How sad.
There was a day when it was known that the Overlord was not just supreme dueler of DoS but the recognized leader of Rhydin.
And besides, this is not just sport. This is a community. With any social entity, politics is a fact of life. The challenging process, itself, is nothing but political maneuverings--duelists striving for position, prestige, and title.
Were there no titles being offered, then perhaps what we do here would just be considered "sport." If there were no titles, perhaps we would never have discussions about leadership and the role of those certain warlords.
Who was it that once said, "War is politics with bloodshed"?
Even when it is just a game, strategy plays an important part in the gameplans of those that win and hold the top positions consistently and for respectable amounts of time.
If it is difficult to accept my previous note as directly applicable to this "sport," consider it a metaphor.

Point taken.
However, I'd still rather see it based more on swordsmanship and less on political maneuvering. A futile struggle, I'm sure, and that's why I don't press the issue much except to fight my own matches. Maybe I'm just stupid like that.

No, just not very good about taking advantage of and holding onto the power positions.
But then again, I did not do so great myself.

"No, just not very good about taking advantage of and holding onto the power positions."
I guess not... but like I said... I had enough confidence in my ability that I thought I could get it done, and that's how I'd rather do it. If I lose, so be it; I just would rather not use the test the vast majority of the time-- I like dueling in big matches. On another note, I think the 'power' portion of the titles is overrated anyway-- most of the 'power' of the title only goes toward retaining the title itself.
I think. I'm writing this on the fly so my information may be inaccurate.

<<King Arthur was foolish enough to send Lancelot to fight his battles.>>
This is a tad off-subject, but incidentially, Lancelot was the first and last French person in history known for their valor on the field and their refusal to surrender in battle.::in jest::

>>There was a day when it was known that the Overlord was not just supreme dueler of DoS but the recognized leader of Rhydin.<<
Untrue. There have been people, at various times, who have insisted on seeing the Overlord this way. However, it has never been true. However much those of the Arena might respect, love, or in some cases despise, the Overlord he has never been more than the champion of the Duel of Swords. Powerful leaders and rulers have sometimes attached themselves to Overlords, and this can give an Overlord a lot of indirect power. However, these people attach
themselves to the individual, not the title, for the most part.
Furthermore, I strongly doubt that the many realms and Guilds of RhyDin would even acknowledge the Overlord's authority. The way things have been the past two to three years, I doubt many of them even know or care that the sport exists.

Personally, I'd rather have a Supreme Dueler whom I respect, rather than one I know can pound me into the dirt without a thought.
Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you feel about this, if you want an exceptional dueler you can throw a rock into the Arena and hit at least one. *However* to find a dueler who has strength in both their sword arm *and* their character is truly a feat.
I want a dueler whom I can respect both inside *and* outside of the ring, someone that rises above the mire that has seeped into this Community in the last couple of years. What is so wrong with that?

The overlord's sovereignity used to be published somewhere. Over the course of proprietorship, this document can no longer be found.

Wow...
Never thought I'd say this... but I agree with everything that Morgan has posted on this subject.
I think the greatest problem we have is that, in fact, the Overlord is no longer seen as a leader... as a person to look up to.
Only one problem in this whole line of postings...
Lady Starfare... There was no reason under the sun for your insult to the Staff of this sport. Save perhaps for the fact that it might be a little difficult for anyone at all to keep up with the rapid changes in title holders, I am more than certain that the Staff knows the identies of the various title holders.

::trudging homewards to her garden wing at the bunkhouse, pauses long enough to gaze over the various missives on the corks...spying a comment that catches her eyes, digs out an almost used up piece of pencil and a blank spot on a top tacked missive::
Long ago was I approached ta work these 'alls o' the duelists and gladly did I accept the challenge it wrought fer verra impressed I was wi' the ways o' the ones that roamed the rings. Mana 'ere know ma duelin' skills lack terribly and nae 'as ana e'er attempted ta 'elp one gain that knowledge..but that is neither 'ere nor there fer I 'ave nae a desire ta strive fer the ranks so valued or unvalued 'pendin' on what I see 'ere now. Yes, I must say that
once there was much ado about 'onor and the rights o' passage fer the gainin' o' rank, and definitely the prestige o' 'oldin' a title, especially the o'erlord's crown. 'as it all disappeared? Nae all I 'ope. There tis some that still deems it that way...I bein' one o' 'em, ta 'old ta the old 'onorable ways e'en tho I will ne'er 'old such as a title. That is nae the path I walk, but that is nae ta say that I know naught o' the workin's o' the lands.
Do nae class one as such that doesna know who 'as attained what title or such fer that is what 'olds itself ...~ ::snaps the fragile peice of lead accidentily as it wanders off the edge of the missive on the cork, not finding another to write with shrugs and wanders on home::

I'm sorry, Drake and Morgan, but I personally feel that if I cannot defend the overlord title like the surpreme dueler, then I shouldn't be surpreme dueler in the first place. It's just one reason why I haven't challenged for overlord yet; I simply do not think I am best to represent this community as overlord.

Interesting thought Var...
But does the Overlord represent the Community with his sword alone? I think not.
I believe that it's presicely this kind of attitude that is destroying the dignity, respect and honor of the Duel of Swords.
It's only a small step from saying "It's just a Sport" to saying "It's just a Game."
Once upon a time, it was a Community Respect and position weren't always measured by skill with a blade...
It's taken me a long time, but I think I see what people mean by "the old days" and how they are long gone.

I agree that this is a community, Drake, but still, I feel that an Overlord should be capable of defending the title himself. If my previous words spoke otherwise, I apologize for the confusion.

Overlord Magnus,
I personally dislike you. I also think you are among the most deserved to hold the Crown in a long time. Well done. Well reigned, Gunther.
