Commoner you may be Tass...lowly is something you are not.
Along with what the nobler here have written, I'll add a vote for the voice of greed. Greed is one thing, nothing wrong with that. Not everyone here wants to be all huffy and puffy like allot of these old farts that pour in and out of here. Some of us just a want a piece of the pie.
However, in wanting that piece, ask yourself this:
If you get it this way, If you treat the Barony as simple prize for getting lucky in the ring...then thats all you will win my friends...just a simple prize for getting lucky.
But I'll tell you one thing...I get luckier than that on a regular basis, and have nicer jewelry.
If you go after the ring for honor, with honor...then that is what you'll win.
Greed is not such a bad thing, and nobility is a bit overrated....but I'd rather be a commoner whom even the Barons respect...than a Baron whom even the commoners look down upon.
I guess it all depends on what you're after.

Friends,
As always, I feel compelled to throw my feeling on any subject into the ring of discussion, and though I'm sure you're all sick of hearing my insults, complaints, and statements of pompous superiority (not to mention bombosity) I'm going to do it anyway. I have been a member of the Duel of Swords community for over five years now if my depleting memory serves me correctly. That is not to say I have been present that entire time (I took two
*long* leaves of absence). Nevertheless, I earned the respect of my peers when the rings were young, and it has amazed me how each time that I've returned to a younger generation of duelists, that respect has carried over without question. Yet, I digress.
I have challenged merely twice in my history here. Once for a Baronial Ring and once for the title of Overlord. Never did I challenge solely because I had the wins to do so, nor because I wanted to be part of the elite.. because I knew that wasn't how you become respected and part of the "elite". I fought tooth and nail with every respected Warlord I could find when I first made rank. I entered countless unofficial tournaments when Valmion used
to host the weekly Questrion tourneys on Sundays. I imparted my knowledge on a number of my friends (Luthy to name the most famous of them), and I basically did everything I could to make myself a respected and integral member of the community.
That, my friends, is how you earn respect (Though a few impressive victories here and there doesn't hurt). That is why, despite the feelings of many of my peers, I have chosen to make myself the perennial road-block in most Warlord's challenges. Whether people like it or not, I've seen almost everyone who ever dueled here come and go, I've seen countless challenges, I've lost to the best and beat the best, and I think I'm as qualified as anyone
to decide when a challenger is doing the right thing in their challenge or not. While I may be biased because the person they're challenging is loyal, that's just the way life is. So, I'm going to continue shutting down as many challenges as I deem unworthy or superfluous in the hopes that one day people will take a hint and see that maybe they should save their challenge until they have a pure and honest reason for doing so, and then everything will
be alright. Then again, maybe I'm being ridiculously idealistic.

Funny..Ulath support Gnim in Gnim's rude challenge but Gnim backstabs Ulath in his crybaby letter of Respect. Business as usual.
If this letter had been written by someone who's actually been a real part of the sport for 5 years I may endorse it but since it comes from someone who's abused the rank of baron twice already I find it nothin' more than double talk. Ulath screwed the DoS barony twice and now he's cryin' about a lack of respect....funny that. Treats the ring like his own redheaded stepchild but wants respect....bullcrap.
He gets challenged a few times and cries wolf...but retards like Gnimish challenge just ta' waste peer wins and "it's ok by uncle Ulath". That's creatin' old school versus new and that ain't right in this situation. For the socond time in one day I'm sidin' with the newer duelers on this one. If Ulath can abuse tha barony and Gnim can make challenges that have no meaning (Rp or otherwise) than so can the new kids if they want. Ya' reap what ya'
sow old timers and if ya' wanna ruin the sport like this then ya' better expect the newer warlords ta' follow suit.

I agree completely with Sartan, sharing the same sentiments.. even though I've spent upwards of a year now in the rings, I still feel rather novice to the sport in comparison to many of the beloved dinosaurs of the sport. Like Sartan, I hold a relatively respectable record as a dueler, being a warlord in a sport with scores upon scores of duelers who have no rank whatsoever. And like Sartan, the unnamed dueler, Ulath and Jeff alike, I want to be a
participant in the DoS, as much as my time and skill will allow. I want to challenge, to have my names in the histories, and to have the respect of my peers... And it's obvious that one of the best ways for a up-and-coming Warlord to make a name for himself is to take part in the Baronial Circus, and all the messy politics that everyone loves to hate.
However, if challenger cannot understand and act on the traditions and courtesy of the sport, this complicates the matter... One of the benefits of the Houses that have made dueling become so partisan is that many new duelers have learned the ropes by example from these groups and the more experienced duelers.
Thus, I request that instead of damning those new challengers, we as a community give them the due acknowledgement as fellow duelers(Duelers, that by gaining 10 peer wins, have proven their ability to at least 10 of this Warlord Community), and when each weekly standings are posted, that we all look to the "Welcome new Warlords Newbie and Other Newbie!" And make an effort to further educate them in the traditions of this fine sport,
rather than condemning them as "punk kids with no respect for the rules."
I can't see how any new dueler would have any respect for any rules that are epitomized by a pack of stuffy "You can't play with us" elitists. The duels do not belong to senior citizens only, and everyone from Ulath to Darkness has the right to be more than a spectator.

The history of Earth, and even RhyDin, are filled with those who sought glory and respect --from Napoleon to Hitler, and, yes, even Ecore-- through the use of force, bearing arms against thier brothers. *That* kind of notoriety surely cannot be a thing you desire. I have always thought that respect was due a man by the way he lived his life, the way he conducted his relationships and the way in which he interacted with his peers. It may not
always bring fame, (the Lady Jonalyn, for example), however, the end result is far more satisfying, I am sure.
My point, I suppose, is this. Rather than stepping into the ring, guns blazing in all thier glory, it would behoove one to spend time interacting with those who inhabit them, building friendships and allowing the quiet man within to be known and evaluated on personal merits. To allow one's everday actions to testify to thier integrity, not that brief moment of glory within the ring. That is the basis for *true* respect, in my eyes at least.

I can only hope to be thought of as well as people like Jonalyn, Goldendust and Luthien... three duelists of widely differing skill... yet all held in the highest respect by the community as a whole.
