Lost & Found

Maetel was frightened. Not that she would admit it, not even to herself, but she was frightened. As she crouched in the alleyway across from the large Inn, her few and scattered memories came to the fore.

She had grown up in a rather unusual boarding house run by a kindly older woman. The boarding house was unusual in that it was probably the only place that would take in someone like Maetel, much less any of the other odd orphans that grew up there.
Her memories of before the boarding house were vague, often filled with pain, anger and fear in equal amounts.
The feline-girl knew she was different from the other children but it didn't take long to discover just how different. Not just her fur, or her tail, Maetel and the others noticed fairly quickly that she was growing up much faster than they were. Miss Chandles, the surrogate mother to them all, just explained that, like a cat, Maetel would grow up faster than the other children. Still, there were other worries.
Sometimes, odd things or words would trigger the feline-girl's fear, and more rarely, her anger. After the time she had seriously wounded a young elven lad, she was very careful to only play with the sturdier children, and learned to get away from the others quickly when she was becoming angry.
All might have been well, if not for the attack just a few nights ago...

A drunk staggered out of the Inn, crossing the road and heading right for the alleyway Maetel was crouched. But her rumbling growl was enough to sober the man up enough to decide on a different way home. As the door to the Inn opened again and a young couple staggered out, Maetel's memories intruded once more.It was very late, and everyone in the boarding house was soundly sleeping, though there rest was soon to be shattered.A troop of five men, all in the latest high-tech battle gear, approached the house. One of them tapped his multi-scanner and pointed to the second floor. "Target's up there men. Make as much mess as you want, just get it alive."As four of them ran towards the house, a fifth paused and fired a grenade into a random window on the third floor, instantly filling the room with tear gas.In moments, the entire house was chaos... The second man had paused in the yard and was spraying the right side of the house with his flame-thrower, laughing maniacally. The troop's leader and the other two adjusted their oxygen masks and ran inside, heading for the stairs as the grenadier lanched another tear gas grenade into the third floor.Maetel woke with a start, her body already reacting overtime to the sounds of fright and battle. She raced out into the main hall just in time to see Miss Chandles knocked down the stairs by one of the soldiers."That's her!" shouted another, raising his tranq-rifle and firing. But the cat-girl was already in motion... having genetically modified her to be the perfect killing machine, Maetel's creators had sent these men, not to capture her, but to test her.As the spray of tranq-darts began to fill the hall, Maetel crashed through a door, then leapt to the ceiling as another spray of darts came into the room. The cries of the frightened children enraging her, she tore apart the wall panelling between herself and the soldiers, leaping down on them from surprise. In moments, two of the soldiers were dead and the third was running down the stairs for the front door, screaming in terror. Maetel bounded after leaping from the top of the stairs to narrowly miss the fleeing man at the doorway."She's in the doorway!" Yelled the soldier. "Burn her before she kills all of us."Just as Maetel was rising from her crouch, the soldier with the flame-thower fired upon the main door...( To be continued. )

A strong wind came up from the harbor, bringing with it the unmistakable smells that all fishing harbors seemed to share. At the other end of the alley, a pair of huge dogs, left-overs from one of the old guilds maybe, began slinking towards the cat-woman. Maetel's attention was only on the door to the Inn across the way, the sounds of revelry faint through the thick wood, reminding her of the yells of that night not so long ago.Fire bathed the entrance to the boarding house, obscuring the three soldier's sight of the cat-woman in the doorway. "You idiots!" Yelled the man with the grenade launcher. "We were supposed to take her alive!"In seconds though, it was obvious that she was alive, for a dark shape was already halfway across the yard, Maetel having leapt to the side before the flames reached her. The cowardly soldier screamed just as Maetel sprang for the man with the flame thrower, ripping through his heavy flak jacket like it was tissue. Another moment, and she leapt from his already dying body towards the fleeing soldier."Good lord!" The soldier with the grenade launcher could only stare in horror at the terrible distruction that Maetel had wrought upon his partner, snapping out of his daze when the fleeing soldier's screams were cut off by the cat-woman's claws. Whirling, he turned and fired the grenade launcher just as she sprang at him, catching her directly in the shoulder with the heavy projectile, spinning her to the ground. As the tear gas began spreading over the yard, he slowly approached the still form of the cat-woman. "Looks like I got you..."( To be continued. )

The two hounds were more than ordinary beasts. Modified by anceint sorceries, they were swift and powerful. Created to be loyal to the callous men who cast them aside when their purpose was fulfilled. Left to their own devices, they prowled in packs of two or three, preying on the unfortunate few that crossed their paths. The smells from the wharf
dulled their senses, but ahead was prey, this they knew. Close enough now, the larger of the two hounds leapt at the all too unaware cat-woman, drowning in her memories...

As the last surviving soldier approached Maetel's semi-concious form, a trio of children ran out of the spreading tear-gas. Two elven lads grabbed at his arms, while a sturdy dwarven boy wrapped an arm around each of is legs.
"Keep ahold of him Gurthad!" yelled one of the elves. "I think Maetel is almost awake!"
Panicked, the soldier flailed about, knocking the two away from his arms, allowing him to bring his grenade launcher to bear upon the still-groggy cat-girl.
But Gurthad still held on. And, with a sudden yank, he upended the soldier knocking him to the ground, the grenade launcher flying from his hands.
