The gruff Hispanic man lazily sat back on a couch in his HQ apartment, staring lazily at the screen across the room. Clothes flew all around as he tilted his head back, guzzling the bitter beer, letting it escape from its tin prison, only to find freedom at the bottom of his gullet. Grabbing the small box next to him, he pressed the largest button on the top, forcing the clothes and skin to be replaced by a dark void of blackness on the screen.

"Some flick," he muttered. "One video store in the whole town, and everything they sell is crap like this. Heh, probably why half the locals don't even know what a movie is, no reason for anyone to spread the word when all it is..is.." He tossed the remote aside, feeling his hard belly sway a bit as he struggled to rise from the deep cushions of the couch.

"Crap."

*Knocknocknocknock*. He groaned. Only one person didn't call first..even if it was for a good reason, it didn't make his annoyance level drop much. "Get in here, Bones," he called out, scratchy voice echoing in the large den.

The door swung open fast, closing faster. Before him was his bulky, tanned partner. Everytime he said the man's name, he wondered where it came from. Bigger than him in all aspects, with the possible exception of being the same height, Bones was hardly the skinny runt his name would make him out to be. An impressive physical specimen, his time working out had paid dividends. His time in front of the mirror had also gone to his head. But if they
got in trouble, Bones had never failed getting them out of it.

"Hey, Miguel..we got a job." The burly voice rumbled low through the room, filling Miguel's mind with anticipation. "Here's the note."

Miguel held his hand out, never looking at Bones once. Feeling the paper in his hand, he unfolded it and read the message quietly. Slipping his lighter from his pocket, he calmly flicked it on, holding the small flame to the crumpled paper. His dark brown eyes reflected the light of the fire as it crept closer to his fingers. Once it nipped at his skin, he tossed the burning note into the air, letting it disintegrate on its downward journey.
Turning away, he walked to the door, opening it as the fire ceased, its fuel gone.

"New Mountainside. Let's go."

The two men stood in the tactics room, looking at a map of the land. New Mountainside was a decent chunk of land. Fairly easy to cross, the castle would surely be guarded at all times, making entry difficult. Kidnapping Luthien would be a damned near impossible task. Same went for her husband. As Bones looked over the map, Miguel stared at the pictures they had of the castle. High stone walls..hard to scale, although far from impossible. The
unknown was what kind of sentries lay in wait on top. The parapets would make it difficult to see, even when they were there.. maybe that could be an advantage.

Turning to the side and rear views of the castle, the dark-skinned man rubbed his eyes in frustration. There was no clue as to where Luthien slept, where the armory, treasury, or anything else of importance was. All the walls looked too similar to make one more attack-worthy than another.

Then the light bulb clicked on, and an idea flashed through Miguel's mind. "Bones! I know what we'll do." As the muscular man got up and walked over, Miguel pointed out various spots on the different pictures, explaining his plan...

A half hour passed. The pair nodded to each other, then grabbed their gear. For a job like this, time was of the essence- no reason not to take care of it tonight.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One...two...three. The smaller man's fingers flashed the count to his partner across the clearing. From this vantage point, Miguel could see the guards walking the wall with his 'Nocs. Once he hit three, the guards turned away, and the men stealthily worked their way forward, to another hiding spot.

One...two...three. The guards turned a little quicker this time. One looked off into the distance for a bit longer. Was someone moving out there? He shrugged it off as a shadow among shadows..trees and animals had a way of making silhouettes of crazy things appear in the moonlight.

One...two...three. They timed it as perfectly as possible, making a mad dash for the wall. The parapet covered their maneuvers just in time, as the same guard turned and looked out again, unable to shake his odd feeling of something not being quite right. Turning to his partner, he said, "Something's wrong..I'm getting Queen Luthien, she may be in danger. Stay on watch.." Hurrying to the stairs, and down to Her Majesty's chambers, the sentry had
no idea how good his intuition was.

Miguel ripped a small pouch off his belt. The lack of work lately had lowered the amount of goods that he could afford; not only that, what they needed was far more rare and expensive in this area, so he needed to conserve what he could. He thought about that fact angrily as he set the tiny box of plastiques to the back wall of the castle. His hands masterfully worked the explosives, holding it in place as he carefully attached tape and a timer to
it while Bones kept watch for guards.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sentry rushed to Luthien's quarters. He relayed what he saw and thought quickly to the door guards, who decided to take no chances with the Queen's life. Knocking loudly, so she would wake as quickly as possible, they waited.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miguel nodded. Bones took one last look around, then nodded a reply. Silently, the two split up, each going around one side of he castle. They planned to meet back at headquarters; hopefully, neither one would get caught. But this wasn't anything new to them. Both left the other's presence with an arrogant assuredness that they would meet again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The door opened. "Your Majesty.." The situation was explained, and the queen was taken to a safe place.

Meanwhile, the remaining guard on the rear wall wondered what was taking so long. He stared off into the distance, as his partner had. Not seeing anything strange, he craned his neck so he could see over the parapet. Squinting, he noticed a small, white box in the castle's shadow. "What..what is that.."

The rear of the castle erupted in flame, as the ten minutes set on the timer elapsed, and the wall was crushed beneath the blast. A gaping hole, ten feet in radius, was left in the stone. Some of the grass burned to a crisp beneath the pieces of Luthien's castle, which fell away bit by bit, onto the rubble that was the immediate effect of the explosion. The guard was thrown backwards, off the wall on the castle side.

As the commotion started, Miguel and Bones started off in opposite directions, pleased with their work.

A message was found on a mirror in Luthien's chambers, scrawled in blood: "Somebody paid the price."

And somewhere, somebody was smiling.

((Author's note- I know I took a few liberties with regards to how the guards acted, how the "safe area" wasn't near the blast, etc. I did it so that the story could flow, which it needs to do to start a good SL, in my opinion. If I made a major error, one that must be corrected, feel free to make a small note and fix it in another post.

Also, if anyone decides to catch Miguel or Bones, or manage to track them to HQ- the thread will die prematurely. That much should be obvious. Still, these two are elite, and know how to cover their trails; I ask that no one "figure out" a way to follow them back to their headquarters. ~Miguel's player))

"What? Another drill? I didn't schedule any drills for t'night..." mumbled Luthien in a temporary lack of orientation. She'd been sleeping so soundly, so comfortably in the soft blue satin."No drill..." replied the deep gravely voice of a guard. He shuffled her out of the suite and along the corridor and through a secret panel, well hidden behind a tapestry. They emerged in the simply furnished safe room between the 3rd and 4th floor stairwell. The guard was at a loss explain his fears until the blast. Sleepy and somewhat disoriented, Luthien sat on a hard wooden chair. The guard left her then to make sense out of the disturbance. Less than an hour passed at his return and Luthien had not moved from her perch. She listened, expressionless, to his report and of the note found in her chambers. "Aye then, you may leave me here... begin Terrorism procedures." Instructed Luthien, she did not speak again to the guard as he left.Luthien blew out the candle and sat for a time in the lightless room. She wondered what would become of New Mountainside if.....no,when her time was up. The heirs were still so young. Weeks of searching for the Portal that would send her home to 'regenerate' had been in vain. Without it, well... she'd always been able to find it before, she really didn't know what to expect. Only that it would not be pleasant for her. She'd already weakenedconsiderably. Everything about her was becoming lackluster, from the gleam in her eyes to the shimmer of her hair. Her grip on the ivory hilt was becoming less sound. She wondered that Iain hadn't yet noticed the change.

The muffled voice of the strong man was barely audible over the blaring of the screen in the den. At least they had been able to get their own equipment here, Miguel thought, even if they didn't have the videos, tapes, etc., to play on it. He sat and watched another poor quality flick, reflecting on the bombing.

A shirt flew as his mind whirled. He had expected something much larger, much louder, much more visible than what he saw. He knew that it wasn't the normal amount of explosive he usually used, but they had so little left, he could barely manage to get that much together. Didn't matter now, though. Hopefully, Bones would come back in the room and tell him they cracked the foundation, and the whole castle dropped..or something.

*Beep*. Miguel clicked the "Quiet" button on the box, making the screen fall silent. Bones had just turned off his remote communications device, and was just staring at it now. Something bad must have happened.. those thoughts were pushed away quickly, so the Hispanic man could hear the report without any expectations, good or bad.

A minute passed. His dark brow creased into a frown. "Bones!" Miguel snapped, "put down that damn RCS and tell me what happened!" His body seemed to recoil from the breath blowing out of his lungs, pushing him a bit deeper into the couch. He hated it when the big lug's mind drifted off when he was supposed to be doing something important. This time, relaying the information was far more important than most jobs he had to do.

Bones glanced to his partner. He got fed up with the jerk's bossy attitude sometimes, and swore silently on many occasions that one day, he would pound his big head down between his shoulder blades. The only reason Bones tolerated him now was because of his mastery of mechanical stuff and explosives. What good were terrorists without bombs?

That was another thing that irritated him sometimes. Miguel was always calling them "mercenaries". Mercenaries? Right. True mercs attacked military targets- bases, armored vehicles, units of soldiers, patrols.. not civilian targets. Maybe New Mountainside was a fairly well-guarded target, but they had taken a number of jobs that were definitely aimed at some civilian population. Had he minded? Not in the least. Money was money, death was
death. He liked the former and didn't mind the latter one bit. But was it so hard for that idiot across the room to get it right?

"Bones!"

"Shaddap, Miguel!" Bones snapped right back and walked to the door. "Let's go to the tactics room, I want to show you exactly what happened."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pencil drew a circle on a picture of the castle's rear wall. "See this circle? That's approximately the size of the hole your precious plastiques made. We're still not sure on how many deaths there were. If there were any." The muscular man smirked at that, being sure to take advantage of the opportunity to tear into his partner. "All we're sure of is that Luthien was nowhere near the blast."

Miguel took the picture and grumbled. "That's it? Even that small box should have knocked down the parapet." He got up, rubbing his beer belly and walking around the room, staring at the circle. "Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable."

"Heh. Maybe the wall will weaken more and the roof over it will cave in. Doubt it, though."

"Well, thank you, Captain Obvious!" Miguel was getting more than a little peeved now. Between the other man's comments and his failure to do significant damage, he was about ready to take his Magnums out into the streets of that sad little town, and cap some people at random. His fist tightened, then released. The crumpled photo fell to the ground.

"So what now? You want to plan another one, or go back and try to finish the job?"

"Now..." The dark skin of Miguel's forehead folded as he considered the options. "We watch for any reactions from Luthien, or the surrounding areas. That will give us an idea of whether more work needs to be done in New Mountainside, not to mention what a likely next target will be."

"Basically, you're saying.." Bones started.

Miguel finished. "We wait."

The kitchen's cupboard doors banged and bent on their hinges in the freezing wintery wind. Sharp rock rubble was piled shoulder deep and a grit covered everything. Splattered vegetables mixed with pulverized scacks of flour from the larder...or what used to be castle's inhouse food stores. Once the dust settled 30 hands began to remove the tumbled masonry piece by piece. The voices called outabove the whistling wind... "Marret.... Marret........" they searched for the old woman in the wreckage. Each minute passed with lowering hopes..."Marret..". The Cook's name died unanswered on the biting wind. Finally grit and vegetable covered hands lifted away a chunk of the castle wall to reveal a part of the tattered, bloody apron. The searchers fell quiet and one by one their hats were removed and their faces drew sullen. Cook'y Marret, a virtual grandmother to them all was honored in a moment of silence...the banging cupboards and howling wind brought them out of the brief tribute. The women were guided away from the scene so that they need notwitness the gore. The residents of New Mountainside castle were veterans to disaster. They'd survived demon wars, coup d'etat, machine guns going wild in the royal suite, flood, near dicimation of their defenses. Grand conflicts these, wrought with the blood of kinsmen and the stuff of fireside legend. But each heart who had known and loved the jolly Marret was sickened by the news of her senseless murder and they would not glorify her demise or her murderers withsong or story. Due to the freezing season, work to repair the damage to the Kitchen would begin immediately.

The rattling footsteps approached with a definite lack of stealth. Miguel never turned as he spoke, gritting his teeth..

"Did you have your fun, Cemetary?"

"Yesss...quite enjoyable." The skeleton's voice sent shivers down the man's spine every time he heard it. How could she talk with no tongue? He really couldn't stand magic. He had no idea how to use it, nor did he care- proper use of explosives and high weaponry was enough to solve any problem, or so he thought. "I wonder if Luthien hasss ssseen the message..." The hiss was something he couldn't stand, either..why did she have to choose his
group to latch onto, become a part of?

"What message?" He never knew what she was up to until she told him. He was usually disgusted by it, quite a feat; doubly so, considering how often she had pulled it off. "All I knew was that you were aware of the assignment. The only reason I knew you actually came was because you never show up here when you skip."

"I left her a pretty little messssage.."

Miguel groaned slightly. What could she possibly have said.. "Which was?"

"'Somebody paid the price.'"

His eyes closed and opened quickly. Did he hear her right? She had to have put something more grotesque than *that*, didn't she?

"It was sssuch a pretty messssage...the man'sss blood ssspread well on the mirror..."

He just groaned again. No point in arguing, she was going to do what she was going to do. They couldn't change it, and they couldn't do anything about it. She was there.. might as well use her to their advantage. At least it didn't cost anything to keep her around- she didn't eat, didn't even breathe, and the only "pay" she wanted was to get a chance to slaughter some people. His headache was interrupted, however, by the door getting slammed
open.

"Hi, everybody! How's it going?" The tall, shaky man seemed awfully happy. Too happy for a mercenary, Miguel idly thought. "I loved vacation! I went to the beach- oh, all the babes! One, she had this skimpy little thing on, and I was in love! Then she saw me, I must've been staring too long. I got all embarrassed, but then she.."

By that time, the Hispanic man had gotten annoyed and walked over to the rambling maniac, slapping him upside the head with a snarl and a "Shut up, would ya?"

"Sorry Miguel. What I miss?"

"A less-than-successful mission, Mick. Nothin else." Bones remained suspiciously quiet as Miguel failed to divulge anymore information. All he did was stand and regard a man almost as thin as the skeleton girl behind him. Constantly twitching, due to some weird nervous condition (or so Miguel guessed), he could never shut up without help. Sometimes, it was a wonder he didn't have major brain damage from all the help he had gotten throughout his
life. Somehow, though, he managed to spy like no other- any time they needed some sort of information on a target, all they had to do was send out Mick, and he came back with exactly what they asked for.

"So what do we do now?" Mick's voice rattled through the room, giving Miguel the urge to smack him again. Taking a deep breath, he calmed down and laid out his next plan.

"I don't know how many of you remember, but some Sterenkov chick asked for help publically in taking back her spaceship from some group of weird Taloky-something or others. It was too much of a risk to take the job then- with the request open to anyone's eyes, the intended target would have been waiting. Now, though, would be a good time to see if she's still in need of our services. Anyone with a spaceship has to have access to some high-tech
stuff- we'll ask for some of that as pay."

"Other than that, I'm also considering an offer for an attack on Questrion. Like the mission to New Mountainside, the people making the offer is new to us, so I managed to get a damned good fee. They're a couple of odd ones.. some fat midget dwarf guy, and his buddy was really friggin tall. But we pull this off, we're gonna get some good cash, so it's something to think about."

He looked at the small group. "Now..if no one has any further suggestions, I'll be contacting the starship commander."
