A tentative step.

:::takes a step back from the boards, eyes stinging and red from reading:::
::looks over her shoulder to each of the historically significant rings:::
::a shiver first, then a shudder, trails the length of her body:::
Oh m'gods.... I want to do this again so badly. But do I dare?
::elven laughter echos from the walls, the sound unsettling to her, grey eyes darting
to a certain fateful ring, the blood long since forgotten::
::fingers the hilt of Golindal:::
Bloody hell....
::exits.....quickly:::

::next night, wee hours::
She had requested the far back room of the Inn, the one with the best view down onto the Arena's back door. Unable to sleep well in the darkest night, a candle's light outlines the silent elf against the windowpane. Luthien wished someone would enter that damn arena. Despite the time... should there not be a janitor of some kind? Or even drunken thugs from the tavern looking for after hours sport?
Of course, you rediculous elf... everyone is sleeping, like you should be now. The arena door stood black and still....and closed. It gave her the creeps. Perhaps it had good reason to. Luthien looked back over her shoulder toward the humble bed. Her sword Golindal lay there... reflecting the single flame as it danced in the path of various drafts. The grey gaze returned to the street below. A trio of rats ran the gutter. My
purposeless vigil... she laughed inwardly.
Sleep claimed the elf only as the moon fell below the treeline.

Gentles,
Do take that churl Sneggle's crayons away and perhaps consider a fund to secure him a small room at the asylum. The lunatic lad ist now taking to scrawling his name upon the board for nae anna knowable reason.

Even removed by unkown distance and uncountable time from the land of his origins, the code of Bushido remained welded to the very soul of the diminutive samurai. Loyalty sworn was absolute, the long and seemingly permanent absence of his leige notwithstanding.
To only two persons had Miyamoto Unagi sworn fealty. The first had vanished from this realm long ago and the second was dead at her own wish by Unagi's hand. A command was a command, was it not?
And yet the remembrance of old decisions, actions and inactions, raised internal demons in the night. Furious exercise would drive them back into repose. And yet the most complex and demanding katas left Unagi only drenched. The marinomo evaded his arrows with fiendish, mocking glee. At the last he shoved shirasaya and tanto into his obi sash and stalked out of the compound.
The Arena was not open at such hours. Still the torturous compulsion drove Unagi through the silent streets to stand at last, steam rising unseen from muscles quivering with overuse, confronting the back door of the dueling hall as though regarding a mortal enemy.

The candle, burned down to a flat pool of wax. The windowsill made an awkward pillow for Luthien's forehead and she stirred awake. Blurred eyes glanced downward now out of habit, nearly missing the figure half shrowded in the milky blueness of pre-dawn light. The figure moved slightly, she caught sight. How odd that he would just stand there regarding the....
A single quick bound and reach, Golindal was in her hand. She tightened her empty swordbelt around her waist. Luthien's free hand found the blue stone tied around her neck and as her fingers warmed it's surface, she disappeared in an unseen shimmer of blue.
When Luthien materialized before the figure below, her sword was civily at rest. Her eyes had lost the haze of sleep and they drank the last flickers from the lamp post above them. They would regard each other a moment, in silence, it was her place to speak first.
"You're late, Unagi. And I am in need of training. You will fight me now." she said, politely, yet just as matter-of-factly.

She appeared in an instant, in less than a heartbeat, blue-clad and grey of eye. By the kami of all gods great and small what madness was this? Was this apparition truly his liege? Or was this some form of Kunoichi,
offspring of a she-devil and a ghost, come to assail him?
The stunned turmoil of this thought was belied only by a slow blink of his black oriental eyes.
"You're late, Unagi. And I am in need of training. You will fight me now."
Kunoichi or queen, the command was imperative. Unagi bowed, the formal short stiff ritual prelude to combat, and though muscles wailed their outrage and exhaustion, the muted gleaming of steel leapt with the rising of his head.
A right handed and inverted draw of the shirasaya in the rare third opening of iaijutstu
challenged the apparition's defenses while covering the transfer of two barbed shuriken from kimono sleeve to left hand, and Unagi's shouted kiai split the pre-dawn calm, chasing doves from their roosts in the building eaves and surrounding the two combatants with echoes and wingbeats.

Only after the shadows returned to stillness, did Luthien initiate her salute to the retainer. She bowed her head to him. Her body shifted back and low while the faintly glimmering Golindal raised to eye level. Her sights aimed up the length of the sword and focused centrally to meet his gaze. Peripherally, she assessed his first action. The cold morning breeze blew a
thick strand of black hair across her fine elven brow.
Golindal's hilt was snug and heavy in her hand while the weight of the blade remained balanced and manageable. Her first movements were parrys, each quick and calculated as she processed his opening attack. The jilt of sparking steel ran like lightning up through her swordarm. Each strike assaulted the calmness of her temper. Each defense of his repetative attack fed her desire to give back his offering of...challenge.
Luthien realized she had taken a number of steps backward. She could feel the prickling bushes under the eaves of the outside Arena wall. Distracting and irritating. Luthien also realized her disadvantage. He was armed in both hands, which would make a forceful push sword-to-sword a basic and deadly mistake. Melee...fat broadsword moving very quickly. Simple terms for her escape from the wall... she managed a half turn and found herself defending
again. She was at least free for further retreat if necessary. Full combat engaged. It was difficult to breathe. It was difficult to speak through her quick shallow breaths, though she did manage....
"No ward protects us in the alley." The out-of-practice and very mortal veteran duelist raised her free hand to assist at Golindal's hilt. She wondered if her opponent was observant to the fearfull action. But she quirked a smile as their weapons met again, pleased that she had even done this well thus far!

The ferocious assault seemed destined to swift success. In a flurry of strikes, Unagi drove the figure back toward the hedges lining the exterior wall of the Arena. In a moment, kuniochi devil or noble queen, she would be trapped and vulnerable.
But somehow she evaded the strike of the shuriken, and the barbed weapon became entangled in the stiff branches of a holly.
The diminutive samurai's left hand joined his right on the haft of the shirasaya and he redoubled his offensive with the long blade, but crucial momentum had been lost.
A further step by lithe form and they were turned, the line of battle now parallel to the entrapping hedges.
"No ward protects us in the alley."
The words startled him. Was this the honest reminder of a liege somewhat out of practice or was it the subterfuge of a wily demon?
Shirasaya met broadsword in another clash of steel and Unagi transitioned into the defensively oriented posture of Tai No Sen, prepared to either disengage or meet any counterattack.

As she fought him, she realized that he had not yet earned the gaze of friendship. She could now feel his mistrust and suspicion and at once she was ill at ease. For it might well be that he was engaged in this battle to have it end with a single victor.
The samurai's pause was his token gift...an unspoken offer... "are you friend or foe". And Luthien instantly disengaged. A rooster crowed as the sky released it's lighter hues. She moved slowly and angled away from Unagi while slipping Golindal neatly back into the sheath at her hip.
"What might I do to assuage thy spirit, Unagi?" querried the Queen. She faced him then from safety's length, held her hands low, palms submissive and receiving.
