Or, perhaps, what's -right- with the Arena.

Ahem...

Here's a novel idea:

Watch the challenge match. If he truly is not worthy of the ring, he'll lose. And, if by some bizarre twist of Fate he isn't worthy of the ring and wins, well, he probably won't keep it for very long. Catch my drift?

So, Ulath and Darkness, duel well and duel with honor. May the most worthy win. :)

Nameless One:

You ask me to clarify my meaning, and I will do so gladly.

Those who hold the opinion that the rank of Baron means nothing but an extra fancy hold, by definition, no concern whatsoever for the tradition, history, and character of these rings. When the population of the arena with this opinion grows, the tide of "Warlord seeking Warlord!," "I need a peer win," grows with it, and the rude, disrespectful nonsense that the irrational NEED to get in seven duels a night causes multiplies like a cancer.

I would think this a patently obvious and logical observation; I'll assume you merely wished me to clarify so there would be no confusion as to my thinking.

Lord Tynsdale,

Thank you. That is precisely what I thought you meant. That kind of foolish nonsense that some Warlords may use to make a challenge as soon as possible I do not subscribe to. In fact, in my experience I have not seen anyone do it. I believe i have only seen one or two signs in my time dueling here that said "Warlord to duel peer", and I have never seen anyone beg for fast duels, although I have seen duelers of various abilities, ranks, and
experiences beg for duels when they have been waiting 10 minutes or more waiting for one. I would not think that this would qualify under what you describe.

What you describe is certainly something that may happen, but do you have first hand knowledge of this? Since your retirement I doubt you have spent all that much time in the arena, although I may be wrong, for I am not present every second it is open. However, I would think that it is not very likely that for all the I am present it does not happen, and the times you are present it does. But, of course, I may be wrong.

All,

On the subject of history, there certainly was a time when the history of the rings was extremely short. Did these duelists need to have a feel for history as much as we do now? Certainly, when the rings were only a couple months old, no one could be challenging to gain something that had been a piece of history. Of course, they themselves became a part of history, although, did they know it would happen? If they did not, what reason did
most have to challenge. The histories normally merely say that they "lost on their first defense to so-and-so". A few mention personal or political reasons, but the majority do not. If we are to regard these figures historically, should we not scrutinize them as to their reasons? Why should we look upon the figures of the past, when their reasons for acquiring rings were often as shallow as those you accuse of some these days? I am not saying
*everyone* has shallow reasons, but certainly not everyone did. If I am wrong on this point, someone please enlighten me.

Therefore, how are we supposed to know why we challenge for a ring? If the histories are completely wrong, then we will be misguided when we are trying to follow other's example. Perhaps there should be a section of the histories that list the important challenges, and the figures that shaped the sport. Those coming through the ranks have only the uniform histories that treat most everyone equal. We should somehow separate out those that we
should emulate, so that those unknowledgeable of the history can easily learn it.

I believe I have written way too much in regards to these two challenges than I planned on. However, I believe there is still a lot more that has come to my mind due to the outcry against them that I have yet to be able to put on paper. Once again, should anyone have a specific concern they wish me to address, leave me a note in my arena mailbox.

Thank you for your time,

((This post is written in the event Darkness' peer wins somehow end up valid))

Here's thge problem with the old folk here...It's called the double standard. I'm old by comparison and usually side with the old school but Ulath, to take one of Sid's lines, is swallowing his own foot here. Take a look at the xerox's:

Gnim's challenge:

<< ::Rips a page out of his notebook, tacking it up to the boards::

Fellow duelers of the Arena....

I, Gnimish Gnimoi, former Overgnome of the DoS and currently first ranked Warlord, so hereby issue a challenge to the Loyal Baroness Adeena, Aka, the Red Zealot...

In case you're wondering, no I don't have a really good reason for this challenge...I've always considered Adeena somewhat of a friend, and there are no political motives here...I just wanted something to do with all these freakin' peer wins....

Oh, and here's ten of 'em...>>

Ulath's Response to Adeena being insulted by the challenge:

<<Adeena,
Perhaps Gnim is more interested in a friendly rivalry than in a grudge match with a renegade. Perhaps you are taking that ring too seriously, and perhaps Gnim understands better than you the necessity of renegade barons.
I do not take sides in fights, but I think it's unfair to Gnim to end a friendship as the two of you must have over such a silly thing as a challenge. I wish you both good luck, and I hope things work out for the best.

Ulath.>>

Darkness' challenge:

<<::walks up to the post board and tacks it up, hoping that it will go well::

I Darkness2, after careful decision, chose that I will challenge DarkAxe for his ring, I have no political reason for this, I just think that this will be a worthy test of my skills, to see if I can wrest the ring from a Baron, I hearby submit 10 Peer Wins to show my worthiness to challenge the Baron:>>

Ulath's response:

<<Not only does Mr. Al-Thor not know my name, but he himself admitted to me that he only challenged me because someone else beat him to the punch in challenging Luthien. Hardly a careful decision, it would seem to me.

I welcome the challenge as hopefully my third defense, though I am sick to my stomach at the recent lack of respect shown to title holders by newbie warlords who think they have a right to march in and challenge the week after they receive their warlord status and garner the 10 necessary peer wins.

Ulath. >>

Wait a minute!!!

Ulath tell Adeena, a baroness of much longer standing than himself, that she should suck it up and just fight because it's just a game....even though Gnim just needs ta' blow some peer wins yet he flips his lid because Darkness doesn't write his name on the challenge? Come on Ulath...yer full of crap son. Unless all that talk about "just bein' a game" is just that...as sayin'. It ain't all that big a deal till
it happens to you....so next time why not support a long standing baron when ya' can understand where they're comin' from.
Gnim was *way* out of line with his challenge yet everyone backs him because he's old school, this darkness kid tries ta' be nice and possibly screws up yet ya'll jump on his backside....I think ya'll need ta' grow up or at least be a little less lopsided in yer judgements. The kid wants a shot....he'll either make it or break it who really cares?!

After all Ulath, isn't it "just a game"?

After further investigation through records with no real purpose, I have found this interesting piece of information, taken from *last week's* results:

Darkness2 def. Dakich, 5 - 2 in 8 rounds.
Darkness2 def. Falablah, 5.5 - 3 in 12 rounds
Darkness2 def. HumaDragbn, 5 - 1 in 7 rounds.
Darkness2 def. Kingphisch, 4.5 - 3.5 in 15 rounds.
Darkness2 def. MDickey586, 5 - 1 in 7 rounds.
Darkness2 def. MidnytBlue, 5 - 2 in 7 rounds.
Darkness2 def. Perrinis, 5 - 3 in 8 rounds.
Darkness2 def. PKardinal, 5-3 in 6 rounds
Darkness2 def. Quan Fei, 5 - 2 in 5 rounds.
Darkness2 def. Raiyko, 5 - 4 in 10 rounds.

As I'm fairly sure all of these duelers are Warlords (or Barons), thus it appears that our friend Rand Al-Thor had 10 peer wins long before he posted his challenge. It appears that he merely used his most recent peer wins when announcing his challenge, which just happened to be a few hours old.

Let this be a mere piece of information that appears most of the public did not realize until now. I am doing this to possibly help the tide of public opinion, which is now partially baseless due to this new information.

::reads Dueler's latest posting and can't help but correct him....having checked the standings as of 1-15-98::

Dueler,
Falablah is listed as a Grand Master, not a Warlord so that duel doesn't count as a Peer win.

::wanders away, giggling a bit, knowing she should just stay out of this and watch others around the arena flame the poor soul for his error::

I believe that Falablah was a Warlord last week when he was defeated by Rand Al-Thor. However, in case he wasn't, more results from last week:

<<Darkness2 def. Sir Cetran, 5 - 0 in 6 rounds
Darkness2 def. Skyler JC, 5 - 3 in 10 rounds.>>

I am sorry to not have checked on every single duelist I listed. However, the two above are warlords. I wish not to make this any bigger than it is. I didn't want the facts of my research to be discussed, but the implications. Thank you.

Let it be known, if when ya defeat a person and he/she is a warlord, he/she may be listed months later, even if he/she has lost his/her rank since.

Sorra Sarana, if ya were lookin' ta get Dueler screwed outta his challenge, ya lose ::shrugs::

::was going to stay out too, but....::

How so? What did the previous weeks standings state Falabah's rank was? If it was warlord then he dueled as a warlord for the following weekend.. the standings are posted to reflect the rank in effect "AFTER" the weekend.. meaning... you duel as a warlord and you remain a warlord for the full weekend of dueling even if your WoL is not right until the next standings are posted.. then you rank drops.. any Peer wins gained on you as a Warlord during
that time are not deleted because you dropped rank. That would be punishing the other dueler for your rank loss.

Does that make any sense?
