A Champion's Duty

In the soft moonlight spilling through the window, she looked to be made of ivory. Her bare shoulder and neck called to him, as did her delicate lips. A smile played about his own lips as he remembered her pale arms wrapped around him, and her head resting on his chest. That chest constricted with the thought that he was going to be away from her for so long. As much as he was dedicated to his duties, Llenlleawc did not want to leave this woman.Shaking himself, the knight tore his gaze from the sleeping Sarana and finished dressing. His riding leathers were plain, and had foregone his house colors for this trip. His armor was limited to metal studs in his leather jacket, and hardened leather greaves and bracers. His blade, once more looking plain and worn, he buckled to his hip in an equally worn and plain looking leather scabbard. A dagger hilt protruded from the top of his right boot. Tying his ebony curls back with a simple leather thong, Llen completed his outfit. Hefting his packed saddlebags over his shoulder, he was, physically at least, ready to go.Bending down over the bed, he softly kissed his sleeping love, and whispered into her ear; "I do love thee, and I shall return as quickly as I may." With one final kiss, which brought a small noise from Sara...one Llen often thought of as her "happy noise," the champion turned and walked softly from the chamber. At the sound of the door latch closing, the beautiful half-elf's ice blue eyes opened, she turned her face into the pillow, and let the tears flow. The roses watched her from the vase on the windowsill. Unable to comfort her despite their beauty, they were silent. 30 of them, one for each day he was to be gone.A few minutes later, a single rider left the castle gate, heading swiftly up the road to the east. Duty had called him, and, as he must, the king's champion had answered.

::Once the door closed, she knew he would not be back for a long time...looking about the room..hoping that maybe the noise was not the door closing...seeing that Llen was no longer in the room. She buried her face in her pillow and the tears started to flow freely...One moons cycle was a long time. She had kept silent and not cried while he was there..She knew that he did not want to leave and letting him see the tears would have made it harder
on him. Many hours passed as the tears continued to flow...a touch of anger creeping into her sadness...How could he leave her again? Seems that everytime they start to have time together, he has to leave again...Once again duty calls him away and he says there is no danger...if there were no danger, then why must he be the one to go? Why can he not send someone in his place?...She stayed the entire day in bed crying and feeling a bit hurt that he
seemed not completely honest. As evening creeps in, so does her anger...With determination to keep busy, she dresses and heads out to the arena..
Upon entering, she is suddenly saddened to again be there without Llen, and remembered that they first met here. The first duel that they shared and Mathais calling...it had been a very romantic evening, the first of many..As of late, her nights alone in the arena had become many and less and less time the two were sharing. Aja and Mith were there this eve to offer a bottle of tequella...Sara, being accustomed to stronger drinks, managed to
drink the entire bottle by herself..One duel was all she could stand, a tie after fifteen rounds...Being here was just not right, it was too hard to see their friends....Grabbing a bottle of jack and slipping out the back door...back to the castle to sulk and drink herself into oblivion...::

The moon shone her rays on a single horse, obviously tired from a long journey, and his rider. The man in the saddle sat hunched and worn, weary, and glad to be almost finished with his adventure. Dark eyes looked out from a sand-and-sun worn face and glittered in the moonlight as they beheld the walls of Lakehome. He was patient though. Having been gone for almost a month, the half-hour required to reachthe keep gates would be an eyeblink, and a necessary eyeblink for his mount. Lorran had served him well on this adventure, and it would not do to ruin the mighty stallion for something as petty as arriving home a few minutes earlier. Encouraged at the nearness of home, man and horse pressed on.Entering the keep at so late an hour, the man was loathe to disturb the servants, and so woke only the stable master to see to Lorran's needs, and took himself to the open baths beneath the keep. There he stripped from his worn and battle-damaged riding leathers and sank gratefully into the pool. Oddly (to those who would not know him), he paused long enough to remove a battered and worn-looking sword from the pile of clothing and place it near theedge of the pool where he could easily reach it. The jeweled hilt of a dagger was left negligently protruding from one boot-top. The man scrubbed his skin with cleansing sands and winced as he struck newly healing wounds. There would be scars, but none too deep or long. With a sigh, he soaked for a few minutes more before drying himself and making his toweled way from the baths to the private rooms upstairs. He stood above the woman slumbering in the moonlight. Once again, he was struck by how beautiful she was. He coughed softly, and suddenly felt a bit foolish standing there wearing only a towel and holding his broadsword in hand. As he stepped forward to place the blade upon the empty pegs above the headboard, his bare foot kicked a glass bottle, sending it spinning across the floor and into another with a loud crash. Before he could move, the mighty knight was tackled by the once sleeping woman, and found himself pinned to the floor, her nearly-naked body seated upon his chest, legs pinning his arms, and a sharp dagger at his throat. "Who are you? How did you get past the guards?!! Give me one reason why I shouldn't kill you right now!" A heavily tequila-laden voice demanded of him as the dagger blade bit into his throat. "Um, love? Do you really want to use that thing on me? I mean...the carpet...it'll never come clean..."The smile on his face died instantly when she pressed the blade hard enough into his neck to draw blood and hissed to him something about her love being away, and long hair, and a few other things that were lost in a semi-drunken monologue, but ending with her accusing him of "talking all wrong..not formal enough."At that point, it occured to Llen that he had cut his hair quite short on his trip, and had been speaking in the informal way of soldiers. Realizing that he hadn't time to talk his way out of his mistake before the blade severed his windpipe, the knight simply grabbed his lover's wrist, twisted, and rolled. The end position involved him on top, Sarana pinned beneath him, the towel on one side of the room, and the dagger on the other. With a slightsmile, he said: "Thou art still fiesty as ever my love, and whilst I do appreciate thy defense of our bedchamber, thy fondness for tequella doth still impair thy reactions...with the balde that is."Then, having no other way to convince her readily at hand, he presented his best argument ever...and kissed her.Late the next morning, Sara looked at the man sleeping beside her in their bed.. Gone were the ebon curls that once cascaded to his shoulders were gone. His hair was now cropped straight and short (very short) on the sides, and was not much longer on the top. His bangs he had kept, and they ended just above his eyebrows. This was good, as they partially managed to hide what was going to become a small (she hoped) scar above his left eyebrow. Hisbody was tanned by the desert sun, and though he was still fit, he had lost weight. She didn't like the new hair, nor the new scars, but all in all, she was happy to have him back. Now, if only he hadn't passed out so soon after waking her up last night...well, he'd had plenty of rest by now she thought, and began tickling his ribs with a wicked grin.....

::written on a sheet of paper as fine as silk:: Lord Ironsides, The match that I called was Ironsides def. Sartan1891, 5.5-4.5. Not quite so impressive as you would make it appear. Perhaps you should work on your bragging skills or, at the least, be assured that your facts are correct before tacking them up for all to see the mistakes you have made. Qwendolen Bryonor something like that

He *did* have that tremendous night, and he *did* shut out someone in DoF on his first try at it. Now all ya got ta do, Gabriel, is do the same things tanight too.`Sartan

Ye are quite the duelist and I am honored to have gotten lucky enough to beat ye. Sara ::walks away, shaking her head and muttering:: I still can't believe how many people he beat last night...
