Alright, the best thing to do from now on is to not get personal here, but I'll only refer to myself.
I haven't been around the arena as much as I used to, but when I am, I see new people wander in everyday. Honestly, I get slightly aggrivated when they ask if they can "play" and claim to know the rules, but they then show that they do not.
This group is definitely in the new school class, because they have no idea about even the rules of DoS. After thought, though, I want us to look at two things, though.
1) since there will always be old school and new school, I sincerely do not understand the point of arguing which defines which.
2) if someone thinks they are old school, they are entitled to their opinion, honestly. When someone says they are an old man, what defines an old man? Wrinkles? Glasses? A cane? It's all a matter of personal opinion, so can we truly not try to define old school and new school? I know we're supposed to be welcoming opinions here, but if you think about it, it's not getting us anywhere.
3) We are, as we all know, a community. It's a personal responsibility, I believe, for all members of the community to try to take part in helping others that are new. I admit, sometimes I take my opinions about people publically and post my feelings. As a general rule, though, I try to help new people.
If anyone disagrees with me... well, you know we all welcome opinions here, especially me.

Regarding "schools:"
I offer this in the spirit of friendly debate rather than "I'm right, you're wrong" scenario -- I do not think any of us are right on the money -- it is all about personal perspectives, I think. I find this discussion fascinating, excepting the clique comments.
I may throw about the term "old school" when talking about a duelist who has been around for a long time. I realize that this is, perhaps, not alway the best "jargon" to use.
I do see specific trends moving about the sport. Currently, I see duelists slash a lot -- and not just newcomers who are still learning the game that trot one out simply because they like how it looks. Is this because it's in answer to the conservative parries? If people stop parrying so much will the Slash frenzy abate? (Dashing Slashers are specifically excluded from my ponderings -- Slash away! :D ) Seguing...
Bookend parries -- this is a very popular trend these days. In response, people duck, and then yet others Slash, see above.
When I first arrived in Rhydin and joined in the dueling games, I learned quickly that Warlords Thrust on opening moves. At the time, it was a rather intimidating and confident move. To compensate, the trend shifted toward Sidestepping first round. To further compensate for the Sidestepping of the Thrusting, duelists would Low Cut - the highest percentage aggressive move on the matrix (in my opinion - it avoids the most and hits the most). This
caused strategic duelists to open with a CP. Naturally, to cleverly avoid the circle parry, duelists took the weaker cut.
About the time of the lowering of taxes ((Dec. 96 or thereabouts)), we got an amazing wave of duelists -- many of them were very sharp and quickly picked up on the proclivities to HC and so they began opening with LP - the weakest of the parries (because it only works against the weaker, riskier cut). Their canniness paid off, catching their opponents off-guard many a duel.
Some people tend toward being Thrusters, others (generally the older duelists) are Cutters. Others have trademark moves (Simini's SimStep [Fancy Sidestep], Shannon Colton's Fist Drop [Jabbing an opponent's LegSweep], etc.).
I can't say that any of these are necessarily "old" or "new" school. Certainly there's many an old face that strategizes and plays the percentages. Every single person who is "known" arrived by their skill, actions, and voice. It is not really that hard to "get in," people. All it takes is vocalizing your opinion. If a person wants to be accepted then first we have to *see* you. I have yet to see someone shunned if they offered a smile, or a laugh, or politeness.
Perhaps the next time someone complains about being "left out" they should consider if they even knocked on the door.

Les see...by some people's regard Ah'm Old School cause ah been aroun fer nearly two years...when ah arrived heres, mannah peoples were usin th Thrust as an openin moves likes ya stated, includin' meself cause o th abundance o cuttin, so ah began ta use th Slash, even as me openin' move, more as most woulds tended ta be expectin th lunge an woulds parry...in those times, th Slash was Risky ta say th least. Nhadays, ah gets slashed at so much its
makin me head spin. It's almost likes peoples wanna takes out th Dashin Slashah, eithah tha or th trend be changin yet agin...
Ah consider meself nha Old School, or New School...but an Intermediate School...those tha combine th styles o reaction wit a penchant for risky maneuvahs. Nha too long agos, we held a Team match tween wha th Community deemed Old School and New School...ah don' membah who won ovahall but ah do membah bein whooped an distracted by yet anothah lovely an skilled duellist known today as th Baroness Luthien. Annahows, this became th precursor fer a
rebirth o th orginal Team Duellin Concept, which by eithah luck o innerest is well inta its secon' season an ah'm happy ta be a part o it.
Me 2nd worst fear, it must be admitted, woulds be ta duel th Femme Fatales...cause ah'd likely lose every time. The ladies o tha gatherin, are nha onlah seductively attractive, but deadly in their skill wit a blade, one mistake yer history. No offense meant to the *newschool* but if they can continue the fine art of roleplat as well as they claim to...well then that may say something, nut from what I have seen, tis the *newschool98* that has brought the *jibberish* to the arenas. Just me 2 cents.
