Tournament of Barons Results

On the evening of June 4, the Barons of the Arena gathered to engage in a tournament to determine the next Overlord. Only five of the thirteen Barons attended and participated in the event. Due to such a low turnout, the tournament was settled via a round-robin style, and was completed in one night's time. Those attending the tournament were as follows:

Baron of the Second - Cletus Ganderfald
Baron of the Eighth - Galin Taelca
Baron of the Ninth - Sartan
Baron of the Eleventh - Daelin Dragonsblade
Baron of the Twelfth - Cassius Maximius

The tournament was settled after four rounds. Each round one Baron did not participate due to an odd number of combatants. The round-by-round results are as follows:

Round One:
Daelin defeats Cletus, 5 - 3 in 7 rounds.
Sartan defeats Galin, 5 - 2 in 7 rounds.
Cassius did not participate in this round.

Standings after Round One:
Cletus (0 - 1) ; Galin (0 - 1) ; Sartan (1 - 0) ; Daelin (1 - 0) ; Cassius (0 - 0)

Round Two:
Cletus defeats Cassius, 5 - 4 in 10 rounds.
Daelin defeats Sartan, 5 - 3 in 10 rounds.
Galin did not participate in this round.

Standings after Round Two:
Cletus (1 - 1) ; Galin (0 - 1) ; Sartan (1 - 1) ; Daelin (2 - 0) ; Cassius (0 - 1)
Round Three:
Cassius defeats Galin, 5 - 2 in 6 rounds.
Sartan defeats Cletus, 5 - 2 in 7 rounds.
Daelin did not participate in this round.

Standings after Round Three:
Cletus (1 - 2) ; Galin (0 - 2) ; Sartan (2 - 1) ; Daelin (2 - 0) ; Cassius (1 - 1)

Round Four:
Daelin defeats Cassius, 5 - 3 in 10 rounds.
Cletus defeats Galin, 5 - 2 in 6 rounds.
Sartan did not participate in this round.

Standings after Round Four:
Cletus (2 - 2) ; Galin (0 - 3) ; Sartan (2 - 1) ; Daelin (3 - 0) ; Cassius (1 - 2)

After the fourth round, the only person that could match Daelin's record was Sartan. Since Daelin defeated Sartan in a duel in the second round, the tournament was halted.
Therefore, the new and Thirty-ninth Overlord of the Arena is Daelin Dragonsblade. Following the tournament, several Barons declared their alignments to the new Overlord. Barons Galin Taelca, Cassius Maximius, and Cletus Ganderfald aligned themselves Loyal. Barons Sartan and Leonardo de Lorenzo aligned themselves Renegade.
The remaining Barons have one week to declare their alignments to Overlord Dragonsblade.

At long last, and for the first time in his involvement in the duels, he passed a blanket judgement:


Fellow Duelists,

This "tournament" was, for lack of a better word, a joke.

I have never spoken so harshly in all my days as a duelist, nor shall I likely ever again have cause to do so.

I stand by that judgement. A duel among five of thirteen to hold the sport's highest honour is a joke. This seems more a fait accompli than anything else -- and, indeed, though I do not have personal issues with any of the five enumerated contestants, I cannot imagine why such a course of action was approved by the overseers of the sport.

I am... Disgusted.

As I understand the situation, Sid...

At least three of the Barons; Deluthan, Dustin and Leonardo; made it clear they would not be involved in the Tourney.
Baron Oakenshield has stated in the past he has no desire to become Overlord, so I would not expect him to be involved.
Barons Unagi and Troyan were informed of the time and place, yet neither dueled nor declared they would not duel.
As for Barons Var and Starke, I believe they also stated that they would not be involved in the Tourney, but I cannot confirm this from the missives delivered to my office in my recent absence.

Master Kurgan:

In defence of the course of action taken by the Supervisor... specifically the holding of a Baron's Tourney with only five participants... I can only suggest you ask the Barons who did not participate why they did not.
It is clear by the Rules that a Tourney was to be held... it is also clear that the Supervisor should not compel the Barons to duel in said Tourney.

Var announced from the very beginning that he would not compete in the Tourney. That is one. According to my information, Dustin and Unagi also informed at least the other Barons that they would not compete in the Tourney. I don't know about Dustin's reasons, and I could be wrong but I believe Unagi was of the opinion that no one but Drey should have a crack at being OL next until Drey had fought someone for the privelege. There is 3. Deluthan
withdrew his name from those in the Tourney after he was one of the individuals drawing harsh criticism during the argument that followed the Council's decisions. That is 4. Knowing what I do of Jesse I imagine that he either didn't have interest in being OL or just didn't bother to make the time to show up. That is 5. Jeff has said loud and clear on more than one occasion that he thinks being Overlord comes at the end of the career and he feels he
has more to accomplish. That makes six. Drey said that he wanted, specifically, to duel Avery, not to be Overlord. That makes seven. I don't know the situation regarding Leo, but I am sure that he had a reason for not competing. That makes 8. 8 from 13 leaves five.
I do have to agree with Lord Kurgan that 5 of 13 Barons does not the most impressive of Tourneys make. However, I do understand why only five Barons dueled in the Tourney. I think, however, that the Tourney could have been handled better. With only five contestants, I would have made it a match tournament with the Barons needing to win 2 of 3 or even 3 of 5 instead of merely 1 of 1 each round.

In conversing with the Neutral Baron of the Third, Unagi Miyamoto, the warrior didst hold that until such time ast Master Starke didst rescind his challenge unto Avery Shiv Blade, that the Tourney of Barons held no merit. Tis also mine understanding that Unagi san didst voice his support for the option of offering a champion to cross blades with Master Starke during the Council's discussions.

In conversing with the Baron of the Fifth, Leonardo Tassadar de Lorenzo, the Baron didst comment that he wouldst hae more experience ast a Baron.

The Baron Dustin didst attend the Tourney, though he didst nae participate, and didst depart afore the event wast finished.

What proves more interesting be that certain Barons what didst desire that a Tourney be held didst choose nae to particpate. Further, and perhaps ast telling ast the dearth of Barons taking part in this momentous event, wast the attendance of so few of the community.

I shall presume, Percy, that thee be merely stating yuir opinions ast to the reasons those barons thee hae named didst nae choose to participate, though if'n thee be stating from personal knowledge the reason that the Renegade Baron of the First, Deluthan E'vrt, wast that he didst draw, to use yuir words, "harsh criticism", one must ponder his backbone and intestinal fortitude. Tis certes ast the may know, the Baron Ev'rt wast adamant that the
matter be turned o'er to the Council ast well ast being among those what didst choose to depose Avery Shiv Blade. T'would seem the Baron didst choose to find a hole in which to hide, neh?

Ast to Master Starke, the Renegade Baron of the Thirteenth was at one time quite adamant that he hae nae desire for the Council to determine his fate. One must then ponder, Percy, if'n ast thee hae stated, t'was merely a desire upon the part of Master Starke to simply duel Avery, whyfore wouldst he hae cast the gauntlet in the form of an official challenge unto him? One canna logically accept the premise that Master Starke held no desire to garner
the title of Overlord, despite his claims to the contrary. Of course, one wouldst be hard pressed to attribute unto Master Starke either intelligence or logic.

Old friend, tis perhaps that the dearth of participants in this travesty be a statement which dost speak most eloquently of the darkness which hast descended upon this once proud and glorious and most ancient of sports.

You know Jona.....maybe Deluthan couldn't make that date. People do have lives outside the rings as Drey has stated several times in the recent past. We all know that in tournaments never is there a time when you can set a date everyone can make. Especially when the tournament was held on such short notice. Now I'm not saying I like the guy. I'm just merely pointing out your conclusion is really not
neccesarily true, nor do you have any proof to back it up. I'd also like to think we hold a "innocent till proven guilty attitude" around here. If not I think that really says something about how low this place has sunk. Then again I could be totally wrong and you could have some kind of inside information as usual or some ten year old record backing your statement. Unfortunately I'm not as resourceful as you.....come to think of it I really
don;t think anyone is....then again that's because no one else revolves there life around this place as much as you do.

First of all, dolt, though tis nae unexpected that thee wouldst display yuir ill breeding, the use of mine diminutive ist reserved unto those what I do hold in esteem ast well ast friend. Thee may rest assured that thou art in neither category nor do I expect thee shall attain either mine esteem or mine friendship.

Further, sir, all the Barons were notified of the pending Tourney ast well ast many among them hae indeed pressed their stance that such a Tourney take place. It is illogical to e'en presume that they wouldst nae expect that the Tourney wouldst take place hard by the conclusion of the Tournament of Warlords.

I am indeed privy to much information, suffice it to say, more than enough to make intelligent comment upon various matters. I am amused, sir, that thee wouldst make comment with respect to an "innocent until proven guilty attitude". Perhaps it hast escaped yuir notice that tis nae a court of law? I shouldst e'en go so far ast to state, sir, that tis verra likely thee hae little but opinion to support your assertions that I may nae be in
possession of what thee hae termed 'proof'.

The only thing sillier than your comments are Lady Starfare's in response, for nothing she mentioned was even relevant.

The simple fact is that Baron Ev'rt made public comment regarding his reasons for declining to participate. "Having a life" was not enumerated among his reasons. For you to offer it as his reasoning when his very own words are present here for all to read is absolutely ludicrous.
