The night was quiet, the birds having finally turned in from their impossible task of attempting to wake the sun once more to light the skys of RhyDin, and the wind rustled almost gently through the trees, spring was returning to RhyDin and this night of all others, was prosaic and perfect.
Somewhere in the night sky, hundreds of thousands of years ago, a star died, an insignificant thing in the eyes of those able to comprehend it, had it have died where it was supposed to have died, but this star died out of course, amidst hundreds of its brother stars, its explosion taking them in an unexpected, fiery rush...until soon, an entire constellation had exploded in fire so great that the very fabric of reality was wrenched.
And finally, these hundreds of thousands of years later, its effects made themselves known to RhyDin.
Suddenly the quiet stillness of the RhyDin night was torn asunder by a thunderous cracking peal of the earth splitting, and an earthquake railed across the land like an unstoppable bully, sending weak buildings and structures to the dirt in tumbled heaps of stone and thatch, and in the midst of Silverlake, just north of RhyDin Town, a fey bubbling began, then a huge column of granite and corundum blasted up out of the lake, sending an
explosions of steam high into the night as the heat of the column blasted out from the lake.
Peasants ran to their windows and crossed themselves and made signs of protection, muttering amongst themselves about evil omens as they looked into the night sky and stared upon the huge blue flaming nova among the stars, its upper edge tinged with red and looking for all the world like face surmounted with a set of horns.
" Tis en evil sign it be Crannock, " a prostitute named Elowanda said in her rough voice, looking up to the nova then. pointing her prospective customer towards the huge granite column that had made its steaming self known just over the horizion. " Things shall be a comin down if'n I know annathin about this world. "
Crannock nodded disinterestedly and took her by the arm and back into the alley, placing several copper coins in her bodice without a word or care.
Out across the lake, the column had begun to cool, and on the southern side of it, a small area the size of a large door flashed a glowing crimson, and suddenly, where once there was not, an opening in the column stood, just a foot from the lakes waterline.
From the shores of the massive lake, a huge dark figure could be seen to emerge from the column, a cloak of black whipping about its shoulders in the now strong winds, and the light of the super nova in the sky shining down upon the lake and illuminating the roiling surface of the water. The figure stepped out from the embrasure, and set its feet to the water, and in a slow measured pace, made its way to shore, electricity shooting through
the tops of the waves with every strike of his foot in long blue cruel arcs.
Two lovers that had snuck out of the nearby village and met at the lake, had witnessed the entire arrival, the man being of cowardly heart, had fled as the figure made its approach, leaving his young lover standing transfixed, as the figure made its way to shore, her bodice half open and her dress disheveled.
He was impossibly beautiful, his perfect lines and curves emanating a fey power as he neared her, her entire being shuddered at the smile on his face, and the powerful grace of his strides, and without a word, he quickly took her, leaving her several minutes later, naked, shaking and writhing in an ecstasy that would last for days.
The figure turned from the lakeside, leaving his conquest in blissful pleasure, knowing that if she was not found she would die of exposure before the powerful ecstasy wore off, with a dark grin he headed towards the lights and sounds of RhyDin town.
The birds had woken, their sleep startled by the noise, and even more by the arrival, and those that could hear and understand, their calls cried a name.
<Lucifer....Lucifer....Lucifer!!!!!> The birds creened into the night air as the new sun began to make its way across the horizion.
Peasants that had been about their early morning tasks fled into their homes upon seeing the unknown figure coming from the area of the lake, being superstitous they knew anything coming from the lake after all the incidents of the past night would be evil and ill luck to cross.
Lucifer merely smiled to himself and headed towards the gates of the town, casting them open with a wave of his hand to the complete consternation of the Captain of the Watch, and walking into the city unnopposed as the gate guards suddenly found more interesting things to do in the gate house.
As he stepped down the rough cobbled streets, he drew a rolled cigarette from his cloak and lit it with a dark, joyus smile.
Lucifer had always liked humans.
