Challenge to the Overlord
From: verceterixfavre@aol.com (Verceterix Favre)
Date: 01 Nov 2001 21:16:39 EST
As is my right as Renegade Baron, I am issuing challenge to Seamus MacDonnaugh for the title of Overlord.
As I have witnessed so far, the Overlord has been less than cordial in dealing with the challenges he's been involved in thus far, not to mention his tactics to gain and control the title, and I find those sufficent reasons to pursue his removal from the rank.

In case anyone is interested, it has been responses such as this to challenges which was the main reason of my challenge. So I've got a copy of the Overlord's latest response, and since it looks like he wants to not let the community in on it, I will.
"Excuse me?
your opinion of me means absolutely nothing to me
had you an ounce on honor in you, you would come to me and ask my reasoning
The first challenger was a ass, nothing more than someone wishing to turn this community into a guild
the second was executed , dishonored the fifth ring and returned from the dead to fight a battle with me
I felt him as well as Xeric worthless as Barons or even persons.
How does an Overlord rid himself of these particular Barons? Simply ask a warlord to challenge them, or wait for them to challenge and test them with a warlord that has the option of challenging for the ring.
Since I chose the latter, I am deemed unfit to hold the title?
I have attempted to bring together a group of DoS's oldest veterans to meet and interact with the newer members of DoS, It seems that before the ink dries on one challenge another hits my mail box, leaving me no time to give back to the community, that which I have been given.
Tell me truthfully, what Overlord in recent memory has done anything for the Duel of Swords rather than themselves?
One who did try forgot to ask permission of her barons, and was run out of town on a rail.
I for one will not be run out. Bring your champion Baron, bring your insult weilding cohorts as well, and lets get this done once and for all.
Mac Donnaugh"

How whimsical of you, Overlord.
To be so arrogant as to think I returned from the "dead" just to defeat you; you give yourself far too much credit. You're a capricious fawn.
I shall not overextend myself and compliment your performance.

Quit being such a baby, Seamus. Your only responsibility as Overlord is to meet the challenges brought to you. All Overlords should be tested as much as you have been. Especially ones who cower behind the test.
You are a coward and a drunk. No amount of justification will change that.

"Your only responsibility as Overlord is to meet the challenges brought to you."
But a good Overlord, much like a good Baron, wish to serve the community in some way. As much as I approve of other Overlords, I think it's a shame that the one who does wish to give something back to the Arena other than merely his own presence is challenged more frequently than the past few Overlords combined.
If anything, I know I would be frustrated if I had three straight challenges. While I don't believe it's for me to say when one should and should not challenge (I admittedly overstep my own bounds, but not without reproach), I think Seamus has handled it quite well.
If I am able to show up, I offer Seamus my blade to duel as a champion. Not that I dislike Rix as a person, but I think Seamus is a better Overlord.

Rediculous
One challenges, claimin' thet two years with only one challenge be too long. Yet he o'erlooks the Baron who has nae been challenged since achievin' his ring near seven months ago now.
Another challenges, mentionin' the Overlord's tactics in gainin' the Mantle. Yet he fergets that the Overlord won his challenge right in the Tourney. Nae tae mention the Baron in question bein' a very rare presense in the Arena e'er since gainin' his Ring!
Overlord MacDonnaugh, I do offer me services tae fight fer ye... though I do understand ifin ye wish tae give such tae a Warlord in the hopes thet this Baron may be unseated.
As fer the other matter, I would love tae see the Overlord put Ganderfald in his place, seein' as he will likely jest use the Ring as a steppin' stone toward the Mantle.

Ridiculous? I think it's time you put your pen down for a while Karen. Your holier-than-thou attitude was amusing for a while but it has become obnoxious now.
Yes, Rix has not been challenged since winning his ring seven months ago. However, Rix is renegade to an overlord that my husband has been very vocal in his disapproval of. We all know this strange vendetta you have against Rix but few people, if any, hold the same hostility towards him. Cletus does not.
Unagi is a loyal to the drunk, has only been challenged once in two years, and is the senior baron. Who couldn't see this challenge coming a mile away?
Cletus is not using a ring to jump into a bid for overlord. We agree that Rix will make a fine overlord and after my husband's reign, his children would like him to spend more time at home.
As for Rix's claim about the Overlord's tactics gaining his title, you're again speaking without the full story. I assume Rix is referring to the Overlord's behavior the night of the match against Cletus. It was rude and inexcusable. He treated the night more like a bar fight than a challenge for a title.
After a very close challenge, Seamus bragged in the Arena the next weekend to my face about how badly he whipped Cletus. Then when I tried to correct him and mentioned that he may not remember the evening very well since he was drunk for most of it, he laid into me.
Again you accuse Rix of something that you yourself have been accused of several times in the past -- being absent. You made no apology for it and did not retire your ring. Please try to keep your hypocrisy in check.
It doesn't surprise me that you and your fellow mindless drone, Cas, would be loyal to the drunk. However with the Overlord pulling stunts such as this on a constant basis, I'd think at least Cas would have grown tired of it by now.
Wake up. Get a mind of your own because sharing a mind with whatever overlord you declare your loyalty to this week is getting a bit sad.

I find it interesting that when I stopped last eve to pen a note about this, Rix had been here. staple gun in hand to quote me.
You speak of my responses in earlier challenges as your reasoning to challenge me. I will post the last two challenges I received along with my responses and let fols determine if the replys were warranted.
From Xeric
I challenge Seamus. My reasons are my own.
Xeric
the response
Baron,
I accept. I will be in the Annex, Saturday the 20th, 9:pm by the reading of the old waterclock.
I have asked Celes to officiate, I await her reply
Seamus Mac Donnaugh
45th Ovlerlord,
Dreys challenge
I am pressing challenge to the Overlord, Seamus.
- Starke
My opinion of this Baron is not hidden, Rix was it not you that fought for the honor of the 5th ring when this man and the proxy used it as a token?
was he not killed?
apparently all were dupped and I personally do not look kindly on being deceived.
My response to him as
I believe my answer was simply,
It seems that large words are and decorum aconfusing to the baron so I will keep it simple
Accepted
As for your challenge Rix, ya forgot to post up here the first response, as this you are quoting is second.
here is the first
I accept,.
find a caller and tell me when,
I tire of playing this game
Isn't it wonderful that the former overlord and his wife deem you a worthy overlord,
Perhaps all of DoS should bow to the will of the Ganderfalds
It would seem the loyal followers are goosestepping to their tune.
Arane.
You misrepresented the facts in the matter of my alledged "Laying in to you"
My wording to the Sloth after dueling him was simple, "Don't feel bad slothy, you scored more points in that duel than Cletus in the second"
You took me to task and insulted me, Calling me a drunk is your right and your opinion
Insulting me as a father was another subject. Lest we forget, you have no knowledge of my past, and certainly none of my losses so when I was angered with you, twas not about the scotch.
I didn't brag about he win, you took offense.
When I told you that the door swings both ways and the Cletus was welcomed to challenge, you said my problem was with you not with Cletus.
I see now that my problem is with you and your associates.
I was under the impression after your husband spit in the ring, gathered you up and said you must go now, there is packing to do that you were leaving us. Pity, that ya didn't.
As for spending time with the we bairns,
it seems to me I have seen more of Cletus now than throughout his reign.
Now he is challenging for another ring?
Does this not seem contradictive to the desire to be a homebody?
on a side note, the choice of champion by Drey comes to mind,
twould seem the warlord sent a note to the standings keeper, mere hours before the challenge asking to be reinstated, not days before as he claimed to me in the Annex.
My Question Jesse, did you send two letters at the same time in hope Drey or I would acccept you offer or did you wait till I told ya the Orc was championing me before contacting the Baron and offering your services?
Since we all want to be so forthcomng in the truth of these events, I thought it practical to let the entire DoS see what is going on here rather than a few choice snippets.

Yes yes, I haven't had much time to duel. Whoopdie do. With my semi-retirement from the Team Dueling League, I have had to find other jobs to bring in income. I refuse to live off of my fiancee. If you think I wouldn't drop a few of those jobs if I became Overlord, you'd be wrong. Not to mention Ally would allow me to get out more... at least until we tied the knot.
Seamus, I have no problem with the first test. I probably would have done the same thing. I do, however, object to how you acted against Cletus, and also how you treated Xeric while setting a time and date. You omitted those. Here are my own copies.
"Overlord,
I understand that you as well have times where you cannot make it, therefore an understanding does need to be made. But as I stated, I cannot be in the Annex the 20th, sorry for any misunderstanding.
Xeric
Baron of the 8th
Former Baron of the 12th
Member of the Galadrim
Baron
though I have yet to hear any compelling reason to accomodate your request, I will step out on a limb and assume my second and the caller will be available on Friday the 19th.
I hope this is acceptable
Seamus
Baron,
though I find it ludicrous you would issue a challenge out of the blue, knowing full well there is a 21 day window in which you may be asked to press the matter, and you refuse to accept the dates that are convienient to my entourage. We are asked to bend over backwards for your "guest for the goal"
Well we have decided amongst ourselves to compromise.
I will be in the annex on the night of the 14th, that being this sunday at 10:30 by the water clock.
Do not expect anything else in the way of charity on my part.
Seamus Mac Donnaugh
45th overlord of the DoS
Former Baron of the First and Fourth rings"
I find it confusing as to why you'd attack a man for not being able to make a date. It is supposed to be a compromise between parties, and you made it seem like he had no right to refuse any date.
As for Drey, yes I was there. Unfortunately, I can't recall if I killed him or not. I'm no doctor and I did not check on him once the duel was finished. If there was any deception, myself or the Blindfold Proxy should be the ones upset, not the community.
You seem to also misunderstand how an Overlord is judged. I am not stopping you from implementing anything. You certainly don't have to stop because you're being challenged, but that's beside the point. At the end of the day, Overlords are not judged by community meetings or attempting to give back to the community. Overlords are judged by how many duels they win and how they carry themselves. In fact, one can go without the other. You, Seamus,
are not carrying yourself well as an Overlord for whatever reason.
I also just shake my head that you would use a test on me. It appears you are hell-bent on disposing of any who disagree with you. The test used to mean something. Now you use it just to try to take a Baron's ring away. I yearn for the days when the sport would become angry with the abuse of the test.
I have been a Warlord for nigh on five years. I have held the Fifth ring longer than the 20 or so previous holders. Ian MacKenzie gave me his own weapon. I have nothing to prove to anyone, and a test against me would be laughable. I guarantee that I would have more champions ready to step in for me than champions you could round up.
I feel myself in the twilight of my career. My time is short and I would rather act now and attempt to bring some honor and tradition back to the sport than fade away and watch as the sport becomes more corrupted and these ways are accepted.
You want to give back to the community, Seamus? Start now. Cease the petty responses, the whiny act, the drunkard act, and the holier-than-thou act. You're an Overlord, act like one.

Politics, politics, politics. Plot and plan, turn and burn. Whine, cry, moan, holler, and offend while being offended.
Perhaps the Overlord has been challenged so many times because he has failed to actually defend his position without being forced to via a lost test. Supremacy by proxy? I think not, this is a sport, not a battlefield negotiation.
At the end of the day, when you all go home with your underwear all twisted over someone doing this or someone doing that, the Arena is still standing there, no worse for the wear. Your (and yes, I'm referring to all of you, no matter who you are, friend or stranger) importance to our beloved Arena ends the second you walk out of the Arena door, but none of you seem to realize that.
The Overlord is supposed to be the supreme dueler of our sport. When the supreme dueler does not duel in a duel for supremacy, and instead places others in the way of a sporting challenge, well in my humble opinion, that's more dishonorable to the Arena itself than any moron's words or actions. This is a contact sport. Play it like one. Shut up and fight. Fight your own battle or fight more battles until you're removed. And if you do fight your
own battles, you're going to be removed anyway. That's the way of the sport. It's your choice how you go down in history. Someone that fought for what he believed in. Or someone who had others fight for what he believed in.
I suppose there's an unwritten rule around here that everyone must act like an ass to anyone outside their circle of allies. With few exceptions, no one will admit to liking many of the people that frequent the Arena. Leads me to wonder why we all stay here. Maybe we're all masochists. Or maybe we all think "when I'm Overlord, it will be different".
It won't be different. For every one that supports you, there's one, two, three, four, five others that don't. The Overlord can't change the world. Can't even change the Arena beyond painting it pink or putting better beer on tap. And you don't really have to be the Overlord to do that.
I don't know about you folks, but the reason why I'm here, the reason why I stay is to fight. This is my sport. My recreation. This is what I do when work and family has me stressed. This is what I do when I'm feeling depressed or alone. This is what I do when I want to have fun.
Before you, any of you, contribute any further to "this place is a horrid mess where everyone but me is an ass, and she's plotting and planning to do something I think is bad, and he's a scumbag undeserving of a title", stop for a second and take a look at your sword and those banners hung up around this place. In fact, do it right now, don't even finish reading this ... I have nothing left to write but this: shut up and fight. You're not a
politician or anymore a judge of character worth than me or him or her, you're a fighter. Now act like one.

Rix~
My friend, repay to him what he gave to Dalamar years ago. The man is not a sportsman, but an abusive sot. Make him bleed.
And to think there were those who thought him to be their savior from the "evil Dalamar" back then. Look how the community turns on you, Seamus. Karma, sir...karma.

>If anything, I know I would be frustrated if I had three straight challenges.
The whole point of holding a title is to get challenged and prove your worth with a sword. I know I'd love to have three straight challenges, but instead I get one in a year.
Boring.
>As much as I approve of other Overlords, I think it's a shame that the one
>who does wish to give something back to the Arena other than merely his own
>presence is challenged more frequently than the past few Overlords combined.
Why does someone have to be Overlord to give whatever it is they give to the community? So far, the only thing I've seen this one give is whines at challenges and drunken complaints.
> I think Seamus has handled it quite well.
No offense, but insulting everyone who gives him a challenge isn't handling it well. He is higher than no one, but acts as if its a grave sin to challenge him.

He thinks he is so clever, when in all truth, he is quite the opposite. I must apologize for not defeating him; sickly so.
