Busted Bar
Date: 10/26/1998 4:13 PM Central Daylight Time
From: Deuce Mack
A long night of dueling was over. Deuce sat back in his seat and rested, four up and two down in his fights. He grinned, wishing Kai had been there to see him take down the Diamond.. but what a story he could tell about it now. Lo and behold, who should walk into the Outback at that very moment but..
Gnort!
So it wasn't the Goddess of Many Butterflies or some other outrageous figure. But the G-man in the Outback was an odd enough sight. They engaged in some idle conversation while, to their left, right, and other various directions, Maetel bounced around and around. Once a ball was mentioned, however, her ears perked.
"Ball? Who have ball?"
"I gotta ball.." Deuce walked towards the bar, while G made some lewd comment about having multiple versions of what she requested. He stopped quickly once Deuce made note of the way Maetel really wanted a ball to play with, and how she didn't quite understand jokes like that. And how her claws were really sharp.
The tired fighter tossed Maetel the baseball he fished out from under the bar. He had kept it there as a sort of surprise, long distance way to scare off the drunken schmoes that sometimes wandered in. She, however, seemed to have an idea to put it right back where it came from.. and as such, leaped up, caught the ball, and fired it back at the bar.
BOOM.
G just blinked. Deuce, however, was much closer to the exploding bar. Outside of the mild heart attack, however, he was fine- Maetel had good aim. It hit square in the center of the bar. No one was hurt. Less fortunately, the bar now had a large, gaping hole which went clear through to the other side.
The next day, Mr. Ever-So-Important-In-His-Own-Mind Assistant Supervisor went down to the local hardware store, argued with a (supposedly) female dwarf about just what in the hell plywood was, bought some "whacker wood", brought it back to the Outback while questioning just who thought that name up, and nailed it across the hole. He could only hope Rocky and Roll wouldn't get at it.
((Note: Yes, there is a big, gaping, plywood-covered hole in the bar. We're hoping to make it part of the Outback's "charm", at least until the staff can get the thing fixed. And yes, it's normal plywood.. just don't expect the staff to be real happy if it gets kicked through... <eg>))

From the position she was in, sitting just a few feet away from the curled up, sleeping 7 year old, Kai thought she looked almost normal. Chuckling, she stood ever so slowly, as not to waken the child and start things up all over again. She shot a glance to the clock and sighed. It was 3 a.m. The brat had kept her up all night.
Kai sighed and stretched out, knowing Deuce wouldn't be too happy about not seeing her, and yet the feeling was more than mutual. Exiting the small room, she walked down to the Outback for a glass of water and possibly an aspirin or two.
She made her way down the hall silently, only making a noise when she mumbled something upon the sight of her two pups. As usual, they were sprawled out across the steps, seeming to be strategically placed and making it a near impossible task to weave around them. Kai did rather well getting past Roll and the first few steps, but alas, Rocky gave her difficulty while he squirmed about in a dream and Boom, down she went.
Rocky uttered a soft yelp, jumping to his feet and looking down at Kai, who was lying in a jumbled mess on the floor. His instant tail thumping had awoken Roll, and they both covered her in pounces and slobber. More than just a little irritated, she shooed them off with flailing arms. A dull pain shot up her back as she sat up and stretched. She winced and ceased her stretching.
Then she looked to the dogs. Guilt swept over her at the sight of the "angels", ears drooped and eyes big. Grumbling, she pulled to her feet and started towards the bar. "C'mon you two.." The dogs jumped up and trotted at her heals, stopping when Kai bent down to open the cabinet containing the big barrel of doggy treats. Upon receiving one each, the two slinked off and settled down, contentedly chewing at the bones.
Closing the cabinet, Kai stood and did a double take at the gaping hole. "What in the hell....?" She chuckled, shaking her head, not about to worry over it at this time of night but making a mental note to question Deuce in the morning. She fetched her aspirins and a glass of water, easily made her way up the now clear stairs, and walked to the door to Deuce's room. Her free hand reached out for the door knob, wrapping around it, but was
suddenly unable to turn it when a small but terribly irritating voice rang out from down the hall...
"Kaaaiiiiiiii?? "
The exhausted "aunt" sighed, her features drooped and she closed her eyes. She stood in silence for a minute, her hand clutching the doorknob tightly. But all hopes of her niece giving up were diminished when another, identical call was sounded. Kai quietly made her way back to Dacyle's room and paused for a moment. The idea of actually sending her to "G'nort's Playroom" flashed in her mind. She snickered quietly, dismissing the thought quickly.
Once again she dissapeared behind the door, a great feeling of defeat upon her.

Maetel slept soundly in the back room, her ears barely twitching at the clatter Kai was making. She was dreaming, like she always did, and for once they were quiet dreams.Meanwhile, in that large, rather new, black tower near the spaceport, the Director was reading a report. Shall we read over his shoulder? It might be interesting.Sir.After three weeks of observing the Subject, I have noticed a few idiosyncrasies, not only in the Subject's behavior, but in the behavior of the locals.First, I have been able to secure a recording unit in the area known as the Outback to reduce the likelihood of the Subject discovering my observation. The Subject, while easily capable of killing the mercenary I hired, seems to do very poorly at the sporting event held here. After careful study of the tapes, I came to the conclusion that the Subject is holding back. If the Board intends to use the Subject for military missions after capture, I must recommend a full brain-wipe. While this may erase the battle-sim persona, it is the only feasible way to ensure the Subject is capable of carryingout such missions. On the topic of the locals, I have observed an unusual willingness for the locals to accept the Subject into their social order, even to the point of treating the Subject as an equal. If this sort of behavior continues, it may be necessary to reconsider the retrieval of the Subject. In closing, the Subject has been allowed to take up residence in the area known as the Outback. I do not believe this is an attempt to protect the subject from our people, instead it is likely just another instance of the bizarre acceptance of non-humans shown by the locals.John Hastings. The Director doesn't look happy about this. Just look at how hard he pushed that intercom button!"Sally, send a message to the Canoupus Sector. I want Major Green here as soon as possible.""Yes sir."Leaning back in his chair, the Director ponders this latest problem in a seemingly endless series of problems surrounding Subject Seventeen.

Not so silent night
Date: 10/29/1998 2:31 AM Central Daylight Time
From: Maetel Cat
It was late, very late, when Maetel woke from an otherwise sound sleep. She wasn't supposed to be sleeping on the couch, and she knew that, but she always woke up before anyone discovered her, so she was sure it would be okay.Still, something woke her up. Some noise, or some undefinable change in the room around her. Without knowing why, she slinked silently off the couch. Staying low to the ground, she sniffed the air, catching a whiff of.....gun oil, gunpowder, the tang of fear. She grinned, sensitive ears twitching, catching the near-silent footfalls of the three men. Deuce had told her to protect the Outback, and had told her it was okay to 'make dead' any bad men who came in."Motion sensors negative sir, Infra-red also negative." The soldiers weren't taking any chances. They knew full-well what had happened to the first retrieval team, and that had been when the Subject was still maturing. They spoke into radios, their full face helmets keeping any sound from escaping. "Charlie, you check that pit over there. Dave, you check that storeroom. I'll cover you from here."Maetel peered around the couch, then quickly ducked back. The combat personality in the back of her mind knew what the goggles the soldiers were wearing were for, and it was already figuring out how to negate that advantage. Reaching under the couch, she discovered a discarded shoe and grinned.Charlie was scared, wouldn't you be? Rubber bullets and a net gun against a crazed animal that had demolished a much larger attack squad in the past. Still, orders were orders. He was coming up on the couch when he caught a blur of heat flying towards the back room area. "Dave, look out!" Finger already on the trigger, he fired his sub-machine gun at the flying.....shoe?Maetel certainly didn't know what she was doing would be classified as pyrokinesis, but the shoe in her hand heated up quickly. Scurrying to a better position at the side of the couch, she hurled the super-heated shoe at the bar, smacking it into the plywood patch over the hole she had previously made. The muffled thumping of the silenced sub-machine gun was still loud in the quiet Outback, and the spanging of the rubber bullets made even more noise.((Authoress' note: I know a few people live just off the Outback's main room, so feel free to join in.))

His arms wrapped around her waist in the depths of his slumber, holding closer the truest thing to touch his young life. The nightmares had slowly been replaced by dreams of happier times, past and yet to be, with the girl who lay next to him now. Maybe, just maybe, it could include the demonic urchin who never ceased to be a nuisance, belligerent and rebellious in a flurry of copper curls and pleated skirts.
Thududud. Thudududud.
The displaced American's eyes opened slowly, moonlight eerie in giving them a near-glow against the dark tone of his skin. If it wasn't so quiet, he would swear someone else in RhyDin had a gun; a much better one than his, in fact.
Thududud. Thudududud.
The sound was too much to ignore. He made it to RhyDin with a firearm, why not another? But so noiseless.. this was not ghetto material, bringing a silenced.. machine gun?.. into the Outback. His arms routinely flexed as he sat up in bed, twisting to listen more carefully. He dared not move. The average gun-toting maniac rarely had access to anything but the most basic of death-bringing items; whoever it was probably had a purpose. But what?
Maybe they would be lucky. Perhaps a drunken Marine had simply found his way into another "flashlight" and started shooting up the place in frustration. He could wait; better to clean than to die.
Was there anyone that could get hurt? Dacyle was with them. Rocky and Roll would run and hide, if they were even down there. If any rooms were broken into, he'd hear it and be able to act. That covered it.
"Maetel..."
Nearly an exclamation it was, carefully held back in fear. Deuce creeped out from under the warm bedsheets, slinking quietly to the bag at bedside with his chrome. He didn't bother with clothing beyond the shorts already worn. With a friend's neck on the line, decency was the last thought to cross him.
His breathing turned heavy, bare feet padding softly across the bare, and thankfully squeakless, floor. One hand reached for the door, silver hammer cocked back by the other. Carefully, carefully.. the knob clicked back, his turning ever so slow and deliberate. He slid to the floor, sitting.
Footsteps?
On balls of feet he moved, off-hand balancing against the floor as he slipped out the cracked-open door. Darting eyes scanned the upper floor for intruders; hopefully, seeing none meant no one sat in wait for him. The balcony provided enough cover to avoid detection from anyone on the first floor, although at the cost of an inhibited sight range to the same area.
As the dark eyes adjusted to the lack of lighting, he started to make out the shape of a man, then another. Two of them.. similar appearance and careful demeanor suggesting some part of a team. Special Forces in the Outback? He hoped not; gangstas in the ghetto might be warriors, but not trained like a Green Beret. Creeping down the landing, he moved towards the stairs, needing a better look to make any sort of judgement. Mind whirring through
old strategies at a thousand miles an hour, weapon ready, the lover became a soldier again.
He could only pray Kai and Dacyle would stay put.

Awakening from her somber sleep, Kai rolled over and reached out for Deuce with a soft smile on her face. That smile quickly faded as her arms fell from the air and to the bed. She reached out again, pulling at the pillows and covers blindly for a moment before her eyes popped open. She blinked once, then once again, her eyes taking a while to adjust to the darkness. As soon as her vision was restored, she quickly sat up and glanced around
the room.
Moonlight flooded in through a small window, but other than that all was dark. And silent. But wait.. No, not silent. Slender brows furrowed as Kai sat still, listening to the soft thudding that came from down below. The sound was foreign to Kai's ears, so she hadn't a clue of what to make of it. All she knew was that Deuce was out and about in the middle of the night, a fact that stirred the curiosity inside of her, forcing her urge to dig
deeper into the sound over the edge.
One leg slid out from under the soft sheets, followed soon after by another. Kai shivered as she shook off the covers and sat on the end of the bed. The oversized T-shirt she stole from Deuce provided her with little warmth on such a night. She stood and scampered over to the dresser, quickly pulling out a long robe and slipping it around her shoulders. Quickly she made her way out of the room.
Her bare feet slid silently over the threshold and into the hall. Blinking, her eyes yet again had to adjust. The figure of a man, much like Deuce, slipped around the corner of the hallway, moving out to the balcony. A feeling of total unease swept over Kai. She stood there, silent, watching. Just then the soft thudding registered in her mind.
A gun. The firing of a gun. What kind? She had no idea, but she knew it was the sound of a gun. Adrenaline pumping, she hurried down the hall silently. Then she abruptly came to a stop with an audible gasp. There stood Deuce at the stairs, gun in hand, his expression hard and concentrated. Kai froze, her heart racing.
"deuce..?"

A thudding passed over the thin barrier between dreaming and consciousness awakening Dacyle into the dark night. She squinted trying to clear her blurry vision and annoyance filled the sleepy peacful void she had just been awakened out of. "What the...Kai?" She turned to Kai's bed and saw it unnocupied. 'Sheesh' she thought, 'Off with Deuce again, I bet.' She quickly became curious as to what they were up to and she slipped silently out of her rumpled sheets, padding quietly, but not quite stealthfully in her sleepy ignorance, unaware of what was going on downstairs. The dull thudding came again and she listened, now moving with absolute silence. She came to Deuce's room and noticed the door ajar. Pushing it open with a faintly audible squeak she peered in and saw nothing but a rumpled bed. Frowning with confusement she thinks and a whispered word, "deuce?", filled with questioning. She creeps like she saw Maetel do earlier and comes upon the scene of deuce and her aunt. She whispers softly... "What the heck is going on?" She stands adamant, hands on hips and waiting for an answer.

She quickly became curious as to what they were up to and she slipped silently out of her rumpled sheets, padding quietly, but not quite stealthfully in her sleepy ignorance, unaware of what was going on downstairs.

"I've got motion," said Dave into his radio. "Therm-optics say one, no make that three figures at the stairway." Charlie had calmed down a bit and stopped firing, his breath steaming up the visor of his helmet.
"Slide left and use the net-gun, I'll fire a burst into the storeroom door. Charlie, backstep and coverfire on three." The squadleader then tapped his foot once....twice.....and on the third tap they all moved.
Maetel sniffed the air and caught a whiff of.....perfume, sweat, other scents she recognized. Her friends were coming, and she couldn't warn them.....not yet. She lay still, listening to the foot tapping, her combat personality hadn't taken full control yet, but she knew it was a signal.
Dave fired the shotgun like weapon at the top of the stairs, the shell breaking apart into a fine mesh steel web as it flew. The squadleader sprayed the storeroom door with his submachine gun while Charlie fired a spray about chest high across the room.
Now was her chance. Maetel picked up the end of the couch suddenly, flinging it across the room....not at Charlie, but at the squadleader who's back was turned. But doing so exposed her to Charlie, who swung his weapon around and fired.

His eyes widened in horror as he heard footsteps and voices, the prayer gone unanswered. Before he could get a word out, to warn them, tell them to flee, the shotgun blast echoed through the room.
"Get down!" No sooner had the words left his mouth than his hand was on Dacyle's arm, shoving her with as much force as he could at that moment; no sooner had she been pushe out of range than the blasted net opened up, tacks in the mesh snapping into the wall to trap the teens against it.
Kicking and pulling, Deuce tried desperately to free them, muscles tensing fiercely as his hands gripped the net. The lack of leverage made it impossible, though. He could do little but look to young Dacyle for help.

Shots rang out. Deuce yelled. Dacyle flew. In the middle of the utter and complete confusion, Kai squealed as the bullet split and tacks flew everywhere. She yanked her arm back quickly, but not quickly enough, as a sharp tack managed to skim her forearm. Leaving behind a considerably deep scrape, the tack flew into the wall, but not as tightly as the others..
A thin stream of blood trickled down, but fear had seized Kai to the point that pain meant nothing. She tried her hardest to kick and push and tug at the mesh. Her eyes scanned around frantically, feeling suddenly alone and vulnerable. She turned, slowly, to face Dac.
Her eyes pleaded with the young girl, trembling. Seeing Dac turn, eyes wide, and scamper back to the rooms, possibly for help or just to abandon them, Kai let out a sob and turned, clinging onto Deuce, knowing nothing else to do.

As Matt Simon phased into the upstairs Outback room he called home, his only thought was, "This is becoming tiresome." The problem was, there wasn't a damn thing he could do to stop it. He would recharge the integrity of the matrix only to watch it degrade once again. Sometimes once a day, sometimes so often he just stayed imaged to avoid the trouble of transferring data back and forth constantly.
He moved, floated really (due to the condition of the matrix, normal "walking" projections were impossible) over to the stack of machines that kept him alive, the machines he knew would soon fail altogether, and attempted to increase the rate of recharge. This wasn't exactly his favorite form and the sooner he could abandon it, the better.
An hour, perhaps two, he worked, filtering incoming system warnings and messages, cursing that which allowed him to live. So, when the shots rang out somewhere below, and the shouts and cries wormed their way through the walls and into the room, he paid them no mind. Whatever was going on out there wasn't his problem. He needed to save his own skin; everything else was secondary.

Charlie whirled the instant he saw the couch go into motion, spraying the area again with his submachine gun. He caught the target once, twice, three times in the arm and shoulder, then it....leapt.
Maetel managed to keep to her feet despite the impacts, whirling and leaping up to the heavy beams that made up Ring Styx. She scrambled along, her claws digging into the wood, positioning herself for the most cover she could get.
"Two locals secured on the balcony, the third has retreated." came Dave's voice over the radio. "Sargent is down."
"Did you see that thing move?" answered Charlie. "It threw that couch like it was a toy!" He began edging backwards, more nervous than ever.
"I've got a plan." Dave opened the faceplate of his helmet and spoke into the darkness. "Alright creature, I know you can hear me. Come out now, or the people on the balcony get it."
Maetel didn't know what the man meant, but it had to be a bad thing.....bad men only did bad things.

Kai gasped at the words, realizing how serious the situation really was. She looked around once again in hope that Dacyle had gone for help and praying that she was okay. After waiting a few seconds, she knew she could wait no longer and then looked around for a way out..
Her eyes fell upon the loose tack. She knew it would be near impossible to pull it out, despite the fact that it hadn't dug in as far as the others, but she figured they might as well try. Turning around as quietly as possible, she tapped Deuce's arm quickly for his attention and pointed out the tack, her head tilted in the silent question of "Will this work....?"

"Alright creature, I know you can hear me. Come out now, or the people on the balcony get it."
The fight-or-flight response was short-circuiting in the young man's mind. The gun was out of his hands; he could see its chrome gleaming from the miniscule light that invaded the Outback. Were he able to make it so, the instinct to grab Kai and bolt for their room would be playing itself out right now at high speed.
Deuce's dark features twisted into a sharp grimace as he turned his head towards Kai, dragging the side of his face along the taut net. Squinting in the darkness, the shadow of her head in motion was hazily apparent.
"What is it.." His voice was kept to the lowest of whispers. While it appeared as though she was trying to point something out, he was clueless as to just what that might be. As the overwhelming helplessness began to sink in, young Deuce continued his futile tearing at the mesh.

Maetel's sharp hearing could pick out Deuce and Kai's attempts to escape, she also knew that, while she could get one of the bad men, the other would be able to wound her, or do something bad to her friends. There wasn't much time left, so she had to risk herself.
Charlie was still rattled, but he held his sub-machine gun steady enough. "They never said that thing would be so fast, or so strong!"
"Just relax," muttered Dave into his radio. "We've got it pinned."
Just then, both of their motion sensors went off and they fired their sub-machine guns in that direction.
Maetel sprang for the floor, landing behind a table and upending it for cover before either of the men had reacted. Her ears and nose told her where they both were, and she charged past the closer man, carrying the table with her, heading for the one who had threatened her friends.
Charlie kept yelling profanities as he fired, yet the rubber bullets just bounced off the table the tiger-woman held.
Dave was a little more level-headed, though the yelling in his ears did bother him a bit, and he fired his net-gun at the floor towards the tiger-woman's feet.
When Maetel heard the scrape of the steel-mesh net on the floor, she grinned. Torquing her body, she flung the table at Charlie, the force of the motion sending her off at a tangent and landing her close enough to grab another table for cover.
