Here's a Better Request
From: dreystarke@aol.com (DreyStarke)
Date: 20 Jun 2000 12:16:24 EDT
I want all you slouching Warlords to get off your arses and challenge someone. PLEASE.
Try and steam an argument with another Baron or something.
I'm sick of watching Var standing up there and never getting a challenge. I'm sure he wants one. You can challenge and still like the guy, so come on, challenge him. Someone please challenge Galin. Let's at least make him LOOK active on his mantle.
Unagi looks pretty bored up there. He even wanted to step in for Avery when I couldn't get my challenge, and I think he is the most skilled duelist up there. He's a real challenge. After ALL those requests Jesse Troyan made, it seems like NOBODY wants to challenge him. He's supposed to be some kind of cocky bastard that thinks he can beat any of you. Why doesn't anybody challenge him? He certainly is more skilled than most of you, but I know for a
fact he couldn't handle a good sum of you. Challenge Cletus, he's almost in his death bed right now. He's certainly not in the right condition to stand as Baron.
I know way back, long ago there were challenges almost every week. We're lucky if we get a few a cycle, now. I know Rix has his eyes set on me, and boy, I am waiting for his missive. It looks like Rix, Lupton, Lucian, that nameless guy, Percival, and Zenith are seeking peer wins. That may seem like a lot, but it isn't much at all. I don't want to come off as some insane idiot in this post, but I'm afraid it's too late... Oh well.
CHALLENGE SOMEONE. Every Baron should welcome a challenge, and if they don't, then they deserve to be challenged. And for the love, challenge Var. Please.

I personally find it in poor taste to tell people who they should challenge. If anything, it's insulting to the warlord by trying to make up his or her mind for him/her, when someone thinks the warlord doesn't know who to challenge.
However, I guess telling people who to challenge is the "in" thing now. Kind of like when a baron claiming loyalty and friendship to Avery told a Warlord that Avery needs to be challenged.
It also reminds me of Valentine telling any warlord to challenge because we treated him oh so poorly. Apparently warlords are just pawns and mindless drones people like to use to get what they want.
I know many are just dying to say "but you declared renegade to Avery, so you're just a hypocrite." Oh well. My alignment change in accordance to what happened with Avery, in my opinion, holds no bearing on the fact that I would claim to be Avery's friend yet at the same time tell someone that "my friend" needs to be challenged.
"Hey everyone, challenge Drey! He's this and that, plus he also does this!" I feel kind of lousy just writing that in jest.

Well, both Drey and Var have good points. Before I left a few months ago there was a challenge going on at least once a week...and I remeber when I took the 6th ring back in December that there were around 4 challenges plus mine.
Drey, even though the entire community wishes to hear opinions and such telling people that they should challenge just because a great baron has held a ring unchallenged for a year is plan wrong in my eyes. When I challenged Simini for the 6th most everyone including yourself told me that I was a moron for doing it because she was a good Baroness. So why now are you hammering to have others challenge a good Baron?
Var, you turned renagade against Avery for whatever reasons that you thought were apporiate. You and I are friends and former teammates but I would challenge you in less than a second if I didn't agree with your actions in your postion of leadership in the community. When someone takes a Baronial Ring or the Crown they take on a responsability to the community and while baron they must do whatever possible to help raise the standards of that
community, even if it means removing your best friend, brother, or even mother if that was the case.
These are just my thoughts and I mean no disrespect or insult to either of you.

I'm not directly telling a certain warlord, "Hey! Challenge him!" I'm simply implying that some Baron's need a challenge.
> "Hey everyone, challenge Drey! He's this and that, plus he also does
>this!"
I never said that you were a bad person, Var. I said you can challenge a Baron even if you like the guy. A main reason for me becoming a Baron was just for the challenge matches in general. I welcome them. Please, challenge me.
People like Cassius keep telling me people hate me and want me off the council. That I'm just making myself a target for challenges. Good, I don't want to come off as some guy that would act like a goody-goody just so he can dodge a challenge match. I don't take any offense to people challenging me like some others, mainly because I welcome a good challenge; especially from someone keenly adept and far more experienced such as Rix.
"So why now are you hammering to have others challenge a good Baron?"
It was a mistake of mine if I called you a moron for challenging Simini. I see it now; I was way off course, then.
However, I wasn't pointing fingers just at Var. I pointed at a lot of Barons. They just stand there. So what if they are a good Baron? Make them work for their stance and fight to keep it.

Looking at the current Barons I can think of at least 3 that shouldn't hold the ring in my opinion and when I gain the peers I will most likely challenge one of them. I welcomed challenges as well and the fact that I beat Simini is what made me a whole lot of enemies...but none of them challenged me....It took ::shudders:: Damien to do it 4 months after I gained the title. I will go ahead and say that I know how you
feel Drey...When I regain a ring I want people to challenge me as well....All in all those 4 months were kinda boring...No Baron Council Decision or challenges. ::shrugs:: It comes with the territory. When the warlords gain the courage and the peers they will challenge whoever they feel is right.

Someone told me this guy was dead..I hope he didn't just come back to life. Random resurrection just kind of annoy me.
Oh, and Drey, sorry to dissapoint, but I'm far from on my death bed. You can come and try to finish the job if you want though, but then again, I don't want to have to be the one to clean up the bloody mess when I finish with you. Of course, you probably don't have the balls to back up what you said anyway.

Whatever you think I said, you're obviously confused. Next time actually read the material before you say anything.

The problem around here is that people always have an opinion, guys.
My philosophy is that if you don't have something worthwhile to say, or you can't do anything about it..(yes, and that does mean sending your cliche of Warlords out to "depose" a Baron) then just shut up, because chances are, the majority of the Community doesn't want to listen to you.
Words are just about worthless. I've learned that now, actions speak louder. Sure you can get praises all day from people in the Arena if you say your going to do something like...I don't know, remove Dr. Drey from the Council. People like that, in my mind are weak. Trying to remove someone who has zero popularity with the "in-crowd" of the Arena so you can get cool points is overrated.
People are going to hate me for this though, but I actually see what Dr. Drey is talking about and I kind of like it. At least he's going to get off his arse and *do* something, even though it is for himself. Something most of you so-called important people in the Arena will never do..step into the fire once in awhile.
Have a nice day.

Daelin Dragonsblade,
The eve thou didst garner the mantle, sirrah, I offered unto thee a comment. Dost recall it, sirrah? Let me restate it. The burden of the mantle ist heavy, some bear it lightly upon strong shoulders, standing proud, head held high in the face of adversity. Some bow under the weight, all but falling to their knees, unable to bear the burden.
Sir, though thee perhaps believe that only thine deeds shall show thee to be worthy of that burden, thou art sadly mistaken. If thou truly be so shallow ast to believe that one needs must hae the adoration of the masses to be thought worthy of title, thou art ast well sadly mistaken. If thee believe that only thine prowess with thine blade be thine true measure, thou art also sadly mistaken.
The last to hold the mantle that didst so stridently wail unto the heavens that he wast nae well thought of wast Agrenish Preescot. Before that, t'was Gnimish Gnimoi. Both retired under the weight of the burden. Be wary, sir, for thine steps may find thee upon that same path.
How verra quickly thou hast succumbed, Daelin, and fallen away from thine stated desire to restore unto this ancient sport some semblance of honor, a stance thee didst declaim upon thine ascension. A true pity, Daelin, for tis becoming further apparent, that thee sought only the title and ne'er gave anna thought atall to what actually bearing that ancient title wouldst mean.
If'n thee desire praises, Daelin, for what wouldst thee wish to be praised? Or dost merely desire to hae praise offered unto thee so that thee may feel thine self to be among what thee hae termed, "so called important people"? Who be these 'important' people, Daelin, that thou hast disparaged?
Bewail nae thine Fate, Daelin Dragonsblade, for thee didst rush unheeding and hae come face to face with its fierce and awesome aspect. Search within thineslf Daelin Dragonsblade, for only there shall thee find the strength to truly look thine Fate in the eye. Thou shalt nae find it among those what wouldst cozen thee with honeyed words and hollow shouts of praise, sir.
Hae thee the strength to map thine course, Daelin, then follow boldly upon it? So far, sir, thine footsteps falter. The winds do rise, Daelin, thou mayest either turn thine back and crouch, shivering before them, or thou may stand, head held high and march defiantly into the teeth of the gale.

She's right. Being well thought of doesn't mean a damn thing.
I was a generally well-liked overlord, had a large loyal percentage, no openly hostile renegades, and, I think, a fair number of people who wanted to see me succeed.
Three weeks later, I was another forgotten chapter in the history of those who had come and gone.
Other, greater overlords had more enemies than I did. Greatness is not always recognized in its own time. Mass approval only shows an ability to easily conform to public opinion. Those are not the deeds that make one great.

::The Dragonian reads the words on the cork with a sharp eye, nodding slowly::
I remember that well, Lady Starfare. As you have said, this is not a Title..it's a burden, a hard one at that.
I was not saying I wanted to be praised, it would be nice, yes..but that's not what I want to do. I also want to apologize to people I have hurt by saying that I actually *agree* with Drey. That may sound ridiculous but I know of one person whom by me saying that is really disturbed, and I am wholly sorry for saying those words.
I don't want praise, yes it would be nice, but praise without a purpose is worthless..that was the gist of my whole argument.
Lastly, I would like to thank you Lady Starfare. Your words actually placed some more balance within myself. It also restored some faith in my conscience. You've helped me once again more than you can realize.
