Community Vote on Dueling Center Forum
Date: 5/20/1999 5:12 PM Central Daylight Time
From: GamesChanM
Shortly, the Duel of Fists, Duel of Magic, and Duel of Swords community will have the opportunity to vote on whether the Dueling Center should be split off from the RDIF and treated as a separate forum.
All players who have dueled in any of the three dueling areas during the current and the past two cycles will be eligible to vote. We realize that there are patrons who participate in these areas who do not duel or duel for recreation only. In order to ensure the integrity of the vote it must be handled in this manner.
A list of voters will be posted over the next day or two. If you feel you've been left off of the list improperly, send mail to GamesChanM. Once the names are posted we'll wait several days before beginning the voting period so word of the vote has time to circulate. Details on the voting process will accompany the list of voters. Don't send your vote until the voting period begins!
If the players are in favor of splitting off the Dueling Center into a separate forum, the forum would remain under the AOL Games Channel organization. It is also likely that a reorganization of the Dueling Center and its CL leadership would be undertaken as part of a split from the RDIF. Community input will be solicited if reorganization occurs.
An article containing the text of this post will also be placed in the three dueling areas for the benefit of community members who don't peruse the message boards.

Your compatriots in the Duel of Magic area have voiced several objections to splitting the entire Dueling Center off from the RDIF when it's only Duel of Swords players who are pushing for such a split.
I will keep track of the vote separately by Dueling area. However, we won't only move part of the forum out from under the RDIF if the vote goes that way. The logical grouping of the dueling games will remain intact.
Since the community appears to be pleased with the Duel of Fist side of the area, the only thing that would likely change is that Rask would report to someone other than FFGF Thorn if the Dueling Center is split off. There would continue to be shared links between the Dueling Center and the RDIF.

Mike,Thanks for agreeing to my request to keep track of the votes separately by dueling area. Ok, folks, this thing all started in Swords. That is where it is being discussed, and ultimately, with the size of their area, where this issue will be decided. Duplicate posts among the three areas are not allowed. Therefore, so Magic and Fists can be better represented, I will forward everyonea link to the Swords Boards.(If Thorn gives the ok.)Patrick

So that everyone can participate in one discussion and for the sake of sanity, here is a link to the Duel of Swords (DoS) messaging area. Be sure the DoS folder is highlighted prior to proceeding.
To locate the posts related to this topic, highlight the find by area on the bottom of the message window and chose either custom search or "word or phrase" inputting Community vote into the search block and click search.

After talking with Thorn over the weekend, and with Andrea today, the decision was made to allow the Dueling Areas to vote separately on remaining with the RDIF or splitting off. This means that if the DoF and DoM areas vote to stay with the RDIF, they will regardless of the DoS vote.
Thanks to Thorn for his flexibility in this matter!

Now it's time for me to say more. I'm writing this here because the DoS boards are overloaded with posts on the subject, and the content of this post would be more to the other duels. Seeing that I bring my characters over here more than to magic, I'm posting here. This idea about splitting the duels off due to the votes of the seperate dueling areas strikes me as a bad one. I think this would be a worse idea than any other that has been thought of. If you really think about all the problems that would be caused by splitting the duels up, then they'll probably come around and slap you in the face.Okay, judging from how it is now, it looks like the Duel of Swords people will vote to seperate. I believe the Duel of Magic people will vote to stay. I have no idea about the Fists crowd, because our people are usually more quiet and observant. Why would anyone want to take one of the duels away from the other two? This really sucks, in my mind. I think this should urge you to think even more about how you vote. I would rather not be seperated from any of the duels, but I think it is probably inevitable. I hope I am wrong in this, because I'd rather the brother/sister sports to stay together. It will probably be much harder for us to prosper if we are seperated from either of the otherduels. I really don't mean to put the Magic people down, but seeing as to how the Swords crowd is so much larger, I really don't think we should be torn apart. We depend on the swords people more than we really want to admit. I wish they could just take back the votes for the individual areas and make it all one vote. All one way, or all the other. I guess it won't be that way, so I hope you will take this in and think even more on theissues here.Do you really want to be seperated from either of the other two duels? I don't.Player o' BanePardon the rambling. I hope my point got across.

Bane,There are actually going to be two votes. After the first vote, there will be a second vote to determine if those who voted differently wish to join the others. It was important to have the vote seperate, because many were planning to vote No, simply because they resented being lumped together in the vote. Thus, in the first vote, areas may be able to register their disaproval, and in the second, may choose to remain with the other two areas. The seperate vote allows us to be specifically represented, and acknowledges our worth as an individual area. The principal this is based upon is the very same that the idea for the split is based on- representation. With the two votes, this is a win-win situation. With a lot of points recently being clarified by Mike in regards to the split, I am not so sure that your analysis of how the vote will go down is entirely accurate. Of course, atthe time you posted, I would have tended to agree with you.~~Let the Sun Shine In~~Patrick

Bane:
I don't usually post on this board, but I have long been a fan. About the two vote split:
I was the patron that asked for it, and it comes down to a simple reason. I think they are two very different issues.
The first issue is: do you - as a duelist, want a new forum devoted to promoting the sports.
The second issue comes up only if one or more areas vote to leave. At this point in time, we consider if we stay as a unit or not. For instance, lets say that DoM votes itself out, and DoS and DoF vote to stay. ACK, uhmmm...that is unbalanced.
At this point, prehaps, the DoS and DoF can say it's more important to stay as a Dueling Unit and leave with DoM. Hopefully a provision will be made for the DoM to consider if it really wants to go off by itself.
Again, I am the one who brought it up - because I have never seen the issue of splitting to be about DoS vs DoF vs DoM. And I find it bitter and unfortunate when some people do.

The way it's sounded, not just from Bane, but from lots of people who've talked about it (me included), nobody wants to see the issue be DoS vs. DoF vs. DoM. It's just that it looks as though it could wind up being that way if the areas vote differently. I'd say it's a safe bet that's something no one in their right mind would like to have happen. That's also why many of us have asked and hoped for a 2 of 3 deal- two duels vote for one or the
other, the third heads that way too.
