Challenge to the Sixth: The Day Before

They met in the back of the Inn, the only two patrons at a table well away from the bar. Quietly, they spoke for a few moments, sharing pleasantries like any friends, although the man did not look well. Then the Overlord stood, handed the woman a small black velvet bag, bent to whisper a few words in her ear, and slipped away.

Simini held the bag in her hand for just a moment, having no need to look inside. She knew its importance, its feel, and its otherwordly weight. She also knew it did not truly belong to her.

Abruptly, she stood, her smallish fist closing around the bag, and one smooth glide of a turn brought her to the steps leading to her sanctuary upstairs.

He knew that going out was no longer an option. The sickness was getting worse as the hours passed. It only made his life that much worse that he couldn't be around for the people he loved. He had already missed the warlord tourney, and he knew there was no way for him to make the barons match tomorrow. It was with much strength that he was able to make it here. He was at the table for a while, more trying to catch his
breath after the exertion than anything. Funny, it was a basic displacement spell he used. One that on any normal day would be but a blink of the eye. Yet, now he sat in the back of the Inn coughing a sucking down air.

When she came, he smiled, and tried to hide everything that was wrong. Weakness was not an option. Not for one that was strong. One look into her crystal blue clear eyes, and he knew she saw. She saw he was sick. But did she know? No, no one could. No one but Christopher, and them.

A few words were exchanged, formalities more than anything. In truth, this little excursion was really hurting him. He knew he had to leave. He took out the small bag, so smooth to the touch. It had been with him since the day he got it. How strange he thought for a brief moment, that he was so close to a renegade baron. Oh, he knew the reasons for her alignment, and could only hope to have her loyalty one day. Handing her the bag, he leaned in to
whisper but a few words. Why he would never know. No one else was around, and there was no need for it. He fought ever muscle in his body not to cough right there as he whispered. His eyes shut, fighting the pain, and then he leaned back. A final nod and then he turned to leave.

His last image was of her holding that bag, not even curious about what was in it. The something that was so very important in different ways to both of them. Once away he leaned against the wall. His face white as ever, he no longer had to hide it. Christopher was right there by his side as he grabbed on. Avery looked down to the boy, and saw nothing but a look of fear in Christopher's eyes. He nodded once, and Christopher ran off to fetch a
carriage. The first time Avery wouldn't have used the simple spell in a long long time.

She was ready.

In her mind, it was not Daryl Kyle she faced, but Fate, Destiny, the Goddess - whomever had the job of making sure that people were in their right place at the right time. Nae, Daryl was but a symbol of a Tester far closer to the heavens.

She was ready.

Her mind was calm and clear this time, her movements sure. RC's recent training had helped here, too. He had always been the one to show her the Way... to remind her not only to focus, but to let go, and let her blackstone blade guide itself.

Tonight, she would entrust her Destiny to that philosophy.

It was over, and Fate had decided. Her contribution to the sport of the Duel of Swords would now take forms other than serving as Baron of the Sixth, and Simini had no regrets. Indeed, she felt refreshed, renewed - although she had tried her hardest to be a proper and active Baron, she still felt more at home... more... herself as a simple patron.

Perhaps her project with Lupton and RC will prove a more lasting contribution than a term as Baron, anyway. There was still much work to be done, however, and Simini turned her focus to that.
