Challenge on Baronial Ring 3
From: darkness2@aol.com (Darkness2)
Date: 16 Jan 1998 23:43:08 EST
::walks up to the post board and tacks it up, hoping that it will go well::
I Darkness2, after careful decision, chose that I will challenge DarkAxe for his ring, I have no political reason for this, I just think that this will be a worthy test of my skills, to see if I can wrest the ring from a Baron, I hearby submit 10 Peer Wins to show my worthiness to challenge the Baron:
1. PKardinal, WarLord, 1/9/98, 5-3 in 6 rounds, RDI Reiver
2. Dakich, WarLord, 1/9/98, 5-2 in 8 rounds, RDI Golden
3. HumaDragbn, Baron, 1/9/98, 5-4 in 10 rounds, RDI Scad
4. Falablah, WarLord, 1/11/98, 5.5-3 in 12 rounds, RDI Clo
5. Sir Cetran, WarLord, 1/11/98, 5-0 in 6 rounds, RDI Clo
6. Quan Fei, WarLord, 1/11/98, 5-2 in 5 rounds, RDI Bird
7. MidnytBlue, WarLord, 1/11/98, 5-2 in 7 rounds, RDI Bird

>>I Darkness2, after careful decision chose that I will challenge DarkAxe"
Not only does Mr. Al-Thor not know my name, but he himself admitted to me that he only challenged me because someone else beat him to the punch in challenging Luthien. Hardly a careful decision, it would seem to me.
I welcome the challenge as hopefully my third defense, though I am sick to my stomach at the recent lack of respect shown to title holders by newbie warlords who think they have a right to march in and challenge the week after they receive their warlord status and garner the 10 necessary peer wins.
Ulath.

::sigh:: Well, the last two duels on his peer win list ... I reff'd those only mere hours ago.
Does anyone else feel this is jumping the gun a little?
I'm sorry...but I must protest.

I agree with Luth, far as I know, the peer wins aren't valid till next week. So, this challenge is premature.

Minor correction, but the point is not lost.
9. Sartan Z, WarLord, 1/16/98, 5-2 in 6 rounds, RDI Rogue
10. Harris4801, WarLord, 1/16/98, 5-2 in 8 rounds, RDI Reiver
Obviously I did not call these duels. But..
These are two more of his peer wins that he didn't list that I reff'd just hours ago, that he would've listed if he'd needed to, therefore they are relavent to my angst. The ones by Reiver and Rogue are the same Date, which is my point of concern. Rediculous.
Darkness2 def. Gnort DT, 5 - 3 in 8 rounds. ( 1/16/98 ) RDI Luth
Darkness2 def. Jakvaltrds, 5 - 3 in 13 rounds. ( 1/16/98 ) RDI Luth

::scratches his head as he reads the offer of challenge::;
Darkness, do you have any idea what it means to be a Baron in the Duel of Swords?
Do you know anything of the history of those rings?
I ask you , why do you do this? Is there something you can do to enrich the history of this realm? I saw you duel a warlord this evening, and while the caller of the duel was still working his shift, you walked to the boards and wrote this alledged carefully thought out challenge to a Baron that has been a part of this arena some 5 plus years. I do not question your skill in the ring, but that of your reasoning for this challenge. As far as I know,
and believe me, if I am wrong, I will be corrected, your challenge should be void. The standings for the duels you fought this evening were not even recorded, much less posted to the boards. Perhaps you might stand back and see what this place really is before trying your hand at a Barons ring.
I can't speak to your motives, but your zealousness is most apparent. I hope you will take the time to reconsider your actions after the verdict is handed down.
When I heard that you had to ask the caller if he had record of your duel with Philip Kardinal last week I was very disappointed. I have been here a mere 14 months. In that time I have challenged twice. Both times I was defeated but my reasons were made known and were not because Dueler got the one I wanted to get ! Friend, I have record of every date, round, and move of every dueler I have faced in these rings. I would never have to question a
caller as to the date and results of a match if I had my heart set on a ring, Thus the reasons for my questioning your motives.
I do hope you will be more considerate to those you challenge in the future.
Respectfully
Seamus MacDonnaugh

Seamus...one word...BRAVO.
As most know, I usually don't post on these boards often. I choose to remain quiet normally. My mother always told me not to say anything about anyone unless I had something nice to say, thus my silence. But, in light of two challenges issued in as many days, I feel it's time to speak up and piss some people off. Darkness2 has challenged Ulath, and Dueler has challenged Luth. Both being relatively new warlords. It is in their right to challenge,
BUT.....kids need to learn some respect and patience. Just what in the hell do you two want a ring for anyway? Fame? Respect? Bah, you can't get either of these by mearly gaining a Baron's ring. They are earned over time. Something you two have not had much of here in RyDin, or the arena I would guess, from lack of sense enough to wait till the next postings are put up. We all know that, when you get enough wins to gain the next rank you do NOT get
to use that rank untill the standings are posted...so, peer wins go accordingly. They don't count till posted. I am also ticked for the reason Darkness has challenged Ulath, because Luth has already been challenged. Would you jump off the north side of the Brooklyn bridge cause somebody has already jumped off the south side? What was I babbling about? Oh yeah, In my opinion, these two challenges should be nullified AND Dueler and Darkness should both
have thier right to challenge takin away for the rest of the cycle, although it only has a couple weeks left, it would serve a good example I think. Anyway, I appologize to anyone who can't understand my mindless babble, I do this from time to time.

Well said, Seamus.
I might add, further:
Kalamere ar'Din, in all his many years in these rings, has never issued challenge for a Baron's Ring.
I, myself, have done so only once.
If memory serves, Billy Ray's rings have been the result of tournament victories as well.
Young warlords, seeking respect, I ask you: what class of duellist to you hope to be counted among as the years pass?

For a fleeting moment of an equally fleeting trip to the arena, he steps forward on the wooden planks to examine the various lines and dots that compose the DoS message board.
It takes a mere minute to absorb and decipher the words, and he sketches an involuntary nod at the advice and arguements proposed.
He pivots as if to turn, yet his personal demon of vanity posesses him and he remains, withdrawing a wrinkled, yellow scrap of paper from a vague interior fold of his raven cloak as he settles back into a square stance.
His right scribbles furiously upon the yielding media, and within moments a small group of words appear upon the otherwise insipid paper.
Those who question a man's right to challenge must also question their own.
Seamus, what could you enrich the rings with?
I propose that rhetorically, with a pinch of sarcastic leer which is so pronounced of one so "lucid" as I.
Yet I digress, so I feel I shall state my purpose at this point. Darkness, Rand, or whomever you are, put a little more thought into your brash decisions before immediately deferring to your erratic whims.
I am thoroughly disgusted by all these challenges, though my reasons for such shall remain in obfuscation for the time being.
Seraph.

::Reads the postings, and realizes how Ulath must feel, being called DarkAxe. Realizes if he were Baron and someone were to challange him and refer to him as "Quick" or "QuickVarMG" he would be thoroughly insulted... so he posts::
Rand,
If you planned on challenging one, and somsone else challenged him/her beforehand, maybe you should wait for the challenge to take place. There is no need to challenge as soon as you recieve the ten peer wins.
I admit, I too, challenged when I recieved just a little over ten peer wins. My reasons for challenging, I believe, were legitimate. I was dueling for nine months before I reached warlord status, and I challenged because I believe my time for a chance came. Moreover, I challenged someone because we never dueled before, and when you don't know another's strategy, the challenge becomes a true duel of skill.
My point is, please be patient, and let time take its toll for you, as it has for many others.
Respectfully,

::adds his two little newbe cents which dont count much around here::
I have to side more with Darkness2 and Dueler on this one. Over the years this sport has made respect harder and harder to obtain. The veterans of veterans here feel they can voice their oppinion and everyone says yeah that sounds right. They dont have to deal with the issue of respect because of their WoL, times as barons, times as overlord, or how many years they have been here. Anyone questions their respect and they use them as defense. As for
newbe duelers we feel the urge to become part of the grand history of DoS that the veterans have formed. Therefore, the newbe warlords rack up 10 peer wins in a week, and issue a challenge in hopes of being noticed as a skilled dueler. I tried the same thing and have fallen in rank becuase of it. But in Darkness' case he got to challenge a baron and what does he get? No respect. Its a lose, lose situation for us newbes. After a couple years ((if AOL
still exists)) after raising WoL to about 50, doing good in warlord's torneys, and not having any serious arguements with veterans, then we will get respect. But until then i greatly despise the lack of respect of skilled newbe duelers in the sport of DoS.
((As for the issue of the last couple PW's being void, i dont know the rules on this issue and therefore will not say anything about it))

Being one who feels it necessary to speak, partily due to the fact that I enjoy the sound of my own voice and like to read what I have written as the case may be, I must comment, not on the challenge itself, but the wording of said challenge.
Darkness2 has recieved a lot of grief on refering to the Baron 'DarkAxe' as such. I know to most, this seems a grand display of lack of respect. I realize that this may be the case, but it may not be. Unfortunately for some, myself included, our parents seemed to not count for the fact that in a world such as Rhydin, there might be others who share our name or even nickname.
Ulath, you are fortunate as are most of the other barons. Myself, Darkness, and quite a few others are not so lucky, Alhough I believe I am currently the only Daemon, I am not the only one called "Dae" As any who have been around as of late might have noticed. It gets confusing in the arena with 30 someodd people talking to 3 different "Dae"s. I know that for clarity in room conversation, I call people by the title
they have chosen, that distingushes them from the other Rands, Daes, etc of Rhydin. Or some shortened version thereof. Many a night, have I dueled "Quick"((Fancily even)), or "Tiny", or "Jak", or a host of others. Does that make me a bad person? Do I lack respect?
I believe on the same subject, "Dal" ((A name like Elminster which requires no further indicator as to whom I am speaking of)) once reffered to Topaz Eludes as "Tiny" Does this lack of respect carry over to him for that incident. No. And it should not. I know the responses that will be written saying that "this wasn't in the arena, but a formal challenge". Save them. If you wish it be required, I suggest you change the guidelines for a
challenge at that meeting that "Luth" has called. Until then, nowhere does it state that the missive must contain the Lord's ((Or Lady's)) given name. I mean for all it's worth, the mail would have never reached Ulath, as even the postman who delievers mail to him every day only knows him as DarkAxe.

Lord Dalegate~
While your words do have the ring of truth about them to a certain extent, they are sadly confused one one very salient front:
Respect has not a thing to do with the titles one holds. There are duelers with gaudy records, duelers who've held title, who don't command half the respect certain commoners do in this arena.
Further, what you are saying, in essence, is this - what we have here are people trying to draw attention to themselves, figuring that if they become a Baron, everyone will heed them.
It doesn't happen that way. This sport hasn't made respect hard to obtain. One's blade might earn respect, but the wielder must earn that outside the rings, as it always has been.

I myself, am disappointed, though not surprised by these Challenges. From recent trips to the Arena, I've have heard Darkness and Dueler ask many, many question's of 'How to Challenge'. I have been here over a year now, and have made only one Challenge match in that time. I earned a Baronal Ring, the Fourth, shortly after my coming to my Warlord status, but that was due to a victory in the Tournament, near coming one year ago.
There have been a few duelists who Challenge on a consistant basis. The two names that come into mind first are Lutpon and Jeff, since both hold about six Challenges to Barons. Is this any differant than Challenging the moment after obtaining ten Peer Wins? It is not my place to tell, but it is upseting to see a couple of skilled duelists think, that it would be in their best interest to Challenge for Baron rather than stay around their newly aquired
rank and become Commen amoung those that share the same skill level as you.
One thing I might ask to Darkness and Dueler... What do you hope to accieve with optaining the Baron's Ring? An immediate challenge by someone who could easily crush you with a blade? Perhaps. Mabye, it is gaining the record for defending the most times, or, holding you ring for loner than any other. I shall tell you of one thing that it will not grant you, and that is respect amoung the Warlord's of the DoS, for most of us are not foolish enough to
be fooled by such numbers and such titles.
Perhaps you should re-thik your challenge, perhaps you should be allowed to be slaughtered in the rings.
I have nothing more to say.

Grateful Warlord for being defeated by Deagarth in his Challenge for the Eighth Ring
P.S. Ian, Billy Ray had earned the First Ring from a Tournament Victory, the Fifth Ring, from defeating Raiyko in a Challenge.
