Thomas nodded to himself. This Brute of the Week award was a bit different because the buckle had to be made special. Ms. Kyttn had said so. It was for the big man - the one everyone called Goon. Thomas would have never confessed that he was afraid of the big man, but he was just so MUCH bigger than the lad himself. At six foot six, the man was a tremendous bundle of muscle and force. Thomas had watched him a number of times and just couldn't believe the way he dueled. It wasn't always graceful, but it had gotten him to the rank of Ruby. Thomas was pleased it would take extra time to make and engrave the buckle. He wasn't sure he knewwhere to find the big man anyway. ===Once the buckle had been made, Thomas went looking in the forest where that logger fellow, Layne Jenkins, had been cutting wood. Usually he'd find the folks he needed to award in the Outback itself, but it was the middle of the day after the buckles were usually awarded and he wasn't sure he wanted to meet up with Goon at night. The forest wasn't much less intimidating in the day than at night and for a boy who'd run the streets most of his young life, this green growing place was spooky. The sun filtered down through a canopy of branches and made the ground sometimes too dim to see clearly. Things crunched under his feet and scurried just beyond his ability to spy them and comfort himself with reassurances that the sounds were made by smallish, benign animals. He heard footsteps and felt something big behind him so suddenly that he could hardly take a breath! The package was heavy in his hands with the weight of the buckle and he stood still as stone, certain his short life was over...

Goon scratched his head. He peered at the kid in front of him, wondering why he looked so scared. Wandering around to the front of him, he grinned and asked, "What do with lot tree? Lot easy get lot lot lost."

Thomas handed him the package, which Goon gleefully opened. He gawked when he saw the prize.. a big, neato, shiny buckle!

"Goon win! Goon big lot good fighter person!" He bounced around happily, forgetting the poor boy who delivered the prize as he got lost deep in the woods, his home.

Thomas wasn't sure how he'd gotten home. He'd stumbled out of the woods and wound up very near to the monastery where his room was. He sprawled on the bed and didn't wake up for a day. Brother Dominic came to find him and shake him awake. His computer was beeping; there was another message from Ms Kyttnayah about the next Brute of the Week. "Oh 'Evans..." he murmured when he saw that it was Layne Jenkins and that he'd have to go into the woods yet again; because Mr. Jenkins never seemed to just hang out in the Outback. After a good meal and his daily chores, Thomas went to get the buckle and make his way back into the woods to find Mr. Jenkins.

Brute of the Week Awards (RDI Kyttn) Talyn Star 7/22-24Young Thomas, having survived his trip out to the encampment of the loggers, returned to spend a week doing chores quietly around the monastery. Brother Patrick made soft note to Brother Dominic that young Thomas didn't seem to be saying much and that the Church yard needed cleaning yet again; but that the boy had seemed to have forgotten some of his 'out-of-doors' chores. Dominic insisted that it was becasue Thomas never ateproperly and Patrick shook his head, disagreeing but not saying so. "Ah'll talk ta th' lad, Dominic, don't worry yerself aboat his atein' habits." "Good man, Patrick," Dominic's deep voice boomed from his wide chest. "I've got dinner to tend to and that boy needs someone's guidance ever since that ... that... ""Cat woman?" Patrick smiled at his own supplied words, his eyes twinkling with amusement. Often, he himself with one eye of blue and one of brown was seen as something not quite natural. He had come to learn that all god's creatures were often thus misunderstood."Yes, that 'cat-woman' brought that computer here. Thomas has been good with the gadget but wrapped up in what he has to do for that.. er.. the one who brought it." "'Tis sure an' positive I am tha' Percival would nae ha' told her aboat us 'twas she nae trustworthy. 'Tis merely an odd thang she is, an' in need o'some guidance herself I'm expectin'."Dominic snorted. "I can not say, Patrick. But if you're willing to keep an eye on things, as you said you were --""Aye, 'tis true now as't was then..." "Then I've no objections. Brother Donald has a task or two for Thomas as well, if you can rouse the lad to do his 'outside' duties." "I'll be ga'in with 'im tae th' engraving shop. Would ye like anathang from th' town, Brother Dominic?" "Oh, yes, I'd nearly forgotten..." Dominic went along a small list which Patrick committed to memory and then turned to take his leave of the other Friar. Thomas would need to be roused, his fear of the logging camp and traveling forth into the day also needing to be allayed. ===Patrick walked with his hand on Thomas' shoulder. Young Thomas looked downtrodden and dejected, as if he'd not done anything properly in a long time. Patrick directed his steps to the Outback where Thomas held up the shining buckle to Ms Star. "'Ere, Ms. Star," Thomas said, in his small voice. "I meant to bring it sooner, I did, but ... but... I was afraid. That's roit. I's not afraid to admit I was afraid. Brother Patrick 'ere 'e says a man's got to admit his fears. I didn't want to see that Mr. Jenkins or that big bloke Mr. Goon again so soon. Sometimes this job's 'ard on a lad like me, but Brother Patrick, 'e says I need to be strong. Ms Kyttnayah expects it o' me and I aims tobe strong like she expects. So..." he held up his small hands, meticulously cleaned for this occasion, and offered her the award. "You've earned this, Miss. Your peers say so. Congratulations." Brother Patrick smiled at Ms Star as well. "Aye Congratulations lass."

Brute of the Week Awards (RDI Kyttn) Bane0fEvil 8/5-8/7Huma had done it that week and Kyttn awarded him the Brute of the Week award because within the system of how she judged the Brutes, based on the recommendations of her colleagues, he had proven himself that week and to her it was that simple. She sat down on the high bluff where she'd made her camp that week and tapped out the message to Thomas by connecting to rhydin.net. What surprised her was that Thomas sent her mail backalmost immediately and she let out a laugh that echoed across the RhyDin wild country. Rhydin.net was a service provided by the tech wizards of RhyDin (most of them based in and around the tech-oriented cities--like the Spaceport at Star's End--of that mystical land where cultures, times and peoples blended in a Nexus of something beyond the "normal"). This service was based in a small complex just outside the range of the e.l.f.'s put out by the spaceport and all its intergalactic traveling. The complex was called Netvillageand it's main building recieved all net mail at vienna.rhydin.net. Vienna was the name of the president of the rhydin.net corporation. The service allowed RhyDin's more tech oriented citizens to connect to the rss.net and other electronic online services. There were more based across RhyDin, but Kyttn had been using rhydin.net for years--since she'd arrived on this world--and it suited her. She was surprised that Thomas had managed to convince the monks to let him connect to the net and the more she thought about it, she was sure the monks had NOT been the ones to let him. After he'd answered her mail and acknowledged the Brute award he was to get, she sent him a personal message. The PMs could connect two people who were on the net at the same time (you didn't even need to be on rhydin.net for this anymore, the things thatcame out of Netvillage were so wonderfully advanced that you could talk to anyone if they were connected and you had a name for the computer to point to.)Their conversation went rather like this: natescat : Hey Thomas... when did you get connected? I knew you had email but... thms5903: It's been a while now, Ms. Kyttan. thms5903: Oops I mean Kyttn. natescat : That's alright Thomas, it's not a problem.. but do the Brothers mind? thms5903: No of coarse notKyttn smiled to herself as she typed, sure the boy was ... taking privileges with the truth. Certainly his spelling didn't reflect having been online a "long" time. natescat : They don't? I'm surprised. It's good to talk to you I hope everything's all right there. I had a dream about the chapel burning last week. thms5903: A dream aobut a fire? There haven't been any fires and Brother Dominic says that drems are just the devil getting to you in your sleep. natescat : Maybe they are, Thomas. I'll have the next Brute of the Week for you as soon as Mr. Rask sends me the word. ...she paused before finishing and then wrote:natescat : Don't stay on too long. I'm sure the brothers would want you to do your chores. thms5903: Yes Mxkyttn mam.natescat : Goodnight Thomas.thms5903: goodnite Ms Kyttn.Kyttn heard something, then, in the darkness and forgot all about thms5903@rhydin.net and closed down her PADD to do some "dinner stalking".====Thomas meanwhile felt oddly as if he were being watched and disconnected from rhydin.net. He'd found a ... what did Ms. Kyttn call them? ... a disc with rhydin.net emblazoned across it and had discovered a free trial offer. He hadn't been sure what that was exactly and it didn't require any of what Ms. Kyttn called credits -or any coin either- on his part (Free really seemed to mean free, when dealing with rhydin.net) so he participated. He hadenjoyed it so far and hadn't been caught. Well, almost nearly when Brother Patrick found him asleep over his keyboard - but the dancing pictures that Ms. Kyttn called a screen saver were floating across the computer's monitor and Brother Patrick didn't seem inclined to touch the keyboard. Thomas had been saved. He had been reading the manuals that came with the machine Kyttn had given him and he set it up so that he had to type in a password to get out of the screen saver right after Brother Patrick had left the room. Capture had seemed so close that a password made him feel secure. He left his chambers and with voices echoing off the stone as the Brothers prepared for the evening meal, Thomas raced out of the monastery and along the dirt path that took him past the small church. He loved to run and made his way into town to the engraver's so that he could give Mr Huma EvilBane his belt buckle when he found him later that night in the Outback.

Brute of the Week Award, 8/12 - 14 (RDI Kyttn) HarlFrickThomas found himself running again for the engraving shop. He had two slips in his hand and wondered what had kept Ms. Kyttn from keeping her promise of getting them to him on time. He was just a lad, but Thomas believed that the Brute should have his 'week in the spotlight' while he or she held the title. This time, he'd have two buckles to present at one time and it didn't precisely please him. Still, he was a boy, what did he know? It was becoming ritual for the engraver to look for Thomas and when he saw him this time, he said, "Where ya been, boy? Getting used to your face 'round here." Thomas smiled and said in his most polite tones, "Thank you Mr. Teagan, sir. I like comin' 'ere. Ms. Kyttn needed some extra time this week, I'm guessin'." "She's the expert, I suppose," Teagan commented noncommitally as he examined the slips of paper and proceeded to work on the buckles. ===The first would go to Harl Frickard, whom some in the Outback referred to as "the Ear". Thomas had picked up on that once and knew why, having seen the older, experienced man who was lacking his right ear. He would never dare to speak to this man using that nickname, however. The armor the man wore seemed outdated, dented but lovingly cared for and the sword he carried was damn huge; so Thomas was polite, careful and brief when he presented theaward. "Mr Frickard, sir," he said, his voice squeeking, his one hand holding out the buckled, wrapped in cloth, his other hand holding the next Brute's buckle. "Congratulations!" As soon as he was relieved of the buckle, Thomas moved on to find the other winner.

Brute of the Week Award, 8/19 - 21 (RDI Kyttn) GoldgloThomas made his tired way to the high cliff over-looking a large body of water. He couldn't be precisely sure what it was, but he heard the lapping of waves. The foliage prevented a clear looksee from the front of the house so he let his curiosity about it slip away. The house he stood before looked lived in and homey. He knocked, but there was no answer. He really hoped he had the right place. He'd never just left one of the Brute award buckles outside for someone before. He'd always done his best to "present" the award as Ms. Kyttnayah had taught him. He wondered if she were EVER coming back to do this job herself. He scratched at his scalp to allieviate the sweat that tickled and beaded beneath the mop of hair that grew there. He wouldn't be here if he had found Mr. Simon in the Outback. "Coo," he murmured. "I'll 'ave to leave it 'ere then. The brothers will be wondering where the 'ell I've gone to." He bent down, unwilling to wait longer because night was falling and it had grown quite cool, and because the brothers wouldn't hesitate to dress him down for being late, again.Congratulations, Mr. Simon-sir, he thought and darted off into the growing twilight.

Brute of the Week Award, 8/26 - 28 (RDI Kyttn) AlannaRoweMs. Kyttnayah had sent a personal note along with the Brute award for the end of August. Thomas smiled as he made his way to the Outback to deliver the message and the shiny new buckle. The message read: Greetings Alanna! I felt giving you the Brute award was appropriate because with the winning streak you were on you got yourself an Emerald ranking. Kelli and I have been alone up there too long with the resignation of Shanni Colton. It's good to have you with us. I may just have to come back sooner than I planned to duel you and keep myself in the running. You definately deserve the Brute award in my book.Congratulations! KyttnWhen Thomas handed over the note and the shining brute of the week buckle, he stood with his back straight and proud. "Congratulations Ms. Rowe."

Brute of the Week, 9/2-4, (RDI Kyttn) KailyneWndKailyne Wynd was new to the duels, Thomas thought. He'd been there longer himself than she had and that brought a smile to his lips. But he'd been hanging around the Outback and he'd seen her fighting her heart out. At first, he thought she was just trying to impress Deuce, that new ref. She was pretty enough to impress anyone, the boy thought, whether she dueled or not.The lad combed his hair, washed his face and wrapped the buckle up in pretty paper before he made his way to the Outback that night to present the award to Ms. Wynd. He didn't quite know why he did all these things. In fact, he didn't particularly think about doing them. For Thomas, this was a first. As a boy of twelve and a half he never would have washed up to present an award without beng told to do so. But she wasn't that much olderthan he was and something inside him made him want to be presentable for Ms. Wynd. He walked with great dignity through the doors of the Outback that night to find her and present the award. When he finally saw her on the stairs, he froze, unable to find the simple words to say congratulations. She's so awesome, he thought, and just held out the wrapped award with both hands.

Brute of the Week Awards 9/9-9/11 (RDI Kyttn) Talyn Star Thomas didn't know her very well, but Talyn Star, the one everyone called Jen, was a woman and she'd won the brute buckle last week. Ms. Kyttn had sent the notice and Thomas had been sick so he hadn't delivered the buckle as he should have, promptly. He again had two awards in his hands but he'd make his presentation to Ms. Star first. The problem was, when he went to the Outback, he couldn't find her. He tucked the wrapped buckle away in his pocket and waited to see if she'd show up.

Brute of the Week Awards 9/16-9/18 (RDI Kyttn) Lord TEKThomas held the other Brute Buckle up and examined it. Twice in two months.. coo, he thought. Mr. Maureen must have been doing something right to get the award again, Thomas thought. Maybe he'd teach me. Waiting, Thomas began to swing his legs back and forth as he sat on the bar. The Outback was empty, but he had time to kill today. His chores were all done and the brothers didn't need him for anything else. Brother Patrick had gone into town leaving Thomas there in the Dojo and would stop by on the way back to walk home with him. So it was there Thomas waited, playing with the heavy bags, looking over the Diamond portraits and generallyloving being there.

Brute of the Week Awards 9/23-9/25 (RDI Kyttn) Seth MaskThomas followed Brother Patrick into the Duels. The friar had visited a few times, but tonight Brother Patrick had made it known he might consider participation. Thomas was relieved when all they did was slipped in, each of them had a small drink of sweet cider at the bar and then presented the Brute of the Week buckle award to Seth Mask, Glass of the duel of Fists for his winning efforts. Thomas was doubly relieved when they left, the great oak doors of the dojo closing behind them. "Brother Patrick," he began in his gentlest tone."Aye, lad?" "You wouldn't ... you aren't... thinking of dueling 'ere later on are ye?""'Tis true an' I might be. Would that be botherin' ye 'twere I tae put oop me fists in tha rings, then?""No, Brother Patrick.. of course not." "'Tis a good thang tae exercise, Thomas m'lad." Thomas squeeked a positive reply, helpless to do otherwise. Patrick simply smiled.

Brute of the Week Awards 9/30-10/02 (RDI Kyttn) StatmanRRBrother Patrick walked to the engraver's shop early in the morning. His sandals made a pleasant scuff-scuff sound on the cobble. Even if the air was chilly, his toes were used to the cold. He'd left himself plenty of time to take care of the engraving as soon as he'd discovered Thomas, asleep at the keyboard of the gadget Ms. Kyttn had given him. The boy had been running a high fever and Patrick called Dominic who called Donald who together put Thomas into bed and set a watch over him. Prayers went up for the young boy and Patrick took it upon himself to deal with the awarding of the buckle. He waited while the buckle was engraved, did some light shopping in town after he had the buckle securely wrapped and tucked away in his worn, belted, brown cassock and made his way back to the monastery to check on Thomas. ====That evening, Patrick reached for the Outback door handle, his mismatched eyes studying it a moment before he entered. He didn't often think about the decisions he'd made in life, basing them all on how best he could serve the Lord, and but for a moment's pause, that night was no different. "Ralez," he called, stepping in, hoping the man was there to receive the award. "Ralez Rastlin? Yer th' winner o'th' Broot o'th' Week lad! Where be ye?"
