Defense of the Second
From: hostdfcval@aol.com (HOST DFC Val)
Date: 26 Jul 2000 00:20:24 EDT
On the evening of July 23, Warlord Zen pressed his challenge to Baroness Ariadne Angeles for possession of the Second Baron's Ring.
Zen stood alone for the evening, although Baron Sartan was seen in his corner throughout the night.
Baroness Angeles dueled as a retainer for the House of Miyamoto. Her colors were white cherry blossom on a sky blue field. Daryl Kyle stood as her second, while Kaji Mitsuhiro was her Lord of Honor.
Before the match would begin, Overlord Tyree stepped forward on behalf of her Loyal Baroness. In turn, Renegade Baron Sartan intervened on behalf of Zen. The two met in the ring to decide whether or not the challenge would proceed.
Taylara was able to notch the first hit, only to have Sartan counter with quick movements and a direct assault to take an early lead. The Baron's defense wasn't able to hold against the Overlord's attack, and the match was knotted at two points each after only five rounds of action. An exchange of slicing cuts inched both closer to a victory, but Sartan struck soon afterwards when nimble movement put him in good position for an open strike.
Taylara wasn't able to fend him off much longer, and lost the match after her attempted movements brought her right in the path of Sartan's blade. With a five to three victory after nine rounds, Sartan cleared the way for Zen's challenge to Ariadne.
Zen began his match with furious attacks, connecting with two consecutive assaults to take a swift lead. Ariadne would strike back with a low attack, only to find herself directly speared by Zen's weapon in the following exchange, which raised the margin to three points to one after the fourth round. Zen would be unable to do any more than that, as Ariadne shifted into a rhythm that fluctuated from offensive to defensive tactics. Zen's attacks
were either deflected or missed their mark, but three blows from Ariadne hit cleanly in the final five rounds to give her the victory after nine rounds of dueling with a similar five to three score.
Thus, Ariadne Angeles successfully defended the Second Baron's Ring against her challenger, Zen.

I heard tell that the Baroness requested the Overlord *not* step in. Yet the Overlord intervened anyway.
Is that right? Is there truth to the fact that the Overlord did not concede to the wishes of her loyal Baroness?
Please inform me.

First, I wish to hear no consolations about the match.
Second, I wish to thank the Baroness for expediting this challenge.
And third, you are correct in what you hear, G'nort. In her attempt to appear sanctimonious, though, the Overlord claimed to do it because "(she was) sure Zen brought plenty of Renegade barons ready to fight tonight, and (she didn't) want to disappoint them and not provide them a match."
As an Earth saying goes: If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

I am a supporter of the Test and of it's cousin, the Intercession, and have proven so in my career through both word and deed. But neither will I blindly condone flagrant abuses of the mechanism. It is ultimately the Overlord's right to Intercede or not, but in that decision, the wishes of the Loyal Baron or Baroness should come first. Taylara callously threw the wishes of her Loyal to the side out of her own search for glory and her own wish to
prevent Zen from getting into challengable position; it was well known that Zen sought the crown. And because of this, Ariadne's desire to fight her challenge match was disregarded so that the spotlight could shine on Tay.
In my belief, the Intercession should be utilized with the blessing of the Baron being challenged, and when personality, circumstance, or a mixture of both make the challenger a threat to the integrity and honor
of the title being challenged for. This test was done for pure selfishness on the part of the Overlord, and with total disregard for the Baroness's request for no intercession. I cannot support an Overlord would so blatantly disrespect her Loyal's wishes.
Taylara offered to test Ellisa on my behalf. I refused. Had she done this very same thing to me, I would have there and then realigned to Renegade(and on the subject, I will now admit my realignment to Loyal was a mistake, based on the evidence). Mayhaps Ariadne should have done the same.
Taylara, I still like you as a person, but good people don't neccessarily make good Overlords. If you cannot consider the wishes of your Loyals, then mayhaps you should step down.

Baroness Ariadne Angeles,
I would implore you to change your alignment to the current holder of the crown as it is obvious she thinks on her own selfish desires and cares not for the respected wishes of those who chose to be loyal to her. If you desire to claim any creidtability as to being worthy to hold title, you would cast away your loyalty to the one who is currently on a power trip.

Yes, she did, and yes, she is, even cheering her on during the match.
My theory is simply that she lacked the capacity for thought to realize she could have taken such an avenue as to turn Renegade so that her wishes might have been fulfilled.
For those in the Overlord and Baroness' corner, who might accuse me of saying these things because I am a "sore loser", rest assured that I said these same things that night, both before and during the match (and consequently, before I lost). I said them then and I say them now because they are either
A)True, or
B)The result of a logical thought process which formed such an opinion.

Personally, I think the Intercession says more about Ariadne than Taylara.

With all due respect, Sartan, how? From what I understand, Ariadne refused the Intercession, and Taylara went ahead with it anyways. If Ariadne simply accepted the situation and even stood by and cheered Taylara on, all that says is Ariadne is really stupid.

Oh good GOD! What the hell is wrong with you people. If any of you had the same thing happen to you when an OL intervened on your match without your blessing you would be pissed at the OL of course but you aren't going to sit there and hope that they lose. And the only thing that you can do when an OL intercedes is realign to renagade....but that don't matter if the OL is in the ring...I think it was wrong for Tay
to have done that agianst Angel's wishes but i'll be damned if I'm going to sit by and let people critizize her for her mistake when we all have made one. If you want to get to Tay you have to get by me first.

You know...Daryl's missive just made me think of something..if Ariadne had realigned to Renegade on the spot, would the Intercession still be valid? Does anyone know
where the rules stand on that?
...Of course, all working logic and reason would suggest that this would be a moot question, since no OL in their right mind would defend a Baron so adamant about not testing their opponent that they would revoke their loyalty...

Basically, if Ariadne really hadn't wanted the Intercession, she would've realigned. For all anyone knows, Ariadne could've specifically asked Taylara to Test with the pretense that Ariadne didn't want it. Is that very likely? I don't know Ariadne well enough to say, but I still hold firm inn the belief that, ultimately, it's the Baron's choice. If you want the challenge bad enough, you'll get it.

I mdon't know if that is very likely. It is certainly possible. If it is true it would tend to say something about both the Overlord and the Baron. If Ariadne is truly that dishonest, on top of her other flaws, then I would tend to argue that people should line up and give the woman a queue. However, I would also say that if Taylara went along with such a deception that her honesty is not precisely of a very higher step on the scale. Of
course, all this is if a deception really occurred.
If no deception occurred, however, then I would say that the person it says the most about is Taylara. Yes, Ariadne should have been more adamant in her wishes. However, we all know that she isn't exactly the strongest personality. Taylara's decision to intercede against the wishes of one of her Loyal Barons is reprehensible. I don't think that there is any way to excuse her or to claim that this doesn't say something very strongly uncomplimentary
about her.
I hope that this has others among the Renegade Barons and Warlords with the sufficient amount of peer wins lined up to take Taylara down. She had a selfish desire to flex her muscles as Overlord. She used her power simply because she could, with no thought of her responsibility to use her power wisely and ethically. The sooner she is removed the better.
