Shakedown or Takedown?

He had no idea why he even went through with it. But there he was, stamping his feet in the dirt behind the pump shed outside the Outback, waiting for someone that he hadn't even seen.

The letter came as somewhat of a shock, business had been slow since he had started refusing work offers to persue his own goals. His available funds hit an all-time low and he couldn't afford the tools he'd need to finish the job. Looking for a quick opportunity, the offer had provided him with a perfect solution.

"... a thief of impeccable abilities, one such as Anubis should prove little difficulty..."

Whoever this person was, they had provided him with exactly what he needed without revealing their identity. With a target and a chance to research, he could decide what to do about the offer before actually being contacted. Usual channels of course, most of his patrons never wanted to meet face to face... a wise decision on their part since the jobs he took usually carried extreme concequences for failure, both on his and the buyer's part. The
targets almost always wanted to kill everyone involved once the deed was done.

Anubis was no different. Tareth had felt somewhat of a need to confront him with the issue, if only to see if there was a better offer available. It had worked out a few times before, inform the target and get paid *not* to steal from them. Classic shakedown. It worked perfectly, after the expected threats calmed down Anubis had offered 30 grand for the privelage of not being stolen from. That would cover almost half of what Tareth would need
without putting a strain on his schedule. Not too bad.

He had mostly made up his mind. Tonight he'd tell the mysterious buyer that he wasn't available and turn the offer down.

Unless it was something he couldn't refuse.

But he didn't want to think about that. Now wasn't the time to be derailed from his track of vengeance. Besides, diving back into the perils of the slaving industry wasn't something that he thought particularly tantilzing. The conversation with Anubis last night, most notibly the part where he was reminded of being bought and sold himself, had aroused nightmares of the past to haunt him in his sleep last night.

Shaking his head and raking fingers back through his platinum forest of hair, he turns out to watch the smoke drift from the rooftops of Rhydin again... waiting.

In the early morning, Dawn paced the halls of the Rainbow Palace. It was now her home, her mother having given it up to the girls when she moved in with Neris. It was all for the better, Dawn had many important things to do that she simply did not want her mother to know about.

The results of the meeting tonight would be one such thing. She had heard tales of this man through the grapevine, and she was coming of the age where she had to make her own fortune. He would be instrumental in her further instruction, if all went well.

Cautious, she had first sent Tareth an anonymous letter requesting his services. Had she sent it in her own name, she knew she would have been dismissed as an idiot; she knew how things worked. The letter was short and to the point, requesting his services to procure a slave. Any slave. She didn't want the slave, really, she wanted to steal one to serve as a call to the master.

She wanted him to know who she was. It was an ironic smile that was painted across her face as she thought of the man she sought to get in contact with. Her mother's former master. He wouldn't look at her twice if she merely went up to him. She had to do something to get his attention.

Get his attention she would. But first she had to have the slave to approach him. Tareth had returned a message at, ironically, her mother's information trading shop. Jaycy hadn't been on duty that night, so Tareth shouldn't know who was behind operations there. He wanted to meet her tonight. For what, she had no clue, but she was willing to go, especially if he had the desired item.

The day passed slowly, and Dawn's mind whirled with all the possibilities of tonight's outcome. Tareth would have the slave, she would go to Anubis with her, and request training from the master slaver. For good or bad, she would have Anubis' attention.

Finally, as life slowed with the coming of evening, Dawn set out from the Rainbow Palace, to meet Tareth, and begin the next stage in her plan.
