The samurai stalked along the cricketwood floors of the compound, the discipline of stepping silently across the notoriously creaky laths failing to stanch the flood of thoughts.
"What is meaning of such chicanery? How is opponent hatamoto C'retus and not hatamoto C'retus?"
All he knew was that the challenge match, a fine battle with shifting lead, came to an abrupt halt before the final blow could be struck. True, his head still ached from the hatamoto's strike in the fifth round, but the samurai had recovered enough for a brilliant slash and parry combination. Surely he would have noticed a change in his opponent.
"Maybe I too much caught up in fight. Bakufu Var-san, Jesse-sama, even shogun see what Unagi not see. Opponent 'rook 'rike C'retus, but not C'retus."
The silent pacing continued.
"Maybe was demon or kami... but no. I am sure hatamoto C'retus was there at start of fight."
The pacing stopped.
"Sorcery."
Long fingers wrap tightly around the haft of the long blade thrust through his obi sash and Unagi spits and makes the warding sign against the evil eye.
"Is sorcery."
A long slow breath and the ebon oriental eyes gleam in the darkness.
"No matter. Sorcerer... demon... kami... you fight Unagi, Unagi beat."
The matter settled in his own head, the samurai pads off toward the sleeping pallet and Nyan-nyan.

::reading of the condition of the former overlord, Seamus pens a small note and tacks it to the cork::
Lady Ganderfald, though we both know your feelings toward me, I can but wish your husbands speedy and complete recovery.
It may do him well to be with family during this time of healing. I wish you the best
