Dear Taylara and Ellisa Morgan,
I have had the honor of seeing both of you do battle against your opponents in the rings of the Arena. I would llike to take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to both of you. I do anticipate a good hard fought battle. Again, Good Luck and Good Dueling.

What exactly is wrong with "two-stepping", anyway?

To the Duel of Swords community,
I thank those that have offered support, and anticipate a series of interesting duels to occur sometime around three weeks from today.
Deluthan,
I have misjudged your character, a mistake I shall endeavor not to allow again.
Succinctly,
Ellisa Morgan

I am curious, Ellisa, as to your sudden desire to dethrone Taylara, because, to be quite frank, the community deserves a reason. Only a couple weeks ago you were challenging for your ring, against a baron you appeared to have no problem with except for his stance, which had just switched to loyal. I personally find such indifference to a chosen baron to be a bit of an insult to the title. Now, if your intention was to
discard your ring by defeating Taylara as soon as she defended against Drey, that is a larger insult to the title, one that could have been avoided with five more peer victories. On the other hand, if you had every intention of remaining a baroness, you must have a good reason for challenging, and since you plan on representing the community as its top dueler, it's time to learn to share.
But here's the real kicker: you came out of retirement less than two months ago. In that time you, quite obviously, challenged as soon as you filled your peer win list, challenged as soon as you could for Overlord. What does that tell me? You're trying to get yours as soon as you can. I don't care how popular you are; it does not justify such self-serving behavior. I don't care how long ago you were dueling here; when you take time away from
this place, you lose touch--something I know from experience. Within a cycle, it can have a brand-new atmosphere with which you must acquaint yourself like any newcomer.
To those of you whom I have agitated on the subject, I can understand how friendship can cloud one's vision. You might take a tip from Drey and my relationship, a friendship between two people who in the political spectrum are on opposite sides of the fence, and stay out of each other's business within. And if that doesn't please you, by mailbox is open and empty. Just don't bore me with empty threats; words have lost enough meaning around here.
Your Baron of the First,
Deluthan Ev'rt

Deluthan,
I do hope that this is not in reference to me, although I have little hope that it does not as your most recent post has strengthened my recently changed viewpoint on your personality. I have made no threats, nor do I intend to, empty or otherwise.
As for whether or not I intended to challenge for Overlord, no I had not until Drey's challenge failed, and after having spoken to several confidants.
I would address other aspects of your concerns, however I will not mire myself in a mud-slinging war. You have no idea what I am like, and you apparently have no intention of doing so in a courteous manner, so henceforth your words shall go unread.

Well, I believe Deluthan does have a point. Basically, he's just asking for her reason and nothing else. That's what I'm seeing, but hell, maybe I'm blind.
What's wrong with asking for a reason? If people are going to jump the gun and assume he's trying to belittle Ellisa with his MINOR suspicion, then I hope you find the nearest pile of horse manure and eat up. I don't see how anyone could possibly take offense.
Sidartha and Elijah are just ridiculous. It's no use regarding them.

While I have been rather quiet on the matter, I can see where Deluthan would think that Ellisa was two stepping. After all, unless one specifically asks, what else can one expect when Ellisa challenges for Overlord title as soon as Taylara is someone who can be challenged?
Honestly, it's what I felt was the case. If this insults Ellisa or anyone else, I can't do much about that.
Zen asked what is wrong with two stepping... I personally don't agree with the practice (after all, Drey did it as well). Why challenge for the baronial ring when all you wanted was Overlord title? Why take a title you do not want? This is one reason I have not partaken in the last two baron's tournies - not only do I feel that I'm far from the "supreme dueler," but I also have no inclination to hold a title I do not want.
Back onto the original point I was making: I respect Ellisa as a person and a duelist, but when I see someone challenge for the overlord right after winning a baronial rank, I see it as two stepping. If that makes me so evil because Ellisa is the friend of people here, too bad. I make my own judgments.

The old soldier stroked his freshly-shaven chin thoughtfully as he regarded the willful Baron's heady statement of position... Baron Ev'rt clearly believed every word he said, and just so Bishop felt compelled to respond.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Baron Ev'rt,
I find your words ill-considered, perhaps even insulting.
Do you believe that the individual must adapt him- or herself to the sport, rather than seek to adapt the sport to his or her own standards of dignity and honour?
You imply as much when you suggest that "losing touch" with the sport entails being away when the atmosphere changes, becomes "brand-new," and requires each duelist to acquaint him- or herself with it "like any newcomer."
Becoming reacquainted with a sport that has changed somewhat over time does not require one to change oneself or one's standards.
"Like any newcomer," acquainting oneself with an atmosphere of mean-spiritedness, inanity and poor sportsmanship does not require one sixth of a year.
If you believe that Captain Morgan is unworthy of the title of Overlordship, I am confident that you shall present your services to the Overlord as her Champion.
Since you do not care how long ago a duelist competed in our sport, nor by association perhaps how long a duelist has competed in toto or what skill they have demonstrated time and time again, I shall not seek to sway you with anecdotes from my own, admittedly outdated, experience.
I will say this, sir:
Your inability to grasp Ellisa's reasons for challenging is either bait to engage in a debate that does not involve steel, or the mark of purest and most startling naivete.
Captain Morgan challenged a Baron when he declared Loyalty to the Crown, and removed that Loyal blade from the Overlord's coterie. She interceded quite decisively on behalf of a Renegade Baron during the last challenge to the Overlord, and opened a clear path for him to duel the Overlord rather than her Champion.
Ellisa has demonstrated what would seem to be at least a passing opposition to the present holder of the Crown, would you not say?
Might one not guess that the failure of one Renegade Baron has encouraged another to finish the job that the first began?
I do not know the above for a fact, Baron Ev'rt, but that would be my "out of touch" analysis from what little I've learned. I have not discussed this matter with Captain Morgan, but please be assured that I shall make a point of doing so at her earliest convenience.
With all respect,
Fandral Kurgan
Touching all bases:
I've yet to hear a convincing argument as to why "two-stepping" is a bad practice besides "I don't think people should." I can't be convinced with, or debate, vague, indefensible (not as in wrong-headed, as in being unable to come up with a logical, sturdy defense for them) positions.
Var: Why not take a title you don't plan to hold long? There are plenty of reasons, including a desire to remove said baron. Not to mention, one has to be willing to go through two challenge matches in order to secure the Overlord title this way, a feat more daunting than the extra five peer wins.
In closing, it appears to me that Mr. Ev'rt is of the mind that one must delay personal goals for vague, unspecified reasons.
You know...
I heard in this that "The community deserves to hear a reason."
I'm hear to tell you that No. The community does not need to hear a reason as to why a challenge is pressed.
All the community *deserves* is to hear that challenge is being pressed.
A persons reasons are their own, noone elses. And to say the community has a right to hear those reasons is just plain rediculous.
If one *chooses* to divulge the reasons to the community, then that's their choice. But there is no way that the community automatically has that right.
It surprises me not that it's Deluthan who made that claim. Just more of an example of unworthy Barons in these halls.
