::a hooded figure walks up to the boards, his bright ruby eyes glowing eternally like flames as he tacks a note up on the boards::
Fellow Duelists,
This message is addressed mainly to the Warlords of the Duel of Swords. I have recently seen the title of Baron reduced to dust. It has completely lost the significance it once had except as a doorway to becoming Overlord. Nevertheless, there are those Barons who wish to return or retain the honor that their ring once had, such as Baroness Adeena Maeax, and to those Barons I thank you. Now to those Warlords who think that challenging simply because you want a ring or want to "challenge
yourself", I condemn you. To those Warlords I say you are unfit to hold the title of Baron and are only fit to even be Warlords because of your record within the rings. I am sick of the frequency of these challenges and as the Overlord I ask that all challenges for these worthless reasons cease from this point on. May my words ring through the heads of the greedy and the cowardly as words spoken by the supreme dueler of this sport until I am dethroned by one of the many cowards or one of the few duelers
still left with honor.
sincerely,

Overlord Dalamar,
It is with dismay that I read your posting. True, the Baron status has lost the awe and grandeur it once had. And true, many challenges have been pointless. But tell me, Overlord, what IS a good reason to challenge? How come no one jumped on Raiyko's back when he challenged only because it was his "anniversary"? How come nobody gave Kaprielle grief when she challenged Bapheloc, a Baron of only a few weeks? Given, I know little about Kaprielle and less about her intentions, but still..Also,
isn't it true that Adeena challenged DaveStro only because she wanted the ring? Yes it is, though there is a good reason that not many know about (Not many meaning the newer duelists in this sport); Therefore, could it be *possible*, Dalamar, the maybe even I (gasp!) may have a good reason besides a test of myself? Yes, it is.
Most of these challenges I disagree with (though I will not state publically which ones), because the warlords are fresh and not yet ready to serve in a position of such power. I agree, though, that there should be far better reasons to challenge a baron than just that the challenger simply "wants the ring". I, Dalamar, have my own personal reasons which are very important to me; and I think I've paid my dues in the two and a half years that I have served as a patron of this sport. What were
*your* reasons for challenging for the title of Overlord, Dalamar? And who are you to judge others and tell them their reasons aren't good enough?
Dalamar, you know little of me or my intentions, and though I know your post was not directed towards only, I know that you show disfavor upon my choice of challenging Adeena. So if you honestly doubt my goodwill towards gaining the ring, intercede in the challenge and prove by force that I am not yet ready to hold it. Until that time, Overlord Dalamar, judge me not, for I am no better nor no worse in spirit than any man in this sport.

::chuckles lightly at the response of the young man... wondering if perhaps he realizes that this response was misplace on him::
Kayne,
This letter was in no way directed to you or to anyone imparticular. My own personal feelings on your challenge are not material for the public boards, and I don't intend to discuss them because there is no reason to do so. My mention of Adeena was only an example of someone who I feel to be an honorable Baroness, not a shot at your challenge. So please, next time before you decide to jump on someone's back, especially the Overlord's, make sure you understand what you're responding to. In addition,
as to my reasons for challenging, they were not simply because I wanted to be Overlord.. there were other reasons, which also are not material for these boards as I stated when I challenged. Now, you ask who am I to say what is a good reason to challenge and what is not? Well frankly, Kayne.. if anyone is in a position to say such things I believe it is myself. Am I not the highest representative of this sport? Have I not been a dueler here for 4 years now? Frankly I think that I am in a position to
make the general statement I made. To say that any one specific person's reasons are bad would be different, but I *did not do that*. So take your anger over the situation and move it on to a different target because I do not have to take that from you.
sincerely,
Lord Dalamar Ar'Daumon

Aye, I agree Milord Overlord. Though I am only a lowly commoner as the Duels count things, I do know somewhat of Honor and Nobility. I have seen some few persons here in RhyDin who are worthy of the title of Warlord and of Baron. The problem appears when one realizes that it is a matter of personality that I speak to, as opposed to Dueling skill. Most of those who are of the character to be noble are ranked below Warlord, many are commoners. Though it matters little in the grand scheme of things, my
support is firmly behind the Overlord.

Farek,
This has nothing to do with me being challenged, and believe it or not... there is something that I can do about it when I get challenged or when certain Barons get challenged. That does not mean that I would choose to do so, but it means that I have the choice should I wish to take it.

Hey, I'm just a swordsman and all, but when I hear dueling referred to as a sport, I think of it as such. The Overlord and Barons don't actually -rule- anything by that title, do they? And in any other sport, championship matches are played out and the title goes to the better duel, just like that. Reasons like "You killed my father" or "You knocked up my sister" are nice and all, but not neccessary to a sport that all to often people take too seriously, and friendships and relationship have been torn
apart over dueling and its politics. In any other sport, that would be considered a tragedy, but it seems that the Overlord likes it that way.
Not every challenge need be a grudge match, but a test of skill in a great sport.

Overlord Dalamar...
I don't know you, I've never spoken with you, I have no argument with you until I read this "rambling" of yours. Now it goes without saying that it is merely your opinion, not fact. Your ranking does nothing to make it more true than an opinion from someone like me, unrespected in the rings and so far never risen about the rank of M@A.
You seem to feel you're in a position to judge whether someone is "unfit to hold the title of Baron", because you are, in your own words, "the highest representative of this sport" and "the supreme dueler of this sport". It's far from my place to judge your skill with the blade...Goddess knows if you and I were to duel I'd lose in about two rounds
::scribbles in the margin next to this:: You say it's not possible, than you've never seen me duel
but I don't feel it's your right at all to order these challenges to stop. You didn't display any honor by imposing your views of honor on the rest of the arena.
And I suppose that you don't find Huma's challenge to you "honorable" because he just wanted to have your rank.
Those without honor shouldn't judge who has it.....

It is nice to see you do indeed still have interests in the Swords. I was frustrated by your silence and absence up to this point. But, I agree with what you've written, Overlord. I applaud you for having the gumption to speak on what can no doubt be seen as a volatile issue.
You have my support on this.

Ten peer wins.....reason enough to challenge for a ring
Fifteen peer wins...reason enough to challenge the overlord
Cowardly or not....the right of challenge is there, and if the defender loses...then it obviously wasn't meant to be.

My fellow duelers, and not just fellow Warlords. Some of you know me, some do not. It matters little to me. Though I duel little these days, if at all, I find challenging for the heck of it as angering as Dal. Someone earlier said that the Barons do not rule anything..true..but mayhaps that is because you cannot make decisions from musical chairs. And that is what has been happening lately. Except for a select few, they Barons change with each moon, and not just one, mind you. I myself have held
enough peer wins to challenge for many months now. Have I? No. Why? If you care to know...because at first I did not feel worthy of holding the rank, having only been dueling for a few months..and then later because I did not see fit to take a ring from someone I thought a good Baron/ess. As it stands, only Ellisa is free, and were I to challenge her because I wished to hold a ring once..or just to see if I could..I know I could. I have beaten most, if not all, at least once. At least a moral victory
against the others. Ellisa has beaten me, as have many others. Who am I to tell who can challenge? No one. Just a man. But one that does not take forfeit wins..I even lost my rank once because of that. I do not pound the lesser ranks with my fancies, even though I have the right. Ah..ramblings of Alec you say? Maybe so. Dem is right, anyone can challenge, if they have the peers. But anyone can kill, if they have the weapon. Does that mean they should? No. Does that mean they can? Surely. I do not pass
judgement on anyone. I will just use my peers to remove them from the rank they managed to attain. But at least I will let them enjoy a moment in the sun. Who knows, I could be wrong, they may make a great Baron/ess. Nothing is wrong with waiting. The Rings are always there, only the hand that bears them changes. So, take the time to learn the past of the DoS, and the present. Do not challenge for a Ring that you have no knowledge of its history. How can you call winning it something special if all you
plan to do is treat it like some piece of jewelry. Think about that...

::smacks Perri upside his head:: That's one of the crudest things that someone can say... What's wrong with the word pregnant?
As to the topic at hand... Challenging for the simple reason you've collected enough peer wins is flimsy... Challenging to test yourself... regain something you've and so forth are good ones.
It's like buying something you finally have the money for because it's a status symbol then finding out you haven't got a flipping clue what to do with it.

I must agree with what Perri said on this subject. To me, DoS is a sport. It is also a community, but foremost in my mind a sport. Some duel for fun, some for the challenge(note: not "challenge" as in for title, but "challenge" as in difficulty, physical/mental trial) of the sport, some for other reasons. For those who duel for fun, don't criticize those who are in it to challenge themselves. What right do you have questioning other people's values, as long as they don't infringe on your rights? If
they want to challenge, they should go ahead. Those who duel for the sport and the challenge of it, don't think that the others are in it for the same reason you are.
I myself greatly enjoy dueling for the challenge it brings me, and I almost always try to seek a greater challenge. I will generally challenge for Baron whenever I can, as that provides a difficult task for me. If I win, I may remain as Baron. If I wish to turn around and challenge the OL, I may, not to say I will. If I wish to retire, I may. No one can say what I do is wrong, unless it is outside the realm of the rules.
I like seeing all these challenges. I always have believed in the turn-over of titles, with those destined and talented to keep theirs. Those that keep their titles show they deserve them. Those that lose, showed they perhaps were not as deserving. That is the whole point of challenging. The more challenges, the better idea we have of who deserves to be Baron and who doesn't.
All those who think there needs to be a big reason behind challenges, I don't disagree with you. If you feel you need the reason, who am I to argue with you? However, I don't like anyone arguing with me that I or anyone else needs a good reason to challenge.
People have different opinions. Learning to accept that fact will probably lead towards a greater understanding between us all, and lessen the amount of arguements we get started.
Enough writing for now. Lets see how you all respond.
