Kyle was content for the first time in years. He had found his one, true love and was newly promoted within his Guild and Family. Nothing could ruin his mood, not even Daryth, his troubling Brother. The only troubling thing in his life was the little girl who showed up on his doorstep and told Jon that Khrys was taken.

His first thoughts were to go and find the ruffians who have taken Khrys, but he needed more information. He did not want to go off on a Rescue mission without knowing where he was going. He contacted Daemon, only to find that he had already left searching for Khrys. Deciding he would only slow the man down, Kyle prepared to search here in Rhydin, and began securing th area from further attacks. He dispatched his Personal Guard, led by Kierin,
his most promising squire, to find and help Daemon... or to avenge him if need be.

He gathered his things into his pack and prepared to go to the Gym to work out. He always went there this time of day, and he hoped to see Topaz there. He told Jon, the Captain of his guard, that he would be back later and to see to the defense of the keep. He walked to the front door and opened it.

Kyle stopped dead in his tracks. There, tied to the door latch, was a puppy. The same puppy he had given to Shar. His heart stopped. He couldn't help but think that something had happened to Shar. He looked around for signs of a struggle and yelled for Jon.

Seeing no signs of a struggle, he bent down and inspected the puppy. There was a note under the puppy's collar.

Jon and about 5 other guards came running up, swords and crossbows in hand. "What is it, Sire?" Jon asked. He surveyed the scene and, seeing Kyle's face, dispersed the Guards into the woods.

Reading the note, Kyle looked at Jon through Blood tinged eyes. "It's...nothing, Jon. Send the men back to their posts."

"But, milord, you..."

"Just Do It... Jon, Now. Go back inside, I will be back soon."

Jon called the men back to their posts and went back inside, watching Kyle from a distance. Kyle picked up the puppy, crumpled the note and walked off from his keep, his bag forgotten on his doorstep.

Walking to the place where he first saw his True love, Kyle stops and buys paper and a quill with ink. He writes a letter to Shea, his true love's sister.

Walking to the Burnt Offerings, he finds it closed and decides to just leave the puppy and go, not wanting to cause anymore problems. He walks to the window and smashes it in. He lowers the puppy down into the bar and looks for a carpenter to board up the window. Having done this, he walks back to the Gym.

Arriving at the Gym, Kyle is relieved to find no one there. He walks to the DoF arena and begins hitting the heavy bag with all his might. The bag flies across the room, having been pulverized and ripped from it's hook. Kyle, not feeling any better, decided he needs something else to hit. Holding the crumpled piece of paper in his left hand, he walked over to the wall and punched it. His hand goes into the wall and leaves an imprint, so
mightywas the blow. He drops the crumpled piece of paper amidst the blood tears on the floor and walked out, planning to leave Rhydin soon.

Walking back to his Keep, Kyle orders Jon to close the Keep and not allow anyone in. He walks to the Library and sits in his Chair, staring at the fire for nearly 12 hours without moving.

Love hath but scorn, not care for me.

For my lonely heart, it does not weep.

Why is it that I cannot see

the coming of darkness...still and deep.

The void engulfs my very soul,

devours the light and douses the flame,

brings unto me a numbing cold

and leaves with romance and joy unclaimed.

Once more alone, I suffer still

from passion's longing, no mercy found.

I must again search on until

I find the place where love's voice sounds

Topaz and Gnim, having found the destruction at the Arena and knowing only one man could do such things, arrive at the keep later that same day. Topaz tells Jon that she wishes to see Kyle and Jon readily allows them into the Keep, hoping they can help Kyle.

He leads them to the Library and walks inside to announce the two. He tells Kyle he has visitors. Kyle staands and looks at Jon. "I told you I do not wish to be disturbed."

Jon simply states, "Topaz Eludes, the Head Commander of the Guardians of Truth and a Gnome named Gnimish are here to see you, Sir. I did not think you would wish to insult your leader by telling her to go away."

Picking up a small bookshelf and hurling it at the door, Kyle yells, "You're right! You didn't think! Now send them away!"

Dodging the bookcase with some difficulty, Jon throws himself on the floor and looks up at his master through angry eyes. "No, I will not, Sir. If you wish to send them away, you will have to do it yourself." Standing, he lowers his voice dangerously. "I will not allow you to be a coward today."

Kyle walks back to his chair. "Very well, as you will not do your duty to me, send them in." He turns back to the fire and stares at it without seeing it.

Meanwhile, Gnim says to Topaz, "What are we gonna do when we get in, anyway?"

"I don't know, try a surreal compliment?"" The bookshelf strikes the door. Or not. That didn't sound promising." Topaz says.

A few moments later, the door opens and a somewhat dissheveled Jon walks out. "Sir Kyle will see you now."" He steps aside and holds the door for Topaz and Gnim. The two walked in, sidestepping the demolished bookshelf.

"Yes?" comes Kyle's voice from the chair in front of the fire.

Topaz walked over to stand in front of Kyle. "No 'yes.' Good eve." She waits a moment then continues with a smile. "Good eve to you, as well, Kyle."

"What can I do for you, Topaz?" Kyle asks without looking from the fire.

""Thank you," Topaz continues, undaunted. "I'd love to sit and stay a while, so kind of you to offer. You remember Gnim, don't you?"

Sighing heavily, Kyle says, "Yes. Forgive me, but I am not in the mood for company."

Looking at the door and the demolished bookshelf, Topaz says, "So I... umm heard. And saw." Thinking of the destruction at the Atrebla Arena.

"I will, of course, pay for the damages to the Arena." Kyle says without emotion.

"Have you ordered a new punching bag?" Topaz asks.

"No. Just send me the bill for all repairs and I will pay them."

Topaz nods. "You really need to do something about that. That's twice in as many weeks."

"I'm sorry. I've had a really bad day." Kyle retorts crossly.

"Why would Shar send me a letter by courier asking me to check on you and make sure you are safe?"

Looking at her for the first time since she entered the room, Kyle says, voice icy, "I don't know. She sent mine by puppy."

"Gonna tell me what this is all about?" Topaz asks. "I trust Daryth's name will not come up."

"No... not that I know of..." Kyle says. I trust, that since you are here, you found Shar's note."

"The one you apparently dropped in the arena after trying to put your fist through the wall? Yes. Want it back?"

"No... Then you know why I am here. Now, why are you two here?" Kyle asks, looking up at Gnim for the first time. Gnim nods at him.

"Okay... Well Shar wrote another note..."

"Not to me..." Kyle whispers, almost to himself.

"No... to me," Topaz says. "That, combined with the mess... well, we just had to stop by."

Kyle turns his gaze back to the fire. "Since you are her, I have a request..."

"Shoot..." Topaz says with a smile.

"I would like my Sword and Armour back..."

"Why?"

"I... have something to do..."

"What might that be?"

"I must prove... my worth."

"Explain, please." Topaz says.

"Must I?" Kyle asks, almost pleadingly.

"Yes, twould appear so..." Topaz says, her expression becoming serious.

Standing suddenly, Kyle walks to the fireplace, standing in front of it with his back to his guests. "I must prove myself worthy of her... If you will not give me my weapons, I will have to go without them."

"Who must you prove yourself to?" Topaz asks seriously.

"Whom do you think?" Kyle replies angrily, spinning on her.

Undaunted, Topaz looks at him calmly. "I have no idea."

Regaining his composure, Kyle turns back to the fire. "Sharyne Teal'c" he whispers softly. "My true love."

"Now why would you want to that?" Topaz asks Kyle. Then, to Gnim, "Feel free to jump in any time." Gnim just shakes his head, listening to make sure he understands it all.

Sarcasm dripping from his words, Kyle replies, "Oh, I don't know. Maybe because I love her?" He turns and walks to a bookshelf. Reaching up, he pulls down a book, flipping the worn pages with practiced ease. Finding the passage he's looking for, he begins to read silently. "Will you do as I ask? WIll you give me my sword and armour?" he asks, his back to them.

"Do you remember your promise?" Topaz asks seriously.

Sighing heavily, Kyle looks up and asks, "Which one? I have made many."

"You swore that you would never again raise that sword in anger. You look awfully angry to me."

Kyle's answer is barely a whisper. "Not angry... just forever alone..." Gnim looks up at that, remembering when he felt that way, not so long ago. Kyle turns and looks at his guests, a single crimson tear streak under his right eye. Looking at Topaz pleadingly, he asks once more, "Will you do as I ask?"

Standing, Topaz walks over and hugs Kyle, who stands perfectly still, dropping the book. "If you still feel the same in a week's time, yes. But I ask that you allow Khrys to accompany you, as a bodyguard." She pulls a kerchief from one of her pockets and holds it out to Kyle, who ignores it.

Shoulders dropping, Kyle says, "I wish to leave immediately. I will be gone before the sun rises."

"Umm..." Gnim begins. "A question, if I may?" Kyle turns and nods at him while Topaz walks back to her seat. "What, exactly do you plan to do to 'prove' yerself to 'er? Just wondering..."

"Good one.." Topaz says, smiling.

Kyle stares at him for a moment. Then, "I have not decided. I just cannot bear to be here... alone."

"So, in other words, yer looking to either win 'er back, or get yerself kilt, is dat it?" Gnim asks, knowing that sounded harsh. Kyle just stands there, looking at him.

Topaz, grinning, mutters to herself, "Sure, it takes a man to understand a man.. I should have known that."

Kyle walks to the fire once more, his book laying forgotten on the floor. He glances over his shoulder as the door opens quietly and groans. "Great," he mutters to himself. "This I don't need." Daryth K'nar, Kyle's elven brother, walks into the library, smiling. He inclines his head to Topaz and nods to Kyle. Kyle turns back to the fire. "Will you do as I have asked, Topaz?"

"I have given you my answer," she replies. "As you have no plan as yet, I see no reason to change it."

"Fine," Kyle says tightly. "I will go without them."

"And if you want my honest opinion," Topaz continues, "I give it too. No matter what you do, she will not change her mind on this."

Kyle stares into the fire, standing perfectly still. "Are you finished?"

"For now."

Kyle motions over his shoulder and the door opens. "Jon will show you ALL out..."

"Hey!" Daryth says suddenly. "Did you and Shar break up?"

"Damn," Gnim says quietly, "I thought I was harsh about it."

Kyle spins suddenly, stepping toward Daryth dangerously. Topaz stands and Gnim lays his hand on his sword.

Kyle regains control, shaking violently. "Perhaps you should all go..." he says through clenched teeth.

Shrugging, Topaz and Gnim move for the door. Daryth leans lazily against the wall.

Jon walks in and holds the door for the two. He walks them to the front gate and thanks them for coming.

"Thank you, Jon. Let me know when he leaves, would you please?" Topaz says.

"Of course, m'Lady. I will be going with him. Whether he wishes it or not." Jon bows and walks back inside.

Meanwhile, Kyle looks back to the fire, having regained control of himself completely. "Don't you need to go tend your forest or something? It is rather large."

"No," Daryth replies. "It will grow whether I wish it to or not."

"I suppose you have come to gloat, Brother?" Kyle says, never looking at Daryth.

"Gloat?" Daryth replies, somewhat puzzled.

"Yes. Gloat. You know, tell me you told me so, say you knew thids would happen, tell me I fell to hard too fast. Gloat." Kyle says somewhat angrily.

"No. I did not come to gloat. I came because I was worried about you." Daryth states, leaning against the wall and pulling his daggers, one Ivory and the other Obsidian. "So, would you like to do the honors or do you want me to?"

Turning back to hte fire, Kyle asks, annoyed, "What are you talking about?"

"Well, you are in what is classically known as a suicidal mood. I just wanted to know if you wanted to kill yourself or if you want me to help."

Hanging his head, Kyle says, "So, instead of gloating you came to insult me. Get out."

Daryth just stands there, juggling his knives, pulling 3 more to add to the 2. "This mood of yours is very unbecoming." He throws them at the wall 5 feet from Kyle's head, forming a perfect star. "I did it! Umm... sorry it had to be your wall, though."

"Doesn't matter," glancing at the daggers. "I won't be here much longer anyway. I am taking a trip. I do not know how long I will be gone, so feel free to move in here." Glancing over his shoulder, Kyle says, "I'm sorry I am bringing you down. I've just had my heart ripped out... again..." the last a whisper.

"It's called the trials of Love, Kyle. Besides, you haven't known her that long."

"Great," Kyle mutters. "Here comes the gloating. You forget yourself, Little Brother, I never asked for your company or your counsel." He turns his back to Daryth, signifying the conversation is at an end.

"You're right, Kyle. But, then, I never asked for your so many years ago, did I? I guess I just owe it to you."

Kyle just stares at the fire.

"Do you run from all the fights you lose, Brother?" Daryth asks, switching tactics.

Finally, Kyle says, "No... and I am not runniong from this one either."

"Do you run from all the people who beat you?"

Kyle spins, eyes flashing dangerously. "I was NOT beaten, Brother. I was rejected." Then he whispers, "Something you would know nothing of."

"Ahh... yes. But still you run." Finally catches the last and shakes his head. "I wouldn't?"

Ignoring the question, Kyle says, "Yes. I run. There, are you happy now?"

"Run Kyle. Run away, far away. It won't solve anything. It merely removes the problem temporarily so you can deal with it when you come back." He walks toward the door.

"IF I come back," Kyle whispers softly.

"Remember your vows, Kyle," Daryth calls from the door. "Remember your vows."

"I have never forgotten them..." Kyle whispers softly.

Over the sun, a pall is cast;

Dark clouds are all that I can see.

I'd hoped the love would ever last...

Such dreams are not for men like me.

She left to seek another path

With one whose love she truly sought.

Now all I feel is Eros' wrath...

The pain and heartache he hath wrought.

I watched her as she slipped away

And took with her my happiness.

Without her love to light my day...

I'm left with nought but loneliness.

She left without a parting kiss.

I could not look into her eyes;

For there I'd see the soul I'd miss...

And she would see my tears arise.

It's strength renewed, once more I feel

Cold solitude embrace my heart.

Her feelings, that I thought were real...

Have left my being torn apart.

As the two men walked away from the Keep, the knight looked back, wondering if he would ever see this place again. He pulled his pack up on his shoulders and adjusted the strangely uncomfortable weight of the sword at his waist. He was surprised at that: after only a few weeks of not using a sword, the comfort of one around his waist was long in returning. For so many years,
he had depended on his strong arm and

his Broad Sword, Vengeance Giver, to protect the Right and keep the peace. Now, he was depending on his wits more. The Knight chuckled, thinking of what his brother would say to that... "Oh, brother, are we in trouble now!"

Kyle looked over his shoulder and saw his most loyal servant and his only true friend in his lonely life, Jon Brightblaid. The man had insisted on accompanying him. Kyle had actually Ordered him to stay and the man had refused. Secretly, Kyle was happy, but he scowled at the man every time Jon looked at him.

Kyle felt naked without his usual Plate armour. Topaz had refused to allow him to have it back. She said she was afraid he would go off and do something stupid. Well, not giving it to him had only sealed his fate. He had been resolved to his quest. The incident with Sharayne had merely moved up his timeframe. He still could not understand why his True Love had turned him away, but he had accepted it during the night. He just hoped she wouldbe
happy, as his happiness no longer mattered.

As they walked, Jon tried striking up a conversation, but Kyle merely ignored him. Jon finally gave up and began singing an ancient Solamnic song. He did not realize that his companion was the hero in this song. Kyle hurried ahead, so his companion would not see how moved he was by the song. The song told of a squire who was mortally wounded avenging the death of his Knight...

They walked for hours, approaching the portal which would take them Home. As they approached the portal, Kyle's pace slowed, almost like he was afraid to enter. Jon approached the portal and leaped through. Kyle, not wanting his servant to face Solamnia alone, jumped through as well.

As they walked out of the portal, Kyle was shocked at what he saw. The once beautiful plains of Solamnia were blackened and torn up from years of war and strife. Kyle looked to the mountains, hoping to see the majestic beauty he loved as a child. He saw only devastation and a land torn by war.

As he looked about him, he stopped suddenly, drawing his sword and ordering his companion to stand behind him. Jon spun then, and saw the largest Black Dragon he had ever laid eyes upon. He froze, caught by the Dragonfear. Kyle, his sense of duty overwhelming his fear of death, threw Jon to the ground and prepared to meet the dragon with the pitiful sword he had borrowed from the armory. He wished suddenly that he had insisted upon getting his
sword and armour back. He was also suddenly glad that he had not waited for Khrys to accompany him.

The dragon swooped out of the sky, claws and fangs leading. Kyle ducked one claw and sliced at it with his sword. He hit it, severing the claw, but paid for it by being hit with the other claw. He fell to the ground, dazed. His shoulder was broken and he lay there for several moments while he tried to regain his wits.

Kyle could hear the dragon screaming in pain and rage as it turned for another pass. He knew he would be helpless when it got there. Suddenly, he saw through pain dimmed eyes, a large man rise from the ground, pulling a large claymore from his back and raising it above his head in a challenge to the dragon. He could hear a raucous song coming from the man, one of camaraderie and fellowship inspired by the deeds of Kyle's ancestors. He
concentrated on the figure and suddenly realized it was his servant, Jon Brightblaid.

The dragon swooped at Jon, screaming and roaring. Jon stood there, singing his song and waiting for his opportunity. The dragon made the mistake of leading with its wounded claw. Jon smiled and lunged with his sword, sinking the blade to the hilt in the dragon's forehead. The dragon fell to the ground, dead, bowling Jon over and narrowly missing the wounded Kyle. Jon stood up and looked at his first real kill. He smiled and pulled his blade
from the dragon's skull. He turned and walked to Kyle, putting his sword away. Helping Kyle to his feet, he said, "That wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Are you all right, Sire?"

Gritting his teeth in pain, Kyle replies, "Yes, I'll be fine. You did well, my friend." Kyle waits for his medallion to heal him.

A few minutes later, Kyle looks at his medallion in surprise. It hasn't healed him. It isn't even pulsing at the normal rate. He leans heavily on Jon and says, "Twould appear I will have to deal with this wound on my own, my friend. Come, there is a town at the foot of that mountain. Mayhaps they will have a healer who can set this for me." Wincing in pain, he sheathes his sword and begins walking toward the town.

When they arrive in the town, the people eye them suspiciously. A rather large man walks up, wearing mismatched armour and carrying what was obviously a useless sword, the tip having been broken off. "Who are you?" the man asks. "What do you want here?"

"My lord and I were attacked by a dragon," Jon tells the man. "My lord is injured. Have you a healer here? We have money with which to pay."

The man eyes them suspiciously. Then, seeing something he recognizes, he kneels before Kyle and says, "Forgive me, m'Lord. I did not realize who you were or what your station was." Glancing over his shoulder, the man says to a young boy, "Fetch the healer. This Knight needs assistance." The boy runs off in the direction of the chapel. The man rises when Kyle collapses onto the ground. He helps Jon pick Kyle up and carry him to the tavern, a
short distance away. "He will be fine here, Sir." The man says to Jon.

"Thank you. May I ask a question?"

"Certainly, Sir."

"What happened here? How did all this happen? How could the Knights have allowed this to occur?"

"The Fifth Age. The Dragons have taken over the world, stepping into the void left when the gods left. How is it that you travel with a Knight and know none of this?"

"Umm... we have been away for some time. Where are all the Patrols? There should be patrols of Knights roaming the countryside." Jon says.

"The knights are... all but gone. The War did not go well for them. Their numbers have been depleted. There are probably only two thousand of their number left. Out of over thirty-thousand. They have been reduced to guerilla tactics to harass the enemy."

A few nights later, a band of fighters came through the town. They were running from a band of Draconians. When they walked into the tavern, Kyle noticed something odd about their leader: he looked almost exactly like Kyle, except for the jet black hair and the Jade Green eyes. Kyle quickly stepped into the shadows. He did not want the stranger to see him.

The men entered the tavern and quickly moved to the large table to discuss among themselves what they should do. Their leader quickly settled them down and began detailing his plans quietly.

As Jon was about to walk up and introduce himself to the leader, a man dressed in woodland clothing, obviously a scout, runs in and goes straight to hte leader. "M'Lord, a word if I may...." the man says between gasps. The two men walk to a corner, and talk for several moments.

Meanwhile, Jon speaks with some of the other men and finds out the leader is Sir Navarr Garyth... an outcast Knight of the Sword. Jon's eyes widen at the name, but he wisely holds his tongue. He glances at Kyle then talks with the men some more.

Navarr walks back to the table, ordering some wine for the scout. He looks at his men and grins widely. "I have some good news, men. The local Dragon Lord has made a crucial mistake. He has sent too many of his troops to the frontlines and has weakened his defenses. He now has only a bare minimum force guarding his stronhold, and nearly half of those are sympathetic to our cause. The time to strike is now. The
Dragon Lord will be sending his troops off in less than a week. We must be ready to strike soon after that. Within a week after."

Kyle rises and walks to the table. "You will need all the help you can get, Navarr. May I pledge my sword to your service?"

Navarr turns and looks at Kyle, eye to eye. The resemblance is so striking that the men around the table begin to murmur. "Who are you, stranger, that you would join with us?"

"My name is not important. My hoour is my life, both of which I pledge to you, Sir Knight." Unaccustomed to such movement, Kyle kneels awkwardly, pulling his sword with his left hand and offering it to the man, hilt first. Navarr looks at him in surprise.

"Who are you, that you look so like me, yet act so much like my ancestors? That has not been done in nearly a thousand years."

Smiling, Kyle stands carefully, taking care with his injured shoulder. "Call me Kyle, if you must have a name. I am an... anachronism. I believe the old ways are often the best..."

The two men stare at each other for some time, then, suddenly, Navarr begins laughing. He orders mead for all and they begin planning their attack. Kyle sits and watches Navarr, impressed with the man's grasp of tactics. He makes a few suggestions, and then they decide to leave for the night.

The next few days were filled with preparations. Kyle began working with his shoulder, trying to speed the unusually slow healling process. His shoulder, though still sore, quickly becomes strong enough to weild a sword.

About a week after their arrival, the band of fighters leaves for the Dragon Lords Citadel, their numbers increased by two. Walking through the woods, the men make good time and arrive in the area fully 2 days ahead of schedule. They set up camp and Jon and the scouts begin to search for ways to approach unseen. They make contact with one of the sympathizers and a plan is set in motion.

The next day, the company begins to secretly infiltrate the stronghold. They move to the inner areas of the castle and begin to slowly eliminate the guards. Soon after, all the guards loyal to the Dragon Lord were killed or imprisoned. The band of fighters burst into the Dragon Lords inner sanctum and a horrendous battle ensues.

During the battle, Kyle and Navarr confront the Dragon Lord. Kyle and Navarr complement eaach other perfectly, one defending while the other attacks and then switching. The Dragon Lord is quickly outmatched. He steps back from the two and begins to laugh at them.

The Dragon lord transforms into a huge blue dragon. He begins to attack the two men immediately. The men were caught offguard and hard pressed to hold their ground. As Kyle lunged for the Dragon's head, Navarr lunged for the breast, where the weakspot in the thing's armour was. The two men struck nearly simultaneously. The Dragon was able to strike Kyle across the back before dying. Kyle was sent flying across the room. He hit the wall hard,
reinjuring his shoulder. He screamed in pain, then passed out. Jon rushed to his side and began fighting off the few soldiers still resisting. The battle ends with a victory for the rebel force.

Kyle was carried back to a town where he was treated and healed. Kyle and Jon, deciding they should leave before too many questions are asked, slip out of the town late that night. They travel around the land, finding people who, though hope should be gone, strive to protect their loved ones.

The two men soon realize they can do nothing to change what has occured in Kyle's homeland. They returned to the palce where they first stepped out of the portal. As the portal reappeared, a force of Draconians charge from the hill. Kyle and Jon fight them off, but Kyle's sword is lost and his armour was torn and damaged severely. The two men jump through the Portal just as it is closing. After resting for a few hours, the two men return to the
Atreblian valley. Kyle walks to the arena and Jon travels to the Keep to see that everything is taken care of.

The end?
