He had sent his demands, having considered the fact that Val may revolt against him, though the reply given was much more than he anticipated, he was angered, enraged even. He read over the reply one last time, before sending his last set, ludicrous demands that he know would never be met.

Evermeadow's reply

Peasant McConahue,

As you well know, I have to suffer fools and imbeciles almost on a daily basis thanks to my work in the arena. I must admit, however, that I've gotten the biggest laugh out of the drivel you have so recently sent my way. For that I thank you for the amusement.

With respect to your demands, I offer my own counter-demands. Please peruse them and then make your own decision.

I have already been considering the merits of instituting a gambling ring. If it is indeed done so, the provision will be put in place that all bets made by you or your associates will be destined to fail, no matter what the outcome of the match in question.

Instead of a statue of yourself to be placed in one of the arena's rings, I shall place your severed head on the end of a pike. Rather than confine it to the outskirts of the ring, I shall instead place it in the direct center, in order to honor your greatness more.

There will be no sum of gold deposited under any bank account. Instead, there will be a bounty placed on your head unless the item in your possession is returned. Mind you, that is simply your head, I have no use for the rest of your putrid bones. This bounty shall be tacked to the public boards within a day's time.

You have twenty-four hours, you miserable cur, to either return the Baron's ring or start running. And when you do place your tail between your legs, make sure you find the darkest hole to crawl into or the smallest rock to hide under, for the hunt will not stop until your blood is on my hands, one way or another.

Fondly,
Val Evermeadow

((Collaborative effort by myself and BlkPanther.))

Janella's refusal to obey orders was one of the problems she had during her short time fighting in the Dark Queen's army. Although she had abandoned the army for a different reason, inevitably, if she had stayed, her spiteful stubborness would've no doubt landed her in just as much trouble with the commanders as her other transgressions had. Janella wasn't thinking about those days now, however. She thought of Jesse's words as he had left the
park, his demand that she report either with the ring or without to his place within an hour. She had no intentions of going there, of seeing him, of touching him or listening to him brag about defeating her for the Diamond. Their relationship, or whatever it was that had developed between them, was based on greed, rivalry and waning lust. Such ties were transient; Janella, at this point, considered her campaign in that regard as over.<FONT

He figured the tournament would be finished by now, so he went directly back to the Inn. Coming in through the courtyard, Panth looked up to see Janella's window still dark. "Hmm, she's not here yet, guess I'll have to let myself in, " he thought. A flex of his fingers, his claws extending, gave him an easy grip on the log walls of the Inn. Arriving below her window, he reached up and tripped a
release.

She scratched roughly at her cuts and cursed her ripped and dirty clothes while stalking towards the Red Dragon Inn. The street was fairly dark, the town's lamps glowing softly, casting whitish-yellow light only a few feet in either direction of their posts. She barged into the Inn's common room, ignoring the clerk's call for her messages. Janella had only one priority at the moment, and the key to it was almost
certainly waiting for her upstairs.

The window sprang open and he slipped inside, tugging it closed behind him. Panth barely had time to light the lamp on the desk and take a seat when he heard - and sensed - Janella outside the door. He knew she was pausing, as she always did, to see if the door had been tampered with. He crossed his legs under him just as it swung open.

Janella crossed the familiar hall, drew to a halt before the door to her rented quarters. Satisfied with the lock, she opened it and stepped into the room, pushing the door closed. She was not alone, a shadowed figure was seated on the side of her bed. Janella pulled her gloves off, tossing them to the floor, cursed, and hissed, "I lost!"

He was never quite sure if she actually knew he was there before the door even opened, or, if she just expected him to be there when she came in. Maybe she was just that good at masking her reactions. Most likely, it was a combination of all three.

Panther watched her, couldn't help but swallow, at a sudden loss for words when Janella turned, slipped off her hood and then her torn, crimson bandeau a second later. She flopped down on the bed across from him and calmly extended her legs, unlacing her boots. Meanwhile, she told him about her fights, and finally how the quest had narrowed down to her against Jesse. "He can rot in the bloody Abyss, "
she muttered, and slid her ripped pants off. Bare, Janella's tanned skin lacked its normal, healthy glow. Her muscles and curves were still there, naturally, but the warrioress was marked with blood, sweat, scratches and black and blue bruises. Panth's eyes and mind started wandering, but his excitement changed to genuine concern as the realization of such injury brought him back to the present. He reached for her, but she jumped up and hurried
to the next room. "Damnit, I'll be fine, " she snorted.

She chided him away, but he knew she must certainly be hurting and sore. Not all of that damage was earned in the rings... odds are she had entered the Diamond Quest suffering from most of it already. There was definitely going to be some payback for this one.

The faucet sounded, water splashing in the porcelein tub. Panth's ears picked up nearly every one of her moves, her feet stepping gingerly on the tiles then into the bath, the towel shaken, her small sigh as she squeezed a sponge over her body. It was too much to resist. He stood up, sneaking to the doorway, peeked around the bend and whistled. Janella's eyes caught his, but she didn't stop, though
she dropped the sponge and gathered her hair back behind her neck, offering him a complete view, her mood obviously improving.

"I should tell you what I found... " Panther stole towards her slowly, keeping his voice serious. Janella drew an impish smile, leaning forward, pulling him close and exuding heat, pressing her wet skin into his arms. "They're at the Jack Pot Inn, Janella...."

To his amazement, she merely grinned and nodded. Did she already know that? He looked curious, then gave a low growl of surprise and started backwards when Janella suddenly pushed a sponge down his back. He tried to grab her waist, but she held up a finger and shook her head, her gaze intense. She then stepped deliberately up to him, at the edge of the tub, her body against his again, he could taste her breath, felt her heart beating against his
chest.

"We have enough time... " Janella traced his mouth, initiated the second offence with a predatory smile. "Give me a drill before we start the run through."

((This is a little catching up, and should be considered as past events.))

"It's time to go, " Janella breathed in Panther's ear and rose from the bed. Panther did the same, watching curiously as Janella went to her closet and drew forth a black leather shirt, pulling it on over her dark pants.

Panther readied to leave as well, and it wasn't long before they were on their way through the streets to the Jack Pot Inn. It was hours yet until daybreak, but neither of them expected to take nearly as long as that.

They didn't. Stealing back to the Red Dragon that morning, Janella and Panther exchanged few words.

Bargos' three hirelings, the ones who had taken the baron's ring from Janella earlier that night, were dead now, but despite a thorough search, the ring itself wasn't found with them.

Obviously, Bargos and his little trio had rendezvoused already, so, Janella's vengeance at the Jack Pot was bittersweet.

It was time to take care of Bargos himself, and Janella knew exactly how she was going to do it.
