The cold steel of the ships railing seeped through Adrian's firm grip like a penetrating fog, unnoticed and unheeded. His icy blue gaze still fixed upon the grey green waves that pummeled the ship's side, he took no notice of the commotion that accompanied the berthing of the great ship. Long after the last of the crew had disembarked, Adrain wrestled the emotions warring within, as surely as the brewing storm battled his desire to reach his
destination. Trust, loyalty, desire and longing raged within his mind insistently -- violently. A sudden, almost imperceptible presence invaded the battle, breaking his gaze from the horizon.

"Sarah, what do you here, on a night such as this?" Without turning, he addressed the intruder to his private war. The soft whisper of her lilting speech came across the wind as a whisper. "Ye needed me....."

Inhaling deeply, his chest rising and falling with the action, he turned to face her, leaning against the rail his hands had occupied. Catching sight of the torment within his eyes, the woman's feet flew across the deck, her hand reaching out to cradle his cheek, tenderly. Indulging himself in the moment, his face nestled into her hand, seeking solace and comfort. With this, Sarah stepped into his body, so closely that he could feel the steady rythym
of her heartbeat against his.

"Ah, Adrian, I knew tha' this distance couldnae be a lastin' thing....and somehow I just knew tha' ye needed me...." The musical notes of her voice soothed his ragged spirit, until the meaning of her words pierced his conciousness. Pulling away gently, he gazed into her eyes, his look softening to one of affection.

"We were over long ago, my pet. This evening's torment is a matter of loyalty, not of....love. " His heart lurched within his chest at the utterance of the words. "I'd not have you at a disadvantage. Our parting was quite clear."

Glancing up at him, her almond-shaped eyes glowed with unshed tears. "And yet, yer spirit called tae mine, just as surely as if they'd ne'er parted...." Seeing the resolve within his eyes, her voice trailed into a whisper. "I could .....comfort ye, Adrian, nothin' more."

A tender smile crossed his features. "I'd do no dishonor to your gentle heart, dearling." Sighing heavily, his words were measured. "I owe a debt, to one who is unaware of the owing, and I must pay it by handing him back his birthright....... If only this damnable storm would allow me passage!" The timbre of his voice rumbled like the thunder of the storm. Turning to the tumultous sea, he paused to examine the waves, turning back to find himself
alone, once again. Trudging down the gangplank, he made his way back to the arena to share the news of his thwarted departure, uncertain of the warmth of his reception.

Potion shivered as she stood gazing out of the round window, the tapping of a lone branch having drawn her there moments before. William had yet to return home, and she could still see his handsome face as it had appeared at dawn, drawn with the worry he had tried to keep hidden. She could hear the wind whistling around the eves of the cottage, and darkness had fallen much earlier than usual,
even for the winter months. Turning from the window, she made her way thoughtfully to the huge fireplace and added several thick logs, moving with great care to prevent doing herself or the babe harm.

As the flames licked hungrily at the fresh wood, her thoughts returned to the previous night in the arena, a night filled with revelations and surprises. She had listened carefully, heart lurching at the anguish that filled Will's voice as he talked quietly about potential losses. She had tried to convince him of her undying love, but she had seen how disturbed he was. She could only hope that Adrian would be successful in his mission....

Adrian. It was obvious how close he was to her husband. The determined look on his face last night had nearly frightened her, and the intensity in his blue eyes had flashed a fire that would not be ignored. William had a true friend in the man, and there was no doubt that he would soon learn the truth. If he survived the storm....

A smile softened her delicate features as she whispered several words. "Lady Mouse indeed. Godspeed Adrian, and know that you are in our thoughts." Refusing to take Will's words with any seriousness, she turned from the fire and headed to the stable to check on Mystic, wrapping the heavy cloak tightly around her growing figure...

The foam dripped from the huge stallion's mouth as William rode towards the small seaport. His heart lurched within him as he fought familiar demons. The battle between his loyalties had become so familiar that he could almost call the next strategy. Thank the Saints that Potion was content to wait for his explaination. Time was so precious... in so many areas of his life...

The smell of brine and rotting fish struck his face like a gauntlet, a cold and biting contrast to the earthy scent of the meadows and forests behind them. With a renewed burst of energy, Donas lunged down the hard-packed road towards the vague outline of the docks hemmed by sinueous lengths of fog.

The mast and quartermast of the tiny vessel were swallowed up by the thick soup, as it bobbed beside the rickety pier. William leaned into the stirrups, rising to gain a better view of the poop deck as he searched for any sign of Adrian. Muffled voices seemed to float about him unattended, their ghostly masters veiled from view. He remained frozen, his senses focusing on a singular sound that might be recognizable in the blanketing mist.

The moisture condensing on his hair and beard trickled, unheeded, down his neck and shoulders. All about him were the sounds of water; the choppy lapping against the hull of the ship competed for the various drips falling from every possible surface. Donas shook his drenched mane violently, mammoth sides slowing as the horse regained his breath from the hard ride. Quickly, William's attentions were drawn to his mount, and he lowered himself into
the saddle once more, turning towards the narrow street that flanked the cove.

"C'mo then, Donas lad ... a warm mash will help ye thaw," he murmered gently, as he lead them towards the far-off cliffs, knowing that The Tongue's Tryst would offer them some solace before the long ride home.....

The rain lashed down relentlessly, the dark angry sky pausing now and then to clap out it's displeasure with a brilliant flash, revealing the tortured countryside it mercilessly punished. Long tendrils of raven hair plastered against his chiseled jaw, Adrian followed the path to the Tongue's Tryst with deliberate determination. Casting his gaze to the top of the rainswept bluff, he could faintly see the welcoming light of the inne, itself.
Having stabled his horse in an over full barn, he was by no means surprised by the crowded condition of the main room of the inne. The odor of the unwashed masses assailed his senses as he pushed open the heavy oak door, and he silently longed for the scent of Sandalwood and Cinnamon. Evaluating the occupants, he nodded in approval. Commoners, gentlemen and sailors mingled at each table, in varying degrees of debauchery and vice. Shouldering his way
through the crowd, he made his way toward the bar. One glance at his huge frame and determined face convinced most of the revelers to clear a path, and soon he was face to face with the owner. A wickedly delightful light gleamed in his eye as he flashed a pearly grin, addressing her with a low bantering tone.

"No time for a mournful melody, Katherine? Or is it this the crowd for something more..... baudy?"

With each entrance and exit, she kept a mental roll of the probable nights' profits. The din of the raucous men merely added flavor to Kathryn's approach to innekeeping. With an artful dodge from a pinching hand, she sloshed a bit of her beer into the lap of the overzealous patron. She grinned at his astonished oath and continued on to wander about the large room, sharing in a little gossip here, offering a little extra nip from her private
flask to a friend or two there. She kept half a watchful eye on the buxom barmaid as the young girl tightened down the storm shutters against the brewing weather outside.

A loud thunderclap rumbled outside as the enormous doors were pushed open. The broad shouldered figure turned slightly to ease his frame into the fire-lit room, with only a few nosey glances noticing his arrival. But Kathryn noticed. The soaking breeches did little to hide the thick thighs from her appraising gaze, and she subtly looked him over, eyes traveling slowly up the broad chest and shoulders to the mop of dark, wet hair that was
plastered to his well-molded head.
With a slyness that contradicted her carefully created sweetness, she maneuvered her way through the throng, locking her Best Smile perfectly in place.

"Weel then, if it isna Adrian the Rogue Reiver hisself!" she laughed quietly, lifting her head back to gaze him squarely in the eye.

With a well intended movement, Adrian grabbed the bodacious tender in a crushing embrace. Grinning cheekily, he lifted her off the flooring and pecked her on the cheek before setting her back down.

"Yes, Kate. And the handsomest Reiver to have ever graced this poor excuse of a pub, I'd wager!"

Her eyes flashed as she determined to shield her delight. "Ye'd so quickly wager? So ye've come to lose a bit more at strip spar, is it?"

"As I remember it, that sport leaves everyone a winner. You really shouldn't wear corsets. You've quite a figure on you," he grinned back at her

The answering roars of laughter told her that their conversation had gathered a bit more interest than she had intended, and she drew her brows together in an attempt to scold him.

"Bloody 'ell, man. Ye didna need ta say that in front of all the laddies, did ye?" she murmered with a reproachful glare at a grinning customer. She turned on her heels and motioned for him to follow her with a sharp jerk of her head, leaving Adrian to laugh aloud along with the rest of the men.

The bawdy insults and comments fell on deaf ears as she stepped inside the small side room that served as her office. Moving aside for Adrian to enter, she motioned for Sarah to take over the tavern and closed the oak door solidly behind them.

A heavily bound ledger was still laying open on her table and she closed it before turning to face the imposing man.

"Shall I get out my cards then, Adrian, or was it something else that brought ye to the Tryst this night?"

As she spoke, Kate pulled a bottle from a desk drawer, pouring a drought of brackish liquid into a pair of glasses, waving him into a seat. Swirling the liquid about his glass, he threw a glance at Kate as he tossed the brew quickly down his throat. Her eyes danced as she watched, knowing the drink's initial potential for discomfort. His throat constricted on contact, the vileness making him shudder, a wildly burning sensation nearly causing him to
spew it out. Fighting his body's natural defenses, he forced the gulp down, his face burning with the effort. Her challenging look made him resist the urge to cough and he concentrated, instead, on the rush of warmth it provided as it coursed, almost immediately, through his chilled body. It was a long moment before he could meet her eyes and recovered his voice.

"Still serving the Wookie swill, eh, Kate? I'd have thought they'd shut you down long ago. Who provides you with such contraband?" His tone still bantering, there was a serious light to his eye as he asked the question.

Her merry eyes dancing with the show, she answered him equally as casually.

"I dinnae always lose at the sparring, Adrain. Not when it suits me to win......." A sudden quirk of her lovely lips belied the half-truth.

Adrian leaned back in his chair, his exhaustion suddenly showing as the drink worked it's magic on his tense muscles. His eyes narrowing speculatively, he wondered, then, whether she would give him her full trust with a secret he already knew. Stroking his bearded chin thoughtfully, he studied her. With a sigh, he drew a long breath and began to speak in low measured tones.

"I've a bit of a problem, Kate, and I'm afraid I need your assistance. It is of an urgent nature that I leave RhyDin, and this demon of a storm prevents me from risking the lives of my men in the attempt." Pouring another draught of the vile liquid, he tossed down the swill with far more comfort this time, and continued, glancing at her sidewise. "You're in a unique position to help with this, as I know smuggler's take advantage of storms like this
to cover thier activities. I'm fair certain you can negotiate a berth, and your fee, I'm sure, will be reasonable." With his last words, the bantering look reappeared. Artfully dilating his already irresistable eyes, a tecnique he'd learned early on in his dealings with women, he leveled all his charms upon this woman who could be instrumental in his cause.

"What say you, Kate?"

Kathryn leaned forward, careful to dip her bodice low enough to reveal more than was necessary. His gaze had nearly disarmed her, and she didn't like that. With renewed dtermination, she wet her lips seductively and purred in a low, sultry voice.

"Ye canae blame the lads for no' willin' tae risk their mangey hides, now can ye?"she asked, pouring herself a deeper shot than he had poured himself. Reaching for his emptied glass, she purposefully brushed her fingers across his as she pulled the glass back towards her. "The wind tonight is nearly makin' me shiver", she added with a doeful glance towards the window, deliberately avoiding the hidden agenda that was now out in the open.

Adrian's deep, throaty chuckle forced a slight frown to her auburn brows.

"Good god, Kate .. the virginal novice doesn't fit you. Nor should it, I would hope," he added, leaning closer. Ever mindful of the cat and mouse they played, he reached for her hand and turned it over, slowly drawing one finger across her palm while watching her with glittering eyes.

With a slow drawn breath, she met his gaze with one of her own.

"Virginal? Novice?", she laughed lightly. "Come now, Adrian ... 'though you've never tasted my wares, surely you can tell the difference between a pigherder and a professional". With a slight shift, the tiny fleur-de-lei brand caught his eye from beneath the edge of her chamise. Slipping her hand from his caress, she refilled his glass before lifting her own.

" A toast, then. To knowing what it is tha' ye want and havin' the stones to take it", she said, tilting the contents quickly down her throat.

With those words, the mask of joviality slipped, and a fleeting glimpse of the pain in his heart was evident on his face. Unable to recover immediately, Adrian turned to the window, looking out at the storm.

"and havin' the stones to take it.................."

The words echoed in his ears, threatening to steal his composure. Balling his hand into a fist, he shook his head and muttered under his breath.

"What I want isn't for the taking...." Regaining his control, he turned to face the beautiful vixen. "Kate, will you, or will you not, help me? Tis of the utmost importance, and I shall pay anything you deem fit, should your ship sail tonight." Bringing his knowledge of her activities into the open, he played his last card.

With the art of a diplomat, Kathryn smoothly ignored his previous discomfort as though it were but a short pause in friendly conversation. Closing the short distance between them, she pulled the storm shutters to, and fastened them securely.

"Should the storm persist, Adrian, we'll be sailin' in two hours time. The ship is bein' loaded as we speak." Turning towards him, she placed a delicate palm upon his broad chest and slid it sinuously up about his neck. Eyeing him teasingly, she added, "The price will be of me own choosin'.....and in me own timin', lad."

Grinning suddenly in relief, Adrian kissed her soundly on the cheek, crushing her in a warm embrace in the process. A sudden commotion in the common room caught their attention, and they broke apart, laughing, the tension completely eased. As they started toward the noise outside, Adrian mentally offered his thanks for the tact of the beautiful tender.

Potion left the Annex after a heated argument with E, cheeks flushing a rosy pink. He had offered to see her home, in fact to put her to bed, and her refusal had stung the young man into a quiet anger. She knew that E meant well, but she also understood how William felt about other men in his home when he was away. Her explanation had only served to further annoy E, and try as she might, she
had not been able to calm him down. Her promise to Will meant everything to her, even to the point of losing a good friend...

Once outside, the cold night air quickly cooled her temper. A quiet whistle to Mystic brought the mare to her side, and she mounted easily, careful as always to guard both babies. Without thinking, she turned Mystic's head toward her old cottage, a sudden yearning overcoming her usual common sense. Will would not be returning this night, and she would be up and gone by morning's light, home before he even had a chance to miss her...

The ride seemed to last only moments, and the sight of the cottage warmed her heart. Mystic nickered softly, as though in recognition, sidestepping delicately with a gentle toss of her head. After slipping the bridle from the horse's tender mouth, she patted her gently on the rump and shooed her into the meadow, certain that she would stay close by, as she had always done...

The door to the cottage creaked as she tugged it open, the familiar scent of dried herbs and flowers a welcome one. Everything was as if she had left only that morning, and she remembered that Will had someone coming to care for the place in her absense. She knelt to quickly light the ready laid stack of wood, pleased when it caught immediately. Hands on hips, she turned in a full circle, taking in all the well loved nooks and crannies. Her lips
curved in a slow smile, lighting up her delicate features and erasing the memory of her arguement with E. So many memories here, so much love felt in this small cottage, and as always, she could almost feel William with her. Unwilling to abandon the fire, she climbed the ladder to the loft to fetch a quilt, laughing quietly at how difficult a task this proved to be. After tossing her grandmother's beloved patchwork quilt to the floor below, she
descended one step at a time, softly counting the rungs as she had done as a small child. Shaking her head at her silliness, she wrapped herself in the quilt, savoring its worn softness as she scooted close to the warm fire, curling up on the thick rug that remained there. Cradling her unborn child with gentle hands, she drifted into an uneasy sleep, all she could ever manage without Will by her side...

Potion stretched carefully, limbs and back aching from the unaccustomed hardness of the floor. The fire was nothing more than softly glowing embers and the room had cooled considerably. It had been many months since she has last fallen asleep in this spot, and William had been by her side then. She could almost feel his arms cradling her, his softly whispered words soothing her back to sleep.
How she missed the sound of his heart beating beneath her cheek, the familiar scent of his warm body comforting her during the long winter nights...

Using her old walking stick, she stood slowly, one hand rubbing gently at the small of her back. The baby gave a protesting kick, as if annoyed that she had awakened him so rudely. "Be still little one, I will only be a moment", smiling as she spoke aloud to the unborn child. Turning to the small, stacked pile of wood, she chose several logs, taking them one at a time to the hearth. Adding them gently to the dying fire, she worked slowly to rebuild
it, tiny flames licking hungrily at the dry fuel...

With a satisfied sigh, she knelt on the rug, the warmth lending a rosy glow to her already radiant skin. Her thoughts, as always, were with her husband and her heart ached sharply with her missing of him. Even being at the cottage did not seem to ease her, as she had hoped it would. It had been home for so long, but now the emptiness was far more pronounced. Refusing to give in to the tears that threatened, she tugged her grandmother's quilt
tightly around her shoulders. Lifting her chin, she began singing softly to the babe, her voice low and sweet. Body swaying in time with the tender words, she rocked slowly to and fro, calming the infant and herself with the beloved words...

The attack had been swift and brutal, the cloaked figures clearly men for hire. William's broadsword had been snapped in two over the metal-clad head of one of the henchmen, before an answering blow had speared Donas' breast. The noble beast had lunged forward, throwing William directly into the band of men, where he was outnumbered four to one. Without a blade, he was left to ward off their attack with only his dirk and fist which left him an
easy target for the well-armed reivers.

They didn't speak to him as they pummelled him, but merely seemed to take exquisite detail in their thrashing him. He fought with rage, unwilling to go down alone. Another groan answered his thrust as one of the hoodlams fell aside, grabbing at his side. A blinding crash caught the side of his temple as the strong taste of metalic liquid filled his mouth. He felt himself falling, strangely, slowly, to the frozen earth, while the various fists and
feet continued their battering. Just before he drifted into the blissfulness of darkness, he thought he could hear a familar voice, but couldn't remember now what had been said...

The biting night air sent currents of pain through the lone figure as his battered form stumbled through the shrouded woods. The soft crunching of snow beneath his boots was joined only by the sound of the horse's lagging steps beside him, its lame gait obvious even from a distance. William fought through the fatigue, not only for his own wellfare but for that of Donas'. With the threatening clouds overhead, he knew it was merely hours before the
next storm decended upon them and the thought of another night without shelter chilled him even more.
The road had long dissapeared from identification, and the beaten man strained to follow familiar shapes and altered formations of groves, only half sure that they were still headed towards Potion's old cottage. The thought of another night apart from her made his heart ache, but he trudged on, knowing that if she saw him in his current condition it would only frighten her anyway. Perhaps a rest and wash would prove to be more benefitial for both
of them. He winced as he stumbled over a snow-hidden obsticle, the unknown injuries tearing away at his stamina.

Silently, he continued his prayers for her safety, the one thing that had kept him going for the the days that he had wandered the snowswept moors. He reached into his mind, grasping at the memories of her scent... her smile ... the shape of her swollen body... their babe growing within, stretching her ...
any detail that he could conjure kept his feet trudging forward, mechanically.

Oh, Potion... please, love.. be safe and well... I am coming... I am coming...

The threatened snow began falling lightly at first. If William hadn't already been so bone-chilled, he might have enjoyed it. The snow always brought a special peace with it, a softness and stillness that offered something special to him. But not this night. Donas shook his mane free of the stuff, and halted as the action caused pain to fill his broad chest, the deep wound's blood finely stanched with William's last herbs and strips from his
tunic. The dismal pair continued to stumble through the night, mindlessly plodding towards the cottage.

As they stepped over the now-frozen stream, William's memories began to flood him once again. They passed the tree that he had found Potion in, and the thought of her up there, legs dangling coquettishly, brought a stiff smile to his swollen lip. With a great deal of effort for both of them, they crested the small hill that looked over the meadow of her cottage. With a vacant stare, William looked down into the sleepy valley and blinked slowly.
With a painful sigh he refocused his eyes and realized that there was a small stream of smoke coming from the empty cottage.

A small surge of anger came up from deep within his belly, as he started down the sloping hillside. He was in no condition to defend the cottage from anyone, and he certainly couldn't turn out some hapless person on a night like this. With growing dread, they carefully picked their way down the snow-covered path and trudged towards the stable, Donas now increasing his gait somewhat as he recognized his old home....

Assuming her most imposing air, Kathryn swept the small office door open widely, tucking away the knowledge that Adrian's and her conversation was far from over. The roaring of a pending brawl grabbed her attention as she stepped into the main tavern room, eyes quickly locating the source of the commotion. Parting through the sea of men like a Viking dragonship, she aimed straight for the table that was off to the side of the room. The strangers'
faces were mottled, their voices raised in heated profanity. There were only three, and one of them a woman. But the roucus was remarkable. They began to rise, one by one, and their intent to one another seemed dubious at best. Just as the smaller of the men shoved a chair away, the steely eyes of the tenderess fell on the tallest, and loudest, of the group.

"If ye b' thinkin' o' breakin' any o' MY tables, laddie, ye had best think agin!" Her voice rang out clear and strong as she stopped before them, her face set solidly in an icy mask as he looked down to her, befuddled at the woman's audacity.

A smile uncurled with an oily ease as his face changed from that of a drunken rage to pure laciviousness as he moved slightly toward her.

"Come, come there, little one. You really don't want to be aggravating us more tonight. Why don't you run along and fetch another bucket of that fine ale you provided earlier?" he leered, openly admiring the expanse of creamy bosom that her bodice so immodestly revealed. As he spoke, he reached a large, filthy hand out to grab at her neck, expecting to pull her close.

With an almost imperceptible movement, Kathryn withdrew a small, glittering dagger from between the tempting mounds and thrust it into his codpiece in one fluid motion.

"It appears that you have mistaken me fer a common bar wench. Pity that", she hissed through gritted teeth. His eyes widen in horror as she pressed harder, piercing the hard outer shell of the trousers and nicking the delicate skin beneath. Beads of sweat appeared over his thick lips as he stammered out something that was supposed to pass for an apology.

"So it has, so it has. Begging your pardon, miss", he stammered, the color draining from his face as Kathryn narrowed her eyes.

"You are in my tavern, Sirrah. Dinae ever forget that, aye?" she warned, giving a small jab deeper, stepping closer as she stared the smelly brute down.

He nodded mutely, his comrade's silent at his side.

"Perhaps ye might redeem yerself by buyin' a round for the lads, here", she continued, briefly nodding her head in the direction of the quieted patrons who's own conversations had stilled for the entertainment the newcomers had provided.

"Of course, of course", he agreed. "On me", he added quickly.

A small murmur of approval reverberated through the room and Kathryn dazzlingly smiled up to him, withdrawing the threatening steel from his garment as she did. Without looking away, she called out to the young beauty behind the counter.

"Sarah, stouts for the lads. And be sure to collect the silver first". A roar of laughter from the regulars calmed her trembling gut as she turned and strode to the bar, desperately in need of something a bit stronger than brew.

Knowing full well that Kathryn was more than a match for the situation, Adrian leaned casually aginst the doorframe, his brow quirked with amusement at her look of consternation. As the ruffians banter continued in a more acceptable vein, his attention was suddenly drawn to the hushed tones of two men seated at a table just outside of his line of vision.

"Hadnoe ye better settle yer band down, a bit, man? We'd noe be likin' tae draw attention to oorselves, noe would we?"

" I think the lovely tender has things well in ..... hand. I'm far more concerned about the balance of the purse. You brought it with you?"

“Hae yew brought Fraser’s claymore, as proof?”

“His claymore was not on him,” came the gruff reply. At the mention of Will’s name, Adrian shrank silently back into the doorframe concentrating on the words.

“Yew expect me to believe tha’ yew took the bastard Laird down, wi’out any proof o’ his death? He’d noe let his father’s claymore out of his sight, tha’ much I know aboot him. I’ll pay you noe a single cent more wi’out th’ proof. I’d wager yew didnoe even run inta him!”

With a short bark of laughter, the second man’s rasping voice clipped out a reply. “I thought you thieving Scots would try that one on me, which is why I brought you this.” The ring of spinning metal could be heard, accompanied by a sharply indrawn breath. A moment, that seemed to Adrian an eternity, passed before the pair spoke again.

“Yew’ll get yer pay, an’ well earned it is!”

Adrian, unable to still himself any longer, reached back into Kathryn’s office, availing himself of a half filled glass. Lurching with the exagerated gait of a man well into his cups, he rounded the corner of the doorframe, stumbling into the chair of the first speaker.

“Wha’ the bloody ‘ell, man!” the fellow expostulated, as Adrian allowed the contents of the drink to slosh down the fellows pantsleg. Casting a covert glance to the table, Adrian’s face grew ashen. Teetering, he mumbled a slurred apology and continued across the room to a vacant table. He himself into the chair, his head sinking into his hands. His face hidden from view, his anguish was unapparent to the room at large. His eyes squeezed tightly shut,
still he couldn’t block the picture of the polished table top from his minds eye. There, lying in the center, a broach. The distinctive crest upon it could have come from no other personage save the Scottish Laird, William Fraser. And that he would not be separated from it lightly was no secret.

Drawing a ragged breath, Adrian steeled his feaures before easing his face from his hands. With a furtive glance in Kathryn’s direction, he nodded curtly toward the kitchen. At her understanding look, he rose and stumbled his way through it’s doors.

She sank heavily against the thick wood of the door of the kitchen, cheeks paling slightly with his news as the soft click of the latch caught in the door frame.

"How could tha' be?" She murmered, stunned. "He had noe enemies here ... I would ha'e heard o' it, surely".

Adrian's features had hardened into a steely countenance that Kathryn had never seen on him before. It both reassured her and caused her a dull, nagging taste of danger.
