Fellow patrons, especially non-officials and non-title holders,
Today, while reading through the newest batch of the histories of the Baronial Rings, I came across something rather interesting in regard to the Sixth.
Apparently, there was a large debate over how the former Baron, Daryl Kyle, responded to his last challenge. This debate was kept between the officials and title holders, while the community at large was kept unaware of this happening.
I have to ask, why?
We, the community of the Duel of Swords, from highest Warlord to lowest Commoner, have the right to know about what is happening with our supposed "leaders" in the sport. Yet we were kept uninformed about this situation between Daryl Kyle and Damien Mortis.
I, for one, am very upset and sorely disappointed in our officials, Barons, and Overlord for not telling the community of the debate. I take from this event that they feel the ranks below them are not important enough to include in debates which will have a distinct impact on the rules of this sport.

I would most certainly have to join my voice with Rix's in asking why we, as a community, were kept unaware of such events. Such an issue concerns us all, and to keep it behind closed doors seems to indicate a certain sort of attitude towards the community. One of mistrust, perhaps, or at least of disregard. One would think at least one of the Barons might have felt this a tidbit worth sharing about, neh?

I would most certainly have to join my voice with Rix's in asking why we, as a community, were kept unaware of such events. I will let it be known that the problem you see does not lie within me, or my council of Barons. The initial problem arose, and was turned over to us. Before any actions were taken by the council, the Supervisor of the sport did come to tell us that this was not a council problem. There was no need to alarm the community of it from our stand point then, as it was the officials that took the matters into there hands.
Most know that while I held my ring I was very vocal about keeping the community aware. Both of the process, and the outcome. Along with the individual voting. While the histories my state that the council was involved we never were. I was not notified at first of this problem, as the courier forgot to bring the letters to me. ((Left off the mail stirng)) Without a supervisor the council did nothing, but wait for a direction to go. It was my first
motion that indeed Val let us know if this was a matter for us to attend to. It was not, and therefor not our business to conduct.

With all due respect to the Overlord, I seem to remember quite a few missives from the Council on the subject before Young Lord Evermeadow decided to settle the situation with former Baron Daryl Kyle. You say yourself, Avery, that initially the situation was in the Council's hands.
As to why no public notice was posted, quite honestly I don't think it occurred to anyone that the situation was drastic enough to require it. For most of the time it was completely unclear if any wrong had actually been committed. Why set Lord Kyle up for public thrashing when he may not have done anything worthy of it? The final decision was within hours of the Challenge Match, little enough time to make a public declaration.
If having no public declaration of the situation is distressing to many of the patrons, however, I will discuss with Young Lord Evermeadow and the Overlord the merits of releasing Council debate subjects to the public before all the facts are known the next time a situation requiring the Council arises.

I would expect, however, that in a case involving a challenge which required council or supervisory intervention, that a statement might be made. I will, however, place on the record my opinion that such rulings should always be presented before the public, so that we might learn from them, and so that the

To be totally honest, Nothing officially went to the council. This was not actually a council event, nor were any council members required or did vote on this matter.
Therefore, there was nothing to really report.

The supervisor made a ruling, and the matter was apparently brought to light in the archives, so apparently, there was, indeed, something to report.
The council may very well have had nothing to report, but someone did. If a matter is going to be referred to in the histories as a controversy, it would seem that someone, somewhere, should have had the obligation to inform the community.

A few days after Damien recieved confirmation of his peer wins from Drakeywn, the former Baron Kyle sent a missive to the council, the Overlord, and a handful of officials. In the letter, he set the time and date of the match and announced that he had planned to have Avery interceed on his behalf.
He wanted this intercesssion to be kept a secret from Damien, therefore he never sent a letter to Damien finalizing the date and time. After a week had passed, Damien sent a letter to the council stating that he never recieved an acceptance from the former Baron. Drakewyn found the Baron at fault and sent the matter to the council barring an overruling from the Supervisor.
A day later, Val took the matter out of our hands and we didn't hear another word about it until the day of the match.
That's basically what happened, if I'm leaving something out, someone please correct me.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but what Var is saying here is, that the letter went to Damien as acceptance, but was not copied to Drake. According to the rules, the Challenger and Standings Keeper must be informed of acceptance to the challenge, eh?
