Baron's Council - Avery vs. Drey
From: quickvarmg@aol.com (QuickVarMG)
Date: 28 May 2000 08:56:30 EDT
To the Duel of Swords community,
This morning I wrote to the Council regarding Avery Shiv Blade and Drey D'erest Sanchez Starke. Because part of the letter contained a response towards a baron who wrote to the council alone, I am not going to tack up the letter word for word. However, I shall tack up pieces of the note so you may see the basic idea behind the letter.
~~~~~
To the Council of Barons,
With Valentine Evermeadow allowing the Council to convene, it is now our duty, as Barons of the Duel of Swords, to justly decide upon the matter concerning Avery Shiv Blade for his failure to abide by the Universal Terms of Challenge. While I do not feel any of you would go beyond and try to use your privilege unjustly, I would like to remind you that we are voting on what has transpired with the challenge, and that alone.
I am sure Valentine would not expect us to come to an official decision by the Warlord's Tourney, which, to my understanding, begins tomorrow. However, there should be a set deadline for this matter. The Council has until Wednesday at midnight, so then the decision may be posted on Thursday's standings.
On to the actual voting. My ideas for the vote aren't necessarily the only solutions (after all, I could have forgotten to add one).
1. Avery and Drey be granted more time to schedule a rematch
2. Avery has the title removed from him, and Drey automatically becomes Overlord, giving Avery the thirteenth ring.
3. Avery has the title removed from him, and Drey has to fight a champion in Avery's stead.
3a. Champion: ____________
4. Avery has the title removed from him, Drey gets his right to challenge as Baron back, and we submit to Val we feel a Baron's Tourney should be held to fill in the spot of Overlord.
I am holding my vote until I need to break a tie. I wish the Council the best of luck to come to a decision quickly and justly.
Var Medici-Giovanni
~~~~~
I do admit that while under no circumstances would I ever personally vote on a couple of the options, they are there for the Council to toss around. For example, I never believe someone should get a win automatically due to the opponent failing to show up for the challenge, but I don't think it would be right to tell the council, "You can't vote on that because I don't want Drey to get a free win."
Of course, I do expect some people not to like the options, but I am making the suggestions based on what is feasible for us to grant under the circumstances, not what I like most. If the latter was the case, I'd only put one option up.
Hopefully, that will answer the majority of the questions or comments. Any others are free to be written.

Why not let the Tourney prize winner of the Overlord shot duel the challenger as a champion for the title of Overlord? Of course, this would require the council to make a swift decision, which could be asking a little much..

For the Community's information,
It has been decided by the Baron's Council that Overlord Avery Shiv Blade shall lose his title as Overlord, and a Baron's Tourney be convened to determine the new Overlord. The Baron's Tourney, of course, is to be handled by Val or whoever else Val hands jurisdiction to, so those details aren't available at this time.
Val has been informed of the decision, and I thank the Baron's Council for their swift and just decision, and I hope said decision pleases the community, and the patrons herein.
The voting results will not be posted by me. The individual barons may say their position if they wish.
Furthermore, for the community's reference, I will not partake in the Baron's Tourney. I know I am far from the supreme duelist, and I am happy as a Baron.

It seems most of the Council has decided that the Warlords who gain a ring in the Tournament will not participate in the Baron's Tournament. Personally, I don't care either way. As for the way I voted, I have attached a copy of the letter to the Council below.
As I have already stated, I agree with Cassius' sentiments and I do care for Avery's well being as a friend and a Loyal. But we must have an active Overlord, that is why the Eleventh votes for the removal of Avery Shiv Blade from the mantal of Overlordship. I know that Avery will understand the predicament in which we do this, both as a friend and as a warrior.
As to filling the gap of an Overlordship. I propose a Baron's Tournament. I am highly opposed to finding a Champion. Drey challenged Avery to fight Avery, I doubt he wants a Champion as well. Plus, I doubt any of us has the right to say they can defend the Crown from any of us. I also disagree with the prospect of excluding the Warlord Tournament winners from the Tournament. They are Baron's as well, and who's to say that they are not as noble or as
skilled as the lot of us?

How can you hold Barons out of a Baron's tournament? Whomever wins rings damn well better be in the tournament. What makes any of you better than they?

To the Council,
I would have to strongly agree with Rix and Gunthar. Any holder of a ring should be eligible to compete in the Barons' Tourney. If you attempt to exclude the winners of rings in the WT from the BT, then what do you plan to do? Hold the BT tonightm or tomorrow before any of the Warlords have won rings? If they hold rings when the BT begins, they would have to eligible to compete. Otherwise I think we would all have to seriously question the motives
of the Council.

I'll tell you, Rix.
Have you looked to the Barons lately? Do you see how many idiots are on there?
There's a small chance that someone decent would be crowned Overlord, but the numbers are against that.
Such a shame.

As submitted to Valentine, Drake, Turi, and the Council of Barons:
~~~~~
While I will not participate in the Tourney, I humbly submit a line to Val when it comes to who may participate:
" 2. All 13 Barons are considered equal in title."
That is under the Baron's section in the rules.
All barons are considered equal in title, which means all must be treated equally. If you want to partake in the Baron's Tourney, the newer barons, who earn their rings, shall also have the right to partake in the Baron's Tourney. You are no more special to them where you tell them they cannot duel in the tourney.
I hope Val allows all barons to take part in the tourney, if it is that baron's wish to.
Barons of the Council, Gentles,
I do respectfully request of the Barons that they make known unto the community their individual decisions with respect to the removal of the Overlord, Avery Shiv Blade.
I shall also point out unto the Council, the most interesting and perhaps self serving aspect of its unique and historic decison, that being the Council hast, by its own devices and decision, opened the way for one of its own to assume the title by the apparent expeditious removal of the Overlord.
I, for one, do believe the community shouldst be made aware of each Baron's stance, and do call upon the Barons to stand forth and pronounce their decision publicly.
Respectfully,
Jonalyn Starfare
To what purpose, Jonalyn? So that they can place themselves before certain members of the public for ridicule for doing what they believe to be right? One might argue that if they believe strongly in the rightness of their actions they should be willing to speak out and tell everyone what those actions were, but I ask again... why should anyone intentionally place themselves open to that? While perhaps not stated specifically in the rules, it is
understood that if a title holder is declared in forfeit the matter will be turned over to the Council. It is my understanding that after being given two extensions, Avery has finally been declared in forfeit, and the matter was turned over to the Council. It seems ludicrous, to me at least, to simply give the title of Overlord to Drey because Avery forfeited. Apparently there were not a few on the Council that felt it ludicrous as
well. Traditionally a new Overlord has been determined by a Baron's Tourney. The present Council has elected to follow that tradition and hold a Baron's Tourney to determine who shall be our next Overlord. What, exactly, is so terribly self-serving about following the traditions of the sport?
As representative of the First, I voted that Overlord Shiv Blade be removed from the throne and a Baronial tournament be held to decide his replacement. And, as self serving as such a tournament may appear, it is in my opinion the best course to finding a strong Overlord. But I'd love to hear other suggestions for a possibly better way of determining the next Overlord.
Khrys,
Why shouldn't they each say what they did? I can give you at least one reason why they should . . .
Some members of the community may disagree with one individual Baron's vote, so that member would want to challenge them for their ring.
And who said they would just give the title to Drey? There are other options. Their decision can be viewed as self-serving since they, along with Drey, all have an equal chance to become Overlord even though they did not challenge as Drey did.
I certainly hope each member of the council will tell what they voted. It does have a purpose.
