Curiosity is killing the Roman.

It has come to my attention that the Baron of the Fourth is still technically Zen Rising, even though it is a well-known fact in the Community that he has departed from Rhydin. Obviously, he has done so without the formality of vacating his ring. This is not a criticism of Zen. But am I curious...how long before the Council is able to recongize the basic fact that he is gone, and free up the Fourth?

It is not our jurisdiction to step in and remove the ring from Zen's possession unless we are called upon to make some sort of judgment.
However, I am not sure if this case would even call for our decision. There is no discrepancy in the rules; this is probably more in the hands of Val or Drake.
Then again, we can't even remove the ring from Zen's possession if he has left the realm of Rhydin for good, unless you want to go out and look for him.

Zen has left rings vacant before from absence from the community. The Baron's Council should seek out the Baron and if a reply is not heard by the announcement of the Warlord's Tourney, the title should be up for grabs for the particpating active Warlords. Or a Warlord should challenge for the title, and if the Baron does not answer, than have the challenger fight the Overlord for the right to bear the Fourth
as their own.

This certainly isn't the first time a ring has been vacated due to the holder leaving the area. How were the rings retrieved before, or were they at all?

I will attempt to settle this situation once again.
Cas... I believe I discussed this matter with you before.
Xerzes writes: "This certainly isn't the first time a ring has been vacated due to the holder leaving the area. How were the rings retrieved before, or were they at all?" I am not certain how the rings were retrieved before, but I have placed tracing spells upon all the Rings and am quite capable of retrieving the Fourth. I also believe that there is
a strong possibility that I would be able to contact Baron Rising with a bit of effort.
Baron Var writes: "It is not our jurisdiction to step in and remove the ring from Zen's possession unless we are called upon to make some sort of judgment.
However, I am not sure if this case would even call for our decision. There is no discrepancy in the rules; this is probably more in the hands of Val or Drake." I believe this to be the case, and will discuss the matter with Turi and Val.

An unsigned post states: "Or a Warlord should challenge for the title, and if the Baron does not answer, than have the challenger fight the Overlord for the right to bear the Fourth as their own." I've said this before... I find it surprising that no one has followed this path.

Gentles,

Indeed, tis nae the first nor the second time that the Baron Zen Rising hast vanished from the realms. Tis simply another example of the darkness which descends upon this ancient sport.

During the reign of Lord Dalamar Ar'Daumon, the Baron failed to appear or e'en participate in the Council deliberations surrounding the challenge unto Dalamar made by the then warlord, Huma Dragonbane. Immediately preceding the Warlord Tourney at the time, the Baron wast stripped of his title by the Council and his Ring wast given o'er to the Tourney.

Per the rules of engagement, the 'missing' Baron may be held ast having forfeited his title shouldst he hae nae lifted blade during the current cycle of these rings wherefore the Council wouldst certes hae the prerogative of removing said Baron from his seat upon the Council immediately prior to the opening of the Warlord's Tourney.

Indeed, were couriers sent to scour the realms and planes for the Baron and were to return with nae trace of the Baron to be found, methinks t'would indeed behoove the members of the Council ast well ast the Overlord to hae pondered the matter and to consider the removal of the Baron from his seat upon the Council.

Said Baron hast publicly commented within the precincts of the basement manna times that he wast considering another departure. Perhaps he hast fallen to an assassin. Perhaps he hast been detained upon his homeworld. Perhaps he hast fallen to foul fiends and brigands. Perhaps he simply hast chosen to depart the realms of his own free will.

Yet one needs must merely study the history of this personage and his penchant for 'disappearances' ast well ast the fact that he hast, in past, failed to perform his duties ast a seated baron nae once but thrice to consider bringing this matter before the Council.

The baron Zen Rising ist thrice bearer of the Fourth. One wouldst hope the seeming careless disregard the baron hast shown for the storied Fourth Ring wouldst engender ire among his peers ast well ast among those of the community, that ist presuming he hast 'vanished' of his own accord and nae be held against his will.

With respect to his Ring, should the baron hae vanished from all ken the Council may also ponder seeking skilled craftsman to forge a new Fourth Ring.

The Eighth Ring wast desecrated. Those who hae since held the Eighth hae done little to restore the Ring to the grandeur and glory it once represented. Perhaps tis that it wast nae properly recrafted by skilled artisans and yet bears the taint of the desecration wrought upon it. Now t'would seem the Fourth Ring hast vanished along with the Baron Zen Rising.

Long agon, the Baron Ulath Fici didst vanish from these realms, however, he didst leave the ring in the care of another.

Madame Silvertree wast heard to declaim that she had a 'way of retrieving' the Fourth. A right interesting premise indeed. The statement wouldst lead one to believe she hast knowledge of the Baron's location and or perhaps the location of the Fourth Ring. One wouldst hope if that be the case, that Madame Silvertree wouldst deign to apprise the Council of her knowledge of either the Baron or the ring.

Of those that once bore the Fourth Ring, the Lady Halo, Lord Dalamar Ar'Daumon, the twice holder Shade, twice holder, Lupton est Dracoern, Damien Centran, G'nort Espelande G'neesmacher Dragoon Talanador, Philip Kardinal, the Lady Beka Cavish, twice holder Huma Dragonbane, Jesse Troyan, Daegarth Mithmellon of House Phoenix, Morgan le Fay du Cornwall, and Laird Seamus MacDonnaugh, none save the 'vanishing' Baron hast shown such callous disregard for
the handling of the Ring itself. E'en the brash one, Jesse Troyan, when he choose to relinquish the title and ring, didst see that the Ring wast given o'er afore witnesses unto the official following the challenge match.

I do call upon the members of the Council to begin a search for the 'vanished' Baron and the missing Fourth. Perhaps also the members of the Council might question Madame Silvertree with regard to any knowledge she may have of the whereabouts of the Baron or the ring. One wouldst hope an official of this sport wouldst be forthcoming with any information she may hold with regard to the missing Baron ast well ast the Fourth Ring.

Madame Silvertree.

A rather interesting comment thee make to whit. "...but I have placed tracing spells upon all the Rings and am quite capable of retrieving the Fourth." Madame, considering yuir penchant for a much less than professional understanding of the arcane arts ast hae been proven manna times, in addition to yuir attempts to tamper with the Wards of Gondar ast well ast yuir inability to perceive the weavings of the ley lines on manna occasions, I for one,
find it rather amusing that thee claim to have lain tracing spells upon the rings.

A most adoit bit of spell casting if in fact thee hast done ast thee so claim, Madame. Such spells, to be able to trace an object upon another plane, most oft require quite an expenditure of the energies ast well ast leave those who do bear the rings in perhaps open to being traced by those who aire nae upstanding.

I must also inquire if thee hae the permission of the holders of the Rings to place such arcane spells upon those Rings whilst they be in the possession and under the protection of the Barons? Perhaps thee took nae thought to the possibility that such spells leave a signature and couldst ast well lead to the personage in whose possession the Rings may reside, perhaps placing said personage in danger?

Ast I recall, thee thought nae annathing of attempting to tamper with the Ward of Gondar, which led to the demise of a duelist with the sanctuary of the rings. How utterly callous of thee, Madame, if in fact thee hae lain such a powerful spell upon those artifacts , to nae consider all the ramifications of that use of the adept arts. Certain of the Baron's may take ill effect at the proximity of such a spell or hae thee made careful the crafting to
negate any ill effects that may attain unto the personages of the Barons or for that matter hae thee pondered the possible ill effects the proximity of those "spelled" Rings may hae unto the loved ones of said Barons?

For further edification.

The tracing spells placed upon the Rings were done so with the knowledge that the Rings belong to the Duel of Swords, not to the Barons who hold them.
Each Baron is a custodian of the Ring they bear, and as a representative of the Duel of Swords I have acted to protect the interests of the Duel of Swords.
When, at such time, I am no longer a representative of the Duel of Swords, I shall remove my tracing spells.

Madame Silvertree,

And who wast it that instructed thee to place such arcane spells upon the rings, Madame? Or didst thee decide to do so unilaterally and with nae apparent care for the possible harm thee may hae engendered by thine willy nilly use of the arcane arts? Much ast thee attempted to tamper with the Wards of Gondar, Madame, and displayed nae a modicum of concern for the harm engendered, thee claim to hae laid spells upon already magically crafted and
spelled rings again eschewing any care for the possible harm that act may engender.

Protecting the best interests of the Duel of Swords, Madame? Perhaps thee dinna consider the "Best Interests of the Duel of Swords" ast to include apprising the Barons that they are bearers of Rings bearing spells which may lead the Barons or their loved ones to be placed in jeopardy?

How utterly arrogant, Madame, that thee consider thine magical skills ast being unable to be negated shouldst someone chose to remove thine spells from a Ring. I am always amused by a so called mage who displays such little true knowledge of the adept arts.

Further, Madame, thine arrogance in stating that ast a representative of the Duel of Swords thee feel free to do ast thee chose ist further proof of thine need nae thine desire for power. Madame, hae thee truly the best interests of the Duel of Swords at heart, thee wouldst resign thine position and hie yuirself off to thine duchy and spare the community thine pompous rantings.

Kindly dinna instruct me ast to the Baron's being custodians of the Rings, Madame. I wast there when the Original Nine Rings were granted ast well ast when the Later Four Rings were granted. I find it utterly droll that thee seem to consider those who indeed be custodians of the Rings ast to nae be capable without thine help to guard the rings. Dost consider that the Barons aire so lackwitted, dullards perhaps that they must rely upon thee and
thine paltry skills to see the rings be looked after?

Madame, indeed, the best interests of the Duel of Swords wast long served by those who truly hae the best interests of the sport at heart. Thee, Madame, aire nae among them. Thee hae only thine own interests at heart, Madame. A selfish, whining, arrogant, wench who hast nae the vaguest idea what be indeed the best interests of the Duel of Swords. Thee hae proven that time after time, Madame. Thou art little more than a sycophant, Madame, a truly
sad statement of just what the once glorious Duel of Swords hast become. This is not the Duel of Drakewyn, Madame, much ast it wast nae the Duel of Helix. Ast a representative of the Duel of Swords, Madame, thee aire the servant, nae the Mistress. Perhaps one day that shall get through that thick addled skull of thine.

Bluntly,

This, scrawled on a small sheet of paper next to Jonalyn's response to Drakewyn's official response:

"Number of times the word 'Madame' is used: 16
Record for 'Madame' in one paragraph: 7
New vocabulary words for the week:
sycophant: noun; servile, self-seeking flatterer. See also: Parasite
dullard: noun; a stupid or unimaginative person

Now taking bets on where and when the cat fight will occur. Jonalyn is currently favored at +11. Contact Nova Grey Shadow for odds and timetable."

And, with that, Nova Grey Shadow closes his dictionary* (which he never fails to bring with him when Jonalyn's posts are involved), and heads off.

I am never wearing a ring again if they contain some sort of tracing spell.

Doesn't this frighten anyone else? This woman up and decided to track the every movement of every Baron without informing them, or asking their permission. That scares me. What kind of self-righteous, pompous, and power-starved individual would do this?

It's obvious she cares nothing nothing for privacy. Do you want to be followed magically at every moment? Your location available at any given whim?

Thank you, Drakewyn! You're so wise to have installed such protective measures while no one was looking. I hear Rix takes his showers in the early morn, you may wish to peek in on him then.

I'm, at best, livid. I can't believe she thinks herself so great a being that she can just do this. If I had a ring, I'd return it post-haste.

I understand why she saw no problem with invading Ian's skybox without his permission. Afterall, she is already invading everything every Baron does.

These things done "for our own good" start dictatorships and oppression. It's an act of tyranny.

It makes me ill to consider.

I call for Drakewyn's removal from her position of Standings Keeper.

::Reading some of the posts again, he hits himself in the forehead, forgetting to address a couple more issues::

I remember I once suggested that a spell be placed upon the rings, just in case some idiot like Methous got the ring again and tried to break it. The spell I suggested, of course, would prevent the ring from being broken. This suggestion occurred after Methous broke the ring, and it was a letter to the Council of Barons. It was a suggestion to make sure none of the rings would have to go through that again. I also remember how that motion
was either denied or ignored; in either case, nothing was done.
Maybe someone can explain why one spell was put on the rings, when another spell I personally find useful, was not. I'm just curious.

With that said, I have another issue regarding issuing challenge to Zen to get the ring by forfeit. The Universal Terms of Challenge state the following:

"All challenges and answer to challenge must be sent to both the Standings Keeper and Baron or Overlord being challenged for purposes of notification and validation."

Is it possible to consider it a valid challenge when you send it to someone who apparently doesn't exist in these realms anymore?
Besides, wouldn't you rather have someone win the ring in a tourney, through skill, as opposed to getting a cheap win out of it? I know I would, even though I am quite mad at Zen.
I think that's it. I hope I didn't forget anything else.

Wow, some of you people are taking this incredibly the wrong way. If you wish to think that a tracing spell is wrong, I think you're pretty much an idiot.

I find that knowing where the rings would be *When Needed* is rather useful. It would make it possible to find the ring in the case of it being stolen.

I am sure it won't tell exactly where the Baron in question is or what he is doing at the time. And if that causes you to not want a ring, then well, You probably don't deserve it anyway.

Avoiding the Ring discussion, since some things about it make me feel quite uneasy . . .

If someone challenged Zen and he did not respond, I would push the council to strip possession of the Ring from him and make the challenger face a champion for the right to wear the Ring. But until that happens, I do not think the council can do anything about it.
