It had been a normal Thursday night in the arena. Daemon had the closing duties and all the patrons where filtering out into the night. "You don't have to go home," he shouted. "But you can't stay here." With a soft laugh, the last of the diehards bid him good night. He locked the door behind them then went to check the lock on the delivery entrance. When he returned, he noticed a small boy sitting in one of the back corners.
Daemon didn't trust his eyes at first. The lad did not move, even as Daemon approached him. He sat in a chair, with his legs up and his arms wrapped around his knees. The boy was covered in filth, and sporting a black eye. His skin was fair and his hair was red. "Why hello there," Daemon said, but the child did not respond. Thinking the child might be deaf, Daemon moved so he was kneeling in front of the lad.
The boy's gaze shifted ever so slightly. He didn't turn his head, he didn't blink he just stared off to some distance place. Daemon was familiar with the stare. As onetime sailor on ‘Satan's Flagship', he had heard it called the thousand mile stare. It was the look of a man who has witnessed something so horrible that although his body continues to function, his mind is in another, safer place.
"What's your name son?" Daemon didn't expect a response and didn't receive one. "That's quite a shiner you got there," he said noting quite a few other bruises on the lad. Feeling sorry for the boy Daemon walked into the kitchen and got out some left overs and heated them up in a pot. He brought out two plates and two sets of flatware. Placing one in front of the child, Daemon took a seat across from him.
"You don't talk much do you," he asked, and still received no response. "Well I will have to call you something. I mean I can't call you boy and lad all night." If the child even heard Daemon, he gave no indication. "I think I'll call you Pete. Yes, Petey I like it. Petey, you haven't touched your food, it will get cold."
Daemon finished off his plate, but left Pete's in front of the child. He took his dishes into the kitchen and rinsed them off, leaving them for the Staff in training to clean in the morning. When he returned, Pete was sitting exactly like Daemon left him, but his plate was empty. Locking the liqueur up, Daemon said "It's ok Petey, you don't have to be embarrassed. You are safe here. No one is gonna hurt you, in fact, if you relax for a while, Gondar's Ward might even heal that eye of yours."
Daemon opened up the staff locker room, securing it with a chair. "I can't stay here all night Petey. There is a bath inside this room, and I suppose you can sleep on the caller's couch. I will leave a few of the wall lanterns lite for you, ok." Motionless, Pete just sat there. Daemon walked over to the table and reached into his boot, pulling out a long fighting dagger. He set in on the table without a word and picked up the plate.
From the kitchen, Daemon rinsed the plate then yelled back into the arena,"Good Night Petey. I will see you tomorrow." With that he blew out the kitchen light and Re-closed the alleyway door. For a few minutes, Daemon sat there in the dark listening for sounds from the arena. Nothing. Moving quietly, though by now he was convinced the child was deaf and mute, he peeked back into the main arena.
There in the center ring, stood Pete. He had the dagger in both hands and his back towards the kitchen. For a few minutes, Daemon watched the child. Pete's body was in the ring but Daemon was sure his mind was in another place all together. The boy was reliving something or fighting some unseen danger. Daemon relaxed and allowed his warrior senses to control him. The child was safe, no danger was lurking in unseen corners.

Friday came and went without any sign of the child. Daemon began to worry about the lad. He asked some of the staff in training if they had seen him that morning. When they told him they had not he asked about a fighting knife on one of the back tables. "So, there was no boy, no knife, and no mess in the locker room.?" Each one responded the same, "nope."
Daemon began to question if he had in fact imagined it all. It was possible that it was a vision brought about by his all to often state of hunger and lack of sleep. He wondered about the dagger, emptying out his locker and checking his other boots. No daggers hidden in his other boots. Maybe he simply lost it, maybe. Periodically through the night Daemon found himself looking towards the doors. He was hoping the lad would return, that Daemon would actually see the boy walk, not just appear in one
place or another.
After a duel in the annex, he came back up stairs. Sitting near ringside was little Pete. The boy's knees where up and his arms wrapped around them. Daemon could see the hilt of his dagger sticking out from the child's right boot, the same boot that he used to wear it in. Asking around, Daemon could find no one who saw the waif enter the arena. A few patrons didn't even see the lad until Daemon pointed directly at him and something moved between the child and the other side of the arena to provide a
contrast change.
The child seemed to blend in to the background. Daemon had once heard one of his coworkers discussing what they called "a grey man." The child seemed to fit the description somewhat. Daemon sat with Pete and watched his wife duel in one of Luthien's rings. After some harsh words from a few patrons, the elfin queen took her duelers into the annex. That's when it happened. For a split second, Pete regarded Luthy as she left. The moment passed and he was again lost to the world.
When Khrysta returned from her duel, Luthien did not reenter the arena. Daemon called his wife over to discuss the child. She asked about his duel and he told her that he had fun and so did little Petey.
"Who is this Petey?" she asked.
"The little homeless boy over there," he said pointing. He doesn't talk, we had fun for Pete's sake, he is always so sad."
Turning to look for the child, she repeated, "Homeless?"
"Yes, a street urchin. The other night, I let him use the locker room and fed him. But, he never smiles, or talks."
"That's no life for a child... he needs a home and people to love him."
"He has that 1000 mile stare love."
"That what?"
Daemon moves in front of Pete, sighing as his eyes shift ever so slightly. "Stand in his line of sight and watch" Khrysta moves in front of the boy. "See,"Daemon says."You can barely notice his vision shift." Looking up to Daemon, she says. "He doesn't even seem to see me."
"That's what I mean, he is always looking past or through people. I think something bad happened to him. He seems to be tied to the Inn somehow."
Khrysta kneels down in front of Pete and holds out some grapes for him. Daemon sighs as the boy doesn't see them. Very quietly to Pete, Khrys speaks "Hey there honey."
"Love, I have never seen him eat, but if you leave them, he will eat them." She sets the grapes and the rest of the bag of candy on a table next to him. If Pete saw them he didn't acknowledge it. Daemon walks over and unlocks the Locker room, propping the door open to air it out. Khrysta sits back on her heels, eyes never leaving the boy. "How long has he been here like this?"
"Love, you are staring."
"No... I'm trying to *see* him"
"I don't know for sure. I had only seen him this Thursday, but it is possible that it has been many weeks that he's been around."
"But.... it's almost as if he's not there... or behind a wall." Khrysta can't bare to look any longer.
"He is not helpless, he has one of my long daggers. I saw him in the rings with it"
Khrysta turns quickly to Daemon. "How did he get that?"

"I left it out. I think someone dear to him Died here in the Arena or the Inn. I am not even sure of his real name I just call him Pete."
Reaching a hand towards the child, she asks, "Will he let anyone touch him?"
"I have, he is clammy and unresponsive. When I first met him, he looked like a wet dog, and he had one black eye, that is when I *gave* him my knife. When he sits there with his knees up on the chair, and his arms around them, I swear this whole place could come down and he wouldn't budge."
"Would he come home with us, do you think?"
"I am afraid to take him away from here, he is tied to this place somehow like I said"
"Mayhaps you're right... but a child needs..... people to love him." She wonders what has caused such grief in one so young.
"I think that is true. . .But."
"But what Daemon?" Khrysta turns to look at the little boy again.
"Love, if he is tied to this place, how would he react in our home? You are staring again."
"Daemon, this isn't good for him. I can't be good for him."
As Daemon walks away from Pete, Khrysta turns her gaze to him. She follows him to the bar where he stops suddenly. He quickly moves back to Pete. Khrysta gets some water and sits back on the stool. She watches as Daemon kneels down before the boy.
"Pete," Daemon says. "Pete, I NEED you to hear me." He takes the boys head in his hands and looks into Pete's eyes. "Damn it Pete, look AT me!! Love, he won't look at me." Khrysta sighs and looks away again.
"Grab the candy, and the grapes love," he says picking up Pete. Daemon sighs as Pete goes limp in his arms.
Khrysta raises her brow in question. "We're taking him home then?" she asks, moving to take the things from the table. Daemon doesn't answer her and simply walks out with the lad. Khrysta eyes sparkle with tears as she follows Dae and the young boy.
"Daemon.... I thought you said we shouldn't take him home with us?" Khrysta is forced to lengthen her strides to try and keep up with his longer ones.
"We have to."
Khrysta's eyes are glistening. "Then you know also that it's not good for him to live in the arena?"
"Aye love we need to keep him away from there."
Khrysta catches up to him and places an hand on his arm to stop him for a moment "Why love...?"
"He looked AT something tonight love." He barely stops before continuing on, his strides lengthening as they reach the path to their cottage.
"When? I didn't notice it. at what?"
"Earlier, he looked at Luthien. He watched her leave."
"Now, why would he watch Luthien?" She glances at the still form of the child cradled in her loves arms.
"Do you remember what I said? He is tied to the arena."
"Yes. But what has that to do with Luthien?"
"The boy is too old to be Prudence's child but not her brother. I think he doesn't understand what happened between them." Reaching the cottage he opens the door and sets the boy down in a chair, his knees up and his arms wrap around them again.
"Prudence? Who is Prudence love?" Khrysta asks.
I forgot, you where not here then." Daemon takes time to briefly explain the ward of Gondar and the price that was paid to keep it. He tells her of a death match between the Impish lass and the elfin queen.
"And you think that *Pete* may be her... brother? Love.... you think he was there? That he saw Luth..::lowers her voice to a whisper:: kill her?"
"I think he knows he can't duel her, he may not understand, Prudence and Luth where close. They knew what needed to be done and I honor them for doing it
Khrysta brushes a lock of hair from the boys face. "That's a terrible thing to have to go through. We have a problem Hon.... only one bedroom, and only one bed.."
"I know love." Daemon grabs the Scimitar of Knowledge off the wall. Khrysta crosses to the chest at the foot of the bed takes out spare linens to make a bed on the settee in the front room "Where are you going?" she asks

Daemon sighs as Pete is sitting in a chair, knees up, arms around them. "I think he sleeps like that love. I am going down by the stream, I need a Lesson." He discards his broken yo-yo and walks out into the night.
"Dae... that's crazy.... he can't sleep sitting up like that"
"I need confirmation, I need to know Pete's real name. I can only hope this works."
Khrysta kisses him as he leaves. " I'll leave a candle lit for you Love." then under her breath so he can't hear, "although I don't know why, you never come home afore dawn." She finishes making the settee up as a temporary bed and moves the child under the soft comforter. As he lays motionless staring at the ceiling or some other place in time, she waits for her Love to come home.
Daemon walks down to the stream that runs behind his little cottage. A full moon is shining over head. His trip to the Land of the rising sun is fast approaching and he needs to leave Khrysta with a better idea of who the child is that she might help Petey to live like a normal boy again. He takes out the Scimitar, pausing to read the inscription on the belt's buckle. ‘A little knowledge can be dangerous.' He speaks a single word into the night air. "Prudence."

An ethereal figure appears before him, bathed in a golden light, and a lilting brogue tickles his ear musically. "What call hae ye tae be pullin' me from me slumber, laddie-buck?" A mischevious twinkle can be seen within her eyes
"A boy, around 7 in the arena, he is lost to this world. I feel he is tied to the Arena somehow"
"A boy, ye say? Is he fair o'face an' a redheaded mop?"
"If i could ever get all the dirt off him he might be yes. My wife and I have taken him home. He looks past me no matter where I move. As I picked him up to take him home, he did not protest, he went limp."
The apparition before him narrows her eyes and tosses her auburn tresses "God's Teeth! Could he be me little brother, Brian, left tae rot in the streets?"
"I have been calling him Pete due to the Shiner he had the first day I saw him. I saw him in the ring once after closing. He was lost, and didn't see me."
A smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. "He allus were a scrapper, were Brian..... Ye cannae allow him tae stay in the gutter, Daemon. I hear ye are a right good fellow, and ye maun let harm come tae him"
"I won't but Tonight, just tonight I saw him Look AT something." Daemon says. "Aye,,,an' wha' was tha'?"
"Luthien." The word hangs in the air like the stench of death.
"The elven Queen?" Prudence's ghost starts visibly.
"I am taking him away from the Arena. Yes, the same."
A sadness drops over her face like a curtain."
"I didn't put it together till a little while ago. When Luth walked out, he drifted off again."
"Dae, ye must care fer him....please dinnae let him fergit his only kin."
"Aye Prudence, I will."
"If'n he be Brian O'Shaunessy, let him remember his lovin' sister wi' pride an' joy......an' raise him in the rings?"
"Raise him in the rings???"
"Twas fer his right tae duel, did I leave him.......aye, though i'd thought me ma would be with him allus."
"But what of the apparent obsession with Luthien?"
"He must come tae terms wi' it, ye must tell him I loved her like a mither."
"He was sitting at my ringside, Knees up and arms wrapped about them when she left. For a split second, he watched her leave. He has never seen anything that i could tell before tonight."
With her heart wrenching, she begins to fade. "She must look upon him, an' teach him, along wi' ye an' yer lovely wife....ye must make him understand tha' twas nae her fault."
"I am not even sure he hears me but I will try. I promise you that, on my HONOR."
The painful entreaty within her eyes says much more than mere words as she fades to a pinprick of golden light, and disappears altogether. "Ye must do it, laddie....I charge ye wi' it............"

Coming out of the trance, Daemon sheathes the Scimitar. "I will do my best Prudence, I will indeed." It seemed like only moments ago he had left the cottage. The moon no longer hung overhead and dawn would be here soon. With a crack of this back, he rose and stretched his hands toward the sky. He went inside and sat on the settee at Pete/Brian's feet. Sleep came quickly for the albino who had yet to remove his dueling attire or cloak.
A few hours later, Khrysta awoke him. She was trying to remove his boots without waking him. Pete/Brian sat at the table in a hard backed chair. As was normal, his knees were raised and his arms were wrapped around them. Daemon stopped Khrysta, and took of his boots and cloak, rising to hang his cloak. As Khrysta moved into the kitchen to cook some eggs, Daemon spoke to Petey over his shoulder.
"How did you sleep Brian O'Shaunessy?" He asked.
The lad jerked in recognition of the name, then lapsed even deeper into where ever he was hiding. Daemon changed into his house robe and moved over to the boy. From the kitchen Khrysta spoke.
"What did you call him love?"
"I called him Brian O'Shaunessy, that is his name." Daemon moved over to kneel infront of the lad again. "Brian, can you hear me? I spoke with your sister last night." Again the twitch as he spoke. "You can hear me can't you. I know you're in there Brian. Your sister loves you very much Brian. She has charged me with taking care of you."
Khrysta moved to the table. She was curious to learn what Daemon had found out last night. She carried a plate with some fried eggs and toasted bread. She set it down infront of Brian, hoping he would eat. Daemon told her to talk with Brian. He said she should use his name often to help him remember who he is. Then Daemon went off to find a quill and some parchment.
He quickly penned a letter to Luthien and then went out the front door. Their nearest neighbor's youngest son Jacob was in the next field over. Daemon hollard, and Jacob walked his horse over.
"Jacob, I have a very importat mission for you," he said. "It must be handled quickly and by someone I can trust." Daemon played on the boy's love for mystery and desire for adventure. "Know you the elfin queen Luthien?"
"Yessir, mister Daemon sir."
"Good, do you know where she resides?" Jacob nodded and Daemon continued. Handing him the sealed parchment, "this is for Luthien's eyes only. It leaves your hands only to enter hers, do you understand?" Again, Jacob nodded. "This is extermely important. I need her to see this before mid day. Can you handle this Jacob?"
"Yessir, mister Dameon sir." With that Jacob was off at a full canter. Daemon stood there till Jacob was out of sight and retrieved a buck from the well and went inside. He began to fill the tub, telling Khrysta what he had done. He bathed while Khrysta tried in vain to feed Brian. When she gave up, she folded up the sheets from the settee.
"You might want to clean up a bit love. I am expecting company shortly after mid day."

The small lad made his way through the streets of Rhydin town. He had ran as fast as his little legs would carry him. In the back of his mind an image of his sister. He comes upon the arena, just as an unnatural silence falls over the place. He looks in from the alleyway window. In the center ring, an elfin woman is placing Prudence down on the ground.
"Pru!!!!!" he screams and runs for the back door. It opens as he reaches it, knocking him into the trash that is piled out back. The person leaving continues on without even realizing what has just happened. Brian stands, then swoons and falls back into the heap.
The world is closing in around him. Soon his only vision is a pinprick of light. The pinprick winks out. Brians mind reels, over and over he sees his sister being laid on the ground. Soon his mind is numb. With the sun's first rays, a wandering salesman finds him in the gutter. he lifts the unconcious boy onto his cart and continues on.
When the lad comes to, the salesman begins to question him. Brian doesn't answer, his mind still reliving the last night. Over and over he sees his sister and the elfin lady. The saleman stops his cart and kicks Brian off it. Landing with a thud in the gutter near the Stars End Bar, Brian finds himself unconcious for the second time in two days.
Brian awakes after dark. He is lost not only in reference to home, but he is lost to the world as well. He moves slowly towards the nearest thing he can hear. The owner of the Bar finds the waif and drags him to the kitchen. He places a dirty dish in one hand and a rag in the other. He tries to talk to the waif and demonstrates what he wants him to do.
Being lost, Brian just stands there. Infurriated, the Owner whips the child till his hands begin to move over the dish. His mind somewhere else, the body acts on instinct to stop the pain. He stands there at the sink, when the owner whips him again, he stops. The owner takes the dish from his hand and places it in a pile on the left of the sink. He whips Brian again and shoves another plate from the right in his hands.
After two more rounds of whippings, he need only crack the whip to get the waif to work. By the time the pile is gone, Brians body is exhausted. The owner hands the waif a bowl of food and a spoon. Brian eats for the first time in two days. When the bowl is empty, the owner cracks the whip and Brian washes it.
Brian is shown a mat in the corner of the basement. There are bags of grain, kegs of ale, and Rats everywhere. His body is too exhausted to stay awake, he sits in a fetal position against the wall and passes out. Come morning, the owner drags Brian back upstairs. A few more tasks require a bit more *training*. By the time the Bar open, Brian had swept, dusted and wiped off all the tables. Then it was back to the kitchen when patrons started to arrive.
For months this went on. Soon Brian's body responded to the whip alone. His mind relived his sister's death every waking moment. One day, the body had been hurt enough and it commanded the legs to run. The Bar faded into the distance, the barkeep unable to catch the waif. Reaching Rhydin Town, Brian wandered around aimlessly. One night, unbeknownst to his mind he found himself in the same alley where he last remembered anything.
A few bandits tried to rob him, but when they found he was unresponsive, they beat him up for laughs. He wandered into the arena and sat in a dark corner. The edges of conciousness stirred, he knew this place. The sounds and sights found their way through his barrier somewhat. A flash back forced him to raise his knees and sit unmoving till everything died down.
Still lost, he barely acknowledged the ghost of a man who stood before him. When his body felt safe he moved into the ring in which his sister had fallen. With two hands he thrusted a dagger into the woman who killed her.

Clearing the table of dishes, Khrys leaves a small bowl of fruit in front of Brian. "There ya go, Brian. Just in case you're still hungry." As she takes the dishes to the kitchen to be washed, she calls over her shoulder, "Company? And who might that be, Love?" He replies, but she knew she must have misunderstood. "Did you say Queen Luthien? Daemon.... do you think that's a good idea right now.... I mean.....what about...." Turning away, flustered at her inability to express what she feels,
she continues to pick up his things and put them away.
From the corner of her eye she watches Brian, still sitting with his arms wrapped around his knees at the table. She notices that some of the fruit is gone, and smiles a bit. "Well, Brian O'Shaunessy, I see that you like fruit at least, if not my eggs and toast."
Once the room is cleared of the boots, and other things, she crosses to start some water for a bath for the waif, pouring in some of her perfumed bubbles. "Tsk, tsk, tsk. Brian, lad... you are sore in need of a bath, child. Come on.. into the tub."
Daemon, seeing that the boy won't move, carries him to the tub and then goes in search of something clean for the boy to wear. Gently Khrys takes his shirt off the boy, and sees the the long welts criss-crossing his back and shoulders. "Daemon..!! You need to see this. Hon.." Daemon comes at her call, and sees the marks... Gently he reaches to touch an old scar... "Some of these are months old. He's been whiped.. it looks like for several months." They bathe the boy together, with tears in
Khrys's eyes as she looks at the old scars overlaid by fresher, new welts of bright red. Finishing, Khrys dresses the child in one of Dae's shirts and a pair of shorts, and combs the unruly mop of red hair into a semblance of neatness.
Smiling at the lad Khrys leads him by the hand into the front room. "Come along now Brian. We've someone that wants to be meeting with you, dear." Moments later there is a light rapping at the cottage door, and Daemon opens it to find Luthien, waiting there with a note in her hand.

((:;slips this post in just before Khrysta's last paragraph about opening the Cottage door to find Luth))

Busy. The word was simply a descriptive of her life further back than she had time to remember. The past season was an even more intense usage of the word. With events to attend, the League matches, her wedding, reffing obligations, keeping up on the latest issues and plots in DoS politics...individual matters of diplomacy... Luthien found herself juggling swarms of thoughts in her head at once. With the exception of her Friday night shifts, where she just juggled the patron's duels. It was during such a
night when Luthien took up a pleasantly aged scotch and sipped. Her eyse ventured from the Rings and made a routine sweep of the crowd. Her gaze fell on many familiar faces of the Friday night duelists, nothing amis that wouldn't be considered ordinary at least in the arena. But one face did give her pause, and she looked twice... A scrawny, gods-forgotten urchin-child. How curious, he was looking right at her. And slightly behind him was Daemon, who's own gaze was locked fast to the staring child. She
looked away, the Rings demanded her attention.

"Final!... Jeffrey Oakenshield defeated Fandral Kurgan.. 6 - 4.5 in 15 rounds. A fine duel gentlemen!" she announced, and tossed Jeffrey a vitory rose. Shortly thereafter gathering her paperwork, she left the arena. It was quite late and her shift had overrun. She never gave a second thought to the red haired urchin who had puzzled her earlier.

~~~~~~~~~
A small boy was escorted in to see her, a message bearer by the name of Jacob Fay. He had charming manners though was quite out of breath and suffered a bit of a stutter as he spoke to her, handing over the message. It was from Daemon. Luthien arranged for the lad to be fed lunch for his trouble and offered him the use of one of Iain's horses upon which to speed home since his own mount, he relayed, had come up lame on his way...thus accounting for his shortness of breath. The lad gave her a boyish grin
and she ruffled his hair as he took off for the kitchens.
Still smiling, she turned and opened the sealed missive. Four lines into the reading, her face turned ashen.
It had taken some time to quell the guilt she bore for the loss of Prudence and Athlstan. She had been helped through that guilt by those close to her. Everything had happened for a reason, a purpose greater than any of them. This letter, however, was unexpected and that the child was involved now... seemed to pluck what remained of that guilt strait from the depths of her being, unleashing it anew.
~~~~~~~

Luthien rode up to the Satyriasis cottage late that afternoon. As she tied the horses reigns to the ringpost, she also managed for now, to tie back the fear and guilt ... she prepared to face Prudence's blood kin. Knocks on the door.

Daemon opens the door and sees Luthien standing there, his note in her hands.
"Luthien, I am so glad you came." He steps aside to allow her inside. "Welcome to Chateau Daemon,"he says trying to ease the mood. "The child is in the next room over. I would have a few words with you first."

"Of course, I would gladly hear whatever advice you can lend me. I am shocked to learn that Prudence's kin has been neglected so, had I known of him... " she faltered, looking down.

"It seems the child has been mistreated badly in the past few months. Several scars criss-cross his back, some months, some just days old. His stare is distant and his movements are awkward. The most I have gotten is a twitch as far as responses go. He twitched the first time I spoke his name, and when I mentioned his sister. It seemed important to Pru, that you see the Lad." Extending one arm he motions her out of the hallway and into the living room, falling in behind her.

Upon seeing Luthien, Brian jumps up from where he was sitting at the table. Dagger in hand, he slips past Khrysta's attempted grasp. "Murderer!!!!!," he screams and lunges forward with the Dagger.

Still reliving his sister's death, the edges of conciousness stir once more. The ghost man just called him Brian O'Shaunessy. The name is familiar to him, but everything else is gone.

"Brian, can you hear me? I spoke with your sister last night." The man was speaking to him, but his sister was dead and his mind's eye was reinforcing that fact. The couple bathed him in silence. His was numb to their movements. After the bath, the woman dressed him and attending to cleaning up. His body laced up his boots, his hand checking that the dagger was still there.

From the front of the house, there is a knock. The Ghost man goes off to answer it. Moments later, his body looks up from tieing his boots on. The elven woman who has been haunting his visions enters the room. Faster than he has ever moved in his life, the dagger comes out of his boot. Gripping it with both hands, he slips past the woman of the house.

Dagger raised high, he closes the gap in the small cottage. "Murderer!!!!!!" he screams as the gap between himself and the elf disappears, the tip of the dagger reaching her midsection.

Whatever she had prepared herself for..this certainly wasn't it. That the child hated her enough to drive a dagger at her... hurt more than the point's dull impact into her hip bone. Luthien's quick turn was only just in time to lessen the blow. There was a rush of lightheadedness as she looked to the boy a slow second before Daemon was upon him. A drop of blood dripped from the point of the weapon still in his hand. Together their eyes followed the drop's fall to the floorboards. They were, in no
way... even, she and he.

...and then the pain set in and the commotion and exclaimations began... slow motion became blurred, all in all the scene was so unexpected, combined with a vivid pang in her hip--- Luthien's last thought before fainting was that she must be cursed where children were concerned.

Khrys's eyes widen as she sees the blood on the tip of the dagger, and Daemon holding the child back as Luthien starts to fall to the floor. She moves forward, catching her and easing her into a chair rather than faint onto the hard wooden flooring.
She had expected Brian to react to Luthien.. perhaps even try to hurt her, but not this...
Khrys runs to kitchen for some cold cloths... one for the wound, and one to place on Luthien's forehead to help her recover from the faint. Once the bleeding at her hip is staunched, Khrys softly speaks a few words and holds her hand lightly over the jagged gash, closing the wound cleanly in a soft healing glow.
Turning, she looks at Daemon still holding the child away from Luthien.... his fighting knife held loosely in one hand. Turning her gaze back to Luthien's form in the overstuffed chair.... she holds the cool cloth to her brow.

In slow motion, the scene unfolded before him. A second of hesitation as he couldn't bring himself to shove a queen down to leap over her. The look in Brian's eyes, no longer glassed over, no longer the thousand mile stare. Focused, intensely, on Luthien. He held the Dagger with both hands like the time Daemon had seen him in the ring.
As he grabbed the boy, Brian did not go limp. Loosely He still held the dagger in just one hand now. As the blood dripped to the floor, Khrysta moved toward Luthien. An immense feeling of guilt began to well within Daemon. He had given Brian the knife for protection, Brian used it in an attempt to kill Luthien.
"No Brian, No," he said. "Prudence loved her like a mother. Put the dagger away lad."
In response, Brian slid the dagger back into his boot. Khrsyta looked over her shoulder then at the lad sliding the dagger back into his boot. Her eyes met with Dae's and empathically he could almost hear the scolding.
"Love, it is his knife. I promised Prudence that I would raise him in the rings and I will. I won't have you taking it from him when I leave either. It is his right to learn the Dance. I will not take from him what Prudence left." Daemon finished with a smile, and Khrysta although still angry was smilling too. Brain had been watching Daemon as he spoke, his head slightly tilted and tears where running down his cheeks.

Everything happend so quickly, he'd done it, he had killed his sister's murderer. The blood, the elf's blood dripped off the dagger onto the floorboards. The ghost man grabbed him but it was too late. The visions in his mind had stopped, the torment in his soul ended, justice had been served.
He looked to the ghost man as he was being spoken to. Any second, the dagger would be taken from his hand. He held onto it loosely. "Put the dagger away lad" was not what he expected, he slid it back into his right boot. The Ghostman continued to talk but now it was to the woman of the house.
This man had spoken with his sister. He continues to study the man, listening to his words, grasping their meaning. He would be tought to duel like his siter had always promised. The dagger was his to keep. These thoughts brought tears to his eyes and he couldn't hold them back. How odd that the couple was smiling at him while the elfin woman, dead by his hand, lay only a few feet away.
"Be she dead?" Brian asked.
"No Brian, she only fainted." The ghost man replied.
"Pru did love her like a mither?"
"Yes Brian, and Luthien loved Prudence too. You saw her die didn't you?"
"Aye," came the weak replay as Brian's eyes started to glass over again.
"Stay with me Brian, there is much you need to know about your sister's death, and the only one who can truely explain it is Luthien. I trust you will no try to stick her again."
"Aye, I will nae."
"OK, I need to pen another note, you sit down right here and wait for Luthien to come to. Then you tell her you are sorry, and ask her for forgiveness."
Brian sat where he was told and waited for the woman he had just stabbed to awake.

Still crouched on the floor next to Luthien's chair, Khrys watches Daemon as he pens a short note and rolls it into a small cylinder, tying it closed with a length of ribbon from the vanity. Thinking to herself...'He spoke..... Brian spoke...' , and all that means. Without taking her eyes from the two figures sitting in the chairs before her, she questions Daemon.
"Who are you writing to, Love?"
"To Iain..... He should be here for Luthien. I need to leave for a time. I'll be back shortly, Love. Watch Brian, and talk with him, to make sure he stays *with* us. He needs to hear what Luthien has to say when she awakens."
As she watches him open a portal and catches a glimpse of the arena beyond, she moves closer to the silent child, sitting next to the chair and placing her hand upon his arm.
"Brian..........Brian O'Shaunessy....."
The lad glances up at her at the sound of his name, and looks back to his hands clenched in his small lap. As his small hand moves in reflex towards the knife tucked away in his boot he scowls and mutters nearly under his breath, "Ye'll take it 'way, now...won' ye? He's gone an ye will."
Smiling a tender smile at him as he sits before her, so small and yet so defiant still, "No Brian, I won't. The knife was a gift to you from my husband. I won't take it from you. It's yours to keep, Sweetheart."
Moving next to him in the chair and taking him on her lap, she strokes the unruly flame of hair as her tears silently course unchecked down her cheeks. She settles in to wait.
