Challenge to the Baron of the 12th

"Nice hit for a girl," she mimicked again, angrily. What was it with guys in the sports and their need to make those kind of comments, she wondered. Well, she wouldn't stand for it with Brash and the Outback gang, nor would she stand for it in the Arena. With a muttered string of curses, she wrote a letter and posted it to the board, for all to see her challenge. Slamming the paper onto the board, she
hung it up and stalked away.

Cassius Gaius Maximius,

I'd like another chance to give you a nice hit, from a girl. I hereby challenge you to a duel. If I win, you will retire the ring you currently hold, Baron. Should you win, I will never fight again in the Arena, and keep my "girl fighting" to other places.

Are you man enough?

Dustin walked to the boards, Ria's note caught his eye.

"Damn, can't the baron of the 12th enjoy his ring for more than a week?"

He snickered, and walked off.

Ria, I was jesting. I thought you knew that. But so be it.

I accept your challenge. With the added offer of releasing your from your part of the wager. In other words, I will put my ring on the line...
and you face no consequences should you lose. My only condition is that I be allowed to use all my skill.

Are you *woman* enough?

I wonder if he'll keep his word if he losses.. I know he's not well known for doing that.

It wasn't long before Ria returned, calmed somewhat. Surprisingly, there was a response from Cas. Even more surprisingly, he had accepted. "Well well" she murmured. Quickly, she penned a response and added that to the pile.

Should I lose, I will never fight in the Arena again. I would not ask anyone to risk something with me not risking myself in return.

As for using all your skill, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Ria Wells

Smiling slightly, she walked back to the others with the look that she knew something no one else did.

Having fought, and lost, Ria couldn't help but smile slightly as she wrote. Blood dripped down the paper, a result of her cuts from the blade.

Cas,

I apologize for anything that might have upset you, and hold you in the highest respect simply for accepting the challenge of someone like me. You're a good man, and I
wish you well.

Ria Wells

Posting it, she exited from the Arena.

So much for Cletus and Cas's reconciliation I guess. It lasted a week? Or did it not even last that long?

I'm merely speaking the truth. If you find this insulting Cassius, then maybe you should do something to change it.

::Yawns::

Honor duels are painfully overrated. I just don't see a point to them.

"You're a jerk."
"Yeah? Fight me for it. Loser has to leave."
"Fine!"
(insert five to fifteen rounds of two people hitting eachother)
"Hey, you beat me. You're not a jerk anymore. Well, I guess that since you kicked me around, I'll leave, even though I wouldn't have left if you got lucky with a win."

It's almost as if one measly duel where one person gets luckier that time around should have a land-shattering effect on how the rest of the world turns.
I can't wait until I get to watch Jesse, Gunthar, and Damien pound on eachother, and don't try to declare any "honor" behind it.

Still, I am waiting for an upcoming honor duel where the winner gets to kick the loser's cat. Least then I'd actually care about the duel, but only because my concern would be for the animal who got stuck in the middle.
Oh well, I've wasted enough time explaining the stupidity of "honor duels." I'm going to do something that I really want to do, and that's spend time with my family.

Duelist X + Duelist Y + Honor Duel = Yuck + Waste of Time

That's Var's equation for the day.

Speaking of which, once more that takes place this Thursday, at nine I think. Three barons will show, one will leave.

The woman paused before the ancient cork, one slim raven brow arched as she perused the missive. She set quill to parchment, then tacked the note to the cork.

Baron Var Medici-Giovanni,

Ah am saddened th' thee seem ta 'old honor hae such little import, sir, an' wouldst so demean th' sport an' thineself ast ta infer th' such duels be 'stupid'. In fact, M'lord Medici-Giovanni, Ah am more th' saddened, Ah am appalled thee wouldst so cavalierly disparage such a duel.

Ah am reminded th' thee 'eld long agon th' ta duel t'wixt th' then Baron Jeffrey Oakenshield an' ta Oathbreaker 'uma Dragonsblade wast wi'out merit for in thee 'eld th' an Honor Duel 'eld little meaning.

Perhaps th' be ta reason thee didst put forth ta name 'o th' perfidious Jaycynda Ashleana ta stand ast champion 'o th' Ninth Ring, a choice, sir, wh' Ah couldst consider naught bu' contempt for ta sport an' ta 'onor 'o th' Rings. Ah wast mos' assuredly pleased th' ta Council chose another ta champion ta Ninth. Th' 'onor 'o th' Ninth deserved better th' a wench wh' earned 'er ring by deceit ast its champion.

Thou art certes entitled ta thine opinions, Baron, yet Ah mus' ask thee now, sir, whyfore dost demean thine fellow Barons, Cassius Gaius Maximus, Jesse Troyan, Gunthar O'Dwyer an' Damien Mortis by thine crass an' sarcastic comments? Further, sir, whyfore dost demean th' ancient bloodsport ast well by thine statements, sir?

Thee state "....and don't try to declare "honor" behind it." Ah shall dare, sir, an' declare th' indeed there be 'onor in th' acceptance 'o th' Baron Troyan's offer by ta Barons Mortis an' O'Dwyer, sir.

Thee hae declined ta place thine title an' ring on ta line, sir, ast be certes thine privilege. Aye, ast well when Ah didst inquire 'o th' Barons Unagi Miyamoto, Deluthan Ev'rt, Daelin Dragonsblade, Dustin, Cassius Gaius Maximus an' Cletus Gandarfald they didst eschew acceptin' ta Baron Troyan's offer.

Ta Baron Cletus Gandarfald dost face challenge by ta warlord Spike u'Shell Momus, an' hae commented th' 'e may consider ta offer once th' challenge hae been fought.

Perhaps thee feel th' only those wh' lay down ta gauntlet at thine feet in official challenge be worthy 'o thine steel, Baron? Be th' so, then one mus' ponder why thee e'en bother ta lift blade 'o an' eve? Dost nae feel thine skills be challenged each time thee set foot within a ring? Dost nae feel ta need ta duel ta th' bes' 'o thine ability each time thee enter th' ring?

Wh' perhaps thee consider ast bein', ta use yuir own phrase, 'painfully overrated', was once 'eld ta be among th' fionest traditions 'o th' ancient sport.

Th' eve th' Jeffrey Oakenshield didst face ta warlord Huma Dragonsblade an' didst declare 'e wouldst forfeit 'is title an' ring shouldst Huma best 'im yet burns in mine memory an' certes in ta memory 'o those wh' didst witness it ast an' eve when ta true meanin' 'o 'onor didst shine like a bright beacon within th' ancient cavern.

Ah know nae th' cause 'o thine seemin' growin' malaise, Baron, save th' Ah didst witness thee, whilst thee didst duel yuir fellow Baron, Cassius Gaius Maximus, do naught bu' wh' couldst be construed ast makin' nae attempt attal ta gi' 'im a worthy match. Likewise, Ah didst witness Cassius continue ta match after sayin' 'e wouldnae were thee ta continue showin' 'im wh' 'e didst consider disrespect. Ah wouldst be more th' willin' ta wager th' thee
wouldst nae hae performed in such a manner ast thee hae were thine 'onor or thine ring ta hae been at risk, sir.

For one 'o titled rank ta behave in such a manner, an' ta one 'o 'is fellow Barons, speaks nae well 'o thee, Var Medici-Giovanni. Likewise, Cassius Gaius Maximus' failure ta turn 'is back 'pon thee an' exit th' ring dost nae speak well 'o 'im, yet perhaps couldst be expected. Yet, 'o th' two 'o thee th' eve, t'was Cassius wh' didst duel ta th' bes' 'o 'is ability, whilst thee deliberately dinna, sir.

Wh' 'onor be there in thee th' thee wouldst so deliberately do ought bu' wh' canst be called nothin' short 'o throwin' th' duel?

Now thee come forth an' disparage thine fellow Baron, Cassius Gaius Maximus, for standin' forth an' facin' th' wench. Indeed, sir, Ah found ta wench's challenge unta th' Baron frivolous an' little more th' perhaps an' attempt ta garner attention fer 'erself an' an' attempt ta place Cassius in a poor light.

Ah hae nae likin' fer ta Baron, Cassius Gaius Maximus, for in, more oft th' nae 'e behaves ta lout, an' hae shown 'imself ta be among those wh' hae brought th' once 'onorable an' ancient sport ta th' brink 'o th' Abyss. Yet, sir, now, tis seemin' thee ast well be followin' th' same dark road.

Sir, though Ah yet 'old thee in esteem, thine missive gives me pause. Tis mine 'ope th' thou canna be ast bereft 'o 'onor ast thine missive wouldst make it seem. Tis mine 'ope th' thee hae nae succumbed ta th' creepin' blight an' darkness wh' continues ta descend 'pon th' sport.

Perplexed,

Jona,
Simply, there is less honor when the only reason you will do something is because someone beat you in the match.
If you want to do something "honorable" then you should do it. You shouldn't wait until someone beats you in a ring before you do the right thing.
Yes, I did hold the honor duel between Jeff and Huma to have little meaning, along with the honor duel between Percy and Roland. If Huma was stupid himself to let himself be goaded into a fight, then break his word, that's his problem. The rules have parts in them that protects the idiots. Since you'll ask me what I mean, I refer to the fact that people can rescind their challenge with invalid peer wins without repercussion, and we cannot
hold someone to his/her word because they said it. That would be an abuse of power.
What if Roland (or Percy, I forgot who won) didn't apologize after the honor duel was fought? Would we say he no longer has the right to challenge/duel for the rest of the cycle?

Of course, Jona, I do hold honor in high regard. To use the duels to force someone to do the honorable thing is stupid.
And, of course, I was demeaning Cas and Alexandria for actually going through with the honor duel. I already said why I think honor duels are stupid, so I don't need to get in details there. As to demeaning Jesse, Gunthar, and Damien, how was I doing such? Their challenges to eachother is more out of boredom, because they want to duel with their titles at stake. They're not doing this because they think it's the "honorable" thing to do (at
least that's what I'm getting).

I ask how I did demean the bloodsport? Using the duels to make someone do something they don't think is right serves only as a facade. It's cheap, and to say "I'll only apologize/stop dueling here ever again only if you beat me" is degrading to the sport itself.

Also, I have explained why I nominated Jaycy. If you wish to insinuate I hold no honor because of such, very well. I only did what I thought was right.

Finally, where do you get the idea that only those who lay an official challenge are worthy of my attention? I have no reason to take Jesse's, Damien's, or Gunthar's challenge up, and don't allow myself to be goaded into said duels. When it comes to obtaining a title, there is only one person whom I want to defeat: the person who defeats me in a challenge. I have no personal reason to put my own title on the line just to remove them. If you
wish to call that cowardice (I'd expect it from some people), oh well. I don't appreciate your questions, which insinuate that I am pompous and arrogant, but I can't stop you.

To summarize myself... I do what I think is right. I don't think I need to be beaten in a duel to do the right thing, which is why I think Honor Duels are stupid. I suggested Jaycy because I thought that by her finally getting a valid challenge duel fought, a shadow would have been removed from the corner. I don't need to try to remove Jesse, Gunthar, and Damien from their seats, because I have my own plan to challenge back anyone who
defeats me in a challenge, and losing the title because I allowed myself to be drawn into it wouldn't help anymore.

Finally, I duel because I like to have duel. I duel anyone who asks to duel me (whoever asks first in the case of multiple people asking). When it came to my duel against Cas, I was having fun, because lately I've taken the duels so seriously, and realized I needed to relax a bit. Would I have done the same thing if my honor or ring were at stake? Of course not. You know me well enough to know I take the tenth ring very seriously, and
wouldn't allow myself to be goaded into a "duel of honor."

I now ask you, Jona, how were the honor duels in the past done? What were they fought for? Today it's used as a weapon to get someone to apologize, or to do something they normally wouldn't do. It's not honor, Jona. It's fake, and most would probably only do it at that point because they'd be tarred and feathered for going against the word of honor.

Along with having fun with Cas, Jona, I also wanted to make the statement that I won't be blackmailed to duel in a different way just because my opponent doesn't like it. If Cas wanted to leave the ring, I would have taken the tie, because I wasn't aiming to take a cheap win. I was having fun in that duel, because I wanted to tell myself there is nothing to worry about.

Again, if you don't like it, I'm sorry, but I'm not here to make you like me, Jona. I am merely speaking what I think is right, and I do what I think is right. You know me well enough to know I care for the sport.
