someone else that their challenge would be invalid, then they can rescind the challenge.
Personally, I don't think they should be allowed to even do that. When they know that the challenge will either be "do or die" then they'll put in a lot more thought in the future.
Now while I apologize for straying off topic for a moment, I want to admit to Drake that I am pleased to see the rules enforced, and that she dealt with it swiftly. Moreover, I would like to wish Marius luck in his future endeavors, and I commend him for being a good sport despite the news of invalid challenge.
Now if only things could be handled that swiftly and easily for the baron's council. Ah well, sometimes it just seems hard to look at every situation in those cases, and try to determine the fair course of action. It's one of the responsibilities as a baron, though, and I hold no regrets for ever accepting the job.

You obviously either do not know of the literary tool of sarcasm or in the dark about the entire point of rules, please no one need know which you are suffering from.

Again, sardonically yours,

::Rides bye from the package store and notices the response to his ill fated challenge::

:Jots down:

Whatever my initial displeasure on hearing of my challenge's invalidity, I am thankful that my mistake did not make me subject to the spirit of ridicule which seems to have become so prevalent in the postings as of late. As far as being discouraged from future challenges is concerned, I am sure that this event will be seen (by future Marius scholars) as little more than a cowpie along the road to greatness.

"Nihli illegitmi carborundum" right? ::Grin::
